Data collected from 172 sites in 20 major river basins between 1993 and 1995 as part of the US Geological Survey's National
Water-Quality Assessment Program were analyzed to assess relations among basinwide land use (agriculture, forest, urban, range),
water physicochemistry, riparian condition, and fish community structure. A multimetric approach was used to develop regionally
referenced indices of fish community and riparian condition. Across large geographic areas, decreased riparian condition was
associated with water-quality constituents indicative of nonpoint source inputs—total nitrogen and suspended sediment and
basinwide urban land use. Decreased fish community condition was associated with increases in total dissolved solids and rangeland
use and decreases in riparian condition and agricultural land use. Fish community condition was relatively high even in areas
where agricultural land use was relatively high (>50% of the basin). Although agricultural land use can have deleterious effects
on fish communities, the results of this study suggest that other factors also may be important, including practices that
regulate the delivery of nutrients, suspended sediments, and total dissolved solids into streams. Across large geographic
scales, measures of water physicochemistry may be better indicators of fish community condition than basinwide land use. Whereas
numerous studies have indicated that riparian restorations are successful in specific cases, this analysis suggests the universal
importance of riparian zones to the maintenance and restoration of diverse fish communities in streams. 相似文献

Human impacts on the stream-groundwater exchange zone 总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Hancock PJ 《Environmental management》2002,29(6):763-781
Active exchanges of water and dissolved material between the stream and groundwater in many porous sand- and gravel-bed rivers
create a dynamic ecotone called the hyporheic zone. Because it lies between two heavily exploited freshwater resources—rivers
and groundwater—the hyporheic zone is vulnerable to impacts coming to it through both of these habitats. This review focuses
on the direct and indirect effects of human activity on ecosystem functions of the hyporheic zone. River regulation, mining,
agriculture, urban, and industrial activities all have the potential to impair interstitial bacterial and invertebrate biota
and disrupt the hydrological connections between the hyporheic zone and stream, groundwater, riparian, and floodplain ecosystems.
Until recently, our scientific ignorance of hyporheic processes has perhaps excused the inclusion of this ecotone in river
management policy. However, this no longer is the case as we become increasingly aware of the central role that the hyporheic
zone plays in the maintenance of water quality and as a habitat and refuge for fauna. To fully understand the impacts of human
activity on the hyporheic zone, river managers need to work with scientists to conduct long-term studies over large stretches
of river. River rehabilitation and protection strategies need to prevent the degradation of linkages between the hyporheic
zone and surrounding habitats while ensuring that it remains isolated from toxicants. Strategies that prevent anthropogenic
restriction of exchanges may include the periodic release of environmental flows to flush silt and reoxygenate sediments,
maintenance of riparian buffers, effective land use practices, and suitable groundwater and surface water extraction policies. 相似文献

This article critically reviews the evolution of urban environmental management in Shanghai since 1978. Established in a transitional
postsocialist economy and shaped by a spectacular urban redevelopment process, the current environmental management framework
of Shanghai has succeeded in mitigating major industrial pollution and improving urban amenities with unprecedented pace and
magnitude. However, it generally failed to take social equity and environmental justice issues into consideration. Based on
Haughton’s models of sustainable urban development, this article proposes four priorities and five principles within the framework
of a fair shares cities model for the future environmental management of Shanghai and briefly discusses their policy implications
and implementation issues. The authors argue that Haughton’s approach is relevant to Shanghai’s case because the essence of
his argument—the multidimensional equity principles—is the core of the concept of sustainable development. 相似文献

