We used microscopy, reflectance spectroscopy, pigment analysis, and photosynthesis-irradiance curves measured with variable
fluorescence techniques to characterise the endolithic communities of phototrophic microorganisms in the skeleton of three
massive corals from a shallow reef flat. Microscopic observations and reflectance spectra showed the presence of up to four
distinct bands of photosynthetic microorganisms at different depths within the coral skeleton. Endolithic communities closer
to the coral surface exhibited higher photosynthetic electron transport rates and a green zone dominated by Ostreobium quekettii nearest the surface had the greatest chlorophyll pigment concentration. However, Ostreobium was also present and photosynthetically active in the colourless band between the coral tissue and the green band. The spectral
properties and pigment density of the endolithic bands were also found to closely correlate to photosynthetic rates as assessed
by fluorometry. All endolithic communities were extremely shade-adapted, and photosynthesis was saturated at irradiances <7 μmol

The European Union Water Framework Directive recognises the need for and value of biological monitoring. This paper reviews the modelling approach known as River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS
for assessing the ecological quality of river sites using macroinvertebrate sampling. The RIVPACS philosophy is to develop statistical relationships between the fauna and the environmental characteristics of a large set of high quality reference sites which can be used to predict the macroinvertebrate fauna to be expected at any site in the absence of pollution or other environmental stress. The observed fauna at new test sites can then be compared with their site-specific expected fauna to derive indices of ecological quality. All methodological decisions in any such model development have implications for the reliability, precision and robustness of any resulting indices for assessing the ecological quality and ecological grade (‘status’) of individual river stretches. The choice of reference sites and environmental predictor variables, the site classification and discrimination methods, the estimation of the expected fauna, and indices for comparing the agreement, or lack of it, between the observed and expected fauna, are all discussed. The indices are assessed on the reference sites and on a separate test set of 340 sites, which are subject to a wide range of types and degrees of impairment. 相似文献

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) on Guam previously attained incidence rates 50 to 100 times that of the continental United States and Europe and accounted for one in five deaths among Chamorros over age 25. A second neurological disorder in high incidence, parkinsonism-dementia (PD), and the early appearance in those populations of neurofibrillary tangles such as are seen in Alzheimer's disease and normal ageing have also been noted. Incidence and mortality rates of both diseases have declined dramatically during the past 30 years, and today, the risk of developing either disease among Guamanian Chamorros is only several times higher than in non-Guamanian populations. The decline is most likely a consequence of increased acculturation over the past three decades, with a concomitant decrease in isolation, changes in dietary habits and local water supplies, and much less dependence on locally grown foodstuffs. Similar declines are evident in the remaining two Pacific foci of high- incidence ALS, namely the Kii Peninsula focus in Japan and southern West New Guinea where western contact and introduction of new foodstuffs have occurred.The accumulating epidemiological, genetic and environmental evidence, as well as the development of new and promising experimental animal models, support the hypothesis that a basic metabolic defect, provoked by chronic nutritional deficiencies of calcium, lead to increased intestinal absorption of toxic metals and the co-deposition of calcium, aluminium and silicon in neurons of patients with ALS and PD. This elemental deposition is thought to result in aberrant microtubule assembly and/or abnormal post-translational modification of the amyloid precursor protein leading to widespread formation of neurofibrillary tangles, the hallmark pathological features in these disorders. The naturalistic paradigms of these foci in the Western Pacific have provided insights to understanding not only ALS and PD but other neurological disorders, such as classical ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and early neuronal ageing. 相似文献

The collapse of the world trade center (WTC) produced enhanced levels of airborne contaminants in New York City and nearby areas on September 11, 2001 through December, 2001. This catastrophic event revealed the vulnerability of the urban environment, and the inability of many existing air monitoring systems to operate efficiently in a crisis. The contaminants released circulated within the street canyons, but were also lifted above the urban canopy and transported over large distances, reflecting the fact that pollutant transport affects multiple scales, from single buildings through city blocks to mesoscales. In this study, ground-and space-based observations were combined with numerical weather forecast fields to initialize fine-scale numerical simulations. The effort is aimed at reconstructing pollutant dispersion from the WTC in New York City to surrounding areas, to provide means for eventually evaluating its effect on population and environment. Atmospheric dynamics were calculated with the multi-grid Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), covering scales from 250 m to 300 km and contaminant transport was studied using the Hybrid Particle and Concentration Transport (HYPACT) model that accepts RAMS meteorological output. The RAMS/HYPACT results were tested against PM2.5 observations from the roofs of public schools in New York City (NYC), Landsat images, and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) retrievals. Calculations accurately reproduced locations and timing of PM2.5 peak aerosol concentrations, as well as plume directionality. By comparing calculated and observed concentrations, the effective magnitude of the aerosol source was estimated. The simulated pollutant distributions are being used to characterize levels of human exposure and associated environmental health impacts. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: This paper uses the fundamental values of decision makers to guide a long-term wastewater planning process at Seattle Metro, a major utility district. Multiattribute value assessment is used to elicit the objectives of several elected officials and other key decision makers. The results are structured into a fundamental objectives hierarchy and a means-ends objectives network. A set of measures to indicate the performance of planning alternatives in terms of the fundamental objectives is developed. Preliminary value tradeoffs between objectives are elicited from several elected officials. The results of these steps are useful for many aspects of long-term planning: facilitating communication about values and priorities; designing attractive alternatives that are more likely to serve stakeholder interests; identifying information needed to evaluate alternatives; clarifying the relative importance of information about different impacts; providing a basis for quantitative evaluation of the alternatives with multiple objective analysis; and focusing attention on key tradeoffs that will affect the choice of alternatives. 相似文献

