Scleractinian symbiotic corals living in the Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean Sea) have experienced warm summers during the last decade, with temperatures rapidly increasing, within a few days, to 3–4°C above the mean value of 24°C. The effect of elevated temperatures on the photosynthetic efficiency of zooxanthellae in symbiosis with temperate corals has not been well investigated. In this study, the corals, Cladocora caespitosa and Oculina patagonica were collected in the Ligurian Sea (44°N, 9°E), maintained during 2 weeks at the mean summer temperature of 24°C and then exposed during 48 h to temperatures of 24 (control), 27, 29 and 32°C. Chlorophyll (chl) fluorescence parameters [F
v/F
m, electron transport rate (ETR), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ)] were measured using pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorimetry before, during the thermal increase, and after 1 and 7 days of recovery (corals maintained at 24°C). Zooxanthellae showed a broad tolerance to temperature increase, since their density remained unchanged and there was no significant reduction in their maximum quantum yield (F
v/F
m) or ETR up to 29°C. This temperature corresponded to a 5°C increase compared to the mean summer temperature (24°C) in the Ligurian Sea. At 32°C, there was a significant decrease in chl contents for both corals. This decrease was due to a reduction in the chl/zooxanthellae content. For C. caespitosa, there was also a decrease in ETRmax, not associated with a change in F
v/F
m or in the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ); for O. patagonica, both ETRmax and F
v/F
m significantly decreased, and NPQmax showed a significant increase. Damages to the photosystem II appeared to be reversible in both corals, since F
v/F
m values returned to normal after 1 day at 24°C. Zooxanthellae in symbiosis with the Mediterranean corals investigated can therefore be considered as resistant to short-term increases in temperature, even well above the maximum temperatures experienced by these corals in summer. 相似文献

Sessile macroepifauna was sampled at six rocky sites between 2 and 90 m depth with a number of different methods involving
both underwater photography and collection of specimens. A total of 212 species (or varieties) were identified, belonging
to seven higher taxa: poriferans (24 species), cnidarians (32), molluscs (8), serpuloidean polychaetes (33), bryozoans (90),
brachiopods (4) and ascidians (21). The combined use of a varied array of sampling methods was effective in obtaining a rich
faunal inventory. Deep and offshore sites tended to be richer in species than shallow and inshore sites. In all cases species
richness was higher at sites closest to hydrothermal vents on the sea floor. Although there are no comparable inventories
of marine sessile epifauna in the Aegean, the high number of species found, with a relatively low sampling effort in a restricted
area, indicates that the marine biodiversity of this sea is not as low as traditionally believed.

The goal of this study was to optimize the mixture of swine manure (SM) and cattle manure (CM) used in the vermicomposting process, seeking to increase the manure biodegradation rate and enhance the biomass production of both earthworms and higher plants. To achieve this goal, physico-chemical parameters were determined to assess the final compost quality after 50 days of vermicomposting. The different manure ratios used to produce the composts (C) were as follows (SM:CM, % m/m basis): C1 100:0, C2 (75:25), C3 (50:50), C4 (25:75), and C5 (0:100). In addition, the earthworm biomass and the phytoproductivity of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) plants grown in mixtures (1:1) of natural soil and the most viable vermicomposts were investigated. The C1 and C2 compost compositions were associated with high earthworm mortality rates. The C3 compost provided the highest mineral concentrations and C5 showed the highest lettuce yield (wet biomass). The results verify that stabilized cattle manure is an excellent substrate for the vermicomposting process and that fresh swine manure must be mixed with pre-stabilized cattle manure to ensure an optimized vermicomposting process, which must be controlled in terms of temperature and ammonia levels. It is concluded that small livestock farmers could add value to swine manure by applying the vermicomposting process, without the need for high investments and with a minimal requirement for management of the biodegradation process. Previous studies have shown the high sorption affinity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by cork. The aim of the present work is to go further by investigating the sorption mechanism of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (exemplified by phenanthrene) on cork and the availability of the chemical components (i.e. lignin, suberin, holocellulose and extractives) to