Thalassicolla nucleata is a skeletonless, large spumellarian radiolarian (ca 3 mm diameter) occurring abundantly in the surface water of the Sargasso Sea. It has a complex cellular organization consisting of (1) a well-defined central capsule surrounded by a non-living capsular wall perforated by numerous cytoplasmic strands and (2) an extracapsulum containing a frothy layer of alveolate cytoplasm penetrated by numerous rhizopodia. Evidence is presented for physiological specialization complementing this structural compartmentalization. Acid acryl phosphatase activity (a digestive vacuole marker enzyme) is approximately 3 times greater in the extracapsulum compared to the intracapsulum; whereas, cytochrome oxidase (a respiratory marker enzyme) is approximately 1.5 times greater in the intracàpsulum compared to the extracapsulum. Furthermore, cytochemical and electron microscopic evidence indicates that the extracapsulum, containing large vacuoles and copious amounts of acid phosphatase reaction product, is a major site of catabolism; while the intracapsulum, containing the nucleus, numerous Golgi bodies, and a rich supply of mitochondria, is a substantial site of anabolism, lysosomal secretory activity, and food product storage. This marked level of cellular specialization in T. nucleata may enhance its biological efficiency and thus partially account for its abundance in oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

Summary Hatching asynchrony (HA) of masked boobies (Sula dactylatra) in the Galápagos Islands differs from that of its sympatric congener, the blue-footed booby (S. nebouxii), in association with differences in brood reduction systems. Masked booby nestlings are obligately siblicidal, have long HA, and the probability and timing of siblicide is strongly influenced by HA. Blue-footed boobies are facultatively siblicidal and have shorter HA. Experimental shortening of masked booby HA demonstrated that this species maintians its HA above an early reduction threshold, below which parents may incur costs of provisioning a brood that they cannot raise to fledging, but that blue-footed booby HA occur above, at, and below the masked booby threshold. Differences in HA alone cannot explain the differences between these two brood reduction systems.  相似文献

A hemolytic method was developed for the quantitative determination of oleanane saponin (Endod-S) in Phytolacca dodecandra (Phytolaccaceae), a plant with potent molluscicidal properties. A chemical method based on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used as a control for comparison with a hemolysis test. Standard curves for calibration of both tests of Endod-S gave high correlation coefficients. The hemolysis method gave a correlation coefficient of 0.98 for saponin (Endod-S) levels ranging from 1.6 to 4.2 mg/l. The TLC method gave a correlation coefficient of 0.99 for saponin levels above 1.5 micrograms. Due to the action of saponins on erythrocytes, the hemolysis method could not be used at levels below 1.6 and above 4.2 mg/l. Similarly, sample size limited TLC quantitation of these saponins at levels below 1 microgram. Both the TLC and the hemolysis methods on identical Endod-S water samples gave comparable results at saponin levels between 2 and 6 mg/l. A snail bioassay showed that the LC50 and the LC90 concentrations of Endod-S to the snail Biomphalaria glabrata (albino) were 2.57 and 2.92 mg/l respectively. These values fell in the standard curve range for the hemolysis method thus indicating that the hemolysis method is of practical value for testing Endod-S concentrations that would actually be used in field applications for snail control. The hemolysis method is less expensive than TLC and can be easily adapted to field conditions.  相似文献

Made-up ground collected from layers of a trial pit excavated on a former industrial site was treated with artificial rainwater in a series of column leaching and sorption experiments. Metal mobility and the ability of various layers of material obtained from the pit to act as sources or sinks of potentially toxic elements were assessed. Samples from different layers varied in their abilities to raise the pH of rainwater applied at pH 3.5 and 4.3, and this was reflected in the amounts of metals mobilised by the rainwater as it percolated through the soil column. Material from the top two layers of the pit released cadmium, copper, manganese, lead, nickel and zinc to the aqueous phase, but the lower layers, with higher buffering capacity, were able to resist acidification even when the equivalent of 12 months' rainfall (western UK) was applied. Column sorption experiments confirmed the ability of material from layer 4 (48-50 cm) to take up copper, manganese and zinc. Metals were determined in the leachates by flame and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry and principle anions by ion chromatography.  相似文献

