Workers of the Asian hive bee, Apis cerana, are shown to have relatively high rates of worker ovary activation. In colonies with an active queen and brood nest, 1-5% of workers have eggs in their ovarioles. When A. cerana colonies are dequeened, workers rapidly activate their ovaries. After 4 days 15% have activated ovaries and after 6 days, 40%. A cerana police worker-laid eggs in the same way that A. florea and A. mellifera do, but are perhaps slightly more tolerant of worker-laid eggs than the other species. Nevertheless, no worker's sons were detected in a sample of 652 pupal males sampled from 4 queenright colonies. A cerana continue to police worker-laid eggs, even after worker oviposition has commenced in a queenless colony. 相似文献

The study aimed to quantitate the uptake by beef cattle of organochlorine pesticides in from soil. Although such uptake is known to occur, uptake rates have not been accurately measured for these animals and cannot be inferred from data obtained with dairy cattle. In this study, cattle received a diet, of a standard feedlot ration supplemented with organochlorine-pesticide (aldrin?+?dieldrin) contaminated soil. The levels of pesticides in the feed would approximate uptake through normal grazing. Samples of the subcutaneous fat were removed periodically and analysed for pesticide content. Uptake of dieldrin (but not other pesticides present in the soil) was rapid and substantial. Uptake from sandy soils was more efficient than that from clay soils. The experiment was terminated after 8 weeks, because of the high levels of dieldrin in the tissues. Depuration of the accumulated pesticides was a slow and complex process, requiring a longer period than accumulation. 相似文献

Conventional methods of sampling groundwater in Chalk aquifers sample the mobile water in the fissures only and not the non-mobile water held in the microporous matrix. However, the microporous matrix can play an important role in modifying groundwater quality by attenuating contaminant migration through diffusion exchange and, in the long term, by acting as a reservoir for contaminant retention.A method for extracting and analysing chalk pore waters for chlorinated solvents has been developed. Chalk pore water-depth profiles at the site of a spillage of tetrachloroethene demonstrated that the immiscible phase of the solvent had migrated to depths of 50 m, producing solvent concentrations in the matrix pore waters of up to 40,000 μg L−1.In addition, the pore water-depth profile indicated that the immiscible phase had ponded upon a less permeable horizon within the Chalk aquifer at shallow depths. 相似文献
