Analysis of female sex pheromone components and subsequent field trap experiments demonstrated that the bombycid moth Trilocha varians uses a mixture of (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienal (bombykal) and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienyl acetate (bombykyl acetate) as a sex pheromone. Both of these components are derivatives of (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol (bombykol), the sex pheromone of the domesticated silkmoth Bombyx mori. This finding prompted us to compare the antennal and behavioral responses of T. varians and B. mori to bombykol, bombykal, and bombykyl acetate in detail. The antennae of T. varians males responded to bombykal and bombykyl acetate but not to bombykol, and males were attracted only when lures contained
both bombykal and bombykyl acetate. In contrast, the antennae of B. mori males responded to all the three components. Behavioral analysis showed that B. mori males responded to neither bombykal nor bombykyl acetate. Meanwhile, the wing fluttering response of B. mori males to bombykol was strongly inhibited by bombykal and bombykyl acetate, thereby indicating that bombykal and bombykyl
acetate act as behavioral antagonists for B. mori males. T. varians would serve as a reference species for B. mori in future investigations into the molecular mechanisms underlying the evolution of sex pheromone communication systems in

Atmospheric Aluminum measured in northern Taiwan from 2003 to 2006 is used as a dust tracer, from which dust concentrations are derived, and major Asian dust events are determined. The source locations for the major dust events are traced back and identified, and the processes leading to the southeastward transport of Asian dust is investigated. The derived dust concentrations are compared to the local PM10 (particle with size less than 10 μm) concentrations, and the impacts of Asian dust on the air quality of Taiwan are quantified.According to the backward trajectory and dust observation analyses, most of the southeastward transport of major Asian dust events originate from Mongolia and Inner Mongolia in northern China, and only one out of 16 events is generated from western China. Modeling studies and weather analyses of dust events suggest that the southeastward transport of Asian dust is usually generated behind a surface front and transported downwind behind the associated upper level trough. The associated upper level trough is usually deep, in which the northwesterly wind behind the trough favors the southeastward transport of dust to lower latitudes. Dust transported to Taipei generally occur during periods of large-scale subsidence.Asian dust contributes about 15 μg m?3 of aerosol particles to northern Taiwan during winter monsoon, which accounts for about 24–30% of the PM10 concentrations to the northern Taiwan. The contributions of Asian dust are raised pronouncedly to about 60–70% during major dust events. The impacts of Asian dust on Taiwan's air quality are most substantial in December. The Asian dust impacts decrease in other months, but still remain at around 30% in the late winter to early spring. 相似文献

In this study, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) concentrations and depositions in ambient air, water column and sediment were measured at a coupled reservoir-watershed system in northern Taiwan. The atmospheric PCDD/F concentration measured in the vicinity of the reservoir ranged from 4.9 to 39 fg I-TEQ m−3 and the Asian dust storm in February accounted for the peak value, which corresponded to a total suspended particle concentration of 128 μg m−3. The atmospheric PCDD/F deposition ranged from 1.4 to 19 pg I-TEQ m−2 d−1, with higher deposition occurring during winter and spring (long-range transport events). During summer, when atmospheric deposition is lower, consecutive tropical cyclones (typhoons) bring heavy rainfall that enhances soil erosion and creates turbidity-driven intermediate flow. This results in significantly higher PCDD/F deposition in water column of the reservoir at 70 m water depth (179 pg I-TEQ m−2 d−1) than at 20 m (21 pg I-TEQ m−2 d−1) during typhoon event. The accumulation rate of PCDD/Fs (9.1 ng I-TEQ m−2 y−1) in the reservoir sediments (depth: 0-2 cm) was consistent with PCDD/F deposition obtained from water column (6.1 and 8.3 ng I-TEQ m−2 y−1); however, it is significantly higher when compared to the atmospheric deposition (2.0 ng I-TEQ m−2 y−1). Based on the mass balance between the measurements of atmospheric deposition and sinking particles in water column, around 54-74% of PCDD/F inputs into the reservoir were contributed by the catchment erosion during normal period. However, the PCDD/F input contributed by the enhanced catchment erosion significantly increased to 90% during intensive typhoon events. 相似文献

Aerobiological studies in commuting trains in northern Taiwan were carried out from August, 2007 until July, 2008. Two six-stage (>7 μm, 4.7~7 μm, 3.3~4.7 μm, 2.1~3.3 μm, 1.1~2.1 μm, 0.65~1.1 μm) cascade impactors of 400 orifices were used to collect viable bacteria and fungi, respectively. The levels of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), formaldehyde (HCHO), temperature, and relative humidity in the commuting trains were also recorded during the sampling period. Results show that bacterial concentrations ranged from 25 to 1530 CFU m?3, and averaged 417 CFU m?3. The fungal concentrations ranged from 45 to 1906 CFU m?3, and averaged 413 CFU m?3. Additionally, the highest fractions occurred in the fifth stage (1.1~2.1 μm) for both bacteria and fungi. The respirable fractions, Rb and Rf, for bacteria and fungi were 62.8% and 81.4%, respectively, which are higher than those in other studies. Furthermore, the bacterial concentration reached its highest level in autumn, and its lowest level in winter. However, the fungal concentration was highest in spring and lowest in winter. Though the total bacterial or fungal concentration did not exceed the recommendation standard in Taiwan, the relatively high respirable fraction in commuting trains probably implies a higher adverse health risk for sensitive commuters. This study further conducted multiple regression analysis to determine the relationship of various stage fractions of airborne bacteria and fungi with indoor air pollutants (CO and HCHO) and environmental parameters (CO2, temperature, and relative humidity). The correlation coefficients of multiple regression analysis for total bacteria and fungi concentrations with indoor air pollutants and environmental parameters were 0.707 (p < 0.00376) and 0.612 (p < 0.00471), respectively. There are currently no formally regulated laws for indoor air quality (IAQ) in Taiwan, and this preliminary study can provide references to the Taiwan government on IAQ management. 相似文献

