We aimed to understand relationships of the weather as biometeorological and hospital admissions due to diseases of arteries and veins by subtypes, which have been scarcely studied, in a national setting in recent years. This is an ecological study. Ten percent of daily hospital admissions from the included hospitals (n?=?1,618) across Germany that were available between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2011 (n?=?5,235,600) were extracted from Statistisches Bundesamt, Germany. We identified I70-I79 Diseases of arteries, arterioles and capillaries and I80-I89 Diseases of veins, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes by International Classification of Diseases version 10 as the study outcomes. Daily weather data from 64 weather stations that covered 13 German states including air temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover, radiation flux and vapour pressure were obtained and generated into physiologically equivalent temperature (PET). Two-way fractional-polynomial prediction was plotted with 95 % confidence intervals. For most of the subtypes from diseases of arteries and veins, hospital admissions slightly peaked in spring and dropped when PET was at 10 °C. There were no other large differences across 12 months. Admissions of peripheral vascular diseases, arterial embolism and thrombosis, phlebitis and thrombophlebitis, oesophageal varices and nonspecific lymphadenitis peaked when PET was between 0 and ?10 °C, while others peaked when PET was between 0 and 10 °C. More medical resources could have been needed on days when PETs were at ?10 to 10 °C than on other days. Adaptation to such weather change for health professionals and the general public would seem to be imperative. 相似文献

Treated wastewater effluent from Las Vegas, Nevada and surrounding communities’ flow through Las Vegas Wash (LVW) into the Lake Mead National Recreational Area at Las Vegas Bay (LVB). Lake sediment is a likely sink for many hydrophobic synthetic organic compounds (SOCs); however, partitioning between the sediment and the overlying water could result in the sediment acting as a secondary contaminant source. Locating the chemical plumes may be important to understanding possible chemical stressors to aquatic organisms. Passive sampling devices (SPMDs and POCIS) were suspended in LVB at depths of 3.0, 4.7, and 6.7 (lake bottom) meters in June of 2008 to determine the vertical distribution of SOCs in the water column. A custom sediment probe was used to also bury the samplers in the sediment at depths of 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm. The greatest number of detections in samplers buried in the sediment was at the 0-10 cm depth. Concentrations of many hydrophobic SOCs were twice as high at the sediment-water interface than in the mid and upper water column. Many SOCs related to wastewater effluents, including fragrances, insect repellants, sun block agents, and phosphate flame retardants, were found at highest concentrations in the middle and upper water column. There was evidence to suggest that the water infiltrated into the sediment had a different chemical composition than the rest of the water column and could be a potential risk exposure to bottom-dwelling aquatic organisms. 相似文献

Many towns and cities consist of similarly sized buildings in relatively regular arrangements with smaller scale roughness elements such as roofs, chimneys and balconies. The objective of this study is to investigate how small scale roughness elements modify the influence of the large scale organized roughness on the dispersion of a passive scalar in a turbulent boundary layer. Wind tunnel experiments were performed using a passive tracer released from a line source and concentration profiles were measured with a Flame Ionisation Detector. The measurements are compared with numerical solutions of the advection–diffusion equation.The results show that decreasing the cavity aspect ratio increases the turbulent vertical mass fluxes, and that the small scale roughness enhances these fluxes, but only in the skimming flow regime. Numerical simulations showed that outside the roughness sub-layer (RSL) the changes in surface roughness could be accounted for by a simple variation of the friction velocity, but inside the RSL the spatial variability of the flow imposed by the roughness elements has much more influence. A simple model for a spatially averaged dispersion coefficient in the RSL has been developed and is shown to agree satisfactorily with the concentrations measured in these experiments. 相似文献

Street intersections play an important role in determining pollutant concentrations in the urban canopy – vehicle emissions often increase in the vicinity of road intersections, and the complex flow patterns that occur within the intersection determine the pollutant fluxes into adjoining streets and into the atmosphere. Operational models for urban air quality therefore need to take account of the particular characteristics of street intersections. We have performed an experimental and numerical investigation of flow and dispersion mechanisms within an urban intersection, and on the basis of our observations and results, we have developed a new operational model for pollutant exchanges in the intersection, which takes account of the non-uniformity of the pollutant fluxes entering and leaving the intersection. The intersection is created by two streets of square cross-section, crossing orthogonally; concentrations were measured by releasing a neutrally buoyant tracer gas from a line source located in one of the streets. As a general result, the numerical simulations agree well with the measurements made in the wind tunnel experiments, except for the case of ground-level concentrations, where the computed concentrations far from the axis of the line source are significantly lower than the measured values. In the first part of the study we investigate the influence of an intersection on the velocity and concentration fields in the adjoining streets; we show that the immediate influence of the intersection extends within the adjoining streets, to a distance of the order of the characteristic size of the streets. A large recirculating vortex is formed at the entrance to the cross-wind streets, and this determines the exchange of pollutants between the streets and the intersection. For some wind directions the average velocity in the street segment between intersections is the same as that which occurs in an infinitely long street with the same wind, but for other angles the average velocity in the finite-length street is significantly lower. The average concentration along a finite-length street is significantly different from that observed in an infinitely long street. In the second part of the study we investigate how the pollutant fluxes in the incoming streets are redistributed amongst the outgoing streets. An analysis of the mean streamlines shows that the flows remain relatively planar, with little variation over the vertical, and we have exploited this result to develop a simple operational model for the redistribution of pollutant fluxes within the intersection. This model has been further adapted to take account of the influence of fluctuations in wind direction over typical averaging periods. Problem
Enforced primary seatbelt laws can reduce morbidity and mortality associated with motor-vehicle crashes. Constituent support is an important factor associated with legislator voting behavior toward injury prevention laws. Little is known about attitudes toward a primary seat belt law among adults in rural states without a primary seat belt law.Methods
Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey, a telephone survey of a representative sample of adults in Montana, were used to assess attitudes toward a primary seat belt law.Results
Sixty-one percent of respondents supported a primary seat belt law. Using multiple logistic regression analyses, women (AOR 1.87; 95% CI 1.49-2.36), persons aged 65 years and older (1.45; 1.06-1.96), American Indians (2.71; 1.55-4.75), those with health insurance (1.51; 1.07-2.14), and those who reported always wearing their seat belt (4.05; 3.14-5.21) were more likely to support a primary seat belt law than respondents without these characteristics.Conclusions

