This paper reviews methods for carbon-14 dating using accelerators. 14C is accelerated to high energies. Subsequently 14C is separated from 14N by passing it through a xenon gas cell or electrostatic separator. Advantages, limits and applications of the techniques are discussed.  相似文献

Fly ash samples were collected from the electrostatic precipitator of a coal-fired power plant in Hong Kong. The particles of the respirable range (smaller than 10 μm) were divided into 4 groups according to their particle size (mass median aerodynamic diameters). The surface morphology and the metal contents (Fe, Mn, Al and Zn) of fly ash particles were examined by a scanning electron microscope and an inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer, respectively. The particles were very heterogenous in size and shape as well as the concentration of metals. The cytotoxicity of these four groups of fly ash particles was evaluated using an in vitro rat alveolar macrophages culture assay. The viability of alveolar macrophages was lower when incubated with smaller size particles. This relationship was also reflected by the damage of the surface morphology of the cells and the release of cytoplasmic (lactate dehydrogenase) and lysosomal (acid phosphatase and β-glucuronidase) marker enzymes into the culture media.  相似文献

In most aqueous environmental systems, inorganic and organic metal complexes represent a significant contribution to the total soluble metal. Metal adsorption is often a highly pH-dependent phenomena. Such behavior can generally be attributed to changes in metal speciation with solution acidity as well as variation in the extent of surface protonation. Thus, because adsorbability may vary drastically between different metal species, (e.g. Cu2+ (aq) compared to CuOH+) a knowledge of metal species distribution is essential to understanding and interpreting metal adsorption behavior.Organic complexation has been reported to enhance, suppress and have no perceptible effect on trace metal adsorption. Such differences arise because adsorption depends on factors such as the ligand/metal ratio, adsorbability of the free ligand, and various solution parameters (e.g. pH). Most important in determining the effect of complexation on adsorption is the adsorbability of the resulting complexes. Thus, it is difficult to make generalizations about the influence of organic complexation on metal adsorption.Adsorption of metal complexes is frequently reported to be predominantly coulombic in nature; that is, binding of an anionic or cationic complex to an oppositely charged colloidal particle. However, electrostatic forces can often represent an insignificant contribution to the total free energy of adsorption and can be overshadowed by chemical reactions with the surface, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic effects.  相似文献

We characterized flame retardant (FR) morphologies and spatial distributions in 7 consumer products and 7 environmental dusts to determine their implications for transfer mechanisms, human exposure, and the reproducibility of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) dust measurements. We characterized individual particles using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and Raman micro-spectroscopy (RMS). Samples were screened for the presence of 3 FR constituents (bromine, phosphorous, non-salt chlorine) and 2 metal synergists (antimony and bismuth). Subsequent analyses of select samples by RMS enabled molecular identification of the FR compounds and matrix materials. The consumer products and dust samples possessed FR elemental weight percents of up to 36% and 31%, respectively. We identified 24 FR-containing particles in the dust samples and classified them into 9 types based on morphology and composition. We observed a broad range of morphologies for these FR-containing particles, suggesting FR transfer to dust via multiple mechanisms. We developed an equation to describe the heterogeneity of FR-containing particles in environmental dust samples. The number of individual FR-containing particles expected in a 1-mg dust sample with a FR concentration of 100 ppm ranged from < 1 to > 1000 particles. The presence of rare, high-concentration bromine particles was correlated with decabromodiphenyl ether concentrations obtained via GC–MS. When FRs are distributed heterogeneously in highly concentrated dust particles, human exposure to FRs may be characterized by high transient exposures interspersed by periods of low exposure, and GC–MS FR concentrations may exhibit large variability in replicate subsamples. Current limitations of this SEM/EDS technique include potential false negatives for volatile and chlorinated FRs and greater quantitation uncertainty for brominated FR in aluminum-rich matrices.  相似文献

Among the separation techniques used in industries, the triboelectric separation of insulating particles using a rotary tube is an effective way employed in the waste recovery of plastic and mineral products. This process, also called free-fall triboelectric separation, is widely used for the sorting of granular mixtures resulting from industrial plastic wastes. Given that the robustness of such a separation process is an important issue, a standard procedure is used for determining the set point and for minimising the process sensitivity of sorting mixed particles of different polymers to changes in the values of some critical factors. The aim of this paper was to analyse the efficiency of the triboelectric separation process of polymers with respect to any slight variation in the values of the most significant factors. Experiments with a sample of high-density polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride plastic granules were carried out on a laboratory experimental bench. Several one-factor-at-a-time experiments, followed by two factorial designs (one composite and the other fractional), were performed based on the following experimental procedure: (1) determination of the variation limits of the input variables; (2) identification of the set point and (3) robustness testing of the process, i.e. testing whether the performance of the system remains high even when the factors vary slightly around the set point.  相似文献

