New institutions are critically needed to improve the resilience of social–ecological systems globally. Watershed management offers an important model due to its ability to govern mixed-ownership landscapes through common property regimes, translating national goals into local action. Here, I assess the efficacy of state watershed management institutions in the Pacific Northwest, based on their ability to support local watershed groups. I use document analysis to describe and compare state institutions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California. Results indicate that state institutional efficiency and resilience are the key factors determining watershed group activity and stability. The primary drivers of institutional efficiency and resilience were institutional unification, robust funding portfolios, low agency conflict, and strong support for economic multiplier effects, creative partnerships, and scholarly research. My findings elucidate the critical role of institutional efficiency and resilience in governing dynamic and complex social–ecological systems, enabling the flexibility to address emergent transformations. 相似文献

There is a growing demand for alternatives to Sweden’s current dominant silvicultural system, driven by a desire to raise biomass production, meet environmental goals and mitigate climate change. However, moving towards diversified forest management that deviates from well established silvicultural practices carries many uncertainties and risks. Adaptive management is often suggested as an effective means of managing in the context of such complexities. Yet there has been scepticism over its appropriateness in cases characterised by large spatial extents, extended temporal scales and complex land ownership—characteristics typical of Swedish forestry. Drawing on published research, including a new paradigm for adaptive management, we indicate how common pitfalls can be avoided during implementation. We indicate the investment, infrastructure, and considerations necessary to benefit from adaptive management. In doing so, we show how this approach could offer a pragmatic operational model for managing the uncertainties, risks and obstacles associated with new silvicultural systems and the challenges facing Swedish forestry. 相似文献

Increasing concerns over rising intersexuality in the animal kingdom and the ability of certain chemicals to disrupt the endocrine system have demanded a better understanding of the costs associated with such conditions. Whilst intersexuality appears relatively widespread throughout gonochoristic crustaceans, i.e. those crustacean species with two separate sexes, the fitness costs have rarely been reported. Through comparable investigation of normal and intersex specimens of the highly abundant marine/estuarine amphipod Echinogammarus marinus (Leach) these fitness costs were determined. Measurements taken to assess fitness costs included fecundity, fertility and embryonic development, maturation period, and any morphological deformities that might result in reduced pairing success. Results from this study suggest that intersex E.
marinus suffer from reduced fecundity and fertility, and mature at a larger size than normal specimens. These fitness costs can also, to a certain extent, be related to the degree of intersexuality. It is suggested that the increased size and morphological abnormalities observed in intersexes may result in reduced pairing success. Investigations into intersex organisms, i.e. those organisms with known dysfunctional endocrine systems, and the costs associated with such conditions, should aid researchers in assessing effects at the population and community level.Communicated by J.P. Significant ecological, hydrologic, and geomorphic changes have occurred during the 20th century along many large floodplain rivers in the American Southwest. Native Populus forests have declined, while the exotic Eurasian shrub, Tamarix, has proliferated and now dominates most floodplain ecosystems. Photographs from late 19th and early 20th centuries illustrate wide river channels with largely bare in-channel landforms and shrubby higher channel margin floodplains. However, by the mid-20th century, floodplains supporting dense Tamarix stands had expanded, and river channels had narrowed. Along the lower Green River in eastern Utah, the causal mechanism of channel and floodplain changes remains ambiguous due to the confounding effects of climatically driven reductions in flood magnitude, river regulation by Flaming Gorge Dam, and Tamarix invasion. This study addressed whether Tamarix establishment and spread followed climate- or dam-induced reductions in annual peak flows or whether Tamarix was potentially a driver of floodplain changes. We aged 235 Tamarix and 57 Populus individuals, determined the hydrologic and geomorphic processes that controlled recruitment, identified the spatial relationships of germination sites within floodplain stratigraphic transects, and mapped woody riparian vegetation cohorts along three segments of the lower Green River. The oldest Tamarix established along several sampling reaches in 1938, and 1.50-2.25 m of alluvium has accreted above their germination surfaces. Nearly 90% of the Tamarix and Populus samples established during flood years that exceeded the 2.5-year recurrence interval. Recruitment was most common when large floods were followed by years with smaller peak flows. The majority of Tamarix establishment and Green River channel narrowing occurred long before river regulation by Flaming Gorge Dam. Tamarix initially colonized bare instream sand deposits (e.g., islands and bars), and most channel and floodplain changes followed the establishment of Tamarix. Our results suggest that Tamarix recruitment was triggered by large annual floods that were followed by years with lower peak flows, not by periods of low flow alone. Tamarix appears to have actively invaded floodplains, while Populus colonization has been limited. Thus, Tamarix invasion may have greatly influenced floodplain development and riparian vegetation composition along the lower Green River since the early 20th century. 相似文献

