In situ ammonia removal in bioreactor landfill leachate   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Although bioreactor landfills have many advantages associated with them, challenges remain, including the persistence of NH(3)-N in the leachate. Because NH(3)-N is both persistent and toxic, it will likely influence when the landfill is biologically stable and when post-closure monitoring may end. An in situ nitrogen removal technique would be advantageous. Recent studies have shown the efficacy of such processes; however, they are lacking the data required to enable adequate implementation at field-scale bioreactor landfills. Research was conducted to evaluate the kinetics of in situ ammonia removal in both acclimated and unacclimated wastes to aid in developing guidance for field-scale implementation. Results demonstrate that in situ nitrification is feasible in an aerated solid waste environment and that the potential for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (even under low biodegradable C:N conditions) in field-scale bioreactor landfills is significant due to the presence of both aerobic and anoxic areas. All rate data fit well to Monod kinetics, with specific rates of removal of 0.196 and 0.117 mgN/day-g dry waste and half-saturation constants of 59.6 and 147 mgN/L for acclimated and unacclimated wastes, respectively. Although specific rates of ammonia removal in the unacclimated waste are lower than in the acclimated waste, a relatively quick start-up of ammonia removal was observed in the unacclimated waste. Using the removal rate expressions developed will allow for estimation of the treatment times and volumes necessary to remove NH(3)-N from recirculated landfill leachate.  相似文献

Two-photon resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) has been shown to be a unique ionization method for mass spectrometry, exhibiting both high sensitivity and chemical selectivity. Because REMPI is a gas-phase method, its applications have been limited either to direct analysis of vapor phase samples, or in conjunction with an initial laser desorption or other vaporization step. We describe here for the first time a combination of membrane introduction mass spectrometry (MIMS) and REMPI with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS), which allows for the direct analysis of trace amounts of organic compounds in water samples. The objective of our research was the detection of very low levels of aromatic contaminants, particularly benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), in aqueous solutions without interference due to the water. We have measured limits of detection (LOD) for selected aromatics in water below 1 part-per-trillion with an averaging time of less than 10 s using a continuous sample flow.  相似文献

Landfill gas collection data from wet landfill cells were analyzed and first-order gas generation model parameters were estimated for the US EPA landfill gas emissions model (LandGEM). Parameters were determined through statistical comparison of predicted and actual gas collection. The US EPA LandGEM model appeared to fit the data well, provided it is preceded by a lag phase, which on average was 1.5 years. The first-order reaction rate constant, k, and the methane generation potential, L(o), were estimated for a set of landfills with short-term waste placement and long-term gas collection data. Mean and 95% confidence parameter estimates for these data sets were found using mixed-effects model regression followed by bootstrap analysis. The mean values for the specific methane volume produced during the lag phase (V(sto)), L(o), and k were 33 m(3)/Megagrams (Mg), 76 m(3)/Mg, and 0.28 year(-1), respectively. Parameters were also estimated for three full scale wet landfills where waste was placed over many years. The k and L(o) estimated for these landfills were 0.21 year(-1), 115 m(3)/Mg, 0.11 year(-1), 95 m(3)/Mg, and 0.12 year(-1) and 87 m(3)/Mg, respectively. A group of data points from wet landfills cells with short-term data were also analyzed. A conservative set of parameter estimates was suggested based on the upper 95% confidence interval parameters as a k of 0.3 year(-1) and a L(o) of 100 m(3)/Mg if design is optimized and the lag is minimized.  相似文献

Five streams were studied on the Northern Appalachian Plateau of Pennsylvania from October 1988 through June 1989 to determine chemical changes that occur during episodic storm run-off and the responses of fish to these events. These second-order streams flowed through undisturbed, wooded, sandstone bedrock catchments with surface areas ranging from 500 to 1000 hectares. Median pH of precipitations was about 4.2, and among streams it ranged from 5.0 to 6.2. During storm events, pH declined by as much as 1.2 units and peak concentrations of total monomeric Al ranged from < 0.01 to 0.75 mg litre(-1). Organically bound A1 was generally a minor component of total monomeric A1. Wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were found in all streams, although only a remnant population existed in the most acidic stream. Sculpins (Cottus bairdi or C. cognatus) were collected only in the two streams with the least severe episodes. Mortality of brook trout and sculpins in in situ bioassays ranged from 0 to about 80% among streams during acidic episodes and was positively related to concentrations of total dissolved Al. Radio-tagged brook trout moved downstream during episodes when Al reached toxic concentrations. Some displaced trout were found near groundwater seeps, where pH was higher and dissolved Al was lower than in the main channel.  相似文献