The statistical mechanics of particles at the surface of a dust deposit are presented as a step towards a microscopic theory of electrostatic precipitation. The paper consists of three major divisions: (1) field induced entrainment, (2) particle condensation at the surface, and (3) hydrodynamic limits on precipitation.In the first part of this paper, the entrainment of dust from surfaces by electrostatic forces was considered as a simple Markov process. A choice of x−1 for the dependence of the adhesive potential (van der Waals particle attraction) led to an exponential emission rate in the Kramers-Chandrasekhar approximation. This result suggested a simple experimental procedure for determining the adhesive properties of the dust. In addition it was found that both thermal Brownian and particle-deposit collisions contribute to the entrainment.In the second part, the precipitation problem was discussed in terms of a two-dimensional Ising model. The Markovian assumption demanded that the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator be divided into a product of factors depending on particle migration and condensation in the two-dimensional surface. From this perspective a new collection criterion was established and the importance of particle collisions at the surface of the deposit was demonstrated.Finally, in the third part the role of bulk fluid flows in particle condensation and migration was addressed. The superficial gas flow and secondary flow were found to introduce anisotropy into the Ising lattice and also to enhance the mean particle energy at the surface. The Navier Stokes Equation was numerically integrated for the case of a wire-plate type corona. Plots of the stream function and gas velocity profile were presented and these suggested the existence of a lower limit on the shear stress that acts on surface particles.  相似文献

A new automated version of the piezoelectric microbalance measures the mass concentration of airborne particles smaller than a preselected aerodynamic cutoff diameter. It is designed for near-real-time, unattended, round-the-clock measurements of nearly any aerosol environment inhabited by humans. The instrument uses an electrostatic precipitator to deposit particles with greater than 95% efficiency onto a piezoelectric quartz crystal sensor which is able to detect a deposit of 0.005 μg. The precipitator and sensor are nearly identical to those in the portable instrument reported previously. Measurements comparing within ± 15% with gravimetrically measured filter samples are documented for a wide variety of aerosols in the 50 μg/m3 to 5.5 mg/m3 range. The instrument measures particles from 10 μm down to 0.01 μm in diameter, including submicron combustion smokes and metallic fumes. The piezoelectric microbalance technique senses the mass concentration of the aerosol, rather than light scattering properties as is done by photometers and nephelometers. The piezobalance, with 1 L/min sample flow, is more sensitive than any other mass-sensing instrument, making it especially suited for low concentration indoor measurements, even below 50 μg/m3. An automatic piezobalance recently measured respirable aerosol mass concentrations in several offices. Each measurement was the average concentration during a 30-min period. The 24-h/day measurements continued for several days. Especially interesting is the diurnal pattern, both for offices with and without smokers. The effect of a single nearby smoker was clearly illustrated when the smoker was absent one day in the middle of a week. Normal daytime peak concentrations in that office reached 80–110 μg/m3 with a smoker present, but only 50–60 μg/m3 when the smoker was absent. Curious smokers who briefly stopped byt o see the instrument caused single half-hour averages to triple, to values as high as 294 μg/m3 in one office.  相似文献

Australian guidelines recommend that tailings materials from uranium (U) mining and milling be contained without any detrimental impact on the environment for at least 1000 years. Natural analogue sites are being investigated to determine if they can provide data on the rates of natural erosion processes which occur over these timescales, for input into predictive geomorphic computer models. This paper presents radionuclide, metal and stable lead (Pb) isotope data from sediment cores and surface soils in the vicinity of two mineralised areas in the Alligator Rivers Region.Surface scrapes from the natural Anomaly #2, south of the Ranger mineral lease, exhibit radiogenic 206Pb/207Pb and 208Pb/207Pb ratios, and elevated U and metal concentrations typical for a near surface U anomaly. In contrast, samples taken from the Koongarra mineral lease (KML) show radionuclide activity and metal concentrations similar to natural areas elsewhere in the Alligator Rivers Region and Pb isotope ratios are closer to present day average crustal ratios (PDAC), as the orebodies at KML are covered by surficial sand. A sediment core collected from Anbangbang Billabong, downstream of KML, exhibits small variations in Pb isotope ratios that indicate that approximately 1% of the upper sediments in the sediment core may be derived from material originating from the U anomaly at Koongarra.  相似文献

