Although 2,3,7,8-TCDD has been found to be extremely toxic to a variety of laboratory aminals, human epidemiology studies, where exposure to 2,3,7,8-TCDD has been less well characterized than in animal toxicologic studies, have been less conclusive in characterizing the extent of toxicity. In order to determine whether the newly refined techniques of human adipose tissue biopsy including isomer specific and sensitive measurement of PCDDs and PCDFs might be able to assist in finding populations within the same country with high and low levels of dioxins, adipose tissue samples were taken and levels analyzed from the north and south of Vietnam. It seemed reasonable, based on previous work, that high levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD might still be found in adipose tissue in selected patients living in areas sprayed with Agent Orange and other 2,3,7,8-TCDD containing herbicides, and that lower levels should be found in patients not exposed to 2,3,7,8-TCDD from herbicides or other sources, such as persons who had always resided in the north of Vietnam. Of 9 specimens from patients hospitalized in Hanoi who had never been south, none had detectable adipose tissue levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD at a detection limit of 2 or 3 ppt on a wet weight basis. Of 15 specimens from Ho Chi Minh City hospitalized patients the mean of positive specimens (12 of 15) was 28 on a lipid basis. The mean of the positive values from the south is about 2 to 3 times higher than found in the North American Continent control patients where the mean is about 6–10 ppt and much higher than in the north of Vietnam. In the northern specimens, the levels were non-detectable with a sensitivity of between 2 and 3 ppt. Other PCDD and PCDF isomers not found in Agent Orange, the penta- through octachlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and dibenzofurans, were similar in isomer type and quantity in the south of Vietnam to what we previously reported in North America. Adipose tissue from the north of Vietnam contained the lowest levels of four through eight chlorinated dioxins and furans thus far reported. The initial data suggests that populations exist in the south of Vietnam with elevated levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD at the present time, fourteen years after the last known 2,3,7,8-TCDD (Agent Orange) application, superimposed on a preexisting body burden of dioxins and dibenzofurans from sources other than Agent Orange such as technical grade pentachlorophenol or products of incineration contaminated with higher chlorinated PCDDs or PCDFs. In light of the recent finding that unexpected levels of PCDDs and PCDFs exist in the general adult population of industrialized countries, ca. 1,000 to 1,200 ppt, wet weight of total dioxin and furan isomers in adipose tissues, it seems reasonable that the extent of human toxicity of dioxins may be more readily characterized in Vietnam than in industrialized countries. Because 2,3,7,8-TCDD was applied in 1962–1970, although not yet cleaned up, the levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD in the environment, the food chain, and in humans, would be expected to decrease with time. Therefore, if studies are not initiated in a timely fashion, the opportunity to better characterize the extent of the toxicity of TCDD to humans as well as the persistence of TCDD in the environment in Vietnam may be lost. 相似文献

Genotype-specific growth of hard clams (genus Mercenaria) in a hybrid zone: variation among habitats
Shell growth rate is an important component of fitness in bivalve molluscs. Using the parameter computed from the von Bertalanffy growth equation, we quantitatively compared rates of annual shell grwoth among the hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria, M. campechiensis, and their hybrids sampled from a variety of habitats in the Indian River lagoon, Florida, USA, a zone of species overlap and natural hybridization. Our results indicate that the classical paradigm describing hard clam growth, in which growth rate is fastest in M. campechiensis, intermediate in hybrids, and slowest in M. mercenaria is not supported in the Indian River lagoon. Instead, M. campechiensis has a growth advantage in deep-water habitats in the northern section of our study area. In the central and southern sections of our study area, hybrids have a growth advantage over M. mercenaria in shallow-water habitats, but M. mercenaria has a growth advantage over hybrids in deep-water habitats. In all other sampled habitats, either growth rate among genotype classes is equal, or M. mercenaria has a growth advantage. This complex relationship between genotype and habitat-specific growth provides a mechanism for selection to act on hard clams in the Indian River. 相似文献

In the present study, we investigated the effects of two bulking materials, Sphagnum peat and pine wood chips, on the early stages of biowaste composting in two pilot-scale processes. Emphasis was placed on studying the formation conditions of malodorous compost gases in the initial phases of the processes. The results showed that gas emission leaving an open windrow and a closed drum composting system contained elevated concentrations of fermentative microbial metabolites when acid Sphagnum peat (pH 3.2) was used as a bulking material. Moreover, the gas emission of the peat amended drum composter contained a high concentration of odour (up to 450,000 ou m?3 of air). The highest odour values in the outlet gas of peat amended composts coincided with the elevated concentrations of volatile organic compounds such as acetoin and buthanedion. We conclude that the acidifying qualities of composting substrates or bulking material may intensify odour emission from biowaste composts and prolong the early stages of the composting process. 相似文献

