An Automated Preconcentration Sampler (APS) was developed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and Carleton University for the determination of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in drinking water. The APS employs a two-stage particulate filtration system followed by an XAD-2 resin column. Field and laboratory testing of the APS is required to validate the device before it is put into regular service.The capacity of the APS filtration system is 30 L for a 4 Formazin Turbidity Unit (FTU) input water turbidity and greater than 50 L for a typical treated water. Flushing of a clean XAD-2 resin column with 200 L of spiked water showed that the optimum flowrate in terms of spike breakthrough is equal to three times the resin bed volume per minute. This flowrate is used for APS operation. Testing also showed that no spike breakthrough occurred after 200 L of clean water was flushed through a spiked XAD-2 resin column at flowrates in excess of the APS operating flowrate. Spike testing was also carried out on the filters and results are pending. An analytical comparison between the present MOE sampling and analytical procedure and the proposed APS sampling and analytical procedure using a PCDD/PCDF source water is planned. 相似文献

To better understand the affect of different levels of EMF on one’s brain activity, the Hodgkin–Huxley model has been used
to describe the generation of an active potential in the nerve cell membrane. The theoretical calculations have shown that
by the simultaneous affect of both passing an electrical potential and external very low frequency AC, one’s excitation pulses
may be suppressed beginning with a certain level of external current. The level of this current depends on the frequency.
It is postulated that to eliminate this suppression, the brain increases its normal level relatively to the lower limit. It
is also postulated that the brain “tunes up” in the presence of external AC, by increasing the amplitude of its own excitation
signals so that suppression does not occur. It is possible that this “tuning” process lasts some time after removing the external

ABSTRACTThe study was aimed at the migration and transformation of lead compounds in the rhizosphere, its accumulation in plants under the influence of the rhizosphere bacteria. For experiment, soil samples of the technogenous ecosystem contaminated differently by lead have been selected for plant growing. The samples were subdivided into control soil and the soil, inoculated by Azotobacter and Bacillus rhizobacteria. Lead concentrations have been analysed in easily exchangeable, carbonate, organic and Fe hydroxide-associated fractions as well in chelate forms and fulvic and humic acids. In soils, inoculated by rhizobacteria, there is an increased mobilisation of lead due to its decrease in humic acids and increase in fulvic acids. On technogenic soil, rhizobacteria initiate the immobilisation of Fe-hydroxide-bound, chelate-bound lead in the rhizosphere as well as lead occurring in roots. As a results, there is a decreased lead uptake by upper parts of plants. There is also a correlation between increasing soil alkalinity and increasing Pb accumulation in the roots of plants. The results of the experiment helped to understand more about the mechanisms of Pb compound behaviour under the influence of rhizobacteria that can be used for developing biotechnologies related to soil bioremediation and crop production. 相似文献

Conservation biology was founded on the idea that efforts to save nature depend on a scientific understanding of how it works. It sought to apply ecological principles to conservation problems. We investigated whether the relationship between these fields has changed over time through machine reading the full texts of 32,000 research articles published in 16 ecology and conservation biology journals. We examined changes in research topics in both fields and how the fields have evolved from 2000 to 2014. As conservation biology matured, its focus shifted from ecology to social and political aspects of conservation. The 2 fields diverged and now occupy distinct niches in modern science. We hypothesize this pattern resulted from increasing recognition that social, economic, and political factors are critical for successful conservation and possibly from rising skepticism about the relevance of contemporary ecological theory to practical conservation. 相似文献

This paper presents the first results of a study of B.T.V. on Tenax TA, at various flow rates of sampling, with standard isoprene gaseous mixtures whose concentration ranging from 0.7 ppbV to 4 ppbV was very similar to the concentrations found in natural atmosphere. The method used is based on the exploitation of chromatographic signals obtained from a preconcentration—thermodesorption —analysis cycle carried out on a standard isoprene mixture. The B.T.V. of isoprene on Tenax TA does not show a significant change at very low concentrations of isoprene. 相似文献

Novel terpenylnaphthoquinones were found to enhance the rate of oxygen consumption in the presence of NADH/NADH dehydrogenase in 1?:?1?v/v mixtures of 40?mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and DMSO. Initial rates of oxygen consumption increase with an increase in the half-wave reduction potentials of the quinones. The amounts of spin trapped methyl radicals in the presence of DMSO, produced through the Haber–Weiss reaction of the oxygen consumption process, and of the corresponding semiquinones, generated under anaerobic conditions, also correlate with the quinone redox potential. Since this enzymatic system is found in mitochondria, a possible pathway in the cytotoxic activity of these terpenylnaphthoquinones could be the interference or inhibition of mitochondrial respiration by NADH depletion or by mitochondrial degradation due to reactive oxygen species generation. 相似文献