Concentrations of the heavy metals cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, mercury and, in some individuals, methyl mercury were determined in a range of tissues of 64 tropical, subtropical, subantarctic and antarctic seabird taxa mostly from the New Zealand region. Although apparently natural, levels of cadmium and mercury in some species greatly exceed those known to have toxic effects in some terrestrial birds. Copper and zinc levels exhibited less inter-species variation than the non-essential metals cadmium and mercury. Cadmium concentrations were highest in kidney tissues but uniformly low in feathers. Total mercury concentrations showed most inter-species variation. Mean methyl mercury levels in liver tissues of several large procellariiforms represented less than 5% of the corresponding mean total mercury level. Lead concentrations were generally low or below the limits of detection, but elevated levels were measured in some coastal or scavenging species. In a significant number of species, mean concentrations of liver cadmium and mercury and kidney cadmium were greater in adults than in young birds. The reverse was true for copper. Mean zinc levels in liver did not differ between adults and young. High levels of cadmium in some species seem likely to be due to diet, whereas high levels of mercury probably reflect more closely the moult intervals which constrain the ability of birds to eliminate methyl mercury.  相似文献

Oil spills caused by maritime transport of petroleum products are still an important source of ocean pollution, especially in main production areas and along major transport routes. We here provide a historical and geographic analysis of the major oil spills (>700 t) since 1960. Spills were recorded from several key marine ecosystems and marine biodiversity hotspots. The past four decades have been characterized by an overall decrease in the number of accidents and tonnes of oil spilled in the sea, but this trend was less distinct in the European Atlantic area. Recent black tides from the Erika and Prestige vessels provided new evidence for the high risk of accidents with serious ecological impact in this area, which according to our analysis is historically the most important oil spill hotspot worldwide. The English Channel and waters around Galicia in Spain were the areas with most accidents. Maritime transport in European Atlantic waters has been predicted to continue increasing. Together with our own results this suggests that, in addition to measures for increased traffic safety, deployment of emergency capacities in the spill hotspot areas may be crucial for a sustainable conservation of sea resources and ecosystems.Electronic Supplementary Material  Supplementary material is available for this article if you access the article at . Little is currently known regarding the toxicokinetics of TNT in fish. In the present study, the bioconcentration and distribution of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and TNT biotransformation products was investigated in juvenile channel catfish by exposing catfish to 14C-labeled TNT in water. Uptake experiments showed relatively fast rates (k(u)=10.1 ml g(-1) h(-1)) for TNT from the water; however, bioconcentration factors for TNT were low (0.79 ml g(-1)) due to rapid biotransformation and potential elimination of TNT. Accumulation of extractable radioactivity (TNT and all extractable biotransformation products) was much greater (BCF=10.5 ml g(-1)) than that for parent compound. TNT (parent compound) bioconcentrated to the greatest extent in the gills of the fish, while total radioactivity bioconcentrated to the greatest extent in the viscera. Residual portions of the fish that contained muscle and skin had lower concentrations of TNT than the whole fish, indicating that ingestion of fish fillets would result in decreased exposure to human consumers. Although the bioconcentration potential of TNT is very low, future research needs to be conducted to identify the biotransformation products that make up most of the radioactivity in exposed fish and evaluate their potential to promote toxicity.  相似文献

The Coordinating Research Council (CRC) held its 12th workshop in April 2002, with nearly 90 presentations on the most recent on-road vehicle emissions research. This paper summarizes the presentations from researchers who are engaged in improving understanding of the contribution of mobile sources to air quality. Participants in the workshop discussed mobile source emission models and emission inventories, results from gas- and particle-phase emissions studies from spark-ignition and diesel-powered vehicles (with an emphasis in this workshop on particle emissions), effects of fuels on emissions, evaluation of in-use emissions control programs, and efforts to improve our capabilities in performing on-board emissions measurements, as well as topics for future research.  相似文献

