We assess the bioaccumulation of metals (Pb, Hg, Cd, Fe, Mg, Zn, Cu, Mn, Mo, Cr) and effects of landfill leachates on morphological (RI, relative weights), plasma (GPT, GOT, creatinine), and genotoxic (MNT) parameters in wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus, inhabiting close the Garraf landfill site (NE Spain). Due to the high age- and sex-dependent variation in wild populations, we also studied the effect of these biotic factors on the parameters studied. Wood mice from the landfill site, sited in a partially protected area, showed more Cd, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Mo, and Cr than specimens from the reference site. Moreover, mice near the landfill registered low RI and high relative renal weight, GPT, and MN frequency, which indicate that the landfill affects the health of wild mice. In contrast to sympatric shrews from a previous study, wood mice showed lower bioaccumulation of metals and lower variation caused by biotic factors. Moreover, the morphological and physiological alterations demonstrated that they were also more sensitive at environmental pollution. Given the contribution of small mammals to ecosystem function and the scarce ecotoxicological data on the effects of landfill pollution on wild terrestrial mammals, we consider that our study can be used to improve the management of this protected area. 相似文献

Here we quantified the bioaccumulation of metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and chromium) and assessed several morphological (RI, relative weights) and genotoxic parameters as biomarkers of pollution from the landfill of Garraf (Barcelona, NE Spain). Specimens of Crocidura russula (Insectivora, Mammalia) from the landfill site showed increased Pb, Cd, Mg, Zn, Cu, and Cr concentrations in their tissues. Levels of mercury were below detection limits. Concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Cr varied significantly with age and no differences were found between males and females. While no differences were found in morphological parameters between shrews from the two sites, those from the polluted one showed more micronuclei in blood than those from reference site (1.786+/-0.272 vs. 0.088+/-0.045 per thousand; U=46.000, p<0.001). The considerable amounts of potentially toxic metals (Pb till 59.71 and Cd till 56.57microgg(-1) DW in kidneys) and the genotoxic effects indicate the harmful effect on biota. Summary Honeybees often abandon non-depleting food sources with a partially filled crop. This behaviour does not maximise the net rate of energy extraction from the food sources, and thus contradicts predictions of some common models for central place foragers. We show that including the metabolic costs of transport of nectar leads to models that predict partial crop-loading. Furthermore, the observed crop loads of honeybees are less consistent with those predicted by maximization of delivery rate to the hive (net energetic gain/ unit time), than with those predicted by maximization of energetic efficiency (net energetic gain/unit energy expenditure). We argue that maximization of energetic efficiency may be an adaptation to a limited flight-cost budget. This constraint is to be expected because a worker's condition seems to deteriorate as a function of the amount of flight performed. 相似文献

We describe conceptual and simulation models of land use within the intertidal zone of the Guayas River estuary to quantify the contribution of mangrove wetlands to maintaining environmental quality of a tropical estuary. The goal of this exercise is to demonstrate the important consideration of ecological constraints in determining economic and management decisions; and how modeling can be used to quantify impacts of land use such as loss of mangrove wetlands on environmental quality. Our conceptual model treats solar energy, river flow, and tides as forcing functions that control the properties of estuarine ecosystems, but also describes market forces and cultural policies as constraints on properties of socioeconomic systems. The controversy of coastal resource management in Ecuador centers around the relative impacts of shrimp pond construction and management as negative feedbacks to the environmental quality of the Guayas River estuary. Unique oceanographic processes and land use changes contribute to complex issues of water and habitat quality in this tropical estuary, the largest estuarine complex on the Pacific coast of South America. A dynamic box model was developed for the estuary and calibrated with data collected from a 14 month survey of water quality parameters throughout the estuary. Scenarios included conversion of mangroves to shrimp ponds in three regions of the estuary, and the construction of a dam by varying three different rates of river discharge at 100, 50 and 10% of 1989 base flow. Good water quality is maintained by the low residence time of water in the estuary (11 d) because of seasonally high river flow and tidal exchange. With a 90% reduction of mangrove forests in the estuary caused by shrimp pond construction, total nitrogen concentrations increased 5 fold. However, as river discharge decreased to 10%, the same construction caused a 60 fold increase in nitrogen concentrations to 250 μM. Increases in nitrogen concentrations were higher in the upper estuary region, with much less change in the lower estuary. Thus the sensitivity of environmental quality to changes in land use in the intertidal and upland zone are linked to the hydrography of the estuary and is site specific. In the future, the combinations of these ecological models together with economic analyses of the goods and services of mangroves may provide better techniques to evaluate the economic impacts of specific coastal zone management decisions. 相似文献

