ABSTRACT

Anomalies appear to exist in our understanding of atmospheric sulfur compounds, specifically as evidenced in the time trends of the different chemical forms of these compounds. Trends determined at a number of locations by several different groups seem to indicate that, responding to emission reductions across North America, the concentration of SO2 in the atmosphere is declining more rapidly than that of aerosol SO4 2-. A number of possible reasons for this discrepancy are examined, but it is not possible to provide a definitive answer at this stage. The intent is to stimulate debate, because shortcomings in our understanding of the processes involved could have profound implications for the credibility of abatement strategies and policies for both acid deposition and fine particulate matter (PM).  相似文献

Abstract

The effect of intratracheal administration of DDT (5 mg/100 g body weight) or endosulfan (1 mg/100 g body weight) to rats for three consecutive days, has been studied on liver lipid metabolism. The administration of DDT but not endosulfan significantly increased the liver weight and the microsomal protein contents. Both DDT and endosulfan treatments significantly increased the contents of microsomal phosphatidylcholine (PC), total‐free‐ and esterified cholesterol. The distribution of unsaturated fatty acids of microsomal PC and PE was increased by DDT treatment. The intratracheal administration of DDT caused fatty infiltration of liver which was probably due to increased synthesis of triglycerides (TG). This is supported by the increased incorporation of radioactive palmitate‐l‐14C into microsomal TG. However, the increased incorporation of palmitate‐l‐14C into microsomal PC and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) after the DDT treatment, was due to the increased transacylation reaction supported by the decreased activity of microsomal phospholipase A. The intratracheal adminstration of endosulfan did not has pronounced effect on liver fatty infiltration, or transacylation reaction in microsomal PC and PE. However, the results have shown that the treatments of DDT or endosulfan increased the PC contents and the incorporation of radioactive [methyl‐3H]choline into PC of microsomes, resulting the increased synthesis of PC via CDPcholine pathway. Thus, the intratracheally administered DDT or endosulfan to rats showed that both the insecticides cause manifestations in the biochemistry of microsomal membrane lipids, although the effects of DDT being more pronounced. Therefore, the translocation effects of these insecticides or metabolites from lung to liver is established.  相似文献

Abstract

Administration of endosulfan significantly increased microsomal protein, cytochrome P‐450 content and the activity of aminopyrine N‐demethylase. Effect of endosulfan and actinomycin D either alone or together on microsomal protein, cytochrome P‐450, NADPH cytochrome c reductase, aniline hydroxylase, aminopyrine N‐demethylase, phosphatidylcholine content, incorporation of 3H‐choline and 14C‐methionine were studied in rats given amino acid deficient and supplemented diets. Administration of endosulfan significantly increased the above parameters in both the dietary groups, whereas administration of actinomycin D did not have any effect in rats fed supplemented diets, however, significant decrease in the PC and the incorporation of choline and methionine into PC of rats fed deficient diet were observed. A positive correlation in the effect of endosulfan on hepatic mixed function oxidase activity and hepatic phosphatidylcholine is observed.  相似文献

The integrated process rates (IPRs) estimated by the Eta–CMAQ model at grid cells along the trajectory of the air mass transport path were analyzed to quantitatively investigate the relative importance of physical and chemical processes for O3 formation and evolution over the northeastern U.S. during the 2004 International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) period. The Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model is used to determine the back trajectory of air masses reaching the northeast by linking a downwind receptor to upwind source areas. The process analysis is applied to a high O3 episode occurring on July 22, 2004 at three selected sites in the northeastern U.S. The process analysis at the location of the site shows that during the daytime, the O3 concentrations in the surface layer are mainly enhanced by the vertical diffusion of O3-rich air from aloft, followed by horizontal advection (HADV) and chemical production (CHEM), whereas dry deposition (DDEP) and vertical advection (ZADV) mainly deplete O3 concentrations at the sites of Valley Central (VC), NY and Castle Spring (CS), NH. By integrating the effects of each process over the depth of the daytime planetary boundary layer (PBL), it was found that at the VC site, CHEM and HADV contributed about 53% and 41%, respectively, to O3 levels within the PBL. This confirms the significance of regional transport of O3 from the industrialized areas into the Northeast. On the other hand, the process analysis results for O3 formation in moving air masses indicate that on July 22, large chemical production of O3 along the transport path over the polluted urban regions leads to significant increase in O3 in the air mass reaching the VC site, whereas the low chemical production of O3 along the transport path over the low emission regions leads to the low O3 concentration at the site of Belleayre Mountain (BM), NY. The dramatic buildup of O3 concentration from 50 ppb to 102 ppb in the air masses before reaching the VC site after 12:00 EST on 7/22 indicates the significant impact of pollution from the northeastern urban corridor at this site. On the basis of the results at the CS site, it was found that high NOx emissions along the transport path led to large chemical production of O3 in the air mass reaching the CS site on July 22. In contrast, the low chemical production of O3 associated with low emission (relatively clean conditions) along the transport path over the northern portions of the domain is responsible for the low O3 concentration at the CS site on July 26.  相似文献

Pesticide-humic interactions are known to have environmental significance in modifying the toxicity and mobility of agricultural chemicals. to test this, interaction between gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH) released from the sand coated with gamma-HCH and humic acid was investigated using thin layer chromatography and spectral studies such as UV (ultraviolet), IR (infrared), mass and FAB (fast atom bombardment) mass spectrometry. These studies revealed the evidence of loose interchelation between gamma-HCH and humic acid. the significance of the results in relation to detoxification of gamma-HCH in aquatic ecosystems are discussed.  相似文献