Facultatively solitary and eusocial species allow for direct tests of the benefits of group living. We used the facultatively
social sweat bee Megalopta genalis to test several benefits of group living. We surveyed natural nests modified for observation in the field weekly for 5 weeks
in 2003. First, we demonstrate that social and solitary nesting are alternative behaviors, rather than different points on
one developmental trajectory. Next, we show that solitary nests suffered significantly higher rates of nest failure than did
social nests. Nest failure apparently resulted from solitary foundress mortality and subsequent brood orphanage. Social nests
had significantly higher productivity, measured as new brood cells provisioned during the study, than did solitary nests.
After accounting for nest failures, per capita productivity did not change with group size. Our results support key predictions
of Assured Fitness Return models, suggesting such indirect fitness benefits favor eusocial nesting in M. genalis. We compared field collections of natural nests to our observation nest data to show that without accounting for nest failures,
M. genalis appear to suffer a per capita productivity decrease with increasing group size. Calculating per capita productivity from
collected nests without accounting for the differential probabilities of survival across group sizes leads to an overestimate

The present study describes the emergence pattern of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings (Caretta caretta) from a nesting beach in Kyparissia Bay (Greece). We try to establish the role played by hatchling biometry, nest relocation
and distance from nest to the sea on this emergence pattern. We surveyed a total of 32 nests, and found long emergence periods
(mean = 6.7 nights). The majority of emergences occurred at night, mainly between 0030 and 0100 hours, and in small groups.
Most of the hatchlings emerged from the nests the first night. We found no clear trend when we studied the effect of hatchling
biometry between successive emergence days. We also found that relocation of the nests did not significantly affect the emergence
pattern. However, we noted that in the relocated nests, hatchlings emerged in smaller groups. Emergence periods were inversely
related to distance from the sea. In short, factors such as climate conditions, relocation and nest distance to the sea appear
to have some effect on the emergence pattern. Therefore, they should be taken into account in both biological studies and
management plans for sea turtle nesting beaches. Our results suggest leaving an extended period between the first emergence
of hatchlings and the excavation of nests by researchers in future studies in the area. 相似文献

Solitary foragers can balance demands for food and safety by varying their relative use of foraging patches and their level of vigilance. Here, we investigate whether colonies of the ant, Formica perpilosa, can balance these demands by dividing labor among workers. We show that foragers collecting nectar in vegetation near their nest are smaller than are those collecting nectar at sites away from the nest. We then use performance tests to show that smaller workers are more likely to succumb to attack from conspecifics but feed on nectar more efficiently than larger workers, suggesting a size-related trade-off between risk susceptibility and harvesting ability. Because foragers that travel away from the nest are probably more likely to encounter ants from neighboring colonies, this trade-off could explain the benefits of dividing foraging labor among workers. In a laboratory experiment, we show that contact with aggressive workers results in an increase in the mean size of recruits to a foraging site: this increase was not the result of more large recruits, but rather because fewer smaller ants traveled to the site. These results suggest that workers particularly susceptible to risk avoid dangerous sites, and suggest that variation in worker size can allow colonies to exploit profitably both hazardous and resource-poor patches.Communicated by L. A single population of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis Linnaeus) occurs in the western North Atlantic from Florida to Newfoundland. Dolphins killed in a swordfish driftnet fishery
between 1989 and 1998 provided samples for the present study. These were combined with additional observations from carcasses
collected from stranding programs. Samples were examined from 74 female and 161 male short-beaked common dolphins. A highly
significant male bias in the sex ratio of both the bycatch and stranding samples suggests that sex-based habitat partitioning
or school segregation occurs in this population. Age was estimated from decalcified thin sections of teeth and testis and
ovarian samples were examined both macro- and microscopically. Analyses showed that reproduction was both seasonal and synchronized.
Females reached sexual maturation at approximately age eight; males matured at 9.5 years. Conception occurred during July
and August (mean day 24 July). Gestation was estimated to last just under a year, so most females gave birth during July and
August (mean day 15 July). Annual pregnancy rate was estimated to be between 25 and 33%. Males undergo a fivefold seasonal
increase in testes mass and a twofold increase in seminiferous tubule diameter. Peak sperm production potential was observed
in July. At the end of the breeding season testis size and activity decreased after August. Male dolphins in this population
are hypothesized to engage in some form of sperm competition. 相似文献

As part of a research programme on the transfer of several radionuclides along a pelagic trophic chain, two groups of 12 trout were kept for 8 weeks in water contaminated with 30 Bq ml(-1) of (54)Mn. In order to simulate chronic contamination and limit alterations in the physical and chemical characteristics of the medium, the water was renewed every 2 days. The kinetics of the accumulation and elimination of the radionuclide were monitored in one group of fish. The second group was used to study the contamination of the main organs and tissues at the end of the accumulation phase. The dynamics of contamination can be described by a bi-compartmental model, taking into account the fluctuations in the concentration of (54)Mn in the water, as well as the biological dilution resulting from the growth of the fish. The theoretical value of the steady-state concentration factor for zero growth is 13 (w.w.) and the radionuclide release is characterised by two biological half-lives of 6 and 97 days. At the end of the accumulation phase, the (54)Mn is preferentially fixed in the bone, gills, skin and brain. The data obtained at the end of the depuration phase allow one to classify the organs in two groups with different elimination kinetics. The first group consists of organs of penetration or transit, such as the skin, gills, kidneys, liver, primary and secondary gut and viscera, whereas the second group is made up of the receptor and storage organs and tissues such as the bone, head, fins and muscle. 相似文献
