The isotopic ratios of sulfur and carbon in the tissues of infanal organisms collected from a natural petroleum seep in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA were examined to see if petroleum is utilized by the benthic community. Sulfur isotope data were consistent with a pathway of petroleum energy from sulfate reducers → H2S → Beggiatoa sp. → nematodes and other infauna. The carbon of infaunal organisms was isotopically lighter at the seep than at a comparison station; the mean δ13C for 12 species was-1.32‰ towards the petroleum δ13C value. The shifts were largest in two species of deep-feeding maldanid polychaetes. The tissues of one of the species, Praxillella affinis pacifica, were also analyzed for 14C content and δ34S, and the biomass produced by the populations over 26 mo was estimated. The results of these analyses allowed us to estimate that for the seep population: (1) there was 15.6% more fossil carbon, (2) chemoautotrophic bacteria contributed 13.6% more carbon, and (3) 19% more carbon was produced by the population over 26 mo. In spite of the possible sources of error, these values are in reasonable agreement. In general, these data infer that, although petroleum utilization by the benthic food web proceeds both directly through heterotrophs and indirectly through chemoautotrophs, the two pathways are tightly coupled. A carbon budget for P. affinis pacifica was constructed with three assumed sources: chemoautotrophic biomass, petroleum carbon utilized heterotrophically, and nonexotic carbon utilized heterotrophically. Calculations based on this budget indicate that the food web is fueled to a greater extent by the isotopically lighter gases than by the liquid oil.  相似文献

At 8 wk intervals, from December 1975 through March 1978, we took a census of the infaunal benthic invertebrates at a natural petroleum seep near Santa Barbara, California, USA and at an area nearby where no fresh petroleum occurred in the sediments. Both sites had in common 72% of the populations representing over 90% of the individuals, strongly suggesting that the two sites are part of the same community. At the petroleum seep there were higher densities of individuals in many populations (60%), but no dramatic difference in diversity (Shannon-Wiener or dominance-diversity). The seep populations tended to be more variable from one sampling period to the next, possibly due, at least in part, to large larval settlements there. The most abundant populations at the seep site were dominated by deposit feeders (14 of the 15 species considered), especially oligochaetes which are extremely rare at the comparison site. The discussion includes a hypothesis of trophic enrichment of the seep populations by bacterial growth stimulated by fresh petroleum.  相似文献

Gonadally mature Platichthys stellatus (Pallas) were captured at two localities in San Francisco Bay in 1983–1985 and were induced to spawn in the laboratory; they were evaluated for relationships between several measures of survival through successive early life-history stages, chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations in maternal liver and spawned eggs, and maternal hepatic mixed-function oxidase (MFO) activity. The effect of laboratory holding on hepatic aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH), a particular MFO activity, and concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons were also evaluated. Significant negative correlations were found between maternal hepatic AHH activity at the time of spawning and percent viable (floating) eggs, fertilization success, and embryological success. Embryological success was also negatively correlated with concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in eggs. Laboratory holding for 45d, about twice the mean time to spawning, resulted in no significant changes in chlorinated hydrocarbon concentrations, but significant decreases in liver concentrations of phthalate esters and hepatic AHH activity. Females captured at the more urbanized central bay site, Berkeley (Bk), had a lesser proportion of floating eggs, poorer fertilization success, and higher hepatic AHH activities than those captured at a site in northern San Pablo Bay (SP). These results indicate the potential for a serious effect of lipophilic neutral organic contaminants on reproduction of an important estuarine flatfish species. Several mechanisms of toxic action are suggested to account for the observed effects, including the binding of toxic metabolites of contaminants to macromolecules and the alteration of sex steroids in females with contaminant-induced P-450 isozyme(s).Some preliminary findings included in this study were presented at the Third International Symposium on Responses of Marine Organisms to Pollutants (Spies et al. 1985 a)  相似文献

