Climate change vulnerability is disproportionately distributed between different population segments in society. This study qualitatively explores how key stakeholders in municipalities (i.e. planning and operational staff in municipalities and the vulnerable themselves) construct social vulnerability in relation to climate change with a specific focus on thermal stress (i.e. heat waves) and which adaptive responses they identify at different levels. The empirical material consists of five focus groups with actors in a large Swedish municipality where the “Vulnerability Factor Card Game” was used as stimulus material to create 10 fictional individuals. The results show that there is a substantial amount of local knowledge about vulnerability drivers and inter-relations between social factors and vulnerability. Local decision-makers also defined a wide range of possible adaptation measures at different municipal levels. Our study clearly indicates that contextualised knowledge, which could complement the quantitative approaches in research, is abundant among municipal planners, staff employed at municipal operations such as health care, and among the vulnerable themselves. This knowledge remains untapped by research to a great extent and only seems to have an insignificant influence on policy-making. In particular, how impacts vary between different social and demographic groups and how adaptation strategies that target the most vulnerable could be defined are of great interest. The present study clearly indicates that social hierarchy may produce increased inequality in the specific context of climate change, vulnerability and adaptive responses at different levels.  相似文献

This paper examines the science-practice interface in the process of adapting to climate change in society. This paper analyses science-based stakeholder dialogues with climate scientists, municipal officers and private individual forest owners in Sweden, and examines how local experts both share scientific knowledge and experience and integrate it into their work strategies and practices. The results demonstrate how local experts jointly conceptualise climate adaptation, how scientific knowledge is domesticated among local experts in dialogue with scientific experts, the emergence of anchoring devices, and the boundary-spanning functions that are at work in the respective sectors.  相似文献

Two analytical methods have been evaluated for quantitative determination of de-conjugated chrysene metabolites in fish bile. High performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence (HPLC-F) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC--MS) were compared regarding instrumental and overall limits of detection (LOD) as well as recoveries for the following nine chrysene compounds: 1-, 2,- 3-, 4- and 6-hydroxychrysene (1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 6-OH-chr), 1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydrochrysene (1,2-DHD-chr), 3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydrochrysene (3,4-DHD-chr), 5,6-dihydroxy-5,6-dihydrochrysene (5,6-DHD-chr) and chrysene. Instrumental LODs were comparable for the two methods whereas the overall LOD was better for HPLC-F. Recoveries varied per chrysene compound for both HPLC-F (62-107%) and GC-MS (48-124%). In vivo formed chrysene metabolites were studied in the bile of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) exposed to chrysene (1 mg/kg) via intra-peritoneal (i.p.) and inter-muscular (i.m.) injection. Total amounts of chrysene metabolites were three times higher in i.p. compared to i.m. exposed cod bile, but the relative distribution of determined metabolites was very similar. 1,2-DHD-chr was the most prominent metabolite in de-conjugated bile and constituted more than 88% of the total chrysene metabolites. Additional chrysene metabolites formed were 3,4-DHD-chr and 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-OH-chr. K-region chrysene metabolites (oxidation at carbons 5 and 6) were not detected and seem to be a less favoured biotransformation route. The two methods were applied and evaluated for analysis of chrysene metabolites in two bile reference materials (BCR 720 and 721) and a limited number of field exposed cods.  相似文献

Intraguild predation interactions make fish communities prone to exhibit alternative stable states with either piscivore or prey fish dominance. In the Baltic Sea, local declines of coastal piscivores like perch (Perca fluviatilis) have been observed to coincide with high densities of sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Mechanisms behind this shift between piscivore and stickleback dominance were studied both experimentally and in field. Results showed that predation by sticklebacks has a strong negative effect on perch larvae survival, but this effect rapidly decreases with increasing perch size, likely due to gape limitations and digestion constraints in sticklebacks. Large spatial and temporal variations in patterns of stickleback migration into perch spawning sites were observed. Whether or not high density of sticklebacks will cause declines in coastal piscivore populations is suggested to depend on the availability of spawning sites in which sticklebacks do not migrate into or arrive late in the reproduction season of coastal piscivores.  相似文献

