Thirty-two Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in southern Sweden were studied for a period of 12 years to evaluate acidification-induced chemical changes in the soil. Soil, at 20-30 cm depth in the mineral layer, was sampled three times during this period (1988, 1993 and 1999). The results show that pH(BaCl2) in mineral soil decreased by, on average, 0.17 units between 1988 and 1999, accompanied by an increase in aluminium (Al) concentration and a decrease in base saturation in the soil. In 1999, the base saturation was below 5% in 58% of the 32 sites compared with 16% in 1988 and 7% in 1993. Concentrations of calcium (Ca), potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) are low and decreasing. Based on C/N ratios in humus, 45% of the sites may be subjected to leaching of considerable amounts of nitrate. The results show that the acidification of coniferous forest soils in southern Sweden is continuing, and that the negative effects on the nutrient status in soil are extensive. The results are compared with reference values for productive, long-term sustainably managed boreal coniferous or mixed forest soils and implications for long-term sustainability are discussed. 相似文献

An automatic recording apparatus for measuring the filtration rate in suspension-feeding bivalves is described. The concentration of algae in the experimental medium is kept constant throughout each experiment by addition of Phaeodactylum tricornutum from a chemostat. Within the range of body size 5.7 to 283 mg (W=dry weight of tissues), the filtration rate (F=ml min-1) at 15°C in Mytilus edulis L. follows the allometric equation F=0.85 W
0.72. Within the concentrations 0.18 to 0.70 mg algal dry weight l-1, the filtration rate in mussels of 132 mg dry flesh weight ranges from 33.1 to 41.0 ml min-1. The respiration and excretion rates of Calanus glacialis (Jaschnov) Copepodite Stages III, IV, V, and adult females from the drift-ice area east of Svalbard (Barents Sea) were measured in shipboard experiments during the period from 27 May to 13 June, 1983. The phytoplankton biomass and abundance varied considerably between localities, but these variations were not generally reflected in the respiration and excretion rates of the copepod. The respiration and excretion rates of C. glacialis at the ambient temperature of-1.8°C (average respiration rates of 0.95, 0.73, 0.57, and 0.60 l O2 mg-1 dry wt h-1 for Copepodite Stage III, IV, V, and adult females, respectively) were similar to those previously reported for other large-sized copepods from cold or temperate areas. Average respiration and excretion rates tended to decrease with incubation time or time after capture. Measurements on ten occasions within a period of 27 h after capture revealed excretion rates of ammonium ranging between 2.9 and 16.8 for C III, 3.7 and 21.1 for C IV, 1.3 and 28.4 for C V, and 1.6 and 18.7 for adult females, all expressed as nmol mg-1 dry wt h-1. In all experiments, excretion rates of inorganic phosphate varied between 0.7 and 1.5 (C III), 0.5 and 1.1 (C IV), 0.2 and 0.8 (C V), and 0.3 and 1.0 (adult females) nmol mg-1 dry wt h-1. Ratios of O:N, O:P, and N:P indicated that much of the metabolic energy was derived from catabolism of proteins. Comparison of the turnover rate of carbon and nitrogen showed, however, that nitrogen turnover was between 2.6 and 8.9 times higher than that of carbon. This may indicate that the copepods deaminate ingested protein, with the carbon skeleton of the amino acids subsequently being used in the synthesis of lipid compounds, possibly wax esters. 相似文献

Sweden is one of the countries affected by the Chernobyl fallout. The aim of the present study was to investigate the average radiation dose to people living in a high-deposition area (the parish of Hille) in Sweden for comparison with dose rates previously measured in a low-deposition area in western Sweden. Individual measurements (personal and dwelling dose rates) were performed using thermoluminescence dosimeters in 24 randomly chosen individuals. Dwelling and personal dose rates in Hille were 0.12 and 0.11 microSv/h, respectively. The dose rates in Hille were slightly higher than in western Sweden (difference for detached houses=0.024 microSv/h for personal and 0.030 microSv/h for dwelling dose rates), partly because of the higher (137)Cs deposition. In wooden houses, the difference was somewhat greater. Our results indicate a current contribution to personal gamma radiation in this area of about 0.2 mSv per year from the Chernobyl fallout. 相似文献

Traditional, pre-industrial farming was adapted to the natural environment—topography, geology, hydrology, climate, and biota. Traditional land use systems are still to be traced in Scandinavia as an “infield/outland landscape”, and in Japan as a “Satoyama landscape.” There are obvious similarities and differences in land use—the main difference being that pasturing of cattle and sheep has been less important in Japan. These land use systems can be traced back to early sedentary settlements 1500–2500 years ago. In both regions, traditional management almost ceased in the mid-twentieth century leading to afforestation and decreased biological diversity. Today, there is in Japan a growing movement for landscape restoration and promotion of a sustainable living countryside based on local agrarian and forestry production, local energy, tourism, etc. With this background, the so-called Satoyama Initiative has been organized and introduced as a global socio-ecological project with ecosystem services for human well-being. 相似文献

Alkylphenol (AP) metabolites were characterized in the bile of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) after exposure to nine individual compounds (10mg/kg fish), 2-methylphenol (2-MP), 4-methylphenol (4-MP), 3,5-dimethylphenol (3,5-DMP), 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (2,4,6-TMP), 4-tert-butylphenol (4-t-BP), 4-tert-butyl-2-methylphenol (4-t-B-2-MP), 4-n-pentylphenol (4-n-PP), 4-n-hexylphenol (4-n-HexP) and 4-n-heptylphenol (4-n-HepP), and a mixture (total dose; 13.5 mg/kg fish) of the nine APs by inter-muscular injection. The degree of alkylation ranged from methyl (C1) to heptyl (C7) and represents the types of APs present in produced water. Fish bile was collected on day 4 and 16 (exposure groups 2-MP, 3,5-DMP, 2,4,6-TMP and 4-t-B-2-MP) following exposure. Characterization of major metabolites was accomplished by enzymatic de-conjugation and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography connected to a fluorescence detector (HPLC-F) acquiring at ex/em 222/306 nm. Two solid phase extraction (SPE) columns were evaluated for clean-up of samples prior to analysis. Independent of alkyl homologue, the glucuronide conjugated APs were the most abundant metabolites (73-100%), whereas sulfates, glucosides and unchanged compounds were excreted in amounts of 0-21%, 0-6.1% and 0-6.3%, respectively. The total concentration of measured metabolites in the bile, determined as their respective APs after de-conjugation, increased with increasing degree of alkylation (3.2+/-2.6 microg/g bile for 2-MP and 571+/-81 microg/g bile for 4-n-HepP) after exposure to an equal dose of AP. Comparison of metabolite concentrations in bile sampled 4 and 16 days after exposure, showed that the levels of 2-MP, 2,4,6-TMP and 4-t-B-2-MP were reduced by 55%, 30% and 45%, respectively whereas 3,5-DMP increased by 25% (not significant). This study suggests that analysis of de-conjugated metabolites in fish bile can be used to monitor AP exposure to fish, due to the relatively high and persistent level of these compounds.
