Productivities of two cohorts of Chordaria flagelliformis (O. F. Müll.) C. Ag. were estimated from measured changes in biomass and survivorship over time. Maximum productivity during the summer growing season was 2.6 g C m-2 d-1. Although this figure is relatively high, the short growing season results in an annual production of only 89 g C m-2. The significance of primary production by C. flagelliformis lies in its seasonal timing. During the summer growth period, 50% of production was recycled directly by detrital material. During the same time period, productivity and biomass losses of other seaweeds are at their lowest.  相似文献

Phytoplankton production and associated variables were measured in Flax Pond, a 52 ha salt marsh on the north shore of Long Island, New York, from July 1972 to October 1973. Measurements made up to five times per day, once per week, yielded a mean annual net primary production, determined by the 14C technique, of 20.5 mg C/m3/h; daily means were as high as 60.0 mg C/m3/h. However, when productivity was calculated for the entire marsh ecosystem, the shallow water in the salt marsh produced only 11.7 g C/m2 of marsh/year. There was a net flux of phytoplankton from the coastal waters into the marsh; during the summer up to 0.2 g chlorophy 11/m2 of marsh was carried in with the tides daily and remained in the marsh. Analysis of the productivity data, as well as variables associated with productivity (pH, standing crop, nutrients, extinction coefficient), indicated that the aquatic portion of the marsh behaved more as a net consumer rather than a net producer of phytoplankton.Research carried out at Brookhaven National Laboratory, supported by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the National Science Foundation under Grant No. AG-375.  相似文献

Microheterotrophic dissolved free amino acid (DFAA) utilization, and microbial community and bacterial community carbon production and growth were studied using 3H-labeled organics as tracers in marine surface-film and subsurface (10 cm) waters off Baja California in November 1983. DFAA utilization was generally more rapid during the day (0.14 to 0.38 nM h-1) than at night (0.04 to 0.14 nM h-1) in surface-film and subsurface waters, but the percent of utilized amino acid which was respired was always greater during the night (22 to 57%) compared to the day (14 to 18%). Utilization of DFAA-carbon was estimated to range from 0.3 to 5.3 g C l-1 d-1 for all stations studied. In six of the 8 samples examined, the percentage of microbial carbon accounted for by the bacterial component of the population (1.4 to 5.9%) was strikingly similar to the percentage of microbial carbon production accounted for by bacterial carbon production (1.9 to 5.1%). In all of these six samples, total microbial specific-growth rates and bacterial specific-growth rates were approximately equivalent (0.9 to 2.2 d-1 for the microbial community; 0.7 to 1.9 d-1 for bacteria). The two exceptions were samples apparently influenced by transient flagellate populations migrating into the surface or subsurface waters at night. These observations support the conclusion that surface films contain unique and highly active microbial populations.  相似文献

Water column production measurements were made during a bloom of the marine dinoflagellate Gyrodinium cf. aureolum in the Western English Channel in July 1987. The bloom was sampled over a period of 5 d, and primary production was measured using the oxygen light and dark bottle method and the 14C technique. The photosynthetic quotient (PQ) varied between 1.2 and 3.7. During the period sampled, the proportion of phaeopigments significantly increased (from <5 to >50%) and mixed layer dissolved oxygen saturation decreased from 133 to 114%. A model was used to determine gross water column productivity in the surface mixed layer on two days, and net production values were shown to be close to zero or slightly negative. Comparisons of production values are made with other published G. cf. aureolum bloom data.  相似文献

From measured diel photosynthesis and respiration rates, using oxygen electrodes, estimates of carbon flux between symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) and host animal are presented for the marine scyphomedusan Mastigias sp. from a marine lake in Palau, Western Caroline Islands, during February and March 1982. The carbon budgets calculated for these lake medusae indicate that carbon fixed photosynthetically by zooxanthellae and made available to the host may satisfy up to 100% of the host's daily metabolic carbon demand (CZAR). The stable carbon isotope (13C) signature of the mesogleal carbon of lake Mastigias sp. was close to that of the zooxanthellae, supporting the interpretation that while these medusae may feed holozoically, some of their carbon comes from their symbionts. The diel photosynthesis, respiration, and preliminary estimates of carbon budgets of three individuals of another ecotype of Mastigias sp. collected from nearby oceanic lagoons are also given. Photosynthesis of lagoon medusae was generally greater than that for lake medusae of similar size, and lagoon medusae were phototrophic with respect to carbon, with commensurately greater CZAR values. Carbon translocated from the symbiotic algae also may contribute to the growth requirements of both lake and lagoon medusae. From carbon flux data, the lake jellyfish were estimated to contribute about 16% to the total primary productivity of their marine lake habitat.  相似文献