We sampled 41 sites on 34 nonwadeable rivers that represent the types of rivers in Wisconsin, and the kinds and intensities
of nutrient and other anthropogenic stressors upon each river type. Sites covered much of United States Environmental Protection
Agency national nutrient ecoregions VII—Mostly Glaciated Dairy Region, and VIII—Nutrient Poor, Largely Glaciated upper Midwest.
Fish, macroinvertebrates, and three categories of environmental variables including nutrients, other water chemistry, and
watershed features were collected using standard protocols. We summarized fish assemblages by index of biotic integrity (IBI)
and its 10 component measures, and macroinvertebrates by 2 organic pollution tolerance and 12 proportional richness measures.
All biotic and environmental variables represented a wide range of conditions, with biotic measures ranging from poor to excellent
status, despite nutrient concentrations being consistently higher than reference concentrations reported for the regions.
Regression tree analyses of nutrients on a suite of biotic measures identified breakpoints in total phosphorus (~0.06 mg/l)
and total nitrogen (~0.64 mg/l) concentrations at which biotic assemblages were consistently impaired. Redundancy analyses
(RDA) were used to identify the most important variables within each of the three environmental variable categories, which
were then used to determine the relative influence of each variable category on the biota. Nutrient measures, suspended chlorophyll
a, water clarity, and watershed land cover type (forest or row-crop agriculture) were the most important variables and they
explained significant amounts of variation within the macroinvertebrate (R
2
= 60.6%) and fish (R
2
= 43.6%) assemblages. The environmental variables selected in the macroinvertebrate model were correlated to such an extent
that partial RDA analyses could not attribute variation explained to individual environmental categories, assigning 89% of
the explained variation to interactions among the categories. In contrast, partial RDA attributed much of the explained variation
to the nutrient (25%) and other water chemistry (38%) categories for the fish model. Our analyses suggest that it would be
beneficial to develop criteria based upon a suite of biotic and nutrient variables simultaneously to deem waters as not meeting
their designated uses. 相似文献

This paper explores the influence and use of agrarian thought on collective understandings of food practices as sources of ethical and communal value in urban contexts. A primary proponent of agrarian thought that this paper engages is Paul Thompson and his exceptional book, The Agrarian Vision. Thompson aims to use agrarian ideals of agriculture and communal life to rethink current issues of sustainability and environmental ethics. However, Thompson perceives the current cultural mood as hostile to agrarian virtue. There are two related claims of this paper. The first argues that contrary to Thompson’s perception of hostility, agrarian thought is popularly and commercially mobilized among urban populations. To establish this claim I extend Charles Taylor’s notion of a social imaginary and suggest that urban agriculture can be theorized as an agrarian imaginary. Entwined with the first claim is the second, that proponents selectively use agrarian history to overemphasis a narrative of virtue while ignoring or marginalizing historical practices of agrarian violence, exclusion and dispossession. I do not discount or deny the significance of agrarian virtue. By situating agrarian thought within a clearer virtue ethics framework and acknowledging potential manifestation of agrarian vice, I suggest that the idea of agrarian virtue is strengthened. 相似文献

In public debates, agricultural biotechnology is almost invariably discussed as a potential threat to the environment and to human health. Without downplaying the risks associated with this technology we emphasize that if properly regulated, it can be a forceful tool to solve environmental problems and promote human health. Agricultural biotechnology can reduce environmental problems in at least three ways: it can diminish the need for environmentally damaging agricultural practices such as pesticides, fertilizers, tillage, and irrigation. It can reduce the land area needed for agriculture, thus reducing the CO2 effect of agriculture and improving biodiversity. It can produce energy in a CO2-neutral way (especially if new technologies involving the cultivation of microalgae become successful). Furthermore, agricultural biotechnology can have positive effects on human health by decreasing occupational and dietary exposure to pesticides, improving the nutritional value of food, and producing pharmaceuticals more efficiently. We argue that those who wish to give high priority to environmental goals cannot afford any longer to be mere onlookers while others decide the future directions of agricultural biotechnology. 相似文献

Amidst recent moves to rethink environmental justice, this article cautions against retention of distributive conceptions of injustice. Instead, analysis of production and normalisation of difference is explored as a way to shift the lens of environmental justice scholarship away from distributional explanations of injustice and towards critical engagement with the politics of meaning that structure environmental practice. I argue that such a shift would offer an alternative to the liberal spatial frameworks that articulate understandings of environmental justice and environment society relations, facilitating instead relational conceptions of space and engagement with space as a representational media and medium of power. I also propose that methodologically such a shift would require discursive analysis of practices of difference making. Examples from research into the management of nuclear fuel waste in Canada are used to illustrate the arguments. 相似文献