The combined toxicity of five insecticides (chlorpyrifos, avermectin, imidacloprid, λ-cyhalothrin, and phoxim), two herbicides (atrazine and butachlor) and a heavy metal (cadmium) has been examined with the earthworm acute toxicity test. Toxicological interactions of these chemicals in four, five, six, seven, and eight-component mixtures were studied using the combination-index (CI) equation method. In four-component and five-component mixtures, the synergistic effects predominated at lower effect levels, while the patterns of interactions found in six, seven, and eight-component mixtures displayed synergism. The λ-CY + IMI + BUT + ATR + CPF + PHO combination displayed the most strongly synergistic interaction, with CI values ranging from 0.09 to 0.15. The nature of the interaction changes with the effect level and the relevance of synergistic effects increase with the complexity of the mixture. The CI method was compared with the classical models of concentration addition (CA) and independent action (IA) and we found that the CI method could accurately predict the combined toxicity. The predicted synergism resulted from co-existence of the pesticides and the heavy metal especially at low effect levels may have important implications in risk assessment for the real terrestrial environment.  相似文献

BackgroundAssociations of ambient air pollutants with respiratory health are inconsistent.ObjectivesWe analyzed the associations of gestational and early life exposures to air pollutants with doctor-diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis, and pneumonia in children.MethodsWe selected 3358 preschool children who did not alter residences after birth from a cross-sectional study in 2011–2012 in Shanghai, China. Parents reported children's respiratory health history, home environment, and family lifestyle behaviors. We collected daily concentrations of sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10) during the child's total lifetime (2006–2012) for each district where the children lived. We analyzed the associations using logistic regression models.ResultsAfter adjusting for covariates and the other studied pollutants, we found that exposure to NO2 (increment of 20 μg/m3) during the first year of life was significantly associated with asthma [odds ratio (OR) = 1.77; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.29–2.43] and allergic rhinitis (OR = 1.67; 95% CI: 1.07–2.61). Exposure to NO2 during gestation, the first two and three years, and over total lifetimewas all consistently associated with increased odds of allergic rhinitis. Quartiles of NO2 concentration during different exposure periods showed a slight dose–response relationship with the studied diseases. These diseases had significant associations with pollutant mixtures that included NO2, but had no significant association with exposures to SO2 and PM10 individually or in mixtures.ConclusionsGestational and early life exposures to ambient NO2 are risk factors for childhood respiratory diseases.  相似文献

Cadmium and lead have been identified as very toxic metals, which are widely present in the environment due to natural and anthropogenic emissions. Many studies have shown that the food chain is the main pathway of cadmium and lead transfer from the environment to humans. It is well documented that many factors will affect their transfer through food chains. Previous investigations on heavy metals were mostly concentrated on one contaminant in isolation. However, in real environments, exposure to mixtures of metals is ubiquitous such that cadmium pollution is invariably being associated with lead and zinc, etc. This study focuses on the contamination and health effects of the metal mixtures. For this purpose, a dietary survey was taken for 3 groups in Nanning in October 2002. Samples of soils, plants (vegetables), urine and blood of humans were measured for Cd, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca and Pb, in addition, the urinary indicators of renal dysfunction Albumin (ALB), N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), Beta-2-microglobulin (beta2-MG) and Retinol-binding protein (RBP) in urine were also measured. Results showed that soil contamination with metal mixtures had caused significant renal dysfunction of the local residents living in the contaminated area, and the dose-response curve was somewhat altered by the mixed contamination of Cd and Pb as well as the intake of other minerals. The importance of mixtures of metal contamination and human health are also discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is currently supporting a major research program characterizing the performance of high efficiency electrostatic precipitators (ESP). One such effort evaluating the George Neal ESP of Iowa Public Service Company is described in this paper.Results show that under well tuned conditions the ESP overall collection efficiency was 99.7% at a specific collecting area of 745 ft2/kacfm (147 m2/m3/s) (520 MW) with associated mass concentrations of 0.025 lb/106 Btu and stack opacity of 4.6%. The boiler outlet size distribution was found to be bimodal with submicron and large particle peaks at 0.2 and 5 microns diameter, respectively. Consequently, an apparent bimodal fractional efficiency curve results with efficiencies of 99.6%, 98%, and 90% measured for 20, 2 and 0.2 micron diameter particles, respectively. Rapping reentrainment losses were found to be insignificant except during episodes of high ash hopper levels resulting from a malfunctioning ash removal system, when large rapping puffs were observed. In addition, outlet emissions increased dramatically to 0.08 lb/106 Btu (34 ng/J) during these periods, suggesting that an emission level more representative of daily operation lies somewhere between 0.025–0.08 lb/106 Btu (10.8–34 ng/J).  相似文献

