Junctional epidermolysis bullosa, Herlitz variant (junctional EB-Herlitz) is a lethal autosomal recessive skin disorder currently amenable to prenatal diagnosis only by direct analysis of fetal skin. However, elevated levels of alpha-fetoprotein, as well as the presence of acetylcholinesterase in amniotic fluid, have been associated with other severe fetal genodermatoses. Fetal skin samplings were performed in ten pregnancies at risk for fetal junctional EB-Herlitz, with three fetuses affected on the basis of electron microscopic detection of blisters within the lamina lucida and abnormal hemidesmosomes. In neither affected nor unaffected pregnancies were maternal serum or amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein levels elevated. Moreover, alphafetoprotein levels in both maternal serum and amniotic fluid were not statistically different comparing affected and unaffected fetuses. Acetylcholinesterase was not present in the amniotic fluid samples of the three affected pregnancies. Unlike other severe fetal genodermatoses, neither alpha-fetoprotein nor acetylcholinesterase was predictive of junctional EB-Herlitz. 相似文献

To determine the mobility of colloids (0.001–0.45 μm) and suspended particles (> 0.45 μm) in granite fractures, laboratory particle-migration and conservative tracer studies have been carried out in a natural fracture within a large granite block, with overall dimensions of 83×90×60 cm. Flow fields within this horizontal fracture were controlled through a set of 9 boreholes drilled orthogonally to the fracture. Laboratory experiments were performed using a range of average water velocities which contained values low enough to closely approximate the natural flow velocities of < 2 m yr−1 in plutonic rocks of the Canadian Shield. The particles used had diameters between 0.02 and 22 μm, and included latex spheres, glass spheres and colloidal silica. Migration experiments were carried out with a filtered groundwater, ionic strength of 0.01 mol kg−1, obtained from a granite fracture within the Whiteshell Research Area of Manitoba. Flushing experiments showed that suspended particles as large as 40 μm could be mobilized from the fracture surface. The mobility of suspended particles was significantly less than that of colloids. However, within the size range of colloids used in these studies (0.022–0.090 μm), colloid size did not affect colloid migration. Although, in general, colloids eluted ahead of the conservative tracer, colloid mobility was significantly reduced when the average groundwater velocity dropped below between 32 and 240 m yr−1. ABSTRACT: Ceramic atmometers were tested to determine their usefulness for measuring evaporation in water resources applications. Field experiments were used to evaluate the precision, responsiveness to a range of potential evaporation conditions in a forested catchment, and interpretation of water loss of Bellani plate atmometers. The experiments, conducted from April to October in a warm, humid climate in the southeastern United States, indicate that atmometers can be reliable monitoring instruments for estimating potential evaporation. The small size, portability, low internal thermal mass, low cost, and ability to integrate the effect of radiation, air temperature, humidity and windspeed into one direct measurement of potential evaporation, make atmometers a useful instrument for certain water resources applications. 相似文献

Abstract: The silvery gibbon ( Hylobates moloch ), endemic to the island of Java, relies on closed-canopy, lowland evergreen forest for its survival. Because Java has lost over 91% of its original forest, silvery gibbons currently occupy small, isolated forest fragments and are threatened with extinction. To contribute to a comprehensive conservation strategy for this species, we analyzed the mtDNA control region of 31 silvery gibbons representing most remaining populations. Our results suggest the presence of at least two genetically differentiated lineages: a "western" lineage, represented by the largest remaining natural population in Gunung Halimun National Park and a "central" lineage, consisting of smaller, more isolated populations in and around the Gunung Masigit/Simpang/Tilu complex, Gunung Gede/Pangrango, and Gunung Slamet. These two lineages, at a minimum, represent different management units that should, except in the most dire circumstances, be managed separately. 相似文献

AbstractGreenhouses are enclosed structures which have various characteristics that enhance crop productivity, but the implications for workers’ pesticide exposure and uptake are not well understood. A narrative literature review was conducted to explore the mechanism/s of interactions between greenhouse characteristics and occupational pesticide exposure. Using a “work”, “worker” and “workplace” conceptual framework, the greenhouse environment (hot and humid microclimate, limited space and dense crop arrangements) combines with work characteristics (high work and pesticide use intensity, multi-tasking, predominantly manual spraying techniques and quick reentry to treated farms) to potentially increase occupational pesticide exposure, compared with open field farming. Greenhouse environments, are variable but have been shown to influence pesticide availability, route, pathways and frequency of exposure, deposition and distribution on a worker’s body as well as use and performance of exposure control methods. Training programs can emphasize the differences in exposure potential between greenhouse and open field farming. Development of tailored guidelines for exposure control strategies to better suit the level of uniqueness of greenhouse agriculture seems warranted. 相似文献

The relationship between a large number of mine and mine worker characteristics and injury severity was examined using multiple regression techniques. The study was based on data extracted from the New South Wales (N.S.W.) Joint Coal Board's computer based accident/incident reporting system describing 21,372 non-fatal, lost-time injurious incidents that occurred in the N.S.W. underground coal mining industry during the 4 year period from 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1990. The number of days lost as a result of an injurious incident was the best available proxy measure of injury severity. Over the study period, the number of days lost per 100,000 tonnes of raw coal production declined by 73%. Over the same period, injurious incidents involving more than 20 days off work, which constituted only 16% of all injurious incidents in underground mines, resulted in 75% of the total days lost for the whole N.S.W. underground coal mining industry. Factors that had practical importance and that were significantly associated with injury severity included mine worker's age, part of the body injured, type of accident, agency of accident, and mine worker activity. Factors not important or not significant in their relationship with injury severity were: time into shift, previous hours worked, mine location of incident, occupation, work experience, frequency of task, shift, and mining region. This study suggests that factors related to the susceptibility of a mine worker's body tissue to damage or repair, and factors related to the concentration of energy on the mine worker by vehicle and environmental characteristics are important determinants of injury severity. 相似文献

Methods for determining individual exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC) during normal daily activities were field tested on university student volunteers in Texas and North Carolina. The equipment tested included a personal monitor employing Tenax GC® to collect organic vapors for later analysis by GC-MS, and a specially designed spirometer for collecting samples of expired human breath on duplicate Tenax cartridges. The personal monitor and spirometer proved feasible for collecting abundant quantitative data on most of the 15 target organics. Air exposures to many VOC varied widely, sometimes over three orders of magnitude, among students on the same campus who had been monitored over the same time period and day. A log-linear relationship between breathing-zone air exposures and concentrations in exhaled breath was suggested for three chemicals: tetrachloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and vinylidene chloride. Air was the main route of exposure for all target compounds except the two trihalomethanes (chloroform and bromodichloromethane), which were transmitted mainly through water. Estimated total daily intake through air and water of the target organics ranged from 0.3 to 12.6 mg, with 1,1,1-trichloroethane at the highest concentrations in both geographic areas. 相似文献