Assessing Integrated Pest Management Adoption: Measurement Problems and Policy Implications 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
For more than a decade, the U.S. government has promoted integrated pest management (IPM) to advance sustainable agriculture.
However, the usefulness of this practice has been questioned because of lagging implementation. There are at least two plausible
rationales for the slow implementation: (1) growers are not adopting IPM—for whatever reason—and (2) current assessment methods
are inadequate at assessing IPM implementation. Our research addresses the second plausibility. We suggest that the traditional
approach to measuring IPM implementation on its own fails to assess the distinct, biologically hierarchical components of
IPM, and instead aggregates growers’ management practices into an overall adoption score. Knowledge of these distinct components
and the extent to which they are implemented can inform government officials as to how they should develop targeted assistance
programs to encourage broader IPM use. We address these concerns by assessing the components of IPM adoption and comparing
our method to the traditional approach alone. Our results indicate that there are four distinct components of adoption—weed,
insect, general, and ecosystem management—and that growers implement the first two components significantly more often than
the latter two. These findings suggest that using a more nuanced measure to assess IPM adoption that expands on the traditional
approach, allows for a better understanding of the degree of IPM implementation. 相似文献

Optimum natural resource management and biodiversity conservation are desirable goals. These, however, often exclude each
other, since maximum economic benefits have promoted drastic reductions in biodiversity throughout the world. This dilemma
confronts local stakeholders, who usually go for maximizing economic inputs, whereas other social (e.g., academic) sectors
are favor conservation practices. In this paper we describe the way two scientific approaches—landscape and participatory
research—were used to develop sound and durable land use scenarios. These two approaches included expert knowledge of both
social and environmental conditions in indigenous communities. Our major emphasis was given to detect spatially explicit land
use scenarios and capacity building in order to construct a decision support system operated by stakeholders of the Comunidad
Indigena de Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro in Mexico. The system for decision-making was fed with data from inventories of
both abiotic and biotic biodiversity components. All research, implementation, and monitoring activities were conducted in
close collaboration with members of the indigenous community. As a major result we obtained a number of forest alternative
uses that favor emerging markets and make this indigenous community less dependent on a single market. Furthermore, skilled
members of the community are now running the automated system for decision-making. In conclusion, our results were better
expressed as products with direct benefits in local livelihoods rather than pure academic outputs. 相似文献

Conservation planning aims to protect biodiversity by sustainng the natural physical, chemical, and biological processes within
representative ecosystems. Often data to measure these components are inadequate or unavailable. The impact of human activities
on ecosystem processes complicates integrity assessments and might alter ecosystem organization at multiple spatial scales.
Freshwater conservation targets, such as populations and communities, are influenced by both intrinsic aquatic properties
and the surrounding landscape, and locally collected data might not accurately reflect potential impacts. We suggest that
changes in five major biotic drivers—energy sources, physical habitat, flow regime, water quality, and biotic interactions—might
be used as surrogates to inform conservation planners of the ecological integrity of freshwater ecosystems. Threats to freshwater
systems might be evaluated based on their impact to these drivers to provide an overview of potential risk to conservation
targets. We developed a risk-based protocol, the Ecological Risk Index (ERI), to identify watersheds with least/most risk
to conservation targets. Our protocol combines risk-based components, specifically the frequency and severity of human-induced
stressors, with biotic drivers and mappable land- and water-use data to provide a summary of relative risk to watersheds.
We illustrate application of our protocol with a case study of the upper Tennessee River basin, USA. Differences in risk patterns
among the major drainages in the basin reflect dominant land uses, such as mining and agriculture. A principal components
analysis showed that localized, moderately severe threats accounted for most of the threat composition differences among our
watersheds. We also found that the relative importance of threats is sensitive to the spatial grain of the analysis. Our case
study demonstrates that the ERI is useful for evaluating the frequency and severity of ecosystemwide risk, which can inform
local and regional conservation planning. 相似文献