The seasonal productivity cycle and factors controlling annual variation in the timing and magnitude of the winter–spring bloom were examined for several locations (range: 42°20.35′–42°26.63′N; 70°44.19′–70°56.52′W) in Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, USA, from 1995 to 1999, and compared with earlier published data (1992–1994). Primary productivity (mg C m−2 day−1) in Massachusetts Bay from 1995 to 1999 was generally characterized by a well-developed winter–spring bloom of several weeks duration, high but variable production during the summer, and a prominent fall bloom. The bulk of production (mg C m−3 day−1) typically occurred in the upper 15 m of the water column. At a nearby Boston Harbor station a gradual pattern of increasing areal production from winter through summer was more typical, with the bulk of production restricted to the upper 5 m. Annual productivity in Massachusetts Bay and Boston Harbor ranged from a low of 160 g C m−2 year−1 to a high of 787 g C m−2 year−1 from 1992 to 1999. Mean annual productivity was higher (mean=525 g C m−2 year−1) and more variable near the harbor entrance than in western Massachusetts Bay. At the harbor station productivity varied more than 3.5-fold (CV=40%) over an 8 year sampling period. Average annual productivity (305–419 g C m−2 year−1) and variability around the means (CV=25–27%) were lower at both the outer nearfield and central nearfield regions of Massachusetts Bay. Annual productivity in 1998 was unusually low at all three sites (<220 g C m−2 year−1) due to the absence of a winter–spring phytoplankton bloom. Potential factors influencing the occurrence of a spring bloom were investigated. Incident irradiance during the winter–spring period was not significantly different (P > 0.05) among years (1995–1999). The mean photic depth during the bloom period was significantly deeper (P < 0.05) in 1998, signifying greater light availability with depth. Nutrients were also in abundance during the winter–spring of 1998 with stratified conditions not observed until May. In general, the magnitude of the winter–spring bloom in Massachusetts Bay from 1995 to 1999 was significantly correlated with winter water temperature (r 2=0.78) and zooplankton abundance (r 2=0.74) over the bloom period (typically February–April). The absence of the 1998 bloom was associated with higher than average water temperature and elevated levels of zooplankton abundance just prior to, and during, the peak winter–spring bloom period. Here we evaluate the effects of two quantitatively very important components of the water soluble fractions of fuel oils (naphthalene and 1,2-dimethylnaphthalene, hereafter NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively) on the survival, feeding and egg production rates, and viability of eggs of the coastal copepod Paracartia (Acartia) grani. Acute toxicity responses resulted in lethal concentrations (LC50) of 2,535 and 161 μg l−1 for NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively, with no evidence of narcotic effects. Hydrocarbon-specific differences in the toxicity response indicate that sublethal effects (EC50) on feeding by C2-NAPH were likely driven by induced mortality, whereas NAPH has direct negative effects on feeding. Sublethal effects on egg production rates followed a similar detrimental pattern to the one exhibited by feeding rates, suggesting that the lower egg production rates were mediated by the decrease in feeding rates. At the exposure time tested (24 h), the 50% reduction effective concentrations (EC50) determined for sublethal effects were relatively high in comparison with hydrocarbons’ concentrations found under natural circumstances. Long exposure (4 days) of P. grani adults to the tested hydrocarbons at concentrations well below the recorded EC50, however, had no significant effects on feeding, egg production and hatching rates. The viability of the eggs was either not affected or only slightly influenced when healthy eggs were incubated under very high concentrations (up to 6,400 and 700 μg l−1 NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively). The significance of the effects of oil spills on marine zooplankton communities is discussed in light of the results presented in this study.  相似文献

The sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima hosts two phylogenetically different symbiotic microalgae, a dinoflagellate Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae, ZX) and a chlorophyte (zoochlorellae, ZC). The photosynthetic productivity (P), respiration (R), and contribution of algal carbon translocated to the host (CZAR) in response to a year’s seasonal ambient changes of natural light and temperature are documented for both ZX- and ZC-bearing anemones. Light and temperature both affect photosynthesis, respiration, and CZAR, as well as various algal parameters; while there are evident seasonal differences, for the most part the relative effects on P, R, and CZAR by the two environmental variables cannot be determined. Net photosynthesis (Pn) of both ZX and ZC was significantly higher during spring and summer. During these seasons, the Pn of ZX was always greater than that of ZC. Regardless of algal symbiont, anemone respiration (R) was significantly higher during the spring and summer. The annual net carbon fixation rate of anemones with ZX and ZC was 325 and 276 mg C anemone−1 year−1, respectively, which translates to annual net community productivity rates of 92 and 60 g C m−1 year−1 for anemones with ZX or ZC, respectively. CZAR did not show a clear relationship with season; however the CZAR for ZX was always significantly greater than for ZC. Lower ZX growth rates, coupled with higher photosynthetic rates and higher CZAR estimates, compared to ZC, suggest that if A. elegantissima is simply carbon limited, ZX-bearing anemones should be the dominant symbiont in the field. However ZC-bearing anemones persist in low light and reduced temperature microhabitats, therefore more than the translocation of carbon from ZC must be involved. Given that global climate change will increase water temperatures, the potential for latitudinal range shifts of both ZC and ZX (S. californium and muscatinei) might be used as biological indicators of thermal shifts in the littoral zone of the Pacific Northwest.  相似文献

The physiology of many organisms in many places varies with seasonality of environment characteristics. Polar marine environments are amongst the least and most seasonal. For example, sea temperature varies by <3°C while light climate and primary productivity vary more than elsewhere. Polar nearshore invertebrates generally live life at a slow pace with recorded metabolic rates of 22–454 g O2/g ash-free dry-mass/h. We measured oxygen uptake by three Antarctic cheilostomatid bryozoan species during summer and winter months. Our data suggest that, in many ways, bryozoans differ from other animals. They have enormous metabolic flexibility; more within the order Cheilostomatida than in all other polar marine animals measured to date. One species alone, Kymella polaris, had both the lowest (16.8) and highest (574.9 g O2/g ash-free dry-mass/h levels recorded. Furthermore, Camptoplites bicornis showed no significant change in oxygen consumption with season whereas the final species, Isoseculiflustra tenuis, showed the highest winter to summer metabolic rise (ratio =3.45) reported for a polar species. They may not have a resting state analogous to other animals, but exhibit either full activity or dormancy in which most organic tissues are reabsorbed. The concept of resting metabolism in this taxon may be inappropriate.Communicated by J.P. Thorpe, Port Erin  相似文献

The seasonal growth rates and nitrogen and carbon fluxes were estimated for two subtidalMacrocystis integrifolia Bory kelp forests in British Columbia, Canada from changes in population structure through time. Mean relative growth rates of the forests varied from a high of 4.3% d-1 to a low of-3.6% d-1. Mean net assimilatioon rates of carbon (a photosynthesis analog) varied from a high of 0.66 g C m-2 of foliage d-1 to a low of-0.87 g C m-2 d-1. The leaf area index ranged from 0.3 to 11.9. Annual carbon input on a foliage area basis was calculated at 250 g C m-2 yr-1. Annual carbon input to the forest was estimated at 1 300 g C m-2 of ocean bottom yr-1. The yearly nitrate nitrogen input to the forest was estimated at 60 g N m-2 of ocean bottom yr-1. The net ecosystem production varied from-520 to +31 g C m-2 of ocean bottom yr-1. The intra-forest, inter-forest and seasonal variabilities of these productivity parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Production of extracellular dissolved organic substances by cultures of the marine coccolithophorid Hymenomonas carterae SMBA 254 was investigated by the 14C-tracer technique. In 4 h incubations, extracellular 14C production represented 20 to 64% of 14C incorporation into cell material for cultures nearing, or during stationary growth; for rapidly growing cultures with relatively low cell densities the 14C-production was only 4 to 10% of incorporation. Intra-and extra-cellular material was fractionated by ion-exchange membrane electrodialysis. Ionic compounds accounted for 40 to 60% of extracellular material; in contrast only 16 to 27% of intracelular metabolites were in this category. Of a range of methods which were investigated, separation of compounds by gel-filtration in conjunction with two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography proved most effective. Up to 80% of extracellular material was of less than 1 800 mol. wt and included carbohydrates and amino acids, with glutamic acid predominating. The intracellular material was more heterogeneous, with a substantially greater proportion of high molecular weight material. The quite distinct compositions show clearly that extracellular production observed in these experiments arose through excretion and was not attributable to cell lysis.  相似文献