retain phenanthrene.Two approaches were integrated to reach this objective: (1) statistical multivariate analysis to obtain correlations between the sorption capacity, measured as Koc, and the sorbent properties (i.e. polarity, acidic functional groups, %dichloromethane extractives, %ethanol and water extractives, %suberin, %lignin and %holocellulose) and (2) modeling calculations to obtain information on interaction at the molecular level.The statistical multivariate analysis demonstrated a strong and positive correlation between Koc and the lignin content as well as negative correlations between Koc and the phenolic groups and %dichloromethane extractives contents. The modeling study showed that the lignin–phenanthrene interaction is mostly hydrophobic in nature being largely determined by the π-stacking interaction between the aromatic groups of the interacting partners. This result justifies the observed correlations as dichloromethane extractives, being hydrophobic, compete with phenanthrene adsorption, whereas phenolic groups, as well as negatively charged groups, enhance the hydrophilic character of the sorbent surface, thus hindering the adsorption of phenanthrene. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Amu Darya river, one of the main water resources of Uzbekistan, shows a relevant longitudinal enrichment of soluble contents
which strongly limits the human uses of its waters. Because of the low natural run-off processes, salts and pollutants are
mainly driven to the river by the return waters used for washing and irrigating the surrounding lands. The influence of return
waters on stream quality is dramatically relevant in the lower reaches of the river where almost all the flowing waters have
been previously used for the agriculture practises. To provide analytical evidence on the potential effects of return waters
on the quality of the Amu Darya river, the paper reports and comments data on salinity and metals contents of the waters flowing
in the artificial channel network of Bukhara and in the Amu Darya river, from Bukhara up to the dam forming the Tuyamuyn Hydro
Complex (THC).
Methods A total of 15 sampling sites were selected for the analytical survey: Two sites were located on the Amu Darya river downstream
from the inflow of the return waters from Bukhara, two in the river entering in the THC, and three downstream from the dam
forming the reservoir complex. The waters entering and leaving the Bukhara agricultural area were sampled in two main collectors,
while the waters flowing in the channel system were sampled in six distinct collectors. The following parameters were considered
in the survey: pH, Oxygen, Hardness, Salinity, Conductivity, P-PO4 3–, P tot, N tot, N-NO3 2–, N-NO2 –, COD, Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe,
Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb.
Results and Discussion Salt concentrations below 1000 mg/l were measured in the Amu Darya waters upstream to Bukhara. In the drainage system, salinity
exceeds the palatability limit and reaches the maximum peak of 3200 mg/l in the outflow collector. Due to dilution effects,
salinity returns to lower values (400–700 mg/l) along the Amu Darya river downstream from Bukhara; calcium and magnesium resulted
the major constituents of the overall salinity. No serious metal contaminations were detected in the waters entering and leaving
the examined channel system. Differently, the Amu Darya waters upstream to the THC showed a relevant metal contamination,
with Cr, Ni, Fe concentrations exceeding the limits for human consumption. In the downstream sites, located in the Tuyamuyn
Hydro Complex and in the Amu Darya river flowing out from this reservoir, excluding Fe, all the examined metals showed lover
concentrations and values below the normative limits.
Conclusion The direct human consumption of the lower Amu Darya waters is strongly limited by salinity and by metal contamination. Although
the salinity of the return waters from the Bukhara drainage system results in above normal limits, no corresponding increases
were measured in the Amu Darya river downstream from the return water inflow at the time of the survey. As for the metal contamination
of the Amu Darya river, the survey revealed the presence of relevant sources of metal contamination downstream from Bukhara
external to the agricultural drainage system. This contamination resulted in reduced sedimentation processes taking place
in the limnetic zones of the Amu Darya river upstream to the dam forming the Tuyamuyn Hydro Complex.
Recommendation and Outlook To fully understand the longitudinal increase of Amu Darya salinity, an evaluation of the cumulative effects of the loads
from the main agricultural areas is required, also by using mass-balance models. As for the metals, an investigation should
be addressed to identify the anthropogenic sources of contaminations present in the lower Amu Darya region and the metal loads