Summary The problems of man’s increasing abuse and misuse of his environment are multiplying in direct proportion to the increase
in the human population. This is particularly true of much of the Third World, where often a low level of literacy is accompanied
by a steadily growing birthrate. Small island habitats, because of their long geological separation from the large land masses
frequently have flora and fauna that are unique but the pressures on their environment are considerably greater. In the struggle
to compete in an increasingly mechanised and industrial world they are forced to devastate the natural habitat of many of
their indigenous species in order to obtain agricultural land, building materials and fuel. While wooing the tourist market
on the one hand with the beauty of their beaches, they are at the same time removing the sand wholesale for construction purposes.
If the people themselves are to survive, industrial growth is quite obviously essential. Because the practices that at present
place the environment under threat are, in many cases, vital to the individual’s ability to support himself, reasonable alternatives
must be offered before they can be effectively controlled.
Ms Maria Grech came to Saint Lucia originally in 1961 and spent almost eighteen years in the restaurant business. When she
sold out in 1979 she decided to devote more time to writing and specifically to writing about the island which had become
her home. For two years now she has written and illustrated a monthly conservation news-sheet that is distributed throughout
the schools here by the local Forestry Division. In November 1981 the paper—Bush Talk—was awarded a prize for creative journalism and funding is now being sought to have it published in book form.

ABSTRACT: The U.S. Geological Survey examined 25 agricultural streams in eastern Wisconsin the determine relations between fish, invertebrate, and algal metrics and multiple spatial scales of land cover, geologic setting, hydrologic, aquatic habitat, and water chemistry data. Spearman correlation and redundancy analyses were used to examine relations among biotic metrics and environmental characteristics. Riparian vegetation, geologic, and hydrologic conditions affected the response of biotic metrics to watershed agricultural land cover but the relations were aquatic assemblage dependent. It was difficult to separate the interrelated effects of geologic setting, watershed and buffer land cover, and base flow. Watershed and buffer land cover, geologic setting, reach riparian vegetation width, and stream size affected the fish IBI, invertebrate diversity, diatom IBI, and number of algal taxa; however, the invertebrate FBI, percentage of EPT, and the diatom pollution index were more influenced by nutrient concentrations and flow variability. Fish IBI scores seemed most sensitive to land cover in the entire stream network buffer, more so than watershed‐scale land cover and segment or reach riparian vegetation width. All but one stream with more than approximately 10 percent buffer agriculture had fish IBI scores of fair or poor. In general, the invertebrate and algal metrics used in this study were not as sensitive to land cover effects as fish metrics. Some of the reach‐scale characteristics, such as width/depth ratios, velocity, and bank stability, could be related to watershed influences of both land cover and geologic setting. The Wisconsin habitat index was related to watershed geologic setting, watershed and buffer land cover, riparian vegetation width, and base flow, and appeared to be a good indicator of stream quality Results from this study emphasize the value of using more than one or two biotic metrics to assess water quality and the importance of environmental characteristics at multiple scales. 相似文献

Agricultural non–point source (NPS) pollution poses a severe threat to water quality and aquatic ecosystems. In response,
tremendous efforts have been directed toward reducing these pollution inputs by implementing agricultural conservation practices.
Although conservation practices reduce pollution inputs from individual fields, scaling pollution control benefits up to the
watershed level (i.e., improvements in stream water quality) has been a difficult challenge. This difficulty highlights the
need for NPS reduction programs that focus efforts within target watersheds and at specific locations within target watersheds,
with the ultimate goal of improving stream water quality. Fundamental program design features for NPS control programs—i.e.,
number of watersheds in the program, total watershed area, and level of effort expended within watersheds—have not been considered
in any sort of formal analysis. Here, we present an optimization model that explores the programmatic and environmental trade-offs
between these design choices. Across a series of annual program budgets ranging from $2 to $200 million, the optimal number
of watersheds ranged from 3 to 27; optimal watershed area ranged from 29 to 214 km2; and optimal expenditure ranged from $21,000 to $35,000/km2. The optimal program configuration was highly dependent on total program budget. Based on our general findings, we delineated
hydrologically complete and spatially independent watersheds ranging in area from 20 to 100 km2. These watersheds are designed to serve as implementation units for a targeted NPS pollution control program currently being
developed in Wisconsin. 相似文献

