The non-random dispersal of plant propagules is thought to counter competitive exclusion and thus promote the survival of competitively inferior species. We investigated this process by modelling the outcome of interactions between species with competitive ability defined as a function of both life-history traits and the environment with both random and clustered dispersal strategies and in environmentally homogeneous and heterogeneous environments. Four main results emerged: (1) environmental heterogeneity was seen to promote co-existence in conjunction with associated trait variation for tolerance to the environmental variable and where this trait variation was effectively limited by ‘trade-off’ such that no single species had an overall competitive advantage, (2) consistent with theory, random dispersal appeared to enhance the likelihood of competitive exclusion, whereas clustering favoured co-existence, (3) the ecological outcome of interactions between dispersal and competitive relationships varied as a function of the trait determining the competitive advantage within a particular environment, and (4) promotion of co-existence by clustered dispersal was most marked when associated with environmental heterogeneity. It is argued that these results suggest that current ecological models of species interactions may need to be modified to incorporate a more realistic understanding of competitive ability if we are to better understand the factors effecting species co-existence.  相似文献

Abstract: National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA) photographs taken by astronauts from low Earth orbit can provide information relevant to conservation biology. This data source is now more accessible because of improvements in digitizing technology, Internet file transfer, and availability of image processing software. We present three examples of conservation-related projects that benefited from the use of astronaut photographs. First, NASA scientists requested that astronauts photograph the area of the controversial Isahaya Bay reclamation project in Japan. Japanese researchers used photographs from before and after the reclamation as a tool for communication with the public about the effects of tidal-flat loss. The newly acquired images and the availability of high-resolution digital images from NASA archives provided timely public information on the observed changes. Second, we digitally classified and analyzed a Space Shuttle photograph of Chobe National Park in Botswana to identify the locations of woodlands affected by elephants. Field validation later confirmed that areas identified on the image showed evidence of elephant damage. Third, we used a summary map from intensive field surveys of seagrasses in Shoalwater Bay, Australia, as reference data for a supervised classification of a digitized photograph taken from orbit. The classification distinguished seagrasses, sediments, and mangroves with accuracy approximating that in studies using other satellite remote-sensing data. Astronaut photographs are in the public domain, and the database of nearly 400,000 photographs from the late 1960s to the present is available at a single searchable location on the Internet (  http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop ). These photographs can be used by conservation biologists as a source of general information about the landscape and for quantitative mapping.  相似文献

It has been previously shown that the desorption of either a chemisorbed or a physically adsorbed gas can be enhanced by the subsequent introduction of a foreign gas. Under conditions in which desorption recovery of butane from activated, carbon was 50 to 65%, subsequent adsorption of CCl4 enhanced the recovery of butane to 100%. Recovery of CCl2F2, originally 79%, was enhanced to 99% by the same method. The method of enhanced desorption was applied to the recovery of samples from activated carbons exposed to atmospheres in Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Washington, D. C, and Cincinnati. Three different types of carbons, characterized by different distributions of pore diameters, were used simultaneously in the Cincinnati sampling. In general, the enhanced desorption technique was advantageous in providing analytical information on adsorbed samples recovered from carbon media. The enhancement effect is especially marked with hydrocarbon material. The effects of these structural attributes of the carbon media are evaluated by detailed consideration of infrared absorptions.  相似文献