The pace and direction of electrostatic precipitator (ESP) technology evolution in the United States will be governed by two key forces. The first is new clean air legislation passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Bush on November 15,1990. This law requires electric utilities to further reduce SO2 and NOx emissions, which may impact particulate controls. In addition, very fine (< 10 micron) participates and potentially toxic trace emissions from utility power plants may be regulated. The second major factor is the expected upsurge in new plant construction beginning in the late 1990s. Together, these forces should define the performance requirements and market for new ESPs. This paper identifies and briefly describes technologies that the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is developing to help U.S. utilities meet these challenges cost-effectively. Among the technologies addressed are: advanced digital voltage controls, flue gas conditioning, intermittent energization, temperature-controlledprecharging (i.e., two-stage ESP), wide plate spacing, positive energization of corona electrodes for hot-side ESPs, and integration of conventional ESPs with pulse-jet baghouses. 相似文献

Abstract: Searching for indicator taxa representative of diverse assemblages, such as arthropods, is an important objective of many conservation studies. We evaluated the impacts of a wide gradient of disturbance in Gabon on a range of arthropod assemblages representing different feeding guilds. We examined 4 × 105 arthropod individuals from which 21 focal taxa were separated into 1534 morphospecies. Replication included the understory of 3 sites in each of 4 different stages of forest succession and land use (i.e., habitats) after logging (old and young forests, savanna, and gardens). We used 3 complementary sampling methods to survey sites throughout the year. Overall differences in arthropod abundance and diversity were greatest between forest and open habitats, and cleared forest invaded by savanna had the lowest abundance and diversity. The magnitude of faunal differences was much smaller between old and young forests. When considered at this local scale, anthropogenic modification of habitats did not result in a monotonous decline of diversity because many herbivore pests and their associated predators and parasitoids were abundant and diverse in gardens, where plant productivity was kept artificially high year‐round through watering and crop rotation. We used a variety of response variables to measure the strength of correlations across survey locations among focal taxa. These could be ranked as follows in terms of decreasing number of significant correlations: species turnover > abundance > observed species richness > estimated species richness > percentage of site‐specific species. The number of significant correlations was generally low and apparently unrelated to taxonomy or guild structure. Our results emphasize the value of reporting species turnover in conservation studies, as opposed to simply measuring species richness, and that the search for indicator taxa is elusive in the tropics. One promising alternative might be to consider “predictor sets” of a small number of taxa representative of different functional groups, as identified in our study. 相似文献

Plant transpiration is a critical process that affects the water balance in phytoremediation plots. The desired effect is to remove contaminated water from the soils through the plant metabolism. Thus, the transpiration rate can be a major component in modeling the groundwater flow and solute transport for a phytoremediation project and ultimately can determine the time expected to achieve remedial goals. Two phytoremediation plots of black willows (Salix nigra) were planted during October 1996 over separate,shallow groundwater plumes at a site in southeastern Louisiana. Concentrations of less than 10 mg/l of the herbicide bentazon were present in the shallow groundwater. Field experiments were developed and performed during the 1998 and 1999 growing seasons to measure sap flow as an indicator of plant transpiration. The tree‐trunk heat balance method was used to measure sap flow. Sap flow was indexed to the cross‐sectional area of the stem, and the sum of the available stem area for each plot was used to calculate the monthly water use in each plot. Daily water use in the plots averaged between 6 to 13 l/day/m2 during the periods tested in 1998 and 1999. By applying growth‐rate observations with the daily water use, annual water use at tree plot maturity was estimated to be 3.6×106 l/year in Plot 1 and 11.39×106 l/year in Plot 2. Application of these data will allow groundwater modeling to be performed to measure the effectiveness of phytoremediation and to predict closure of remediation at the test site. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献
