A suite of tests was conducted to evaluate and identify the cause or causes of toxicity in Passaic River sediments. Sediment toxicity was measured with three types of bioassays: a whole sediment bioassay with the marine amphipod, Ampelisca abdita, and interstitial water bioassays with A. abdita and the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fisheri (Microtox((R))). In addition, a Phase I Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) was conducted to elucidate the cause of observed toxicity. Analytical concentrations of selected residues in whole sediment and interstitial water from the five sampling stations were considered in conjunction with the conclusions drawn from the toxicity tests and Phase I TIE results. Finally, a toxic units approach was used to evaluate the predicted toxicity of measured interstitial water residue concentrations. There was a lack of toxic response in the short-term interstitial water bioassays, indicating that oxidants, soluble forms of metals, and dissolved phase neutral organics were not likely toxicants. However, there was significant toxicity indicated by the whole sediment A. abidita bioassays. After 10 days, there was complete or near complete mortality in amphipods exposed to all of the sediment samples tested. Removal of interstitial water toxicity by filtration was common to all four stations that exhibited measurable initial toxicity. The observed toxicity characteristics are consistent with particle associated neutral organics. This conclusion is supported by toxicity removal via filtration, lack of toxicity in the Microtox((R)) assays, and the fact that whole sediments were more toxic than was interstitial water. 相似文献

Prenatal diagnosis choices were reviewed in 473 women who presented for genetic counselling prior to 11 weeks' gestation for the indication of advanced maternal age. Group A consisted of 336 patients who were unaware of a possible association between chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and limb defects. Group B consisted of 137 patients who were provided this information. Fifty-one per cent of patients in group A and 45 per cent of patients in group B chose CVS. This difference was not significant by χ2 analysis (P = 0·7). Patterns of prenatal diagnosis procedure utilization from 1987 to 1992 revealed a significant reduction in CVS utilization accompanied by a corresponding increase in amniocentesis after the association between CVS and limb defects was publicized. Referrals for CVS counselling also significantly declined. However, acceptance rates did not change for those patients who received genetic counselling. First-trimester genetic counselling, including a discussion regarding a possible association between CVS and limb defects, helps patients make informed decisions concerning prenatal diagnosis options, and, in our population, resulted in no change in CVS acceptance rates. 相似文献

Sediment deposition both inside and outside of fixed-crest weirs was measured for fresh/intermediate, brackish, and saline
marsh areas in coastal Louisiana, USA. Sediment traps, collected on a weekly basis, were used to monitor short-term changes
in sediment deposition. Feldspar marker horizons were used to measure cumulative marsh accretion during the 16-week monitoring
period. Results show that for most sites less sediment is deposited in marsh behind weirs than at the control sites outside
the weirs. Patterns at each site are consistent throughout the 16 monitoring periods. At only one site was no significant
difference found. Streamside areas both inside and outside the weirs were found to have higher rates of sediment deposition
than backmarsh areas. At both marsh locations, sediment deposition rates were higher outside the weirs than inside. More sediment
was deposited in saline marshes than in brackish or fresh/intermediate areas. The vertical accretion data shows that marshes
in most areas are accreting sufficiently rapidly to keep pace with local rates of sea-level rise, except for two areas, both

This research presents the results of a qualitative study of a small sample of older adults (n = 25), age 55+ who have recently moved to an area that is rapidly changing from a tourist community into a retirement community. The study has two main research objectives: (a) to use Oswald and Wahl's heuristic meaning of home framework to explore the relationships between older adults and their homes and communities, integrating theories from environmental psychology, environmental gerontology and human geography, and (b) to discuss the empirical findings focussing on the core concepts of meaning of home and sense of belonging for new retirees to an area. Findings: For new retirees, there exists a zone between the home and community, that can be viewed as a geographic space comprised of overlapping and interwoven personal, social and physical domains. This zone between the physical house and the surrounding community can be construed as having certain elastic qualities and permeable boundaries that blur the distinctions between home and community. A focus on the micro-environment of the home dwelling and the macro-environment of the neighbourhood and community then appears relevant for understanding place attachment for these persons. This idea of the ‘home beyond the house’ – is one of the most important contributions of this research. Our results view the heuristic framework of Oswald and Wahl as a valuable tool for building understanding about the meaning of home for older adults by drawing attention to the domains themselves, and more importantly, to the interrelationships between them. Consequently, for younger in-migrants, the boundary between home and community blurs into one larger, symbolic entity experienced as ‘home’. 相似文献

It has become increasingly well documented that human activities are enhancing the greenhouse effect and altering the global
climate. Identifying strategies to mitigate atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions on the national level are therefore critical.
Fossil fuel combustion is primarily responsible for the perturbation of the global carbon cycle, although the influence of
humans extends far beyond the combustion of fossil fuels. Changes in land use arising from human activities contribute substantially
to atmospheric carbon dioxide; however, land use changes can act as a carbon dioxide sink as well. A soil carbon model was
built using STELLA to explore how soil organic carbon sequestration (SOC) varies over a range of values for key parameters
and to estimate the amount of global soil carbon sequestration from livestock waste. To obtain soil carbon sequestration estimates,
model simulations occurred for 11 different livestock types and with data for eight regions around the world. The model predicted
that between 1980 and 1995, United States soils were responsible for the sequestration of 444–602 Tg C from livestock waste.
Model simulations further predicted that during the same period, global soil carbon sequestration from livestock waste was
2,810–4,218 Tg C. Our estimates for global SOC sequestration are modest in proportion to other terrestrial carbon sinks (i.e.
forest regrowth); however, livestock waste does represent a potential for long-term soil carbon gain. SOC generated from livestock
waste is another example of how human activities and land use changes are altering soil processes around the world.
