Ocean warming and acidification are co-occurring stressors likely to affect marine biota through climate-driven change to the ocean. We investigated the effects of increased temperature and lowered pH, solely and in combination, on the growth of the endemic Australian bryozoan, Celleporaria nodulosa. Two temperatures and three pH levels were fully crossed in experimental treatments performed in winter 2008 (August) and summer 2009 (February/March). Fragments of C. nodulosa colonies (clones) were collected from Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia, (30°18′S, 153°09′E) and elongation of colonies was assessed periodically over a 12-day incubation period. Lowered pH in winter significantly decreased growth. Elevated temperatures during the summer significantly impeded the growth of bryozoan colonies, possibly masking the effect of ocean acidification and discovering a maximal thermal tolerance at around 27 °C for C. nodulosa. The effects of decreased pH and increased temperature may be seasonally dependent and particularly acute during the summer months. Thermal stress may in fact be the initial stressor before ocean acidification, negatively affecting organisms in such a way that they are unable to survive before feeling the effects of ocean acidification.  相似文献

The social and environmental impacts of rapidly expanding coal and gas industries have generated high levels of public concern and there is increasing evidence of cumulative impacts. In the Bowen Basin of Queensland (Australia) water quality issues have triggered a collaborative response to coordinate monitoring efforts, integrate data and information and undertake regional analysis to inform landscape-scale management. Collaborative governance is promoted as a response to complex environmental problems, such as cumulative impacts. However, application of this approach to the resources and energy sectors remains a significant research gap. This paper reports the results of action research in the 2 years taken to negotiate the establishment of collaborative governance arrangements to address mine-water discharge impacts in the Bowen Basin. The long establishment phase has been required to refine objectives, build trust, develop governance mechanisms and secure resourcing commitments. The partnership established involves more than 20 organisations including regulators, resources and energy companies, agricultural industries and research organisations. The breadth of participating sectors is a significant innovation, but also represents a major challenge in establishing this model of regional environmental governance. Promising strategies adopted to manage these tensions have included neutral brokerage, facilitative leadership, establishing legitimacy of the collaboration and credibility of its reports. The case study provides a cautionary tale of the pursuit of the promise of ‘everyone working together’ to address cumulative impacts. Policy implications include the need for extended commitment and integration of collaborative and other responses.  相似文献

Organic molecular composition measurements with 3.5 min time resolution were performed with the photoionization aerosol mass spectrometer (PIAMS) over an 18-day period in October–November 2007 in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Mass spectra were obtained for a total of 6244 time periods, and the signal intensities of 60 specific m/z ratios corresponding to key organic molecular species were modeled by positive matrix factorization (PMF). Six factors were identified that could be tentatively linked to specific sources (diesel exhaust, car emissions/road dust, meat cooking) or types of compounds (alkanes/alkanoic acids, phthalates, PAHs). Owing to the inherent high time resolution of PIAMS, the temporal (diurnal) and wind direction dependencies of these factors could be examined in detail to assess the impacts of point sources and atmospheric processes. Time-resolved EC/OC and gas-phase data (O3, NOx, CO) were also obtained during the measurement period to help distinguish primary (POC) and secondary (SOC) organic carbon. The total organic carbon (TOC) concentration averaged 2.6 μg m?3 during the measurement period and most (>90%) was classified as primary. Of this, approximately one-third could be assigned as combustion POC and the other two-thirds as non-combustion POC. The PMF results were combined with EC/OC data for source apportionment. The diesel and car/road dust factors together represented about two-thirds of TOC, while the alkane/alkanoic acid and meat cooking factors contributed most of the remaining one-third. The phthalate and PAH factors contributed very little, only a few percent of the total. The diesel factor correlated most strongly to combustion POC, while the sum of the remaining factors correlated well with non-combustion POC.  相似文献

 CuSO4-treated plaster blocks were used to create localised concentrations of copper significantly above ambient levels. Between October 1996 and March 1997 we used this system to manipulate the timing and frequency of transient copper-pollution events close to settlement plates. We assessed the impacts on the development of assemblages of sessile marine invertebrates that occur on hard substrates at Breakwater Pier in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia. Barnacle densities were reduced by up to one-third, while serpulid polychaetes were insensitive. Assemblages at different stages of development were differentially sensitive to short-term pulses. Reductions in sponge and scyphozoan polyp densities were greatest (50%) when pulse-pollution events occurred at times of high settlement. If a pulse copper-pollution event occurred in the first week of substrate becoming available for colonisation, then it had few observable impacts on recruitment for all invertebrates examined. When the first pulse occurred in the first week of the experiment there was no difference between the impacts of single or double-pulse exposures to the toxicant. The EPA's Office of Research and Development is embarking on a long term project to develop a Multimedia Integrated Modeling System (MIMS). The system will have capabilities to represent the transport and fate of nutrients and chemical stressors over multiple spatial and temporal scales. MIMS will be designed to improve the environmental management community's ability to evaluate the impact of air and water quality and watershed management practices on stream and estuarine conditions. The system will provide a computer-based problem-solving environment for testing understanding of multimedia (atmosphere, land, water) environmental problems, such as the movement of chemicals through the hydrologic cycle, and the response of aquatic ecological systems to land-use change, with initial emphasis on the fish health endpoint. The design will attempt to combine the state-of-the-art in computer science, system design, and numerical analysis (i.e., object-oriented design, parallel processing, advanced numerical libraries including analytic elements) with the latest advancements in process level science (hydrology, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, ecology). The purpose of this paper is to introduce a vision for a MIMS and anticipate the challenges to its development.  相似文献

