Demersal zooplankton, those plankton which hide within reef sediments during the day but emerge to swim freely over the reef at night, were sampled quantitatively using emergence traps planced over the substrate at Lizard Island Lagoon, Great Barrier Reef. Densities of zooplankton emerging at night from 6 substrate types (fine, medium, and coarse sand, rubble, living coral and reef rock) and from 5 reef zones (seaward face, reef flat, lagoon, back reef, and sand flat) were determined. A large population of nocturnal plankton including cumaceans, mysids, ostracods, shrimp, isopods, amphipods, crustacean larvae, polychaetes, foraminiferans and copepods are resident members of the reef community at Lizard Island. The mean density of plankton emerging throughout the reef was 2510±388 (standard error) zooplankton/m2 of substrate. Biomass averaged 66.2±5.4 mg ash-free dry weight/m2 of substrate. Demersal zooplankton exhibited significant preferences for substrate types and reef zones. The highest mean density of zooplankton emerged from coral (11,264±1952 zooplankton/m2) while the lowest emerged from reef rock (840±106 zooplankton/m2). The density of demersal plankton was six times greater on the face than in any other zone, averaging 7900±1501 zooplankton/m2. Copepods dominated samples collected over living coral and rubble while foraminiferans, ostracods and decapod larvae were most abundant from sand. Plankton collected with nets at night correlated only qualitatively with plankton collected in emergence traps from the same location. Although abundant, demersal plankton were not numerous enough to meet the metabolic needs of all corals at Lizard Island Lagoon. Demersal plankton appear especially adapted to avoid fish predation. The predator-avoidance strategies of demersal plankton and maintenance of position on the reef are discussed. Our results indicate that much of the zooplankton over coral reefs actually lives on the reef itself and that previous studies using standard net sampling techniques have greatly underestimated plankton abundance over coral reefs.

Gnathiid isopods are one of the most abundant groups of ectoparasites on coral reef fishes. They, and other isopods, have been shown to significantly affect the health and behaviour of many reef fish. Whether isopod emergence differs among habitats on coral reefs is not known. In this study, we measured emergence rates of parasitic isopods (Gnathiidea and Flabellifera) in six habitats at two sites at Lizard Island during new moon periods in March and December 2004. Isopods were collected from the periphery and centres of micro-reefs, patch reefs, continuous reefs, and from inter-reefal habitats (sand or rubble) with 1 m2 emergence traps. Sites (Casuarina and Coconut Beach) were located on opposite sides of Lizard Island. Live gnathiids were collected with light traps in November 2005 to investigate species differences between sites. At both sites, the most abundant gnathiid species was exclusive to that site. More gnathiid larvae emerged at night, and emergence of fed gnathiids (pranizae) and flabelliferan isopods was almost exclusively nocturnal. Diurnal emergence was greater at Coconut Beach than Casuarina Beach. Although emergence counts were not consistently affected by parameters such as habitat, site, or sampling period, gnathiid size and feeding state were. Where significant differences existed, gnathiids were larger and more often fed over reef borders than centrally. We suggest first stage larvae (Z1) have the largest influence on total abundance and are patchily distributed in accordance with adults from which they have recently hatched. As later stage larvae depend on fish, more successful (fed) and older larvae are found on the edges of reefs where appropriate hosts may be more abundant, or predation is lower. Gnathiids were over-dispersed in all habitats investigated, including apparently homogeneous beds of coral rubble and sand. This indicates that their distributions may be better predicted by very fine scale differences in substrate or that aggregations are the result of gregariousness and may be difficult to predict on the basis of substrate. Emergence traps collected comparatively few parasitic flabelliferan isopods. This community differed greatly from the previously described community of scavenging isopods at Lizard Island. These differences are probably the result of differences in trapping methodology.