The production, release, and subsequent consumption of coral mucus on reefs has been portrayed as a potential pathway for the transfer of coral and zooxanthellae production to other reef organisms. However, reported mucus production rates and analyses of nutritional value vary widely. Poritid corals provide a test system to measure mucus production because they produce mucous sheets which can be collected quantitatively. Fluid mucus and mucous sheets were collected fromPorites astreoides, P. furcata, P. divaricata during 1986 and 1987 on reefs in the San Blas Islands, Panama, La Parguera, Puerto Rico and the Florida Keys, USA. Mucus samples were collected from Indo-pacific poritids (P. australiensis, P. lutea, P. lobata, andP. murrayensis) on the Great Barrier Reef during 1985. Biochemical analyses of the fluid mucous secretions, and the derivative mucous sheet, indicate that the mucus is primarily a carbohydrateprotein complex.Porites fluid mucus had a mean caloric content of 4.7 cal mg–1 ash-free dry weight (AFDW), while mucous sheets contained 3.5 cal mg–1 AFDW. Sixty-eight percent of the mucous sheet was ash, while fluid mucus was 22% ash. The high ash and low organic contents suggest that mucous sheets have a low nutritional value. C:N ratios varied (range 6.9 to 13.7 for fluid mucus, and 4.8 to 5.9 for mucous sheets), but were similar to typical C:N ratios for marine organisms. Bacterial numbers and chlorophyll a concentrations were higher on mucous sheets than in the surrounding water. Although bacteria aggregate on mucous sheets, bacteria accounted for less than 0.1% of the carbon and nitrogen content of the mucous sheet. Lower C:N ratios in aged mucus, i.e. mucous sheets versus fluid mucus, were attributed to a loss of carbon rather than an increase in nitrogen. Mucous sheet production accounts for a small proportion (< 2% gross photosynthesis) of published values for coral production. In the San Blas Islands, Panama,P. astreoides produced mucous sheets at a rate of 1.5 g C m–2 y–1 and 0.3 g N m–2 y–1.P. astreoides andP. furcata produced mucous sheets with a lunar periodicity and may provide approximately monthly pulses of carbon and nitrogen to the reef food-web. However, the low annual production rates suggest that mucous sheets make a small contribution to overall energy flow on coral reefs.  相似文献

The population dynamics, ammonia and inorganic phosphate excretion, and nutrient regeneration of the common jellyfish Aurelia aurita was investigated from 1982 to 1984 in the Kiel Bight, western Baltic Sea. During summer 1982, medusae abundance ranged between 14 and 23 individuals 100 m-3, biomass was estimated at about 5 g C 100 m-3 and the mean final diameter of individuals was 22 cm. Abundance, based on numbers, in 1983 and 1984 was an order of magnitude lower; biomass was less than 2 g C 100 m-3 and jellyfish grew to 30 cm. During the summers of 1983 and 1984, A. aurita biomass constituted roughly 40% of that of the total zooplankton>200 m. In 1982, for which zooplankton data were lacking, it was assumed that medusae biomass was greater than that of all other zooplankton groups. Total ammonia excretion ranged between 6.5 and 36 mol h-1 individual-1, whereas inorganic phosphate release was 1.4 to 5.7 mol h-1 individual-1. Allometric equations were calculated and exponents of 0.93 for NH4–N release and 0.87 for PO4–P excretion were determined. Nitrogen and phosphorus turnover rates were 5.4 and 14.6% d-1, respectively. In 1982, the medusae population released 1 100 mol NH4–N m-2 d-1, about 11% of the nitrogen requirements of the phytoplankton. The inorganic phosphate excretion (150 mol m-2 d-1) sustained 23% of the nutrient demands of the primary producers. In the other two years the nutrient cycling of the medusae was much less important, and satisfied only 3 to 6% of the nutrient demands. It is suggested that in some years A. aurita is the second most important source of regenerated nutrients in Kiel Bight, next to sediment.  相似文献