The infaunal benthos of a natural oil seep in the Santa Barbara channel   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We are studying a diverse infaunal benthic community that exists in the fine sand sediments of a shallow (16 m) natural oil seep near Santa Barbara, California, USA. The study area and sampling methods are described in this introductory paper. Data presented indicate the adequacy of sampling in revealing horizontal patchiness and vertical faunal distributions. The infauna of the seep and of a nearby comparison area, without seepage but of similar depth and sediment type, are compared. The data indicate a consistently larger but fluctuating density of organisms at the seep station. However, Shannon-Weaver diversity (H=1.6 to 1.7), Peilou's evenness (J=0.80 to 0.81), and measures of dominance-diversity with estimates of graphical skewness (0.66 to 0.68) and kurtosis (1.2 to 1.4) are all similar for the two stations. The rank correlation of common species at the stations is significant according to Spearman's rho. Species common to both stations account for 85 to 95% of the individuals, further indicating the high degree of similarity between stations. Denser populations of oligochaetes and the maldanid polychaete Praxillella affinis pacifica suggest some advantages for deposit feeders at the seep station. Mats of the bacterium Beggiatoa sp. are associated with localized intense oil seepage. Hypotheses suggesting trophic enrichment and biochemical adaptation at the seep are presented.  相似文献

The gastropod Polinices sordidus was collected from an uncontaminated area in Quibray Bay, New South Wales, Australia, in 1990. The snails were exposed for 2 wk to polluted sediments collected from Port Kembla Harbour, Blackwattle Bay, Lake Illawarra, Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and the Derwent River in Tasmania, Australia. Metal accumulation and regulation by this species were evaluated. Metal concentrations in snail tissues and total, EDTA and HCl-extractable metals in the sediments were compared. Copper concentrations were extremely varied in snails exposed to the same sediment. This was not the case for other matals tested. No accumulation of copper was found in snails exposed to different sediments. There was no zinc accumulation from sediments containing less then 10 mg Zn/g. P. sordidus could accumulate lead, manganese and iron from some of the sediments. Manganese concentrations in the snail tissues correlated with total, HCl-extractable and, more significantly, EDTA-extractable Mn in the sediments. P. sordidus was not considered to be a good bioindicator of copper and zinc contaimination in sediments; however, this species could be used as an indicator of lead and manganese contamination.  相似文献

The jellyfish Aurelia aurita (Linnaeus, 1758) is usually considered to be a cosmopolitan species. Aurelia sp. medusae observed at Foster City, San Francisco Bay, California, USA, since 1988 are morphologically distinct from Aurelia sp. collected 200 km away in Monterey Bay, but are morphologically similar to aquarium-cultured Aurelia sp. from Japan. They differ consistently in radial canal morphology. In allozyme electrophoresis, significant differences at 12 of 14 polymorphic loci strongly suggest that Aurelia sp. from Foster City and Tokyo Bay belong to one species, while Aurelia sp. from Monterey Bay and Vancouver Island belong to a second species. We propose that Aurelia sp. at Foster City is a recent introduction, possibly from Japan via ships' ballast water. The identities and taxonomic affinities of the two Aurelia defined in this study, and their relationships with the Linnaen A. aurita described from the North Atlantic, will require genetic and morphological study of the currently recognized species A. aurita and A. limbata (Brandt, 1838) from several zoogeographical provinces.  相似文献

The amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) of the Bay of Fundy is a major food resource for migrating shorebirds. A relatively low total lipid content (ca 1.7%) was found in summer and fall samples of 1986. Analysis of triacylglycerides which would normally reflect an animal diet through fatty acid input, revealed high proportions of fatty acids characteristic of algae. C. volutator contains hydrocarbons (0.2% of total lipids) with a unimodal distribution in the range C18 to C35 with maximum at C25, and a weak odd-carbon preference (carbon preference index, C.P.I. =1.22). This hydrocarbon pattern shown by C. volutator seems to be biogenic, but due to both a weak odd-carbon preference and a significant content of the isoprenoid phytane, the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons cannot be ruled out. Comparison of the hydrocarbon composition be ruled out. Comparison of the hydrocarbon composition found in C. volutator with hydrocarbons described in the literature for its most likely sources of food suggests that highly degraded material and aged detritus are components of the diet of this deposit feeder, and as important as the local diatom population. No organohalogen pesticides (DDT, dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane, or derivatives) or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in the lipid extracts of C. volutator. Absence of these materials and low hydrocarbon levels explain the continued successful exploitation of this food resource by migrating shorebirds.  相似文献