Determining the scale of larval dispersal and population connectivity in demersal fishes is a major challenge in marine ecology. Historically, considerations of larval dispersal have ignored the possible contributions of larval behaviour, but we show here that even young, small larvae have swimming, orientation and vertical positioning capabilities that can strongly influence dispersal outcomes. Using young (11–15 days), relatively poorly developed (8–10 mm), larvae of the pomacentrid damselfish, Amblyglyphidodon curacao (identified using mitochondrial DNA), we studied behaviour relevant to dispersal in the laboratory and sea on windward and leeward sides of Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Behaviour varied little with size over the narrow size range examined. Critical speed was 27.5 ± 1.0 cm s−1 (30.9 BL s−1), and in situ speed was 13.6 ± 0.6 cm s−1. Fastest individuals were 44.6 and 25.0 cm s−1, for critical and in situ speeds, respectively. In situ speed was about 50% of critical speed and equalled mean current speed. Unfed larvae swam 172 ± 29 h at 8–10 cm s−1 (52.0 ± 8.6 km), and lost 25% wet weight over that time. Vertical distribution differed between locations: modal depth was 2.5–5.0 and 10.0–12.5 m at leeward and windward sites, respectively. Over 80% of 71 larvae observed in situ had directional swimming trajectories. Larvae avoided NW bearings, with an overall mean SE swimming direction, regardless of the direction to nearest settlement habitat. Larvae made smaller changes between sequential bearings of swimming direction when swimming SE than in other directions, making it more likely they would continue to swim SE. When swimming NW, 62% of turns were left (more than in other directions), which would quickly result in swimming direction changing away from NW. This demonstrates the larvae knew the direction in which they were swimming and provides insight into how they achieved SE swimming direction. Although the cues used for orientation are unclear, some possibilities seemingly can be eliminated. Thus, A. curacao larvae near Lizard Island, on average swam into the average current at a speed equivalent to it, could do this for many hours, and chose different depths in different locations. These behaviours will strongly influence dispersal, and are similar to behaviour of other settlement-stage pomacentrid larvae that are older and larger.

Late larvae of the serranid coral trout Plectropomus leopardus (Lacepède), captured in light traps, were released during the day both in open water and adjacent to two reefs, and their behaviour was observed by divers at Lizard Island, northern Great Barrier Reef. Coral trout larvae (n = 110) were present in light-trap catches from 18 November to 3 December 1997, including new moon (30 November). The swimming speed of larvae in open water or when swimming away from reefs was significantly greater (mean 17.9 cm s−1) than the speed of larvae swimming towards or over reefs (mean 7.2 cm s−1). Near reefs, larvae swam at average depths of 2.7 to 4.2 m, avoiding 0 to 2 m. In open water, swimming depth varied with location: larvae >1 km east of Lizard Island swam steeply downward to >20 m in 2 to 4 min; larvae >1 km west oscillated between 2.6 and 13 m; larvae 100 to 200 m east of Lizard Island oscillated between 0.8 and 15 m. Nearly all larvae swam directionally in open water and near reefs. In open water, the average swimming direction of all larvae was towards the island, and 80% (4 of 5) swam directionally (p < 0.05, Rayleigh's test). Larvae swam directionally over the reef while looking for settlement sites. The frequency of behaviours by larvae differed between two reefs of different exposure and morphology. Depending on site, 26 to 32% of larvae released adjacent to reefs swam to open water: of these, some initially swam towards or over the reef before swimming offshore. In some cases, offshore-swimming seemed to be due to the presence of predators, but usually no obvious cause was observed. Depending on the reef, 49 to 64% of the larvae settled. Non-predatory reef residents aggressively approached 19% of settlers. Between 5 and 17% of the larvae were eaten while approaching the reef or attempting to settle, primarily by lizardfishes but also by wrasses, groupers and snappers. A higher percentage of larvae settled in the second week of our study than in the first. Average time to settlement was short (138 s ± 33 SE), but some larvae took up to 15 min to settle. Average settlement depth was 7.5 to 9.9 m, and differed between locations. No settlement took place on reef flats or at depths <4.2 m. Larvae did not appear to be selective about settlement substrate, but settled most frequently on live and dead hard coral. Late-stage larvae of coral trout are capable swimmers with considerable control over speed, depth and direction. Habitat selection, avoidance of predators and settlement seem to rely on vision. The reef fishes that settled on an array of experimental corals at Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia, were counted during a pulse of recruitment in December 1986. NeitherPomacentrus sp. norP. amboinensis showed any evidence that harassment by residentDascyllus aruanus caused a decrease in persistence during the first day after settlement. LarvalPomacentrus sp. settled selectively on corals without residentD. aruanus. The results forP. amboinensis were ambiguous. Settlers of both species positioned themselves closer to the sand on corals with residentD. aruanus than on unoccupied corals. This could reduce access to planktonic food and increase the risk of predation. Adult aggression may be less important and active selection of settlement sites by larvae may be more important to the distribution of recruits than is suggested by the literature. The presence or absence of particular species should be included among the cues that larval reef fishes use to choose settlement sites.

Eggs of Thrissocles species are found in surface plankton in the Ernakulam Channel (Cochin Harbour)during February to May 1967. The eggs hatch within 24 h. Empty egg shells have characteristic apertures, through which the embryos have emerged; yolk is resorbed 36 h after hatching.Larvae (36 to 72 h groups) assemble at the lighted region of the aquaria during day-time and scatter to different levels at night. Larvae older than 72 h show no inclination to assemble as before. All larvae died between 96 and 110 h after hatching. Many batches of eggs were reared in the same medium, and all of them behaved as described. The results indicate that the right type of food was available in the aquaria for larvae up to a period of 72 h. The volume of water also appears to have a bearing upon the survival rate and longevity of the larvae since, in small aquaria, more larvae died at an early stage.