Metals have been reported to inhibit organic pollutant biodegradation; however, widely varying degrees and patterns of inhibition have been reported. To investigate the roles of medium composition and metal bioavailability on these different degrees and patterns of inhibition, we assessed the impact of cadmium on naphthalene biodegradation by a newly isolated strain of Comamonas testosteroni in three chemically-defined minimal salts media (MSM): Tris-buffered MSM, PIPES-buffered MSM, and Bushnell-Haas medium. Cadmium (total concentrations of 100 and 500 microM) inhibited biodegradation in each medium. Degrees of inhibition were different in each medium. Cadmium was most inhibitory in PIPES-buffered MSM and least inhibitory in Bushnell-Haas. For example, in Bushnell-Haas medium, 100 microM cadmium reduced the cell yield more than 4-fold compared to controls not containing cadmium. The same concentration of cadmium completely inhibited growth in PIPES-buffered MSM. No difference in inhibition was observed in any medium when cadmium was added 24 h before inoculation rather than when added within one minute of inoculation. Two patterns of inhibition were observed. Inhibition occurred in a dose dependent pattern in Tris- and PIPES-buffered MSM and in a non-dose dependent pattern in Bushnell-Haas. Specifically, in Bushnell-Haas, 100 microM total cadmium extended the lag phase by 23+/-8.66 h, whereas 500 microM did not extend the lag phase. Soluble, ionic cadmium (Cd2+) concentrations were measured and modeled in each medium to assess cadmium bioavailability. In media containing 500 microM total cadmium, bioavailability was highest in Tris- and PIPES-buffered MSM and lowest in Bushnell-Haas. In Bushnell-Haas, cadmium bioavailability was initially higher in the 500 microM treatments (196+/-21.2 microM) than in the 100 microM treatments (78.2+/-2.04 microM); however, after 12 h, bioavailability was higher in the 100 microM treatments (56.4+/-24.8 micro) than the 500 microM treatments (13.3+/-1.2 microM). These data suggest that the type of medium determines the degrees and patterns by which metals inhibit biodegradation and emphasize the importance of coupling metal toxicity and bioavailability data.  相似文献

Research was conducted on nitrogen (N) surface run-off losses following organic manure applications to land, utilising a purpose-built facility on a sloping site in Herefordshire under arable tillage. Different rates and timing of cattle slurry, farmyard manure and inorganic N and phosphorus (P) fertiliser were compared, over a 4-year period (1993-97). P losses from the same studies are reported in a separate paper. The application of cattle slurries to the silty clay loam soil increased the loss of solids and NH4(+)-N in surface water flow compared to control plots receiving inorganic fertiliser only, or no treatment, but had little effect on NO3(-)-N losses by this route. Results were consistent with other observations that rainfall events immediately after manure applications are particularly likely to be associated with nutrient run-off losses. Losses via subsurface flow (30 cm interflow) were consistently much lower than via surface water movement and were generally unaffected by treatment. Increasing slurry application rate and, in particular, slurry solids loading, increased solids and NH4(-)-N losses via surface run-off. The threshold, above which the risk of losses via surface run-off appeared to be greatly increased, was ca. 2.5-3.0 t/ha slurry solids, which approximates to the 50 m3/ha limit suggested for slurry within UK 'good agricultural practice'. Sealing of the soil surface by slurry solids appears to be a possible mechanism by which polluting surface run-off may occur following slurry application on susceptible soils. Total losses of NH4(+)-N and NO3(-)-N during the 4-year monitoring period were insignificant in agronomic terms, but average soluble N concentrations (NH4(+)-N + NO3(-)-N) in run-off, ranging from ca. 2.0 mg/l, up to 14.0 mg/l for the higher rate slurry treatments. Peak concentrations of NH4(+)-N > 30 mg/l, are such as to be of concern in sensitive catchments, in terms of the potential for contribution to accelerated eutrophication and adverse effects on freshwater biota.  相似文献
