A postural evaluation of commercial licensed truck drivers was conducted to determine the ergonomic benefits of a truck seat prototype in comparison with an industry standard seat. Twenty commercially licensed truck drivers were recruited to perform a 90-min driving task. Postures were assessed using accelerometers and a backrest and seat pan pressure mapping system. Subjective discomfort measurements were monitored using two questionnaires: ratings of perceived discomfort (RPD) and the automotive seating discomfort questionnaire (ASDQ). Participants reported significantly higher discomfort scores when sitting in the industry standard seat. Participants sat with more lumbar lordosis and assumed a more extended thoracic posture when seated in the prototype. Pairing the gluteal backrest panel with the adjustable seat pan also helped reduce the average sitting pressure on both the seat pan and the backrest. The prototype provided several postural benefits for commercially certified truck drivers, as it did for a young and healthy population. 相似文献
Environmental radionuclides can be employed as tracers of sediment movement and delivery to water bodies such as lakes and reservoirs. The chronologies of sediments that have accumulated in the Cordeaux reservoir in Sydney, Australia, were determined by the rate of change of (210)Pb(ex) with depth and indicate slow accretion in the reservoir. The ratio of enrichment of radionuclides in sediment cores to (210)Pb(ex) and (137)Cs concentrations in a reference soil sample within the Cordeaux catchment indicates that the dominant source of sediment in the Cordeaux reservoir is surface erosion (detachment and removal of sediment at depths less than 30 cm). However, in the Kembla Creek arm of the reservoir a mixture of sources was detected and includes sheet and rill erosion together with sub-soil contributions. Implications for the utility of these radionuclide sedimentation assessments, especially where samples are limited, are that well-constrained chronologies and sources of soil erosion are facilitated. 相似文献
Social structure, which is a function of the patterns of interactions among individuals, is particularly variable in fission–fusion
societies. The underlying factors that drive this variation are poorly understood. Female northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) live in fission–fusion societies where females form preferred associations within groups that vary daily in size and composition
as individuals switch roosts. The goal of our study was to test the predictions that preferred associations and social networks
of female northern long-eared bats vary with reproductive period and age. We also tested the prediction that preferred relationships
persist across years despite movements from summer roosts to winter hibernacula. Network analyses revealed that during gestation,
females roosted in smaller groups where they roosted more regularly with fewer individuals than during lactation. This variation
may reflect different social strategies to mediate higher energetic costs during lactation. Females of all ages roosted more
often with younger individuals, which in turn had more direct and indirect associations than all other age classes. Younger
individuals may play a role in maintaining connections between individuals, perhaps as a result of younger individuals being
more exploratory. Temporal analyses suggested that relationships can persist for years as some pairs roosted together for
multiple summers. We suggest that the dynamic nature of fission–fusion societies is associated with individual strategies
to increase fitness relative to individual characteristics, in this case reproductive condition and age. 相似文献
Globally, hepatitis A virus (HAV) is one of the most common agents of acute viral hepatitis and causes approximately 1.4 million cases and 90,000 deaths annually despite the existence of an effective vaccine. In 2019, federal, state, and local partners investigated a multi-state outbreak of HAV infections linked to fresh blackberries sourced from multiple suppliers in Michoacán, Mexico. A total of 20 individuals with outbreak-related HAV infection were reported in seven states, including 11 hospitalizations, and no deaths. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Nebraska State and Douglas County Health Departments conducted a traceback investigation for fresh blackberries reportedly purchased by 16 ill persons. These individuals reported purchasing fresh blackberries from 11 points of service from September 16 through 29, 2019 and their clinical isolates assessed through next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were genetically similar. The traceback investigation did not reveal convergence on a common grower or packing house within Mexico, but all of the blackberries were harvested from growers in Michoacán, Mexico. FDA did not detect the pathogen after analyzing fresh blackberry samples from four distributors, one consumer, and from nine importers at the port of entry as a result of increased screening. Challenges included gaps in traceability practices and the inability to recover the pathogen from sample testing, which prohibited investigators from determining the source of the implicated blackberries. This multi-state outbreak illustrated the importance of food safety practices for fresh produce that may contribute to foodborne illness outbreaks.