We tested whether marine survival and migration pattern differed between naturally and hatchery produced European trout Salmo trutta of different origins. The hatchery fish were released 150 m above the river estuary of the southwestern, Norwegian River Imsa, the home of the local population. Recaptures were used as proxy for survival. Wild and local hatchery fish survived better than transplanted hatchery stocks. Trout that were 1 year at release survived less well than 2-year olds, and small individuals less well than larger ones. Relative to their body size at release, populations that originated most distant from the River Imsa, the Baltic River Emån and the Norwegian mountain Lake Tunhovd, exhibited the poorest sea survival. At sea, trout chiefly moved less than 240 km from the river of release, but there were significant differences in dispersal among populations. Hatchery-produced River Emån and Lake Tunhovd trout moved farther from the River Imsa than the south Norwegian sea trout populations, and the marine distributions of the former were similar to that of the natural River Imsa trout. Large fish moved farther from the river than smaller ones. Straying to other rivers was low among wild and local hatchery-produced fish, and significantly lower than among most transplanted populations, and River Emån trout in particular. Thus, the River Imsa trout appeared better adapted to survival under the local conditions than non-local trout with consequences for optimal population management.  相似文献

One goal of the Swedish survey project is to discover possible sources of PCDD/F. Bottom sediment and pike were sampled at various sites near different types of industries along the coast line of two lakes and one river. The results show background levels of PCDD/F in some lakes which can only be explained by atmospheric input. In some lakes paper mill emissions of chlorinated PCDD/F give high levels of local contamination (≈1 ng/g IG) within short distances (<1 km) from the source. PCDD/F from paper mill effluents are transported long distances and traces can be detected over the entire lake area. The PCDD/F levels in pike are correlated with levels in the underlying sediment.  相似文献

Alkylphenol (AP) metabolites were characterized in the bile of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) after exposure to nine individual compounds (10mg/kg fish), 2-methylphenol (2-MP), 4-methylphenol (4-MP), 3,5-dimethylphenol (3,5-DMP), 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (2,4,6-TMP), 4-tert-butylphenol (4-t-BP), 4-tert-butyl-2-methylphenol (4-t-B-2-MP), 4-n-pentylphenol (4-n-PP), 4-n-hexylphenol (4-n-HexP) and 4-n-heptylphenol (4-n-HepP), and a mixture (total dose; 13.5 mg/kg fish) of the nine APs by inter-muscular injection. The degree of alkylation ranged from methyl (C1) to heptyl (C7) and represents the types of APs present in produced water. Fish bile was collected on day 4 and 16 (exposure groups 2-MP, 3,5-DMP, 2,4,6-TMP and 4-t-B-2-MP) following exposure. Characterization of major metabolites was accomplished by enzymatic de-conjugation and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography connected to a fluorescence detector (HPLC-F) acquiring at ex/em 222/306 nm. Two solid phase extraction (SPE) columns were evaluated for clean-up of samples prior to analysis. Independent of alkyl homologue, the glucuronide conjugated APs were the most abundant metabolites (73-100%), whereas sulfates, glucosides and unchanged compounds were excreted in amounts of 0-21%, 0-6.1% and 0-6.3%, respectively. The total concentration of measured metabolites in the bile, determined as their respective APs after de-conjugation, increased with increasing degree of alkylation (3.2+/-2.6 microg/g bile for 2-MP and 571+/-81 microg/g bile for 4-n-HepP) after exposure to an equal dose of AP. Comparison of metabolite concentrations in bile sampled 4 and 16 days after exposure, showed that the levels of 2-MP, 2,4,6-TMP and 4-t-B-2-MP were reduced by 55%, 30% and 45%, respectively whereas 3,5-DMP increased by 25% (not significant). This study suggests that analysis of de-conjugated metabolites in fish bile can be used to monitor AP exposure to fish, due to the relatively high and persistent level of these compounds. However, although HPLC-F is suitable for laboratory exposures, it might not be sufficient selective for field studies.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal variations of PM(2.5), PM(10) and TSP in three African cities of different sizes (Dar es Salaam, Ouagadougou and Gaborone) were investigated using portable particle counters. Three different areas (downtown, green residential and traditional residential) and a reference site were designated in each of the cities in order to detect intra-urban and temporal variability. Morning, noon and night measurements were conducted in the urban areas while observations at reference stations were made continuously over the field periods. A clear diurnal pattern in particle concentrations was found in inland Gaborone and Ouagadougou, with morning and night peaks where the latter was the highest. However, in coastal Dar es Salaam the night peak was almost absent due to delayed stabilisation of the air. Particle concentrations at the Ouagadougou reference station were extreme. The direct contribution of vehicle emissions are of secondary importance since the PM(2.5)/PM(10) ratios are low (0.1-0.3). Much of the particles are supposed to be soil particles that are entrained in the air by daytime high windspeeds followed by nighttime subsidence as the air is stabilised and windspeed decreases. However, in all three cities, resuspension are important as areas with a network of unpaved roads showed the highest concentrations of suspended particles. Generally, the central business district had the lowest concentrations of particulate matter.  相似文献