In contrast to the seasonal gamete and planula production of Acropora (Isopora) palifera on Heron Island reef (Lat. 23° S), populations on Lizard Island reef (Lat. 14° S), sampled in 1979, 1981 and 1983, and Salamaua and Busama reefs (Lat. 7° S), sampled from 1980 to 1983, planulated year-round. Intensive sampling of colonies at Salamaua and Busama showed that gametes ripened at two-month intervals and that up to six cycles of gametes and larvae could be produced by an individual colony. Gametes of only a portion of the population — usually close to 50% — ripened each month. The Salamaua population, on average, produced fewer and smaller planulae than the Heron Island population during each two-monthly reproductive cycle. Hypotheses correlating the annual periodicity of breeding in marine animals with latitudinal variation of temperature were tested. In general, the time of breeding in A. palifera at Heron Island reef is much more restricted than theories based on latitudinal variations of water temperature would predict. It is hypothesized that, in the near subtropical environment of Heron Island reef, this species has evolved a life-history strategy that limits the amount of energy allocated to reproduction and allocates more energy to growth.

One of the major problems in the quantitative study of the distribution of larvae of the western rock lobster Panulirus longipes cygnus George, is the high variability in planktonnet catches taken at night, even when replicate hauls are made at a single station. Some of the possible causes of this variability are considered. The density of early and late-stage phyllosoma larvae caught at the surface at night showed no direct relationship to either temperature or salinity. Early-stage phyllosoma larvae were equally well represented at the surface under all light conditions encountered at night. In contrast, the density of late-stage phyllosoma larvae at the surface was, on an average, four times greater on dark nights than on bright moonlight nights. The mean density for all phyllosoma stages decreased rapidly with depth, i.e., from 0.70/1000 m3 at the surface to 0.04/1000 m3 at 25 to 35 m, indicating that the vertical movements at night are not very extensive. The density of early-stage phyllosoma larvae in the surface at night showed no relationship to micronekton biomass (measured as wet weight). Density of late-stage phyllosoma larvae at the surface at night increased slightly, but significantly, with increase of micronekton biomass, possibly indicating similar behavioural responses to light or some other factor(s). The distribution of cast exuviae of final-stage phyllosoma larvae indicated that metamorphosis to the puerulus phase can occur more than 100 miles (161 km) from shore. Moreover, 80% of the puerulus larvae caught were within 80 miles (129 km) of the shore. Mean densities of puerulus larvae taken at and below the surface at night were 0.04/1000 m3 and 0.10/1000 m3, respectively, although total numbers were low. This evidence indicates that, after metamorphosis, the puerulus larvae return to the coastal environment at some subsurface depth.

To obtain a direct measurement of the importance of Prochloron sp. to the ascidian Didemnum molle, ascidian colonies from Lizard Island Lagoon, Great Barrier Reef, were grown for 9 d at 0, 10, 40 and 100% sunlight in situ using unidirectional flow chambers. Growth (wet weight) was enhanced up to 40% of full sunlight, at which point growth appears to have been light-saturated. Colonies in 10 and 40% sunlight responded by (1) climbing up the sides of the growth chambers, and (2) flattening out to a more encrusting morphology; also (3) the chlorophyll content of three colonies in zero sunlight decreased by >80%, yet the ascidians remained healthy and did not lose weight. These data show that although the symbiosis may not be obligatory for D. molle, the ascidian's growth is enhanced by Prochloron sp., and the morphology of the ascidian colony is affected by its photobiology.Contribution No. 344 of the Australian Institute of Marine ScienceCommunicated by G.

