Bacterial community structure was examined in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminated soil taken from a timber treatment facility in southern Ireland. Profiles of soil bacterial communities were generated using a molecular fingerprinting technique, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP), and results were interpreted using sophisticated multivariate statistical analysis. Findings suggested that there was a correlation between PAH structure and bacterial community composition. Initial characterisation of soil from the timber treatment facility indicated that PAH contamination was unevenly distributed across the site. Bacterial community composition was correlated with the type of PAH present, with microbial community structure associated with soil contaminated with two-ringed PAHs only being distinctly different to communities in soils contaminated with multi-component PAH mixtures. Typically the number of bacterial ribotypes detected in samples did not appear to be adversely affected by the level of contamination. 相似文献

While some scholars have found that government post-disaster assistance supports the incumbent, others have shown that incumbent effects among beneficiaries are imperceptible or negative. This article contributes to this debate by using a regression discontinuity design of households affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston in Fiji to show that the type of assistance provided is an important variable in understanding the effects of aid on perceptions of the government. Residents of Fiji who received a post-disaster cash transfer are up to 20 per cent more likely to be very satisfied with the government than are those who did not. The probability further increases if the cash transfer was provided along with in-kind benefits or vouchers, but it is not affected if beneficiaries were also encouraged to use their own pension savings. This paper provides evidence in favour of the ‘attentive citizen’ theory by demonstrating that beneficiaries actively appraise government responses; it also reveals possible effects of elite capture on the relationship between the government and beneficiaries. 相似文献

The light-dark preference of individual Spirorbis borealis larvae was measured by the relative amount of time spent in the lighted half of a container. Specimens taken from a tidal pool were 20% more photonegative than those obtained outside the pool, probably because of natural selection against being washed out of the pool at high tide. The between-population behavioural difference was maintained in the laboratory, and is genetic in origin. Applying biometrical genetic analysis to larvae grouped into half-sib families, the within-population variation was used to estimate an upper limit to the heritability of 0.36. It is concluded that the differences among populations greatly exceed heritable variation within populations. A numerical selection model based on the estimated maximum heritability suggests, however, that the populations could diverge by 20% in less than a year, in response to local differences in the selection regime. 相似文献

Reservoir operations must respond to changing conditions, such as climate, water demand, regulations, and sedimentation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) can reallocate reservoir storage to respond to such changes. We assembled and analyzed a database of reservoir reallocations implemented and proposed by the Corps. While only a small portion of total reservoir storage nationwide has been reallocated, there are substantial differences in reallocation frequency and magnitude across the nation: some Corps Districts and Divisions use reallocation while others do not, relying more on discretion and small‐scale adaptation of operations. This difference illustrates how water resource agencies like the Corps decentralize management decisions to allow responding to disparate conditions. Decentralized decision‐making provides a responsive approach to water management, while centralized and hierarchical decision‐making is a slower, more deliberative approach. Decentralized decision‐making may lead to the accumulation of short‐term, local decisions over time to the point that the system is managed differently than anticipated. Reallocation, which is a form of planned adaptive management, can be accommodating of multiple competing demands and different stakeholders, yet expensive and less temporally responsive. The challenge for any large water resource management agency is to balance between local‐level, responsive discretion vs. centralized, planned decision‐making. 相似文献

The realisation of an opto-chemical ammonia sensor suitable for personal monitoring tasks is described, comprising a cyanine dye immobilised in a microporous glass thin film. The fabrication of sensor platforms incorporating embossed grating couplers provides a compact optical design with effective waveguiding characteristics, resulting in reversible ammonia sensitivity in the 5-100 ppm range in under 2 min.