The plants of Spinacia oleracea L. grown on contaminated soil (CS) and different amendments of tannery sludge (TS) have shown high accumulation of metals in its edible part. The accumulation of toxic metal (Cr) in the leaves of the plants grown on CS was recorded as 40.67 microgg(-1)dw. However, the leaves of the plants grown on 100% TS have accumulated about two times (70.80 microgg(-1)dw) higher Cr than the 10% TS (31.21 microgg(-1)dw). Among growth parameters, the root length was more affected at 90 d than the shoot length, number of leaves and leaf area. The study of scanning electron micrographs showed 29.31% increase in stomatal length in the leaves of the plants grown on CS as compared to garden soil (GS), which served as control, however it decreased in the plants grown on higher amendments of TS. The decrease in MDA content at initial period of exposure and lower amendment was recorded in the leaves, whereas, significant increase (>10% TS onward) was observed with increase in tannery sludge ratio at 90 d as compared to GS. A coordinated increase in all the studied antioxidants (cysteine, non-protein thiol, ascorbic acid, carotenoid contents) was found up to 75 d of growth. At 90 d, most of the antioxidant decreased as compared to 75 d causing oxidative stress as evidenced by increased level of lipid peroxidation and decreased chlorophyll and protein contents. Maximum increase of 181.43% in MDA content and maximum decrease of 53.69% in total chlorophyll content was recorded in the leaves of the plants grown on 100% TS after 90 d of growth. The plants grown on CS have shown an increase in shoot length, number of leaves, leaf area, photosynthetic pigments and protein contents and in all the studied antioxidants. Thus, these plants are able to combat stress involving defense mechanism, resulting in healthy growth of the plants. The results are well coordinated as there is no change in the MDA content as compared to the plants grown on GS. In view of high Cr accumulation in edible part of S. oleracea grown on CS after irrigation with tap water, it is not advisable to use these plants for edible purposes. Summing up, it is recommended that the level of metals in the edible part should be checked instead of healthy growth as deciding parameter for consumption. It is demonstrated through this study that metal enriched plants have detoxification mechanism and grow well on organic matter enriched contaminated soil.  相似文献

The main aim of this paper was to identify job stressors, gender responses and association of psychosocial work stressors with prevalence of work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among foundry workers. The data were obtained with ergonomics checklist using Likert scale. The results of this study showed a high prevalence of MSDs among workers. The male workers were more prone to pain in neck while the female workers were more prone to MSDs in upper back and shoulders. Correlation analysis showed significant relationship of dimensions of work aspects with pain and discomfort. It proved that the work-related MSDs are the results of interaction of multiple stressors associated with work and work environment, and other personal factors. ANOVA indicated that the perception of work aspects as stressors differed significantly between male and female workers.  相似文献

Sustainability, industrial ecology, eco-efficiency, and green chemistry are guiding the development of the next generation of materials, products, and processes. Biodegradable plastics and bio-based polymer products based on annually renewable agricultural and biomass feedstock can form the basis for a portfolio of sustainable, eco-efficient products that can compete and capture markets currently dominated by products based exclusively on petroleum feedstock. Natural/Biofiber composites (Bio-Composites) are emerging as a viable alternative to glass fiber reinforced composites especially in automotive and building product applications. The combination of biofibers such as kenaf, hemp, flax, jute, henequen, pineapple leaf fiber, and sisal with polymer matrices from both nonrenewable and renewable resources to produce composite materials that are competitive with synthetic composites requires special attention, i.e., biofiber–matrix interface and novel processing. Natural fiber–reinforced polypropylene composites have attained commercial attraction in automotive industries. Natural fiber—polypropylene or natural fiber—polyester composites are not sufficiently eco-friendly because of the petroleum-based source and the nonbiodegradable nature of the polymer matrix. Using natural fibers with polymers based on renewable resources will allow many environmental issues to be solved. By embedding biofibers with renewable resource–based biopolymers such as cellulosic plastics; polylactides; starch plastics; polyhydroxyalkanoates (bacterial polyesters); and soy-based plastics, the so-called green bio-composites are continuously being developed.  相似文献

较高的作物产量通常需要较高的养分使用率,因此就使无机氮的使用增加.到2030年,估计粮食的年需求量约为28亿t,相应的无机氮消耗量为9600万t(在1995~1997年间,无机氮的年消耗量为7800万t).从全球范围来讲,由于使用无机肥料而流失到周围环境中去的无机氮目前为每年3600万t,价值117亿美元,它们对环境保护起反作用.但是,新型的提高肥料使用效率(FUE)技术可以增加产量但不使无机氯的使用成比例增加.并且,含氮养分的供应可以通过改进农业生产系统和开发如生物固氮(BNF)等可替代资源而扩大.到2030年,随着出台适当的政策、实施技术转让、对研究和投资提供支持以及在农田采用化肥使用效率(FUE)和生物固氮(BNF)技术等,可以使无机氯每年节省1000万t,价值33亿美元.  相似文献

The paper deals with 45 species of 21 genera of fresh water blue green algae (BGA) from three different agro-climatic zones of Uttar Pradesh. Samples were collected from different habitats varying in physico-chemical properties. Out of 45 species, 13 species belonged to order Chroococcales, 31 to order Nostocales, while only 1 species belonged to order Stigonimatales i.e. Fischerella mucicola. The physico-chemical parameters like pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, nitrate, nitrite and rainfall play an important role in the periodicity of BGA. A positive correlation was found between dissolved oxygen (DO) of different ponds and species diversity, except in the case of western region of Uttar Pradesh (Farukhabad and Mahoba districts) where a positive correlation was found in electrical conductivity and total dissolved solids.  相似文献