Farmers and extensionists can use forecasts about agro-climatic conditions to reduce risks of agricultural production. Eighteen extension agents, researchers, consultants, and farmers provided feedback about decision support tools that utilize such forecasts during focus groups that were conducted in Florence, South Carolina on January 14, 2011. Climate Risk and County Yield Database were the tools most selected as potentially useful for agricultural extension in South Carolina. An irrigation scheduler was the most frequently mentioned tool to be developed. Also, a survey of Clemson University’s extension personnel was conducted in January and February 2011 to assess interest of South Carolina’s growers and producers in using climate forecasts, eleven potential uses of climate forecasts by extension’s clientele, and potential usefulness to extensionists of twelve specific forecasts. Clemson’s extensionists represent approximately 97 % of the state’s agricultural extensionists. They are more likely than not to agree that growers and producers are interested in using climate forecasts. Most of the state’s extension personnel also think that farmers could use a climate forecast to improve irrigation management and planting schedules. A majority of the state’s extensionists thinks that a freeze alert could be useful to them and the proportion that thinks the forecast could be useful exceeds the proportion that thinks any other forecast could be useful. Most extensionists also think that a forecast of plant moisture stress could be useful to help farmers schedule irrigation. The key survey results are remarkably similar to those from surveys of extension personnel at North Carolina State University in early 2009 and University of Florida in late 2004. 相似文献

A field study was conducted at Kentucky State University (KSU) Research Farm. The soil in five plots was mixed with sewage sludge, five plots were mixed with yard waste compost, five plots were mixed with laying hen manure each at 15 t acre?1, and five unamended plots that never received soil amendments were used for comparison purposes. Plots were planted with onion, Allium cepa L. var. Super Star-F1. The objectives of this investigation were to: 1) determine the concentrations of two organosulfur compounds (dipropyl disulfide and dipropyl trisulfide) in onion bulbs and 2) investigate the effect of mixing soil with three amendments (sewage sludge, yard waste, and chicken manure) on the concentration of dipropyl disulfide and dipropyl trisulfide in onion bulbs. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analyses of onion oil in chloroform extracts revealed the presence of two major fragment ions that correspond to dipropyl disulfide and – trisulfide. Concentration of these two organic sulfur compounds was greatest (1.5 and 0.8 mg 100 g?1 fresh weight, respectively) in onion bulbs of plants grown in chicken manure and lowest (0.4 and 0.07 mg 100 g?1 fresh weight, respectively) in onion bulbs of plants grown in yard waste compost treatments. Soils contaminated with heavy metals can pose a major risk to freshwaters and food chains. In this study, the success of organic and inorganic intervention strategies to alleviate toxicity in a highly acidic soil heavily contaminated with As, Cu, Pb, and Zn was evaluated over 112 d in a mesocosm trial. Amelioration of metal toxicity was assessed by measuring changes in soil solution chemistry, metal leaching, plant growth, and foliar metal accumulation. Either green waste- or MSW-derived composts increased plant yield and rooting depth, reduced plant metal uptake, and raised the pH and nutrient status of the soil. We conclude that composts are well suited for promoting the re-vegetation of contaminated sites; however, care must be taken to ensure that very short-term leaching pulses of heavy metals induced by compost amendment are not of sufficient magnitude to cause contamination of the wider environment. 相似文献

Atmospheric mercury was monitored from January 1997 through the end of December 1999 in eight sampling locations in Connecticut. Four sampling locations were chosen along the shores of Long Island Sound and four were chosen in interior sections of Connecticut. Sampling locations were chosen to represent both rural and urban sectors. Average concentrations of gaseous and particulate mercury were found to be 2.06 ng/m3 and 10.5 pg/m3, respectively. The weekly average wet deposition fluxes of mercury and methylmercury over the three-year sampling period were measured to be 611 and 11 microg/ha/week, respectively. Concentrations of gaseous, particulate and wet flux of mercury were found to be significantly higher in urban areas than the rural sampling locations. There was, however, no significant difference between the mean gaseous and particulate concentrations of mercury in coastal and inland sampling locations. No significant difference was observed either between the wet fluxes of total mercury in coastal and inland sampling locations and there was no spatial gradient for mercury concentration and deposition. The data of this study suggest that vehicular traffic and localized emission sources in urban areas play a significant role in determining the atmospheric concentration of mercury in Connecticut. 相似文献