The spatial and temporal distributions of two island-associated copepod species, Undinula vulgaris Dana and Labidocera madurae Scott, were compared to the distributions of two open ocean species, Cosmocalanus darwinii Lubbock and Scolecithrix danae Lubbock, along 28-km windward and leeward transects off the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Samples were taken in September and December 1985 and April and June 1986. A warm, low salinity pool on the leeward side was a prominent feature during all transects except December. The abundances of the two oceanic species did not change significantly between leeward and windward stations, with distance from shore, or between September 1985 and April 1986 samples. As expected, very high abundances of U. vulgaris occurred at some nearshore stations, up to 3 g dry wt m−2 for adults alone. Calculations of respiratory loss at these densities (0.7 g C m−2 d−1) suggest a high local productivity would be required to meet these demands. L. madurae, a surface-dwelling species normally restricted to within 1 km of shore, was an effective indicator species of nearshore water movement. It was more common in offshore samples on the leeward transects, rarely being found offshore on the windward side, consistent with prevailing currents and the presence of the leeward warm, low salinity pool. The occurrence of a strong mixing event in April 1986 resulted in L. madurae being distributed throughout the upper 100 m of the water column. The presence of oceanic species close to shore on the windward side also coincided with this wind-driven event. The primary environmental influence on vertical distributions was daytime cloud cover, with U. vulgaris tending to be found shallower on cloudy days. Of the two oceanic species, S. danae exhibited the most pronounced vertical migration, however, vertical distributions were not significantly correlated with environmental factors for either species. The abundant nearshore U. vulgaris population cannot be explained by differences in vertical distribution between it and the two oceanic species that might allow a physical mechanism to concentrate U. vulgaris. A high population growth rate is likely necessary to explain U. vulgaris' dominance.

Periods of emergence of nine species (88 individuals) of crinoids (Comanthus parvicirrus, Clarkcomanthus albinotus, Comaster multifidus, Oxycomanthus comanthipinna, Oligometra serripinna, Comanthus gisleni, Comanthus wahlbergi, Comatula purpurea, and Oxycomanthus exilis) were monitored at Lizard Island, Queensland, over seven days in March 1983. One species (O. serripinna) was fully exposed and the others partially exposed. Two patterns of emergence were species-specific: emergent both day and night, and emergent only at night. Intraspecific exposure patterns were generally synchronous in six species and asynchronous in three species. The number of species visible was relatively constant during all dives, while at least twice as many individuals were visible at night compared to day. Degree of emergence was determined as the number and length of arms extended into the water column. Except for species fully exposed, degree of crinoid emergence was generally minimal at midday and maximal at twilight and night. Increases in both number of crinoids visible, and the amount of an individual's emergence, corresponded to decreasing light intensities, even during daytime. It is suggested that the patterns of exposure are a response to increased prey abundance at twilight and night, and also a means of avoiding diurnal predators. Gonads on the longest arms of some partially exposed crinoids were not extended into the water, thus protecting the gonads from predators.

As part of a “European Sardine/Anchovy Recruitment Program” (SARP), sardine larvae (Sardina pilchardus) were sampled off the Atlantic coast of Spain through the spawning season from March to June. The larvae were analysed for carbon and nitrogen content as a measure of nutritional condition and survival potential. There was no significant diel variation in larval carbon content, but there was a small significant diel variation in nitrogen; the absence of a strong diel signal in elemental composition was ascribed to the overnight retention of the gut contents. There was an increase in carbon content with increase in body length which reached an asymptote at ∼40% carbon content at a larval length of 20 mm. It is argued that larvae with a carbon content of <25% of body weight were nutritionally stressed, with the smaller larvae (<10 mm in length) appearing to be more vulnerable to food limitation. Although larvae with the lowest age-specific carbon content (poorest condition) occurred on the cruise with the lowest food availability, there was no consistent relationship between carbon content and food availability. While the successive monthly estimates of carbon content revealed differences in potential recruitment between months, these were not related to the birth-date distribution of the surviving juveniles. Sharpnose puffers, Canthigaster valentini (Pisces: Tetraodontidae) at Lizard Island, Australia, live in made-dominated haremic social and mating systems. The hypothesis was that mature females are restricted in their movements and can be monopolized by some males. Field experiments at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, between January and March 1983 showed that mature females were still territorial in the absence of males and movements of females were not controlled by males. Males abandoned their territories when their females were removed. The territorial behavior of those males with access to females (territorial males) restricted the access of other males (bachelor males) to them. Bachelor males took over harems and became territorial males when established territorial males were removed. The results of the experiments thus supported the hypothesis.

Modelling the fate of marine turtle hatchlings
The SLIM oceanographic model was used to examine the fate of hatchling flatback turtles (Natator depressus) in the first two weeks of their dispersal starting at Wild Duck Island, a major turtle-nesting site in the central Great Barrier Reef region of Australia. We ran simulations to investigate the effects of spring versus neap tides, hatchling's swimming behaviour during their first three days at sea, and the location of nesting beaches. The model predicted that up to 50% of the turtle hatchlings entering the sea from the windward, southern beach remained after 14 days in shallow, nearshore waters, irrespective of tides and swimming. These waters are turbid and may be inhospitable to hatchlings. In contrast >80% of hatchlings dispersing from the leeward, northern beach were dispersed to deeper water (10-40 m) in a quasi-stationary dispersion core centred around 10 km north of the nesting beach after 14 days and the offshore spread of the turtle plume was enhanced by the hatchling's seaward swimming during the first three days. This was due to the presence of a coastal boundary layer and a stagnation zone around the northern side of island, but not the southern side. The model confirmed that dispersal from eastern Queensland flatback turtle rookeries is restricted to the lagoons and coastal waters, and that water circulation and hatchling's swimming control dispersion. The model explains why more turtles nest on the northern than the southern side. This study highlights the usefulness of oceanographic models to increase knowledge about a cryptic life stage of marine turtles.