Burning candles and incense generate particulate matter (PM) that produces poor indoor air quality and may cause human pulmonary problems. This study physically characterised combustion particles collected in a church during services. In addition, the emissions from five types of candles and two types of incense were investigated using a combustion chamber. The plasmid scission assay was used to determine the oxidative capacities of these church particles. The corresponding risk factor (CRf) was derived from the emission factor (Ef) and the oxidative DNA damage, and used to evaluate the relative respiratory exposure risks. Real-time PM measurements in the church during candle–incense burning services showed that the levels (91.6 μg/m3 for PM10; 38.9 μg/m3 for PM2.5) exceeded the European Union (EU) air quality guidelines. The combustion chamber testing, using the same environmental conditions, showed that the incense Ef for both PM10 (490.6–587.9 mg/g) and PM2.5 (290.1–417.2 mg/g) exceeded that of candles; particularly the PM2.5 emissions. These CRf results suggested that the exposure to significant amounts of incense PM could result in a higher risk of oxidative DNA adducts (27.4–32.8 times) than tobacco PM. The generation and subsequent inhalation of PM during church activities may therefore pose significant risks in terms of respiratory health effects.  相似文献

BackgroundEvidence on health effects of ultrafine particles (UFP) is still limited as they are usually not monitored routinely. The few epidemiological studies on UFP and (cause-specific) mortality so far have reported inconsistent results.ObjectivesThe main objective of the UFIREG project was to investigate the short-term associations between UFP and fine particulate matter (PM) < 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and daily (cause-specific) mortality in five European Cities. We also examined the effects of PM < 10 μm (PM10) and coarse particles (PM2.5–10).MethodsUFP (20–100 nm), PM and meteorological data were measured in Dresden and Augsburg (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Chernivtsi (Ukraine). Daily counts of natural and cardio-respiratory mortality were collected for all five cities. Depending on data availability, the following study periods were chosen: Augsburg and Dresden 2011–2012, Ljubljana and Prague 2012–2013, Chernivtsi 2013–March 2014. The associations between air pollutants and health outcomes were assessed using confounder-adjusted Poisson regression models examining single (lag 0–lag 5) and cumulative lags (lag 0–1, lag 2–5, and lag 0–5). City-specific estimates were pooled using meta-analyses methods.ResultsResults indicated a delayed and prolonged association between UFP and respiratory mortality (9.9% [95%-confidence interval: − 6.3%; 28.8%] increase in association with a 6-day average increase of 2750 particles/cm3 (average interquartile range across all cities)). Cardiovascular mortality increased by 3.0% [− 2.7%; 9.1%] and 4.1% [0.4%; 8.0%] in association with a 12.4 μg/m3 and 4.7 μg/m3 increase in the PM2.5- and PM2.5–10-averages of lag 2–5.ConclusionsWe observed positive but not statistically significant associations between prolonged exposures to UFP and respiratory mortality, which were independent of particle mass exposures. Further multi-centre studies are needed investigating several years to produce more precise estimates on health effects of UFP.  相似文献

Ventilation requirements in occupied spaces have traditionally derived largely from odor control. The requirements have rested on the notion that an environment that seems subjectively acceptable to a visitor will in fact be healthful and comfortable for both visitor and occupant alike. Ventilation requirements have derived secondarily from criterion concentrations of notable contaminants (e.g., carbon dioxide). The present investigation looked again at both sensory (odor, irritation) and physical criteria of acceptability, paying particular attention to the difference between smoking and nonsmoking occupancy in a well-controlled environmental chamber. More than 200 persons (visitors) made judgments of odor intensity and acceptability under various conditions of occupancy (up to 12 nonsmoking occupants; a temperature of up to 25.5°C; up to 16 cigarettes smoked per hour). The results implied that under nonsmoking conditions and moderate humidity only about 7.5 cfm (3.8 L sec−1) of fresh air per occupant sufficed to satisfy visitors, but that under smoking conditions at least 5 times as much fresh air is necessary. Our estimate of ventilation requirements for smoking were derived in part from measurements of carbon monoxide and total suspended particulate (TSP) mass concentration. Levels of TSP achieved during realistic smoking and ventilation rates exceeded levels deemed acceptable outdoors. Surfaces in the chamber played an important role in the elimination of particles, presumably via adsorption. Use of an electrostatic precipitator could keep TSP levels under control. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether control of TSP will eliminate the need for enormous ventilation for odor control during smoking occupancy.  相似文献