The landfill of Morelia, the capital city of the state of Michoacán in central-western Mexico, is located 12 km west of the city and has operated since 1997 without a structure engineered and designed to control the generation in situ of biogas and leachates. A geological evaluation of the landfill site is presented in this paper. The results indicate that the site lacks ideal impermeable subsurface strata. The subsurface strata consist of highly fractured basaltic lava flows (east-west fault and fracture system trend) and sand-size cineritic material with high permeability and porosity. Geochemical analysis of groundwater from Morelia's municipal aquifer shows a high concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As) exceeding the Mexican environmental regulations, along with the presence of some organic pollutants (phenols). Analyses of samples of the landfill's permanent leachate ponds show very high concentrations of the same contaminants. Samples were taken from the leachate pond and from nearby water-wells during the rainy season (summer 1997) and the dry season (spring 1997, 1998, and 1999). In all cases, the concentration of contaminants registered exceeded the standards for drinking water of the World Health Organization (American Public Health Association, American Water Works Association, and Water Pollution Control Federation, 2000). To understand the relative importance of biological versus physicochemical control over biomineralization, we have tested
if the chemical composition of the medium (i.e., the Mg/Ca ratio) can change the mineralogy of mollusk shells. The shells
of mollusks are made of calcite and/or aragonite, which are by far the most common CaCO3 polymorphs. Several species of bivalves with predominantly calcitic shells have been cultivated in artificial seawater with
a Mg/Ca molar ratio within the range of 8.3–9.2, well above the present value for seawater (5.2). Four out of six species
used (the scallop Chlamys varia, the oyster Ostrea edulis, the saddle oyster Anomia ephippium and the mussel Mytilus edulis) survived long enough to secrete significant amounts of calcium carbonate. The deposits (sometimes extensive) formed on the
interior shell surfaces were predominantly aragonitic. Three individuals of C. varia also increased their length by adding new shell at the margin. Contrary to the internal shell deposits, these margins were
high-Mg calcite. This implies that the marginal mantle is able to exert a more strict control on the secreted mineral phase
than the mantle facing the internal shell surface. This is the first report on an in vivo experimentally forced switch in
bivalve shell mineralogy, from calcite to aragonite due to a change in water chemistry. 相似文献

ABSTRACTImpacts of cattle production vary among different production systems, but data on their distribution is scarce for most world regions. In this work, we combine datasets on cattle vaccination locations and land cover in a regression framework to define and map major cattle production systems in the Argentinean Dry Chaco. We also explore how cattle occurrence relates to spatial determinants. Results indicate that the region harbors about 5.5 million heads. Cattle density was mainly described by the share of pasture (69.9%), cropland (28.1%) and aridity (23.8%). We identified 12-major cattle production systems: six cow-calf, three whole-cycle, and three fattening systems. Of these, four systems had high woodland cover (>85%). Data generated is available in a website. Understanding the distribution of cattle production systems is important to assess the environmental impacts of beef production at broad scales. Integrating vaccination data with land-cover information provides a promising avenue to identify livestock systems. 相似文献

This paper examines the challenge of achieving a balance between the implementation of centrally designed pro-poor policies
and the decentralization of responsibilities to local governments in many African countries. It analyzes the implementation
of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program in Tanzania. Key mechanisms for planning and allocating resources are analyzed
at ministry, district, and village levels. Results show that a mixture of policy incoherencies, technical shortcomings and
political influence determine that only a small proportion of funds reaches the underserved areas. We argue that a greater
connection between the bottom-up and top-down planning mechanisms, and a sharp increase of downwards accountability are needed
before decentralized decision-making result in better resources allocation. Meanwhile a bigger intervention from central government