Local Responses to Inundation and De-Farming in the Reservoir Region of the Three Gorges Project (China) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Large-scale infrastructural developments in rural areas often impose significant direct and indirect impacts on environment
and people. The Three Gorges Project to dam the Yangtze River in China will create a huge reservoir, inundate farmlands and
villages, and incur large-scale resettlement. The concurrent de-farming program to reforest marginal farmlands on steep slopes
imposes additional stresses on local people. This study evaluates the ecological and economic adjustments in rural areas affected
by both projects, and explores villagers’ knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and expectations vis-à-vis the drastic changes.
Eleven villages in Yunyang County in Sichuan Province, stratified into three zones based on topography and agriculture, were
assessed by field studies, questionnaire surveys, maps, satellite imagery, and census and government reports. Multiple regressions
identified predictors for 17 dependent variables. Spatial variations in the difficult terrain imposed zone-differentiated
agricultural constraints, ecological impacts, and human responses. The dominant farming population—mainly young adults working
as migrant laborers in cities—has adopted some nonagricultural work to supplement incomes. Expected per-capita standardized
farmland (SF) exceeded threshold SF, which surpasses existing SF. Motivations to reclaim more farmlands, de-farm marginal
lands, and become migrant laborers were explained by different multiple-regression predictors. Reduction in farmland stock
by inundation and de-farming, aggravated by unwillingness towards nonlocal resettlement, would impose ecological pressures
and stimulate demands for nonfarming incomes. Common anticipation of better future income and occupation has been subdued
by unfavorable feedbacks from early relocatees. Future environmental and landscape changes are hinged upon changing human
responses. Government policies could be informed by research findings to match economic, ecological, and social realities. 相似文献

Human urine as a source of alternative natural fertilizer in agriculture: A flight of fancy or an achievable reality 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Organically agricultural products are gaining popularities through out the world as it gives the consumer satisfaction with a basket of safer and better trusted foods. It is also well established that intensive conventional agricultural practices can introduce contaminants into the food chain with adverse affect on environment. However, organic agricultural practices give an alternative environmental friendly sustainable agriculture among the farmers. Beside this fact, organic crops contain fewer nitrates, nitrites, pesticide residues and trace elements than conventional crops. Even though, in organic systems generally have 20% lower yields than conventionally produced crops. One of the major constrains of organic farming is decrease of raw organic matters to prepare compost. Therefore, scientists are looking forward for different organic sources which are plenty in nature and available at little-to-no cost. Human urine is one of them, and has been gaining popularities as a raw material for organic cultivation. However, several important merits and demerits of application of human urine are needed to be addressed in agriculture. 相似文献

An important implication of agricultural modernization has been the break-down of interlinkages between farming, ecology and society. Historically, farming systems evolved from the specific responses of farming communities to local ecological conditions. The totality of regionalized farming systems arising out of this co-production moulded the countryside into an ‘archipelago’ of differentiated ruralities. During the period of agricultural modernization, the nature of co-production changed thoroughly. The natural elements in co-production were increasingly artificialized or replaced by industrial artefacts. This paper analyses the emergence of environmental cooperatives in the Netherlands as a movement towards a renewed embedding of farming in its local environment. Environmental cooperatives are local farmers associations that promote activities related to sustainable agriculture and rural development and claim to be actively involved in effectuating rural policies in their locale. Since the foundation of the first cooperative in 1992, numbers have rapidly grown to over 100. This paper examines the genesis and practices of environmental cooperatives and assesses their socio-economic and ecological impact. The importance lies most of all, so the authors contend, in that they represent valuable ‘field laboratories’ for building stimulating and supportive institutional contexts for remodelling Dutch farming along the lines of environmental and economic sustainability. Intensive Livestock Farming: Global Trends, Increased Environmental Concerns, and Ethical Solutions 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ramona Cristina Ilea 《Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics》2009,22(2):153-167
By 2050, global livestock production is expected to double—growing faster than any other agricultural sub-sector—with most
of this increase taking place in the developing world. As the United Nation’s four-hundred-page report, Livestock’s Long Shadow: Environmental Issues and Options, documents, livestock production is now one of three most significant contributors to environmental problems, leading to
increased greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, water pollution, and increased health problems. The paper draws on the
UN report as well as a flurry of other recently published studies in order to demonstrate the effect of intensive livestock
production on global warming and on people’s health. The paper’s goal is to outline the problems caused by intensive livestock
farming and analyze a number of possible solutions, including legislative changes and stricter regulations, community mobilizing,
and consumers choosing to decrease their demand for animal products. 相似文献