Measurements of primary production and photosynthetic efficiency were carried out in the brackish lake “Etang de Berre” near Marseilles (France), which is diluted by the Durance River, and in the area of Carry-le-Rouet (Mediterranean Sea) about 25 km off the Rhône River outlet. Primary production (14C) estimations were made in Etang de Berre from December 1977 to November 1978. The carbon uptake rates ranged between 38 and 1 091 mg C m-3 d-1, with an average surface value of 256 mg; water-column carbon-uptake rates ranged between 240 and 2 310 mg C m-2 d-1, with an average of 810, representing 290 g C m-2 per year and 45 000 tons per year of photosynthetized carbon for the whole lake. Gross photosynthetic production measured by the method of Ryther was studied over a 2 yr period. The values obtained from marine water (Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 23 to 2 337 mg C m-2 d-1, with a weighted average of 319, representing about 110 g C m-2 per year. The values in brackish water (Etang de Berre) ranged from 14 to 1 778 mg C m-2 d-1, with a weighted average of 682, representing 250 g C m-2 per year and 38 400 tons per year of photosynthesized carbon for the whole lake. The values derived from both methods of primary production measurements are approximately similar. Net production (computed from biomass estimations by Utermöhl's method) was compared with gross photosynthetic production. The net production in marine water did not display significant variations: most values were usually near zero. On the other hand, net production in brackish water exhibited a number of clear variations compared with concentrations of gross photosynthetic production during the whole 2 yr period. This large difference between estimations of gross and net production may be due to grazing, which is high in Etang de Berre, but slower and more constant in seawater. The ratios of primary production: chlorophyll a and gross photosynthetic production: biomass were also studied. In Etang de Berre, the former ratio ranges between 0.57 and 3.75, with an average of 1.44; this is similar to previously reported values. The ratio gross production: biomass in Etang de Berre varies between 0.3 and 4.2, with an average of 1.27, also confirming previous data. The very high values calculated for marine waters in the present study may result from an under-estimation of biomass.  相似文献

Seasonal patterns of growth, reproduction, and productivity of Codium fragile spp. tomentosoides (van Goor) Silva were monitored at 3 locations in Rhode Island. Maximal growth occurred during the summer and was more significantly correlated with temperature than any other factor measured in this study. Multiple correlation models suggested an interaction between temperature, irradiance, and available nitrogen. Maximal reproduction occurred in late summer and early fall. The maximal productivity, based on harvested quadrats, was 2. 10 g dry weight m-2 day-1. A large amount (up to 87.3%) of the annual production entered the detrital food chain during the winter by fragmentation of the thallus. Culture studies examined the effects of temperature (6° to 30°C), irradiance (7 to 140 E m-2 sec-1), daylength (8 h light: 16 h dark to 24 h light: O h dark) and salinity (6 to 48) on growth. Differentiated thalli grew over a broad range of experimental conditions, with maximal growth at 24°C, 24 to 30 S, a minimal irradiance of 28 E m-2 sec-1, and 16 h daylength. The effect of increasing daylength was due to increased total daily irradiance rather than to a true photoperiodic effect. Undifferentiated sporelings survived and grew in a narrower range of environmental conditions than thalli. c. fragile spp. tomentosoides grew equally well with nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and urea as a nitrogen source. The addition of NaHCO3 stimulated growth at levels of 2.4 to 4.8 mM, suggesting an inorganic carbon limitation in static cultures. This study supports the hypothesis that the in situ seasonal growth pattern of c. fragile spp. tomentosoides is primarily due to the interaction of temperature and irradiance.  相似文献

Grazing rates of larger (Calanus finmarchicus) and smaller (Acartia clausii Pseudocalanus elongatus etc.) copepods on naturally occurring phytoplankton populations were measured during a declining spring phytoplankton bloom. During the initial period, dominated by Chaetoceros spp. diatoms, constant ingestion rates were observed in Calanus finmarchicus at suspended particulate concentrations above 300 g carbon l-1. Average daily intake during this time amounted to 35 to 40% of body carbon and reached a maximum of 50%. The feeding response of the smaller copepods was not so well defined, although a maximum daily intake of 56% body carbon was recorded. In both groups, feeding thresholds were at particulate concentrations around 50 g C l-1. The feeding response of C. finmarchicus was correlated with both a change in their own population and in the food cell type. Linear regressions describing the concentration-dependent feeding response were: ingestion rate (IR)=1.16 total particulate volume (TPV)-36.15 during the initial part of the period compared with IR=0.41 TPV-12.18 for the latter period. C. finmarchicus filtered out slightly larger (x 1.2 diameter) particles than the small copepods and, in both groups, some filtering adjustment was made to accomodate to modal changes in the phytoplankton population from 20–30 m to 10 m diameter cells. Particle production during feeding was frequently evident in the smallest size ranges of particles and the ratio of particle production to ingestion rate was greater at low feeding rates.  相似文献