Space deformation has been proposed to model space-time varying observation processes with non-stationary spatial covariance structure under the hypothesis of temporal stationarity. In real applications, however, the temporal stationarity assumption is inappropriate and unrealistic. In this work we propose a spatial-temporal model whose temporal trend is modeled through state space models and a spatially varying anisotropy is modeled through spatial deformation, under the Bayesian approach. A distinctive feature of our approach is the consideration of model uncertainty in an unified framework. Our model has a clear advantage over the ones proposed so far in the literature when the main objective of the study is to perform spatial interpolation for fixed points in time. Approximations of the posterior distributions of the model parameters are obtained via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. This allows for prediction of the process values in space and time as well as handling of missing values. Two applications are presented: the first one to model concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the eastern United States and the second one to model monthly minimum temperatures in the State of Rio de Janeiro. 相似文献

Hodgkin–Huxley model, describing generation of action potentials in axons’ membranes, has been used for appreciation of the
possible mechanisms of electromagnetic fields influence on neurons’ electrical activity. It follows from the carried calculations
that flowing through an axon of the external current pulses, which have an area of rise, an area of DC, and an area of drop,
does not influence own excitation pulses passage if periods of rise and drop are slope enough. Depending on the external current
parameters, own excitation pulses may not be influenced or may be suppressed at greater velocity of rise and drop of an external
current. Moreover, induced excitation pulses appear at definite parameters of an external current. In the case, when at passage
through an axon of an external current, own excitation pulses follow one by one (paired pulse facilitation), and the second
pulse may be suppressed if its level will not be increased additionally in comparison with the case of an external current
absence. It is possible that such increase happens “automatically” as a result of “tuning” (adaptation) of axons to the conditions

The prediction of the atmospheric concentration of ozoneand of other photochemical pollutants represents one of themajor scientific challenges in the study of urban airquality. To this aim, photochemical models are widelyapplied as support tools for regulatory purposes, but theirresults are known to be affected by several uncertainties,in boundary conditions, geographical and meteorologicaldata and the chemical composition of emission and ambientair as well. Also the mechanism selected to describe theurban chemistry may lead to large differences in the modelresults. In this work, the influence of ambient air composition onthe results of photochemical model has been studied using a simple Lagrangian trajectory model coupled with different chemical sub-models (CB-IV and a simplified version of EMEP). To this aim a parametric sensitivity study of ozone with respect to its precursors' concentration was performed withreference to the same meteorological conditions and by simulatingdifferent scenarios characterized by specific emitted pollutantsconcentration. Rather than analyzing sensitivity by changing initial composition, an analytical local sensitivity concept has been applied; this allowed evaluation the influence of initial concentration on the predicted ozone concentration andto discriminate between VOC-sensitive and NOx-sensitive kineticregimes. New lines of evidence suggest that less than 10% of neurodegenerative diseases have a strict genetic aetiology and other factors may be prevalent. Environmental exposures to potentially toxic elements appear to be a risk factor for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and sclerosis diseases. This study proposes a multidisciplinary approach combining neurosciences, psychology and environmental sciences while integrating socio-economic, neuropsychological, environmental and health data. We present the preliminary results of a neuropsychological assessment carried out in elderly residents of the industrial city of Estarreja. A battery of cognitive tests and a personal questionnaire were administered to the participants. Multivariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to identify potential relationships between the cognitive status of the participants and environmental exposure to potentially toxic elements. The results suggest a relationship between urinary PTEs levels and the incidence of cognitive disorders. They also point towards water consumption habits and profession as relevant factors of exposure. Linear regression models show that aluminium (R 2 = 38%), cadmium (R 2 = 11%) and zinc (R 2 = 6%) are good predictors of the scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination cognitive test. Median contents (µg/l) in groundwater are above admissible levels for drinking water for aluminium (371), iron (860), manganese (250), and zinc (305). While the World Health Organization does not provide health-based reference values for aluminium, results obtained from this study suggest that it may have an important role in the cognitive status of the elderly.
