The study of benthic foraminifera in sediment cores provides the opportunity to recognize environmental changes, including those due to the anthropogenic impact. The integration of these data with chemical-physical parameters provides a comprehensive quality assessment. This research was applied to a sediment core collected in the Augusta bay, where a very large commercial and military harbor and one of the largest petrochemical poles in Europe are present. Inside the petrochemical area also operated, from 1958 to 2003, a chlor-alkali plant with mercury cell technology which caused anthropic contamination of surrounding land and marine areas. The sediment core was collected in front of this plant and characterized for grain size and pollutants directly associated to chlor-alkali activity, such as mercury (Hg), barium (Ba), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Composition of foraminiferal assemblages and faunal parameters such as specific diversity, faunal density, abundance of abnormal specimens, and foraminiferal size were investigated as potential indicators of environmental status. Statistical analysis indicated a main common origin for Hg, Ba, and PCBs and the influence of pollutants on species distribution and faunal diversity and density. Exceptionally high Hg concentrations (63–680 mg/kg d.w.) were recorded in the whole core, where the geochronological study attributed the most contaminated levels to the period of maximum activity of the chlor-alkali plant, while a decrease of contamination was recorded after the stop of the activity. Some sexual selection models envisage exaggerated male secondary sexual characters to be costly and therefore reliable indicators of the quality of potential mates to choosy females. If male secondary sexual characters have a natural selection cost, they may be linked to each other by reciprocally constraining relationships that would prevent individual males from increasing their level of multiple signaling. Barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) males have at least two costly signals relevant to socio-sexual interactions: tail length and song. Under the hypothesis that a trade-off exists between male signals, we manipulated the maintenance cost of tail ornaments to test whether this reduced the quantity and quality of song, a condition-dependent, phenotypically plastic signal. Contrary to our expectation, tail elongation had no effect on singing activity and song complexity. However, tail-elongated males produced songs with longer terminal parts ('rattles'). Long rattles are associated with highly competitive social contexts and high circulating levels of testosterone, suggesting that tail-elongated males were more frequently involved in either male-male aggressive or inter-sexual interactions. Therefore, this study shows that males are not displaying multiple signals at the maximum possible level, implying that this system is open to unreliable communication. The transfer of peat organic matter (OM) from tidal pools of upper littoral to downstream rocky shores and its potential incorporation
into marine biota were investigated using the stable isotope approach. Samplings were carried out in September 2004 in two
SW Icelandic sites (Osar and Hvassahraun), where we selected (1) areas with shores where grass gently declined towards rocks
and, on reaching the sea line, formed small tidal peat pools and (2) areas where grass and rocky shores were not contiguous,
rather the grass lower limits were several hundreds of meters back from the shore. In both grass and no grass areas, in the
intertidal zone, all benthic organisms and all potential OM sources were sampled. Dominant macroalgae were Ascophyllum nodosum ([Linnaeus] Le Jolis) and Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus. In grass sites, organisms partially reflected the isotopic composition of peat OM, while in no grass sites, peat

The process used to obtain recycled Al alloys depends on the scrap quality. Rotary furnaces are normally used in Europe as they allow a great productivity and they can process low quality scrap using a salt flux to protect the molten metal from oxidation. In this article, the effect of the quantity of salt on the metal recovery has been experimentally investigated by melting several types of scrap under a mixture of NaCl–KCl–Na3AlF6 salts. The quantity of salt has been related to the salt factor (SF), which is the ratio between the non-metallic content in the scrap and the quantity of salt required. The same levels of salt factor have been tested by melting the scrap in rotary and crucible furnaces. The metal recovery increases with the salt content for both furnaces. The results obtained with the different melting processes are comparable because the yield difference is similar considering different salt factors. Crucible furnace gives greater metal recovery but it cannot replace rotary furnace in Al refining industry due to lower melting capacity. However, the results highlight that the optimisation of the Al refining process can be supported by preliminary tests through crucible furnaces reducing the time and material consumptions. 相似文献

In seasonally fluctuating environments, timing of reproduction is a crucial determinant of fitness. Studies of birds show that late breeding attempts generally result in offspring of lower reproductive value, with lower recruitment and long-term survival prospects. Several proximate mechanisms, including a seasonal decline of immune system functioning, may lead to a seasonal decline of offspring fitness. We investigated seasonal variation in offspring quality by subjecting first- and second-brood chicks of a sexually size dimorphic species, the European starling Sturnus vulgaris, to an immune challenge with a bacterial endotoxin (LPS), and evaluated their growth and physiological response in terms of total plasma antioxidant capacity (TAC), concentration of reactive oxygen metabolites and hematocrit. LPS challenge did not affect chick growth or oxidative status. However, hematocrit of second-brood chicks was higher in LPS chicks compared to controls. Body mass halfway through the rearing period (days?8–9 post-hatching), TAC and hematocrit were lower among second- vs. first-brood chicks. Interestingly, sexual dimorphism in body mass at days?8–9 post-hatching markedly differed between broods, first-brood males being 4.7% and second-brood males 22.7% heavier than their sisters, respectively. Pre-fledging mortality occurred among second-brood chicks only and was strongly female-biased. Our findings suggest that starling chicks, even if in poor conditions, are little affected by a bacterial challenge, at least in the short-term. Moreover, our study indicates that sex differences in body size, possibly mediated by sex-specific maternal investment in egg size, may heavily impact on pre-fledging survival in a different way in the course of the breeding season, resulting in sex-specific seasonal decline of offspring fitness. Finally, we suggest that levels of circulating antioxidants should be regarded among the proximate causes of the association between timing of fledging and long-term survival in avian species. 相似文献

Under conditions of spatial and/or temporal variability in predation risk, prey organisms often rely on acquired predator
recognition to balance the trade-offs between energy intake and risk avoidance. The question of ‘for how long’ should prey
retain this learned information is poorly understood. Here, we test the hypothesis that the growth rate experienced by prey
should influence the length of the ‘memory window’. In a series of laboratory experiments, we manipulated growth rate of juvenile
rainbow trout and conditioned them to recognize a novel predator cue. We subsequently tested for learned recognition either
24 h or 8 days post-conditioning. Our results suggest that trout with high versus low growth rates did not differ in their
response to learned predator cues when tested 24 h post-conditioning. However, trout on a high growth rate exhibited no response
to the predator cues after 8 days (i.e. did not retain the recognition of the predator odour), whereas trout on a lower growth
rate retained a strong recognition of the predator. Trout that differed in their growth rate only after conditioning did not
differ in their patterns of retention, demonstrating growth rate after learning does not influence retention. Trout of different
initial sizes fed a similar diet (percent body mass per day) showed no difference in retention of the predator cue. Together,
these data suggest that growth rate at the time of conditioning determines the ‘memory window’ of trout. The implications

Hard (nonbiodegradable) nonionic surfactants are the most commonly used nonionics in Israel. This has no parallel in western industrial countries. Consequently, available methods for nonionic determination should be appropriately applied and validated under the particular local in vivo conditions. This study presents preliminary results of the application of modified available analycal hydrophilic and hydrophobic methods and procedures for nonionic detergents determination to the complex system of typical sewage effluents in Israel under in vitro (laboratory controlled), simulative, semi-in vivo, and in vivo (real, uncontrolled) local field conditions. Using the hydrophilic Cobalto thiocyanate method and applying several essential modifications and transformations have facilitated the obtaining of “summative,” averaged, factorized calibration curves which represent the local environmental reality. Based on the above in vitro-in vivo transformations, an unexpected low concentration of nonionic surfactants (3–4 mg/L) has been determined in typical local municipal sewage effluents. 相似文献