Sediment produced by parrotfishes (family Scaridae) may comprise new bioeroded material and/or reworked sediment. The relative contribution of the two components was examined in two bioeroding Chlorurus species, C. gibbus and C. sordidus, from Lizard Island in the Northern Great Barrier Reef. The relative importance of reworked sediment was determined based on direct estimates of sediment ingestion. In C. gibbus, 2.4% of the sediment produced is reworked. In C. sordidus, reworking contributes 27.2%. Comparisons of sediment size-distributions in epilithic algal communities, gut contents and defaecation sites suggest that both C. gibbus and C. sordidus markedly decrease the particle size of sediment as a result of ingestion and trituration in the pharyngeal apparatus.  相似文献

Sulfur content and fine structure were studied for tissues of three species of clams, Lucinoma annulata, Calyptogena elongata and Lucina floridana, which inhabit sulfide-rich environments and whose gills harbor symbiotic sulfur bacteria. Lucinoma annulata and C. elongata were dredged from the Santa Barbara basin, California, USA, at a depth of 480 to 490 m, and Lucina floridana were dug from below the roots of seagrasses in Saint Joseph Bay, Florida, at a depth of 0.25 to 2m. Foot tissue of Lucinoma annulata, without symbionts, had a total sulfur content of 1.4±0.1 (SD) mg 100 mg-1 dry weight of tissue (%DW). The symbiont-containing gill tissue of different individuals of L. annulata varied in color from dark red to pale yellow, and the total sulfur content was 2.5±0.4% DW in red gills and was 5.6±3.3 % DW in the yellowest gills. Maintenance of L. annulata in the laboratory for 21 d in the absence of sulfide resulted in the loss from the gill of yellow deposits which were elemental sulfur in the form of liquid-crystalline sulfur globules rather than solid orthorhombic sulfur crystals. The foot tissue did not contain elemental sulfur. When examined by freeze-etch microscopy, sulfur globules were found only within bacteria and not in the animal host cytoplasm. Sulfur globules were confined to the periplasmic space of the bacteria. C. elongata and Lucina floridana resembled Lucinoma annulata in the physical form and distribution of elemental sulfur. The absence of elemental sulfur in the animal cytoplasm suggests that its formation from sulfide is not a detoxification scheme to protect animal tissue from sulfide toxicity. The sulfur deposits probably represent inorganic energy reserves that permit the symbiotic bacteria to function even during the temporary absence of external sulfide.  相似文献