ABSTRACTIn the spring of 2018, a 10-day field study was conducted in Colorado’s Denver-Julesburg oil and natural gas production basin to improve information on well pad pneumatic controller (PC) populations and identify PCs with potential maintenance issues (MIs) causing excess emissions through a novel optical gas imaging (OGI) survey approach. A total of 500 natural gas-emitting PCs servicing 102 wells (4.9 PCs/well) were surveyed at 31 facilities operated by seven different companies. The PCs were characterized by their designed operational function and applications, with 83% of the PC population identified as intermittent PCs (IPCs). An OGI inspection protocol was used to investigate emissions on 447 working PCs from this set. OGI detected continuous emissions from 11.3% of observed IPCs and these were classified as experiencing some level of MIs. OGI imaging modes were observed to have a significant effect on emission detectability with high sensitivity mode detection rates being approximately 2 times higher compared to auto mode. Fourteen snapshot emission measurements (not including actuations) were conducted on IPCs in this category using a high-volume sampling device with augmented quality assurance procedures with observed emissions rates ranging from 0.1 up to 31.3 scf/hr (mean = 2.8 scf/hr). For PCs with continuous depressurization type (CPC), 36.8% had continuous emissions observed by OGI. Four supporting emission measurements were conducted on CPCs with one unit exceeding the low bleed regulatory emission threshold with an emission rate of 9.9 scf/hr (mean = 4.2 scf/hr). Additional information was collected on PC actuation events, as observed with OGI, which showed a strong correlation between observed actuation events and facility production compared to observed continuous emissions caused by MIs which did not correlate with facility production.Implications: A novel survey approach of pneumatic controllers at oil and natural gas production facilities in the Denver-Julesburg basin, using optical gas imaging and supporting emission measurements, was demonstrated as an effective method to identify controllers with potential maintenance issues causing excess emissions. The results of the pneumatic controller and optical gas imaging surveys improved information on pneumatic controller populations within the basin and also demonstrated the significant effect optical gas imaging modes have on emission detections. 相似文献
In this study, an ecofriendly and economically viable waste management approach have been attempted towards the biosynthesis of agriculturally important nanoparticles from jarosite waste. Aspergillus terreus strain J4 isolated from jarosite(waste from Debari Zinc Smelter,Udaipur, India), showed good leaching efficiency along with nanoparticles(NPs) formation under ambient conditions. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) confirmed the formation of NPs. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX analysis) showed strong signals for zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium,with these materials being leached out. TEM analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) showed semi-quasi spherical particles having average size of 10‐50 nm. Thus, a novel biomethodology was developed using fungal cell-free extract for bioleaching and subsequently nanoconversion of the waste materials into nanostructured form. These biosynthesized nanoparticles were tested for their efficacy on seed emergence activity of wheat(Triticum aestivum) seeds and showed enhanced growth at concentration of 20 ppm. As part of a large-scale monitoring program of bioaccumulating contaminants in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in Flanders (Belgium), we investigated potential effects of xenoestrogens in these fish. The present paper describes the results of the plasma vitellogenin (VTG) content, measured in 142 eels sampled at 20 different locations, in relation to the internal pollution levels. To validate the blood VTG assays, a small number of eels (n=8) was exposed to 10 microg ethinylestradiol/l (EE2) for 9 days. In this experiment, VTG was detected as a protein with a molecular weight of 214 kDa and confirmed by Western blotting. Compared with the solvent controls, significantly higher concentrations of VTG were measured in EE2 exposed eel. However, the VTG content was relatively low compared with other fish species exposed to high concentrations of estrogens. The plasma VTG content of eels from the field study was very low, despite a very high internal load of endocrine disrupters. These results, together with previously published studies, suggest that immature yellow European eel might not be the best sentinel species to study the effects of estrogenic compounds on VTG levels of wild fish populations. 相似文献
