Experimental results obtained to date indicate electrokinetic extraction is viable in removing organic and inorganic contaminants
from fine-grained soils. However, electrochemical reactions and soil-contaminant interactions that occur simultaneously may
enhance or reduce the removal efficiency of the hazardous waste site remediation process. Many sites worldwide are contaminated
by lead and its compounds, resulting in lead poisoning. It is difficult to remove lead from fine-grained soil because of the
existence of a great variety of lead complexes and their pH-dependent and reversible physicochemical properties. The feasibility
of electrokinetic extraction of lead from kaolinites is investigated theoretically, numerically, and experimentally in this
study. This is the first paper of two companion papers presenting the theoretical and numerical modeling of the transport
of lead species, and electrochemical reactions and soil-contaminant interactions occurring during the electrokinetic extraction
process. The comparison between simulation results and experimental results is presented in the second paper. 相似文献

Soil is a complex natural resource that is considered non-renewable in policy frameworks, and it plays a key role in maintaining a variety of ecosystem services (ES) and life-sustaining material cycles within the Earth's Critical Zone (CZ). However, currently, the ability of soil to deliver these services is being drastically reduced in many locations, and global loss of soil ecosystem services is estimated to increase each year as a result of many different threats, such as erosion and soil carbon loss. The European Union Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection alerts policy makers of the need to protect soil and proposes measures to mitigate soil degradation. In this context, the European Commission-funded research project on Soil Transformations in European Catchments (SoilTrEC) aims to quantify the processes that deliver soil ecosystem services in the Earth's Critical Zone and to quantify the impacts of environmental change on key soil functions. This is achieved by integrating the research results into decision-support tools and applying methods of economic valuation to soil ecosystem services. The dissipation of 14C carbaryl in undisturbed soil cores, and of quinalphos (25EC and 20AF) after seed and soil treatments, was investigated under field use conditions, in a semi-arid groundnut field. Residues were analyzed by TLC and HPLC and additionally by LSC for 14C carbaryl. The harvested seed kernels were also tested for the presence of insecticide residues. The movement of carbaryl was limited to 15 cm depth in the loamy sand of Jaipur and was detected till 120 days (DT50 of 14.93 days) after application. Bound residues and 1-naphthol had a DT50 of 11.45 and 13.68 days, respectively. Irrespective of the three types of soil samples investigated, the principal metabolite formed on seed and soil treatments with quinalphos, was 2-hydroxyquinoxaline. With seed treatment, a thiol metabolite of quinalphos was also detected. Higher yields of groundnut were realized with quinalphos treatments in comparison to those from control. Post-harvest, no pesticide residues were found in seeds. 相似文献

A comprehensive study of the fouling organisms encountered at the New Mangalore Port at Panambur and the Fish Landing Jetty on the Nethravati-Gurpur estuary near the old Mangalore Port, India, was made. Barnacles, oysters, bryozoans, polychaetes and hydroids are the dominant groups of foulers encountered in this region. Barnacles are by far the most important foulers. Distinct seasonal abundance in settlement was noticed in the different groups. The major peak settlement of barnacles occurs in November and December. Continuous settlement of this group in the harbour indicates the presence of larvae throughout the year in the marine locality. The absence of freshly settled spat in the estuarine locality shows that these larvae do not foul structures in the Fish Landing Jetty during the monsson period. The pattern of oyster settlement indicates that the spat of Crassostrea madrasensis and c. cucullata settle during January, March, May and October in this region. This group remains in the fouling community throughout the year. Only typical marine bryozoans are harboured in abundance in the fouling community. Polychaetes occur in great numbers during April and December.The differences in the quality and quantity of the fouling communities are controlled by their breeding periodicity,seasonal fluctuations in the hydrographical conditions, and the species composition of the sedentary community of this region. 相似文献

Cure characteristics, Mooney viscosity and physico-mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR) containing CTAB modified kaolin have been studied. NR mix containing 6 phr (parts per hundred part rubber) of CTAB modified kaolin showed significant increases in cure rate and state of cure as compared to gum NR compound and a mix containing the same amount of unmodified kaolin. Lower Mooney viscosity of the NR mix containing CTAB modified kaolin suggested improved processability. Reinforcing effect of CTAB modified kaolin in NR was evident from higher chemical crosslink density index, tensile modulus, hardness, tensile strength and tear strength. Besides, the NR vulcanizate containing 6 phr of CTAB modified kaolin showed lower abrasion loss and heat build-up which could be beneficial for applications such as tire treads. 相似文献

Agroforestry systems are fundamental features of the rural landscape of the Indian state of Kerala. Yet these mixed species
systems are increasingly being replaced by monocultures. This paper explores how public policies on land tenure, agriculture,
forestry and tree growing on private lands have interacted with farmer preferences in shaping land use dynamics and agroforestry
practices. It argues that not only is there no specific policy for agroforestry in Kerala, but also that the existing sectoral
policies of land tenure, agriculture, and forestry contributed to promoting plantation crops, even among marginal farmers.
Forest policies, which impose restrictions on timber extraction from farmers’ fields under the garb of protecting natural
forests, have often acted as a disincentive to maintaining tree-based mixed production systems on farmlands. The paper argues
that public policies interact with farmers’ preferences in determining land use practices. 相似文献

This is the second paper of two companion papers presenting the results of laboratory bench-scale experimental studies on
electrokinetic extraction of lead from two different kaolinites. The theoretical formulation and numerical simulation of the
process are presented in the first paper. Two different kaolinites were used in the study: (1) Georgia kaolinite and (2) Milwhite
kaolinite. The lead spiked in Georgia kaolinite was highly mobilized and effectively extracted by the technique as the pH
in the soil was significantly lowered by the electrokinetic process. Milwhite kaolinite has a much higher acid/base buffer
capacity, and the required acidic environment could not be developed. As a result, removal of the lead spiked in Milwhite
kaolinite was minimal. Comparison between simulations and experimental results is also presented. Factors affecting the cleanup
efficiency of the process and potential enhancement techniques are also discussed. 相似文献