Abstract

Arsenic, one of the most toxic elements, is present naturally in marine organisms at much higher concentrations than in terrestrial organisms. the arsenic contents in two marine bivalves, Crassostrea gigas (Thumberg) and Meretrix lusoria Röding, from Taiwan were investigated. the total arsenic content of C. gigas (33.7–60.5 μg g?1) is higher than that of M. lusoria (30.2–34.6 μg g?1). These two bivalves from Lu-kang contain more arsenic in soft tissues than specimens from other areas (significant at 1%, t-test). On the other hand, samples from Pen-hu contain less arsenic than those from other areas (significant at 5%). the arsenic contents of other Indo-Pacific bivalves are also given for comparison.  相似文献

Samples taken in the northern North Sea with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR), the Undulating Oceanographic Recorder (UOR), the Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR) and by our colleagues from other participating Institutes during the Fladen Ground Experiment (FLEX 76) were used to describe the vertical distribution and population dynamics of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) and to provide estimates of the production and carbon budget of the population from 19 March to 3 June, 1976. Total production of the 19 March to 3 June, 1976. Total production of the nauplii and copepodite stages (including adults), during the exponential growth phase in May, was estimated to be in the range of 0.49 to 0.91 g C m-2 d-1 or 29.0 to 55 g dry wt m-2 (14.5 to 27.8 g C m-2) for the three successive 10 d periods in May. Two gross growth efficiencies (K 1) (20 and 34%), together with the lower value of C. finmarchicus production, were used to calculate the gross ingestion levels of algae as 2.45 and 1.44 g C m-2 d-1 (73.5 and 43.2 g C m-2 over the May period). These ingestion levels, together with the algae ingested by other zooplankton species, are greater than the estimated total phytoplankton production of 45.9 g C m-2 over the FLEX period. A number of factors are discussed which could explain the discrepancies between the production estimates. One suggestion is that the vertical distribution of the development stages of this herbivorous copepod and their diel and ontogenetic migration patterns enable it to efficiently exploit its food source. Data from the FLEX experiment indicated that the depletion of nutrients limited the size of the spring bloom, but that it was the grazing pressure exerted by C. finmarchicus which was responsible for the control and depletion of the phytoplankton in the spring of 1976 in the northern North Sea.JONSDAP Contribution No. 51  相似文献

The pattern of growth (biomass accumulation) in Ecklonia radiata throughout the year and across a depth profile was investigated using the traditional hole-punch method, and the information presented in context with concurrently measured in situ net productivity rates. The rate of net daily productivity showed a lack of consistent seasonal variability, remaining constant throughout the year at two of the four depths measured (3 m and 12 m), and becoming higher during winter at another (5 m). Throughout the year, rates of net daily productivity differed significantly across the depth profile. Net daily productivity rates averaged 0.017 g C g–1 dwt day–1 and 0.005 g C g–1 dwt day–1 at a depth of 3 m (1,394 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) and 10 m (382 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) respectively. In contrast, the biomass accumulation rate of E. radiata was highly seasonal, with low rates of growth occurring in autumn (0.002 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at both 3 and 10 m) and summer (0.007 and 0.004 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and higher rates in spring (0.016 and 0.007 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and winter (0.015 and 0.008 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively). The proportion of assimilated carbon used for biomass accumulation varied throughout the year, between 5% and 41% at 3 m and between 28% and 128% at 10 m. The rates of biomass accumulation at all depths represented only a small proportion of the amount of carbon assimilated annually.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

The copepod community observed during an 18-month period at the mouth of eutrophic Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, was dominated by small species of Parvocalanus, Temora, Oithona, and Corycaeus. Mean copepod biomass was 22.1 mg AFDW m−3 (331 mg m−2). Annual production was 1679 kJ m−2, partitioned as 174 kJ m−2 naupliar, 936 kJ m−2 copepodite, 475 kJ m−2 egg and 93 kJ m−2 exuvial production. All nauplii, most copepodites and many adults, equivalent to half of the biomass and production, were missed by a standard 200-μm plankton net, emphasizing the importance of nauplii and small species in secondary production estimates. The evidence suggests that growth rates and production are generally not food limited, and we speculate that size-selective predation shapes the structure of the harbour community. Biomass and production are higher than previous estimates for tropical coastal waters, but comparable to other eutrophic tropical embayments and many productive temperate ecosystems. Far from being regions of low productivity, tropical zooplankton communities may have significant production and deserve greater research attention than they currently receive.