Water quality from forested landscapes tends to be very high but can deteriorate during and after silvicultural activities. Practices such as forest harvesting, site preparation, road construction/use, and stream crossings have been shown to contribute sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants to adjacent streams. Although advances in forest management accompanied with Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been very effective at reducing water quality impacts from forest operations, projected increases in demand for forest products may result in unintended environmental degradation. Through a review of the pertinent literature, we identified several research gaps related to water yield, aquatic habitat, sediment source and delivery, and BMP effectiveness that should be addressed for streams in the United States to better understand and address the environmental ramifications of current and future levels of timber production. We explored the current understanding of these topics based on relevant literature and the possible implications of increased demand for forest products in the United States.  相似文献

Riparian forests are important for the structure and functioning of stream ecosystems, providing structural components such as large woody debris (LWD). Changes in these forests will cause modifications in the LWD input to streams, affecting their structure. In order to assess the influence of riparian forests changes in LWD supply, 15 catchments (third and fourth order) with riparian forests at different conservation levels were selected for sampling. In each catchment we quantified the abundance, volume and diameter of LWD in stream channels; the number, area and volume of pools formed by LWD and basal area and tree diameter of riparian forest. We found that riparian forests were at a secondary successional stage with predominantly young trees (diameter at breast height <10 cm) in all studied streams. Results showed that basal area and diameter of riparian forest differed between the stream groups (forested and non-forested), but tree density did not differ between groups. Differences were also observed in LWD abundance, volume, frequency of LWD pools with subunits and area and volume of LWD pools. LWD diameter, LWD that form pools diameter and frequency of LWD pools without subunits did not differ between stream groups. Regression analyses showed that LWD abundance and volume, and frequency of LWD pools (with and without subunits) were positively related with the proportion of riparian forest. LWD diameter was not correlated to riparian tree diameter. The frequency of LWD pools was correlated to the abundance and volume of LWD, but characteristics of these pools (area and volume) were not correlated to the diameter of LWD that formed the pools. These results show that alterations in riparian forest cause modifications in the LWD abundance and volume in the stream channel, affecting mainly the structural complexity of these ecosystems (reduction in the number and structural characteristics of LWD pools). Our results also demonstrate that riparian forest conservation actions must consider not only its extension, but also successional stage to guarantee the quantity and quality of LWD necessary to enable the structuring of stream channels.  相似文献

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the potential effectiveness of an in-vehicle automatic collision notification (ACN) system in reducing all road crash fatalities in South Australia (SA).

Methods: For the years 2008 to 2009, traffic accident reporting system (TARS) data, emergency medical services (EMS) road crash dispatch data, and coroner's reports were matched and examined. This was done to initially determine the extent to which there were differences between the reported time of a fatal road crash in the mass crash data and the time EMS were notified and dispatched. In the subset of fatal crashes where there was a delay, injuries detailed by a forensic pathologist in individual coroner's reports were examined to determine the likelihood of survival had there not been a delay in emergency medical assistance.

Results: In 25% (N = 53) of fatalities in SA in the period 2008 to 2009, there was a delay in the notification of the crash event, and hence dispatch of EMS, that exceeded 10 min. In the 2-year crash period, 5 people were likely to have survived through more prompt crash notification enabling quicker emergency medical assistance. Additionally, 3 people potentially would have survived if surgical intervention (or emergency medical assistance to sustain life until surgery) occurred more promptly.

Conclusions: The minimum effectiveness rate of an ACN system in SA with full deployment is likely to be in the range of 2.4 to 3.8% of all road crash fatalities involving all vehicle types and all vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists) from 2008 to 2009. Considering only passenger vehicle occupants, the benefit is likely to be 2.6 to 4.6%. These fatality reductions could only have been achieved through earlier notification of each crash and their location to enable a quicker medical response. This might be achievable through a fully deployed in-vehicle ACN system.  相似文献

The effect of two major hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) metabolites, hexahydro-1-nitroso-3,5-dinitro-1,3,5-triazine (MNX) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitroso-1,3,5-triazine (TNX), on cricket (Acheta domesticus) survival and reproduction was studied. RDX metabolites did not have adverse effects on cricket survival, growth, and egg production. However, MNX and TNX did affect egg hatching. MNX and TNX were more toxic in spiked-sand than in topical tests. TNX was more toxic to egg than MNX. Developmental stage and exposure time affected hatching. After 30 days exposure to MNX or TNX, the EC20, EC50, and EC95 were 47, 128, and 247 microg/g for TNX, and 65, 140, and 253 microg/g for MNX in topical tests. The ECs for 20, 50, and 95 were 21, 52, and 99 microg/g for MNX, and 12, 48, and 97 microg/g for TNX in sand. No gross abnormalities in cricket nypmhs were observed in all experiments indicating that neither TNX or MNX is teratogenic in this assay.  相似文献