The bioluminescent fish Porichthys notatus (plainfin midshipman), has a discontinuous distribution along the Pacific coast of North America. The fish is present from Cape Mendocino southward to Baja California, Mexico, absent off the coast of Oregon, USA, and abundant, northward, in Puget Sound, Washington. Interestingly, the population in Puget Sound lacks the substrate (luciferin) necessary for the luminescence reaction and, despite possessing an otherwise fully functional photophore system, is nonluminescent. The California population of P. notatus is uniformly luminescent south of Monterey Bay, but 15% of the speciments tested from San Francisco Bay and the Gulf of the Farallons have been reported to be nonluminescent. Explanations for nonluminescent midshipman in both Puget Sound and the San Francisco Bay area have focussed on a dietary requirement for luciferin. To gain further insight into reasons for nonluminescence in the San Francisco Bay region, the distribution of bioluminescence in P. notatus was studied from Monterey Bay to Cape Mendocino during 1985. A complex pattern of bioluminescence was found, in which nonluminescent individuals reflected neither a local anomaly in the San Francisco Bay region nor a simple gradient of decreasing luminescence towards the northern end of the range of the California population. Instead, a distinct size-dependent component in luminescence capability of the fish was observed. Aspects of the life history of P. notatus and related factors which might influence the bioluminescence characteristics of this population are discussed. Please address all correspondence to Dr. F.I. Observations from a one-person submersible (Wasp) in fall, 1982, revealed a persistent aggregation of non-migrating, Stage V copepodites of Calanus pacificus californicus Brodsky in a band 20±3 m thick at a depth of 450 m, about 100 m above the bottom of the Santa Barbara Basin, California. Copepod abundances, calculated from nearest-neighbor distances measured directly from the submersible, yielded maximum densities of 26×106 copepodites m-3. Quiescent behavior, low laminarinase activity, low protein content, high lipid content and evidence of low excretion rate all suggest that these copepodites were in a state of diapause. Diapausing C. pacificus californicus at other locations along the eastern Pacific coast were also captured in discrete depth plankton tows. Both the submersible observations and the net collections suggest that the dense aggregation of diapausing copepods we observed in the Santa Barbara Basin was a phenomenon associated with seasonal upwelling cycles, and that such aggregations occur during non-upwelling periods when food is scarce in surface waters. Numerous predators, especially the deep sea smelt Leuroglossus stilbius, were observed feeding upon the aggregated copepods; thus, in contrast to the conventional picture of surface-dominated food distribution, deep-water aggregations of C. pacificus californicus may support the mesopelagic community during periods of low food availability in surface waters.  相似文献

Oxygen transport by the hemocyanin of the protobranch mollusc Solemya reidi Bernard was studied in native hemolymph samples. Clams were collected from two different reducing environments, beneath log booms in Alberni Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, and from the sewage effulent in Santa Monica Bay, California, USA. The hemocyanin concentration in a pooled hemolymph sample (n = 10 individuals) was 33.5 mg ml−1. The mean hemolymph pH of five Alberni clams maintained for 3 wk in mud was 7.96 ± 0.06. No significant variation in hemocyanin oxygen-affinity or cooperativity was found for hemocyanin in whole hemolymph samples from these five individually studied clams. There was a significant difference only at 15 °C in the oxygen affinity of hemocyanin in pooled whole-hemolymph samples from S. reidi collected from Alberni Inlet compared with clams collected from Santa Monica Bay. Little effect of temperature on hemocyanin oxygen-affinity was found for temperatures below 20 °C; above 20 °C, the oxygen affinity was reduced for clams from both sites. Temperature and pH had no apparent affect on hemocyanin cooperativity. Moderate Bohr shifts were found at all temperatures examined. The presence of physiologically relevant concentrations of thiosulphate in hemocyanin samples resulted in a decrease in hemocyanin oxygen-affinity, opposite to the effect on hemocyanin found for the hydrothermal vent crab Byth-ograea thermydron, but thiosulphate had no effect on hemocyanin cooperativity. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in an aquatic ecosystem of River Duero was checked by means of a bioindicator organism: the grey heron (Ardea cinerea). Analyses of water, sediments, fish fat tissues and heron viscera revealed a marked bioaccumulation of organochlorine compounds, particularly hexa‐ and heptachlorinated biphenyls of industrial origin, which may account for the gradual decline in the number of individuals that make up the heron colonies studied.  相似文献

Surface soil samples were taken from a previous electronic waste (E-waste) recycling centerin Taizhou area, Zhejiang province, China. Concentrations, profiles, and possible sources of 19 polychlorinated biphenyls and 7 poly-brominated diphenyl ethers were analyzed to assess their current state in the soil after phase out of massive dismantling of E-wastes. The concentrations of the 7 polybrominated diphenyl ethers ranged from 11 to 128 µg kg?1 with an average of 41 ± 10 µg kg?1 (dw), with 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromdiphenyl ether being the most abundant. These values were substantially lower than the levels in 2006. The concentrations of the 19 polychlorinated biphenyls ranged from 36 to 760 µg kg?1, with an average of 181 ± 68 µgkg?1 (dw) which was also lower than the levels in 1995 or 2006. However, the concentrations of some tetra-, penta- and hexa-chlorobiphenyls were comparable or even higher than before. Furthermore, the average concentration of 7 indicator polychlorinated biphenyls was 108 ± 41 µg kg?1(dw) which exceeded the New Dutch List target value of 20 µgkg?1. Principal component analysis indicated that polychlorinated biphenyls were mainly distributed into three groups in accordance with the number of chlorine atoms and anthropogenic source. Therefore, the impact of the historical dismantling of E-wastes is still significant.  相似文献