This paper reports mercury (Hg) concentrations and fluxes in precipitation that was collected from 2006 to 2008 at three sites in Canada: sub-Arctic boreal forest, sub-Arctic coast, and southern Alberta, using cold-adapted precipitation collectors which operated reliably at temperatures below ?30 °C during the study. The southern Alberta site (Crossfield) may be influenced by Calgary urban air, whereas the sub-Arctic coastal (Churchill, Manitoba) and boreal forest (Fort Vermilion, Alberta) sites are in more remote northern areas. Annual mean Hg concentrations in precipitation (5.0–9.2 ng L?1) at the study sites were in the lower half of the range reported for southern Canada and the USA by the Mercury Deposition Network (MDN). But owing to typically low precipitation rates, gross wet Hg fluxes (0.54–2.0 μg m?2 yr?1) were among the lowest reported by MDN, with Crossfield having about twice the flux in 2007 of the other two sites. Flux was significantly correlated with precipitation, and thus was highest in summer (June–August) and lowest during winter, a pattern typical of other temperate continental locations. There was no evidence of higher wet Hg fluxes or concentrations in springtime at Churchill where atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) occur. Measured gross deposition fluxes at the study locations were ~2–8 times lower than estimated by GEOS-Chem and GRAHM atmospheric models. The largest discrepancy occurred for Churchill, which raises the question of how well Hg deposition from AMDEs is described by current models. Better agreement between measurements and models was obtained from MDN stations in Alberta and Alaska, where wet Hg fluxes were 2–10 times higher than the study sites either because of power plant emissions (Alberta), or because of high precipitation rates (Alaska).  相似文献

Microbial mineralization of urea and uric acid in poultry litter results in the production of ammonia, which can lead to decreased poultry performance, malodorous emissions, and loss of poultry litter value as a fertilizer. Despite the fact that this is a microbial process, little is known about how the microbial populations, especially ammonia-producing (ureolytic) organisms in poultry litter, respond to litter amendments such as aluminum sulfate (Al(2)(SO(4))(3).14H(2)O; alum). The goal of this study was to measure the temporal changes in total bacterial and fungal populations and urease-producing microorganisms in nontreated litter or litter treated with 10% alum. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to target the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, the fungal 18S rRNA gene, or the urease gene of bacterial and fungal ammonia producers in a poultry litter incubation study. Nontreated poultry litter had relatively high total (2.8 +/- 0.8 x 10(10) cells g(-1) litter) and ureolytic (2.8 +/- 1.3 x 10(8) cells g(-1) litter) bacterial populations. Alum treatment reduced the total bacterial population by 50% and bacterial urease producers by 90% within 4 wk. In contrast, at 16 wk after alum treatment, the fungal population was three orders of magnitude higher in alum-treated litter than in nontreated litter (3.5 +/- 0.8 x 10(7) cells g(-1) litter and 5.5 +/- 2.5 x 10(4) cells g(-1) litter, respectively). The decrease in pH produced by alum treatment is believed to inhibit bacterial populations and favor growth of fungi that may be responsible for the mineralization of organic nitrogen in alum-treated litters.  相似文献

An ambient air sampling study was conducted around a municipal waste combustor; a primary goal was to develop procedures and methods to evaluate the emissions of organic mutagens resulting from incomplete combustion of municipal waste. The products of Incomplete combustion from incineration include complex mixtures of organics, particularly polycycllc aromatic compounds, which are present after atmospheric dilution and cooling In emissions as semi-volatile or particle bound organic compounds. Combustion emissions are generally recognized as a potential cancer risk since they contain many carcinogenic and mutagenlc polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Analyzing such a complex mixture for the presence of even a few selected chemicals is difficult and provides risk information on only a fraction of the chemicals present. Bioassay methods, however, may be directly applied to evaluate the mutagenic and potential carcinogenic activity of the complex organics from combustion emissions. The Salmonella (Ames) assay was used to determine the mutagenicity associated with particles from ambient air collected near a municipal waste combustor. Dose-response data was generated, and mutagenicity concentrations were calculated to demonstrate the utility of bioassay In assessing the potential Impact of emissions from municipal waste combustion. This phase of study quantified mutagenicity concentrations In ambient air but did not detect organic mutagens that could be attributed to Incinerator emissions.  相似文献

Air trajectory and particle scattering data (bsp) for the period 1984-1989 are used to determine the relationship between atmospheric transport and visual air quality at the Grand Canyon National Park. Using cluster analysis, 72-hour back-trajectories arriving four times per day were grouped into distinct transport patterns. Northwesterly and southerly/southwesterly flow dominate in the winter and summer seasons, respectively. Comparisons of bsp values accompanying different transport patterns showed a clear relationship between air flow pathway and light scattering due to small particles during the non-summer months only. An index is defined which describes the percentage of annual trajectories belonging to specific transport routes delivering predominantly clear air to the GCNP.  相似文献