The flagellate, Euglena proxima, isolated from industrial wastewater showed tolerance against Cr6+ (20 μg/ml) and Pb2+ (30 μg/ml). The metal ions slowed down the growth of the organism after 4–5 days of exposure. The reduction in cell population was 68% for Cr6+ and 59% for Pb2+ after 8 days of metal stress. The order of resistance to heavy metals, in terms of reduction in the cellular population, was Pb2+ > Cr6+. Chromium and lead processing capabilities of Euglena proxima were worked out for its potential use as biore-mediator of wastewater. The reduction in the amount of Cr6+ after 7, 14 and 21 days of flagellate culturing containing 5 μg Cr6+/ml of culture medium was 76, 80 and 88%, respectively. Euglena proxima could also remove 78% Pb2+ after 7 days, 82% after 14 days and 90% after 21 days from the culture medium. The acid digestion of Euglena proxima showed 84% of Cr6+ and 88% of Pb2+ ions accumulated in the organism. The heavy metal uptake ability of Euglena proxima can be exploited for metal detoxification and environmental clean-up operations.  相似文献

Various biotic and abiotic stress factors affect the growth and productivity of crop plants. Particularly, the climatic and/or heavy metal stress influence various processes including growth, physiology, biochemistry, and yield of crops. Climatic changes particularly the elevated atmospheric CO2 enhance the biomass production and metal accumulation in plants and help plants to support greater microbial populations and/or protect the microorganisms against the impacts of heavy metals. Besides, the indirect effects of climatic change (e.g., changes in the function and structure of plant roots and diversity and activity of rhizosphere microbes) would lead to altered metal bioavailability in soils and concomitantly affect plant growth. However, the effects of warming, drought or combined climatic stress on plant growth and metal accumulation vary substantially across physico–chemico–biological properties of the environment (e.g., soil pH, heavy metal type and its bio-available concentrations, microbial diversity, and interactive effects of climatic factors) and plant used. Overall, direct and/or indirect effects of climate change on heavy metal mobility in soils may further hinder the ability of plants to adapt and make them more susceptible to stress. Here, we review and discuss how the climatic parameters including atmospheric CO2, temperature and drought influence the plant–metal interaction in polluted soils. Other aspects including the effects of climate change and heavy metals on plant–microbe interaction, heavy metal phytoremediation and safety of food and feed are also discussed. This review shows that predicting how plant–metal interaction responds to altering climatic change is critical to select suitable crop plants that would be able to produce more yields and tolerate multi-stress conditions without accumulating toxic heavy metals for future food security.  相似文献

Since 2011, the scientific community has worked to identify the exact transport and deposition patterns of radionuclides released from the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in Japan. Nevertheless, there still remain many unknowns concerning the health and environmental impacts of these radionuclides. The present paper reviews the current understanding of the FDNPP accident with respect to interactions of the released radionuclides with the environment and impacts on human and non-human biota. Here, we scrutinize existing literature and combine and interpret observations and modeling assessments derived after Fukushima. Finally, we discuss the behavior and applications of radionuclides that might be used as tracers of environmental processes. This review focuses on 137Cs and 131I releases derived from Fukushima. Published estimates suggest total release amounts of 12–36.7 PBq of 137Cs and 150–160 PBq of 131I. Maximum estimated human mortality due to the Fukushima nuclear accident is 10,000 (due to all causes) and the maximum estimates for lifetime cancer mortality and morbidity are 1500 and 1800, respectively. Studies of plants and animals in the forests of Fukushima have recorded a range of physiological, developmental, morphological, and behavioral consequences of exposure to radioactivity. Some of the effects observed in the exposed populations include the following: hematological aberrations in Fukushima monkeys; genetic, developmental and morphological aberrations in a butterfly; declines in abundances of birds, butterflies and cicadas; aberrant growth forms in trees; and morphological abnormalities in aphids. These findings are discussed from the perspective of conservation biology.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to generate a fast analytical method to determine the five phthalates benzylbutylphthalate (BBP), dibutylphthalate (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP), di-isodecylphthalate (DIDP), and di-isononylphthalate (DINP) in house dust. To achieve this liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS/MS) was used for measurement. The risk of lab- and cross-contamination was nearly eliminated completely as a very short and fast sample preparation including a sieving step and an ultrasonic extraction for the analytes from the dust samples was used. Quantification through internal standard calibration resulted in low limits of determination (DEHP 4 mg kg? 1 to DBP 14 mg kg? 1). A potential interaction between the analytes DIDP and DINP during chromatographic measurement could be excluded while performing a two level factorial design. Furthermore it was examined to what extend carpet and plastic materials respectively have influence on the total amount of phthalates in dust. It could be shown that apartments in which a minimum of both of these sources appeared revealed the lowest total amount of sum of phthalates in dust (median 362 mg kg? 1).  相似文献
