With the decline of wildlife due to, among other things, agricultural intensification, gardening for wildlife has an increasingly recognized role in the conservation of biodiversity and habitats. The United Kingdom (UK) Wildlife Trusts have a key role in the promotion of awareness and best practice of wildlife gardening. In spring 2001, a survey of all 46 United Kingdom County Wildlife Trusts was carried out, focussing on their level of awareness of the issue, whether they actively promoted it, and what literature they employ, and whether they form partnerships in implementing this project.The survey achieved an 83 percent reply rate. The Trusts carried out a wide variety of promotional activities, although its importance as an issue varied from Trust to Trust. Some Trusts have developed excellent promotional literature and strategies, but there could be a greater degree of sharing of ideas and cross fertilization to avoid reinventing the wheel. A 12-year record of water quality data for runoff from a spruce forested hillslope with podzolic soils shows the impacts of conifer harvesting and replanting in relation to nitrate generation and its influence on surface water acidification. With felling, nitrate increases from a background of 18 Eq/l to about 50 Eq/l after 1 to 2 years and then declines to background levels over the next 1 to 2 years and to lower concentrations thereafter. This change is mirrored by an acidification process as manifest by a change in Gran alkalinity, acid neutralization capacity (ANC) and aluminium concentrations as well as pH. For example, Gran alkalinity and ANC, which start at negative concentrations prior to felling (about –20 and –50 Eq/l, respectively), become more negative (–30 and –100 Eq/l, respectively) at high nitrate concentrations. Correspondingly, pH decreases from about 4.7 to 4.5 and aluminium concentrations increase from about 14 to 16 M. Subsequently, the acidification is reversed as nitrate concentrations decline and after five years post-felling the system has higher pH, Gran alkalinity and ANC together with lower aluminium concentrations than even before the felling took place (the post-felling values are about 4.9, -15 Eq/l, –20 Eq/l and 7 M/l, respectively).Other determinands show clear changes over time. For example, there is a marked increase in sodium and chloride prior to and around the time of felling (200 to 300 and 230 to 400 Eq/l, respectively), with a subsequent decline in concentration to pre-felling and to lower values of around 160 and 170 Eq/l, respectively, thereafter. This change is probably associated with abnormally high inputs of sea-salts from the atmosphere during the first quarter of the year of felling, and dilution thereafter, rather than a direct consequence of the felling activity itself: this change in sea salt loading has had an impact on stream acidity. Dissolved organic carbon and iron also change with concentrations increasing over time (60 to 200 and 1.0 to 1.5 M/l, respectively) and this mirrors a general pattern observed across the Plynlimon catchments irrespective of whether or not there has been felling activity.The implications of the findings are discussed in relations to environmental management and hydrochemical processes. 相似文献
Factors influencing soil profile nitrogen storage (SPNS) in GB have been investigated. The SPNS values of moorland peats and podzols in the South Pennines, of permanent grassland in Yorkshire, and of adjacent arable-, semi-permanent grassland- and ancient woodland-soils in Worcestershire have been compared to assess land use effects. The soils exhibited similar SPNS values, because changes in bulk density and organic matter composition offset increases in N concentrations in highly organic soils. Data from the Soil Survey of Scotland were used to show effects of soil parent material on SPNS were also small. Data on Scottish podzol soils under heather moorland and derived from sandstone or quartzite were used to show that SPNS declined with increasing precipitation, but increased with the amount of pollutant N deposited from the atmosphere. 相似文献
The southeastern United States has experienced severe, recurrent drought, rapid human population growth, and increasing agricultural
irrigation during recent decades, resulting in greater demand for the water resources. During the same time period, freshwater
mussels (Unioniformes) in the region have experienced substantial population declines. Consequently, there is growing interest in determining how
mussel population declines are related to activities associated with water resource development. Determining the causes of
mussel population declines requires, in part, an understanding of the factors influencing mussel population dynamics. We developed
Pradel reverse-time, tag-recapture models to estimate survival, recruitment, and population growth rates for three federally
endangered mussel species in the Apalachicola–Chattahoochee–Flint River Basin, Georgia. The models were parameterized using
mussel tag-recapture data collected over five consecutive years from Sawhatchee Creek, located in southwestern Georgia. Model
estimates indicated that mussel survival was strongly and negatively related to high flows during the summer, whereas recruitment
was strongly and positively related to flows during the spring and summer. Using these models, we simulated mussel population
dynamics under historic (1940–1969) and current (1980–2008) flow regimes and under increasing levels of water use to evaluate
the relative effectiveness of alternative minimum flow regulations. The simulations indicated that the probability of simulated
mussel population extinction was at least 8 times greater under current hydrologic regimes. In addition, simulations of mussel
extinction under varying levels of water use indicated that the relative risk of extinction increased with increased water
use across a range of minimum flow regulations. The simulation results also indicated that our estimates of the effects of
water use on mussel extinction were influenced by the assumptions about the dynamics of the system, highlighting the need
for further study of mussel population dynamics. 相似文献
Environmental monitoring is essential for assessing the current state of the environment, measuring impacts of environmental pressures and providing evidence to government. Recent UK government announcements have indicated an increased role for 'Big Society' in monitoring. In this paper, we review available literature concerning the use of citizen science for monitoring, present examples of successful volunteer monitoring work and highlight important issues surrounding the use of volunteers. We argue that in order to ensure that environmental monitoring continues to be effective it is important to learn from examples where volunteers are currently used, acknowledging constraints and identifying potential approaches which will help to maximise both their engagement and data quality. Effective partnerships between environmental monitoring organisations and volunteers may thus aid the UK in developing robust coordinated monitoring systems that will be less vulnerable to funding variances. 相似文献
Globally, hepatitis A virus (HAV) is one of the most common agents of acute viral hepatitis and causes approximately 1.4 million cases and 90,000 deaths annually despite the existence of an effective vaccine. In 2019, federal, state, and local partners investigated a multi-state outbreak of HAV infections linked to fresh blackberries sourced from multiple suppliers in Michoacán, Mexico. A total of 20 individuals with outbreak-related HAV infection were reported in seven states, including 11 hospitalizations, and no deaths. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Nebraska State and Douglas County Health Departments conducted a traceback investigation for fresh blackberries reportedly purchased by 16 ill persons. These individuals reported purchasing fresh blackberries from 11 points of service from September 16 through 29, 2019 and their clinical isolates assessed through next-generation sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were genetically similar. The traceback investigation did not reveal convergence on a common grower or packing house within Mexico, but all of the blackberries were harvested from growers in Michoacán, Mexico. FDA did not detect the pathogen after analyzing fresh blackberry samples from four distributors, one consumer, and from nine importers at the port of entry as a result of increased screening. Challenges included gaps in traceability practices and the inability to recover the pathogen from sample testing, which prohibited investigators from determining the source of the implicated blackberries. This multi-state outbreak illustrated the importance of food safety practices for fresh produce that may contribute to foodborne illness outbreaks.
