Blooms of toxic cyanobacteria in Algerian reservoirs represent a potential health problem, mainly from drinking water that supplies the local population of Ain Zada (Bordj Bou Arreridj). The objective of this study is to monitor, detect, and identify the existence of cyanobacteria and microcystins during blooming times. Samples were taken in 2013 from eight stations. The results show that three potentially toxic cyanobacterial genera with the species Planktothrix agardhii were dominant. Cyanobacterial biomass, phycocyanin (PC) concentrations, and microcystin (MC) concentrations were high in the surface layer and at 14 m depth; these values were also high in the treated water. On 11 May 2013, MC concentrations were 6.3 μg/L in MC-LR equivalent in the drinking water. This study shows for the first time the presence of cyanotoxins in raw and treated waters, highlighting that regular monitoring of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins must be undertaken to avoid potential health problems.  相似文献

Simazine is a s-triazine herbicide that has been applied worldwide for agriculture. This herbicide is the second most commonly detected pesticide in surface and groundwater in the United States, Europe and Australia. In this study, simazine adsorption behaviour was studied in two agricultural soils of the Aconcagua valley, central Chile. The two studied soils were soil A (loam, 8.5% organic matter content) and soil B (clay-loam, 3.5% organic matter content). Three times higher simazine adsorption capacity was observed in soil A (68.03 mg kg−1) compared to soil B (22.03 mg kg−1). The simazine adsorption distribution coefficients (Kd) were 9.32 L kg−1 for soil A and 7.74 L kg−1 for soil B. The simazine adsorption enthalpy in soil A was −21.0 kJ mol−1 while in soil B the adsorption enthalpy value was −11.5 kJ mol−1. These results indicate that simazine adsorption process in these soils is exothermic, governing H bonds the adsorption process of simazine in both the loam and clay-loam soils. These results and the potentiometric profiles of both soils, suggest that simazine adsorption in soil A is mainly governed by simazine–organic matter interactions and in soil B by simazine–clay interactions. The understanding of simazine sorption–desorption processes is essential to determine the pesticide fate and availability in soil for pest control, biodegradation, runoff and leaching.  相似文献

Abstract: Returning confiscated animals to their native habitats is desirable when it makes a positive contribution to the conservation of the species. Release of captive individuals is complex and controversial, however, particularly when risks are potentially high, as in the case of orphaned apes. We describe the decision-making process that led to the successive release of 20 wild-born orphan chimpanzees (    Pan troglodytes troglodytes ) into the Conkouati Reserve in the Republic of Congo. Recommendations of the Reintroduction Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union's Species Survival Commission were followed closely. The conservation status, ecology, and behavior of wild chimpanzees; the biological, social, economic and political context of the release site; and the health and genetic status of the candidates for release were all taken into account in the planning and execution of the project. Rigorous post-release monitoring of behavior and health allowed documentation of the outcome. The project was of benefit to the chimpanzees that were released but also brought broad benefits to the site through effective protection from poaching and deforestation, and direct and indirect benefits to local people. The genetic and behavioral diversity of chimpanzees require a variety of conservation strategies to reduce threats and maintain as many viable wild populations as possible.  相似文献

Office employees spend a lot of time inside buildings, where the physical conditions influence their well-being and indirectly influence their employers' business performance. With data from a field study conducted in the Netherlands in April to May 2003, we used path analysis to further elucidate the relationship between personal (gender and seasonality of mood shifts), building (view type, view quality, window distance, and social density), and perceived environmental conditions (light quality, and office impression) and physical and psychological discomfort, sleep quality, and environmental utility. The results show that window views, which that are rated as being more attractive, are beneficial to building occupants by reducing discomfort. However, being close to a window and rating the lighting as being of lower quality can result in thermal and glare problems (environmental utility). Reduced discomfort at work can improve sleep quality, indicating that physical conditions at work influence home life.  相似文献