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a primary tool for the stewardship, conservation, and restoration of marine ecosystems, yet 69% of global MPAs are only partially protected (i.e., are open to some form of fishing). Although fully protected areas have well-documented outcomes, including increased fish diversity and biomass, the effectiveness of partially protected areas is contested. Partially protected areas may provide benefits in some contexts and may be warranted for social reasons, yet social outcomes often depend on MPAs achieving their ecological goals to distinguish them from open areas and justify the cost of protection. We assessed the social perceptions and ecological effectiveness of 18 partially protected areas and 19 fully protected areas compared with 19 open areas along 7000 km of coast of southern Australia. We used mixed methods, gathering data via semistructured interviews, site surveys, and Reef Life (underwater visual census) surveys. We analyzed qualitative data in accordance with grounded theory and quantitative data with multivariate and univariate linear mixed-effects models. We found no social or ecological benefits for partially protected areas relative to open areas in our study. Partially protected areas had no more fish, invertebrates, or algae than open areas; were poorly understood by coastal users; were not more attractive than open areas; and were not perceived to have better marine life than open areas. These findings provide an important counterpoint to some large-scale meta-analyses that conclude partially protected areas can be ecologically effective but that draw this conclusion based on narrower measures. We argue that partially protected areas act as red herrings in marine conservation because they create an illusion of protection and consume scarce conservation resources yet provide little or no social or ecological gain over open areas. Fully protected areas, by contrast, have more fish species and biomass and are well understood, supported, and valued by the public. They are perceived to have better marine life and be improving over time in keeping with actual ecological results. Conservation outcomes can be improved by upgrading partially protected areas to higher levels of protection including conversion to fully protected areas.  相似文献

Quantitative measurements have been made on the ultra-structure and capillary supply to the axial muscles of the mesopelagic hatchet fish Argyropelecus hemigymnus (Cocco, 1829). Fish were collected at Eastern North Atlantic Ocean Station 10244, 32°48N; 31°15W during November 1980, from a depth of 480 to 550 m. Mitochondria with densely packed cristae occupy 44.3% of slow-fibre volume. Each myofibril is in direct contact with a mitochondrion. Compared with other fishes studied, the capillary supply to A. hemigymnus slow fibres is poorly developed. The average number of capillaries per fibre is 0.9, such that each m of capillary contact supplies 0.011 m2 of fibre cross-sectional area. The capillary surface area (m2) supplying 1 m3 of slow-fibre mitochondria is 0.17 in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), 0.14 in rat-fish (Chimaera monstrosa), 0.14 in tench (Tinca tinca), 0.16 in catfish (Clarias mossambica), and only 0.025 for A. hemigymnus. It is suggested that, relative to the former species, some modifications in factors determining tissue oxygenation (e.g. myoglobin concentrations, blood flow, perfusion distribution or haemoglobin) and/or mitochondrial respiration rate are required in order to match oxygen supply and demand to the slow muscle in A. hemigymnus.  相似文献

Agricultural soil is a contributor of nitrate to natural waters. High nitrate levels in water leached from soils are related to high nitrate concentrations in drinking water, and excess levels change the ecological balance of rivers and lakes. In this paper, sound solutions to the major environmental issue of limiting nitrate leaching by modifying agricultural practices are discussed. The causes of nitrate leaching from agricultural land are briefly explained and existing measures for the reduction of nitrate losses are described, analyzed and evaluated. Reduction of nutrient leaching is not a question of organic or conventional farming, but rather of the introduction and use of appropriate countermeasures. We propose the following guiding principles to minimize leaching from agricultural soils. To some extent these principles require a new way of thinking: i) environmental indexing of fields and consideration of spatial variability within fields in relation to their contribution to leaching losses within a catchment; ii) reduction of nitrogen inputs to soil to levels slightly below those expected to give the optimum yield by applying less nitrogen fertilizer and by a further reduction in animal density; and iii) use of a range of counter-measures (catch crops, minimum tillage, control of biological processes, etc.) depending on how sensitive the farming system, soil and climate are to the risk of nitrate leaching.  相似文献