We captured two species of deep-sea zoarcids, Melanostigma pammelas and Lycodapus mandibularis, from Monterey Bay California and maintained them in the laboratory. One shallow-water zoarcid, Eucryphycus californicus, and an ecologically and morphologically similar stichaeid fish Xiphister atropurpureus were collected from intertidal and subtidal habitats in Monterey Bay. We investigated the absorption and assimilation efficiencies of these fishes to determine whether deep-sea species have evolved mechanisms to increase their efficiency of food use. Fishes were placed in experimental chambers and fed a known quantity of food. Ammonia excretion was measured and feces were collected daily. Both food and feces were analyzed for water, protein, lipid and ash to determine specific absorption efficiencies. Absorption ranged from 87.7 to 92.4% and assimilation efficiencies from 84.0 to 86.5%. Meal sizes from 0.5 to 4.0% of body weight did not affect the results. No significant differences were found between deep-sea and shallow-water species fed single meals or fed ad libitum for 10 days. This suggests that the selective pressure to maximize absorption and assimilation is universal and is not affected by the productivity of the habitat occupied. However, the relative size of the intestine in the deep-sea species was significantly smaller suggesting that they had a lower metabolic cost to maintain their digestive apparatus. It could not be concluded whether this was the result of pressure to conserve energy or rather the tendency of the shallow-living species to ingest more refractory material (i.e. sediment, algae).  相似文献

Plutonium contents of various species of molluscs sampled from several sites along the French coast were measured in order to reveal any distributional patterns of the plutonium levels. The influence of the La Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plant was apparent in the immediate proximity of the waste-disposal outfall (Ecalgrain Bay), and to a lesser degree in an oyster farming center situated about 50 km east of the Bay of Ecalgrain (St. Vaast-la-Hougue). Plutonium concentrations in molluscs from the remaining sites were quite comparable to levels that have been measured in similar species subject only to plutonium derived from atmospheric fallout. All molluscs, except those from Ecalgrain Bay, displayed higher levels of plutonium in the shell than in the soft parts, a finding in agreement with similar studies which have been reported recently. However, those individuals sampled from the vicinity of the outfall consistently displayed shell: soft parts plutonium ratios of less than 1. This difference may reflect different physico-chemical forms of this isotope present at the different sampling stations. With the exception of Crepidula fornicata shell, the tissues of filter-feeding molluscs do not appear to concentrate plutonium above the level found in other types of molluscs.