After reductions of fugitive and diffuse emissions by an industrial complex, a follow-up study was performed to determine the time variability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the lifetime cancer risk (LCR). Passive samplers (3 M monitors) were placed outdoors (n?=?179) and indoors (n?=?75) in industrial, urban, and control areas for 4 weeks. Twenty-five compounds including n-alkanes, cycloalkanes, aromatics, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and terpenes were determined by GC/MS. The results show a significant decrease of all VOCs, especially in the industrial area and to a lesser extent in the urban area. The median outdoor concentration of benzene in the industrial area declined compared to the former study, around 85 % and about 50 % in the urban area, which in the past was strongly influenced by industrial emissions. Other carcinogenic compounds like styrene and tetrachloroethylene were reduced to approximately 60 %. VOC concentrations in control areas remained nearly unchanged. According to the determined BTEX ratios and interspecies correlations, in contrast to the previous study, traffic was identified as the main emission source in the urban and control areas and showed an increased influence in the industrial area. The LCR, calculated for benzene, styrene, and tetrachloroethylene, shows a decrease of one order of magnitude in accordance to the decreased total VOC concentrations and is now acceptable according to values proposed by the World Health Organization.  相似文献

A fungal bioremediation method using P. frequentans removed up to 75% of phenanthrene with the addition of water and nutrients over a period of 30 d. During the bioremediation process, changes in metal behavior were monitored by an in situ technique (diffusive gradients in thin-films, DGT) and by soil solution chemistry. DGT provided absolute data on fluxes from the solid phase to the DGT device and relative trends of concentrations of the most labile metal species. DGT response indicated that bioremediation increases metal mobilization from the solid phase. Filtration provided data on the concentrations of solution phase (<0.45 microm) metal. In all case, metal fluxes and concentrations significantly increased after the bioremediation process began. Fluxes increased from <0.1 pg cm(-2)s(-1) before bioremediation to between 0.2 and 0.5 pg cm(-2)s(-1) after bioremediation. Metal concentrations in the soils solution (filtration at 0.45 microm) increased from 2 to 10 microg l(-1) (Cu), 1-4 microgl(-1) (Pb) and from 40 to 140 microg l(-1) (Ni) after bioremediation. Although over a short time period, these data strongly indicated that there was remobilization of metal from solid to solution (and thus to the DGT device) directly due to the bioremediation process. Although the mechanism was not unambiguously identified, it was shown not to be related to small changes in bulk pH over time and was attributed to the microbial action on the surface of the soil solid phase, releasing metal into solution. Additionally, differences in metal concentration and flux were observed in sterilized and non-sterilized soils and in the absence or presence of phenanthrene. The results indicated that the bioremediation of soil by P. frequentans increased the flux, lability and mobility of trace metal species and therefore the likely metal bioavailability to plants.  相似文献

Venlafaxine hydrochloride is a structurally novel antidepressant. Its occurrence in surface waters and drinking water has only been reported in recent works. The aim of this work is to assess the acute and chronic sublethal toxicity of venlafaxine in relevant taxa of riparian ecosystems. We used the fern Polystichum setiferum during the critical life stage of development. Reliable biomarkers of cell viability (mitochondrial activity), plant physiology (chlorophyll), and growth (DNA content) were assessed as sensitive endpoints of toxicity. About DNA quantification, our results show that venlafaxine induces acute lethal phytotoxicity at 24 and 48 h (LOECs 1 μg L?1 and 0.1 μg L?1, respectively). At 24 h, hormetic effects in spores of P. setiferum mitochondrial activity mask lethality and adverse effects are observed (LOEC 1 μg L?1). At 48 h a reduction in the mitochondrial activity happens (LOEC 10 μg L?1). In chronic exposure of 1 week, LOEC for DNA is 0.1 μg L?1. Mitochondrial activity showed a strong hormetic stimulation of a surviving spore population (LOEC 10 μg L?1). Changes were not observed in chlorophyll autofluorescence. Environmental concentrations of venlafaxine can be deleterious for the development of significant populations of sensitive individuals in riparian ecosystems.  相似文献