Sizing a new reservoir is a challenging task, which normally requires simultaneously a cost-effective, risk-informed, and
forward-looking decision analysis with respect to basin-wide hydrological features, environmental quality, and biological
integrity. Such a sustainable planning approach takes into account the global trend to balance the needs of economic growth,
ecological conservation, and environmental protection. To achieve the goal of sustainability, emphasis in this paper was placed
upon the correlation of three physical, chemical, and biological indices, including the dissolved oxygen (DO), the 5-day biochemical
oxygen demand (BOD5), and the index of biotic integrity (IBI), for the optimal planning of a reservoir in a river basin. This new methodological
paradigm has been employed for sizing an off-stream reservoir in the Hou-Lung River Basin, central Taiwan. The internal linkage
between the water quality parameters (DO and BOD5) and the IBI levels further enables us to formulate a special biotic integrity constraint which reflects fish community attributes
to suit a relatively low-density and unspecialized freshwater fish fauna in response to the changing water quality conditions
in the river basin. The tradeoffs among economic, environmental, and ecological aspects for reservoir sizing can then be based
on the river flow patterns, the water demand, the water quality standards, and the anticipated biological integrity in some
critical river reaches. Findings in a preliminary case study suggest that an optimal pumping scheme may be smoothly maintained

A 60-m flux tower was built on a 2100 m mountain for the measurement of the air pollutant concentration and the evaluation of dry deposition velocity in Central Taiwan. The tower was constructed in an evergreen broadleaf forest, which is the dominant species of forest in the world. Multiple-level SO2 concentrations and meteorological variables at the site were measured from February to April 2008. The results showed that the mean dry deposition velocities of SO2 were 0.61 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.27 cm s?1 during nighttime. From the comparison of the monthly data, a tendency was observed that the dry deposition velocity increases with LAI and solar radiation. Furthermore, it was observed that the deposition velocity was larger over wet canopy than over dry canopy, and that higher deposition velocities in the wet season were mainly caused by non-stomatal uptake of wet canopy. Over wet canopy, the mean dry deposition velocities of SO2 were estimated to be 0.83 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.47 cm s?1 during nighttime; and 0.44 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.19 cm s?1 during nighttime over dry canopy. There is good agreement between the results of this study and those in other studies and the predictions of Zhang et al. (2003a). The medians (geometric means) of derived rc during daytime are 233 (266) m s?1 over dry canopy and 147 (146) m s?1 over wet canopy. It was found that solar radiation is the critical important meteorological variable determining stomatal resistance during daytime. Treatment of a basic dye, methylene blue, by electrochemical oxidation, fly ash adsorption, and combined electrochemical oxidation-fly ash adsorption was compared. Methylene blue at 100 mg L?1 was used in this study. The toxicity was also monitored by the Vibrio fischeri light inhibition test.When electrochemical oxidation was used, 99% color and 84% COD were removed from the methylene blue solution in 20 min at a current density of 428 A m?2, NaCl of 1000 mg L?1, and pH0 of 7. However, the decolorized solution showed high toxicity (100% light inhibition).For fly ash adsorption, a high dose of fly ash (>20,000 mg L?1) was needed to remove methylene blue, and the Freundlich isotherm described the adsorption behavior well.In the combined electrochemical oxidation-fly ash adsorption treatment, the addition of 4000 mg L?1 fly ash effectively reduced intermediate toxicity and decreased the COD of the electrochemical oxidation-treated methylene blue solution. This study evaluates emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) caused by standing loss (L S) and working loss (L W) of three vertical fixed-roof p-xylene (p-X) liquid tanks during 1-year storage and filling operation. The annual net throughput of the tanks reached 70,446 t, resulting in 9,425 kg of p-X vapor emission including 5,046 kg of L S (53.54 %) and 4,379 kg of L W (46.46 %). The estimated L W of AP-42 displayed better agreement with the measured values of a VOC detector than the estimated L S of AP-42. The L S was best correlated with the liquid height of the tanks, while the L W was best correlated with the net throughput of the tanks. As a result, decreasing vapor space volume of the tanks and avoiding high net throughput of the tanks in a high ambient temperature period were considered as effective means to lessen VOC emission from the fixed-roof organic liquid storage tank. 相似文献

In order to increase system safety and team performance, this study aimed to develop a real-time warning model (RTWM) by assessing team response time, error rates, and mental workload. Toward this goal, the group method of data handling (GMDH) algorithm was applied to physiological indices to predict team performance. Then fuzzy logic, fuzzy inference and linguistic variable sets representing the Team Performance and Safety Index were applied to construct the RTWM. To model the RTWM, experiments were conducted on computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) in the personal computer transient analyzer (PCTRAN) simulator. The simulator and teamwork are designed to simulate the real tasks of the control room of the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) in Taiwan. In addition, important physiological parameters, the NASA-TLX questionnaire, team response time, and team error rates were collected from 39 participants. The results revealed that there was a significant positive correlation between the error rates of teamwork and the interval of event arrival time. This indicated that a pre-alarm device is necessary because vigilance decreased with time. Moreover, a predictive teamwork performance model applying the GMDH algorithm and the RTWM with a fuzzy inference system was developed in this study.