Ambrym in Vanuatu is a persistently degassing island volcano whose inhabitants harvest rainwater for their potable water needs. The findings from this study indicate that dental fluorosis is prevalent in the population due to fluoride contamination of rainwater by the volcanic plume. A dental survey was undertaken of 835 children aged 6–18 years using the Dean’s Index of Fluorosis. Prevalence of dental fluorosis was found to be 96% in the target area of West Ambrym, 71% in North Ambrym, and 61% in Southeast Ambrym. This spatial distribution appears to reflect the prevailing winds and rainfall patterns on the island. Severe cases were predominantly in West Ambrym, the most arid part of the island, and the most commonly affected by the volcanic plume. Over 50 km downwind, on a portion of Malakula Island, the dental fluorosis prevalence was 85%, with 36% prevalence on Tongoa Island, an area rarely affected by volcanic emissions. Drinking water samples from West Ambrym contained fluoride levels from 0.7 to 9.5 ppm F (average 4.2 ppm F, n = 158) with 99% exceeding the recommended concentration of 1.0 ppm F. The pathway of fluoride-enriched rainwater impacting upon human health as identified in this study has not previously been recognised in the aetiology of fluorosis. This is an important consideration for populations in the vicinity of degassing volcanoes, particularly where rainwater comprises the primary potable water supply for humans or animals.

The morphology of the primary tube feet in 15 species of comatulid (unstalked) crinoids from coral reefs in the Palau Islands and Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, was investigated using close-up underwater photographs of the tube feet taken in the natural habitat. Measurements of length of the tube feet and their spacing along the pinnule were taken from these photographs. Tube feet of species of the family Comasteridae have a mean length of 0.75 mm and a mean spacing of 6 tube feet mm-1. Tube feet of non-comasterid species occurring in the same environments have a mean length of 0.55 mm and a mean spacing of about 8 tube feet mm-1. The relationship between spacing and length of the tube feet is highty significant for both the Palau and Lizard Island samples (P<0.01). Species having longer and more widely spaced tube feet live partly concealed within the infrastructure of the reef and hold the arms and pinnules in a multidirectional posture. Species having shorter and more closely spaced tube feet perch on top of reef pinnacles or alcyonarians and form planar filtration fans normal to unidirectional currents or wave oscillations. Longer and more widely spaced tube feet in species dwelling within the reef infrastructure provide more efficient filtration in the slow, meandering flow prevailing there. Closer spacing of the tube feet in species exposed to near-mainstream flow provides a more efficient filtration mechanism at higher flow velocities. Reduced length of the tube feet in these species may be a consequence of closer spacing of the pinnules. Differentiation of these co-occurring species in spacing and length of the tube feet implies differentiation in food particles captured. This may in some cases constitute resource partitioning. Most species which overlap in living habits are significantly different in spacing and length of the tube feet.

Spatiotemporal recruitment patterns of scleractinian corals were investigated around Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan, in relation to adult coral cover in 2005 and 2006. Although almost all corals were broadcasting spawners, the relationship between recruitment and adult coral cover differed among coral families (Acroporidae, Poritidae, and Pocilloporidae), likely due to differences in embryonic development time. For spawning pocilloporid corals, whose larvae develop relatively more rapidly, recruitment was higher at sites where adult coral cover was higher. In contrast, recruitment was not related to adult coral cover in acroporid and poritid corals, whose embryonic development times were relatively slow. Moreover, recruitment of acroporid corals varied between years, and recruitment was greater at leeward compared to windward reefs for a few days after spawning. These results suggest that embryonic development time and wind-driven surface currents affect larval dispersal and subsequent recruitment patterns at a local scale. Based on embryonic development time, some spawning corals are more likely to have higher rates of self-seeding than others. Our results predict that among spawning corals, local populations of acroporid and poritid corals, whose larvae potentially disperse over long distances and recruit in neighboring reefs, are more resilient to local disturbances than those of pocilloporid corals, whose recruitment relies upon local stock.