Agricultural technologies are non-neutral and ethical challenges are posed by these technologies themselves. The technologies
we use or endorse are embedded with values and norms and reflect the shape of our moral character. They can literally make
us better or worse consumers and/or people. Looking back, when the world’s developed nations welcomed and steadily embraced
industrialization as the dominant paradigm for agriculture a half century or so ago, they inadvertently championed a philosophy
of technology that promotes an insular human-centricism, despite its laudable intent to ensure food security and advance human
flourishing. The dominant philosophy of technology has also seeded particular ethical consequences that plague the well-being
of human beings, the planet, and farmed animals. After revisiting some fundamental questions regarding the complex ways in
which technology as agent shapes our lives and choices and relegates food and farmed constituents into technological artifacts or commodities, I argue
that we should accord an environmental virtue ethic of care—understood as caretaking—a central place in developing a more
conscientious philosophy of technology that aims at sustainability, fairness, and humaneness in animal agriculture. While
technology shapes society, it also is socially shaped and an environmental virtue ethic of care (EVEC) as an alternative design
philosophy has the tools to help us take a much overdue inventory of ourselves and our relationships with the nonhuman world.
It can help us to expose the ways in which technology hinders critical reflection of its capacity to alter communities and
values, to come to terms with why we may be, in general, disengaged from critical ethical analysis of contemporary agriculture
and to consider the moral shape and trajectory and the sustainability of our food production systems going into the future.
I end by outlining particular virtues associated with the ethic of care discussed here and consider some likely implications
for consumers and industry technocrats as they relate to farming animals. 相似文献

The necessity of incorporating societal and environmental concerns into publicly funded agricultural initiatives in research, extension, and practice is increasingly evident. Agriculturalists are urged to acknowledge and respond to societal concerns before an insensitive and largely ill-informed urban majority assumes a dominant posture in agricultural policy. In recent history, the availability of unrealistically cheap energy encouraged the evolution of a form of commercial agriculture unfettered by sound ecological principles. At present, external, resource-intensive intervention of increasing magnitude is needed to compensate for the apparent ecological instability generated by practices such as intensive cereal management or conservation tillage practices. Polarization of the enterprises of plant and animal agriculture to enable centralized, concentrate-intensive, confinement feeding has disrupted the natural cycling of nutrients and carbon in the soil, encouraged the withdrawal of perennial forages from crop rotations, and invoked a widely ramifying network of agricultural and societal problems. Solutions to these problems must evolve from a holistic and far-reaching appraisal of causes, rather than from a piecemeal approach to individual symptoms. 相似文献

The Netherlands is a small country with many people and much livestock. As a result, animals in nature reservations are often living near cattle farms. Therefore, people from the agricultural practices are afraid that wild animals will infect domestic livestock with diseases like Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth Disease. To protect agriculture (considered as an important economic practice), very strict regulations have been made for minimizing this risk. In this way, the practice of animal farming has been dominating the practices of nature management completely. If, for instance, Foot and Mouth Disease strikes an agricultural area, all wild pigs and cattle living in the nearby nature reservations have to be killed, whether infected or not. This dominant position of one practice over the other has now become problematic. While the morality of the practice of nature management seems to be very different from the morality of agriculture and agriculture has become less important from an economic point of view, the public as well as those involved in nature management no longer seem to accept the dominant position of agriculture. Besides a literature study, we performed a field study with in-depth interviews with experts from both practices to analyze the dynamics of the internal moralities of both practices in the previous century, in order to clarify the contemporary situation. The conclusion was that the traditionally strong position of agriculture is not only weakening; it also appears that the internal values of agriculture are changing. The experts from both sides agreed that, in case of a disease outbreak, it is neither ethically justified nor necessary (because of the estimated low risk of disease transfer) to destroy the animals in nature reservations as a routine preventive measure. This is a major shift in morality. 相似文献