Under typical atmospheric conditions, sulfuric acid and water vapors are likely most important species in the nucleation of new aerosol particles. The main source of H2SO4 in the atmosphere is oxidation of SO2. Hence, an understanding of the subsequent chemical reactions followed by aerosol-particles formation is of fundamental importance. Here we analyze the results of laboratory experiments in Svensmark et al. (2007) in which (i) the formation of neutral aerosol particles was observed at reported sulfuric acid concentrations well below the range where the binary homogeneous nucleation in a mixture of H2SO4–H2O vapors could be important and (ii) an electron catalytic effect on particle nucleation was suggested as an explanation of the experimental results and as a potential source of aerosol-particles formation in the Earth's atmosphere. In the article we give an interpretation of these experimental data based on a known mechanism of the neutral particles formation via ion-induced nucleation followed by recombination of charged clusters. The main results of our investigation are the following: (i) the observed neutral particles were likely formed via the recombination of ion clusters; (ii) the phenomena of electron photodetachment from ion clusters under UV radiation was improbable in conditions of this experiment and likely unrealized for typical negative ion clusters found in the Earth's atmosphere. In total, these experiments and model investigations show that far more and specially directed laboratory experiments are needed to clarify the ways by which cosmic rays and solar radiation may link to the Earth's climate. 相似文献

Abstract: The calibration of basin‐scale hydrologic models consists of adjusting parameters such that simulated values closely match observed values. However, due to inevitable inaccuracies in models and model inputs, simulated response hydrographs for multiyear calibrations will not be perfectly synchronized with observed response hydrographs at the daily time step. An analytically derived formula suggests that when timing errors are significant, traditional calibration approaches may generally underestimate the total event‐flow volume. An event‐adaptive time series is developed and incorporated into the Nash‐Sutcliffe Efficiency objective function to diagnose the potential impact of event‐flow synchronization errors. Test sites are the 50 km2 Subwatershed I of the Little River Experimental Watershed (LREWswI) in southeastern Georgia, and the 610 km2 Little Washita River Experimental Watershed (LWREW) in southwestern Oklahoma, with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool used as the hydrologic model. Results suggest that simulated surface runoff generation is 55% less for LREWswI when the daily time series is used compared with when the event‐adaptive technique is used. Event‐flow generation may also be underestimated for LWREW, but to a lesser extent than it may be for LREWswI, due to a larger portion of the event flow being lateral flow. 相似文献

Deterrent compounds are important in influencing the food selection of many phytophagous insects. Plants containing deterrents,
such as alkaloids, are generally unfavored and typically avoided by many polyphagous lepidopteran species, including the gypsy
moth Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae). We tested the deterrent effects of eight alkaloids using two-choice feeding bioassays.
Each alkaloid was applied at biologically relevant concentrations to glass fiber disks and leaf disks from red oak trees (Quercus rubra) (L.), a plant species highly favored by these larvae. All eight alkaloids tested on glass fiber disks were deterrent to
varying degrees. When these alkaloids were applied to leaf disks, only seven were still deterrent. Of these seven, five were
less deterrent on leaf disks compared with glass fiber disks, indicating that their potency was dramatically reduced when
they were applied to leaf disks. The reduction in deterrency may be attributed to the phagostimulatory effect of red oak leaves
in suppressing the negative deterrent effect of these alkaloids, suggesting that individual alkaloids may confer context-dependent
deterrent effects in plants in which they occur. This study provides novel insights into the feeding behavioral responses
of insect larvae, such as L. dispar, to selected deterrent alkaloids when applied to natural vs artificial substrates and has the potential to suggest deterrent

Through the application of cognitive appraisal theory, this study unifies the emergent themes of studying justice in relation to organizational context, as well as justice in relation to employee feelings of psychological distress. A sample of 677 employees from 72 organizations was used to test hypotheses related to justice, job control, mechanistic structure, and employee feelings of anxiety and depression. We found procedural justice, within a primary appraisal role, to be a highly effective tool for minimizing psychological distress. In combination with both distributive justice as well as a mechanistic structure, procedural justice can help to minimize feelings of anxiety and depression, but in different manners for each variable. Further, a strong influence of job control upon both procedural justice and, ultimately, depression and anxiety highlighted its role as a perceived means for avoiding or minimizing the harm of a potential stressor.