Marine communities are experiencing unprecedented rates of species homogenization due to the increasing success of invasive species, but little is known about the mechanisms that allow a species to invade and persist in a new habitat. In central California, native (Mytilus trossulus Gould 1850) and invasive (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck 1819) blue mussels and their hybrids co-exist, providing an opportunity to analyze the mechanisms that determine the distributions of these taxa. Spatial and temporal variation in temperature and salinity and the relative frequencies of these mussel taxa were examined between 2000 and 2004 at four sites in San Francisco Bay and four in Monterey Bay, which were chosen for their different positions along inferred estuarine/oceanic gradients in the hybrid zone. Mussels were genetically identified as the parent species or hybrids by amplifying regions of two species-specific loci: the adhesive byssal thread protein (Glu-5′) and the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (ITS 1). The proportion of M. trossulus at the eight hybrid zone sites correlated negatively with average salinity (R 2=0.60) and positively with maximal temperature (R 2≥0.72), a somewhat unexpected result given what is known about the phylogeography of this species. The proportion of M. galloprovincialis showed the opposite pattern. The proportion of hybrids was correlated neither with habitat temperature nor salinity. Genotypes of mussel populations at an additional 13 sites from Coos Bay, Oregon (latitude 43.35°N) to Long Beach, California (latitude 33.72°N), sampled at various intervals between 2000 and 2004, were also determined. This survey confirmed previous reports that the hybrid zone lies between Monterey and the Cape Mendocino region (latitudes 36.63°N–40.5°N). Within Monterey and San Francisco Bays, however, the temporal comparisons (1990s vs. 2000s) revealed abrupt changes in the proportions of the two parent species and their hybrids on annual and decadal time scales. These changes indicate that the blue mussel populations are in a highly dynamic state. The survey also showed that, regardless of habitat, M. trossulus is consistently of smaller average size than either M. galloprovincialis or hybrids.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were recorded in sediment and fish samples collected from the western coast of Alexandria. Total hydrocarbons (aliphatic+PAHs ) in sediment ranged from 683.8 to 34670.1 ng g ?1 with an average of 9286.9 ng g ?1. The sum of C16–C34 of aliphatic fractions was<4000?ng g;?1, indicating the presence of a fresh petroleum source. For all sediments, the anthracene/phenanthrene ratio was>0.1, suggesting the dominance of a pyrolytic source. Total aliphatics in different fish species ranged from 253 to 11?132 ng g;?1, while total PAHs ranged from 3862 to 35?746 ng g;?1 wet weight. Benzo[a]pyrene was the most dominant PAH fraction ranged from 1902.7 to 32 905.5 with an average of 9464.5?ng g;?1 wet weight in all fish species. Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) ranged from 0.79 to 64.9?ng g;?1 with an average 12.14?ng g;?1 wet weight. The concentrations of organochlorines in fish species (Euthynnus alleferatus, Scomberomorus commerson, Sphyraena Sphyraena, Diplodus vulgaris, and Alepes djedaba) decreased following the order: PCBs>DDTs>HCHs>total cyclodienes. Concentrations of DDTs in fish tissues ranged from 4.89 to 36.37 ng g?1 with an average of 16.4?ng g;?1 wet weight. The concentrations of total HCHs ranged from 0.3 to 65.7?ng g;?1 with an average of 16.35?ng g;?1. The present study indicates: (1) fresh petroleum input where Pr/Ph>1; (2) PAHs in sediment<4000 ng g ?1; (3) BaP concentration exceeded the permissible levels in Alepes djedaba species; (4) DDTs in sediment were below the effective range low level; (5) PCBs>effective range low and相似文献

Geographic variation in mitochondrial large subunit (16S) ribosomal RNA haplotypes was examined for blue mussels, Mytilus trossulus Gould, 1850 and M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819, sampled from ten sites along the Pacific coast of the USA in January of 1993. Using polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR/RFLP) assays we determined haplotype frequencies for both the male and female mussel mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages. Populations from Morro Bay south to San Diego, California, contained only M. galloprovincialis male and female haplotypes, while those from Arcata Bay, California, north to Port Orford, Oregon, were fixed for M. trossulus haplotypes. Populations from Monterey Bay to Bodega Bay, California, contained a mixture of M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis haplotypes. Overall only 2 of 97 heteroplasmic individuals had a mixed M. trossulus/M. galloprovincialis mitochondrial genotype indicating that hybridization is uncommon in the populations sampled. Further, there was no evidence of extensive introgression between these mussel taxa at the level of mtDNA. This is in contrast to previously published results which suggested the significant introgression of M. trossulus haplotypes into southern populations containing primarily M. galloprovincialis nuclear genotypes. We feel the discrepancy lies in the ability of our assays to detect haplotypes corresponding to both the male and female mtDNA lineages. Potential explanations for the lack of mtDNA introgression include, low levels of backcrossing between hybrids and parental taxa, epistatic interaction between nuclear and mitochondrial genes and the breakdown of a sex-specific inheritance pattern for mtDNA in hybrids.  相似文献
