Boom and bust dynamics are a prominent characteristic of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) populations. Outbreaking starfish populations damage coral communities extensively and then often disappear quickly. In contrast, Onna village, on the central west coast of Okinawa Island, Japan, has been experiencing chronically high population densities of A. planci for decades. In this study, we examined spatial and temporal population dynamics of A. planci along the coast of Onna village, using removal data gathered over 24 years by a local fisheries cooperative. The results demonstrate that A. planci populations along the Onna coast often experienced high densities prior to 2003 and that recently, populations have again been increasing drastically. Size-frequency distributions suggest multiple, successive recruitment, as one of the driving factors maintaining A. planci populations in this location. Moreover, within the Onna area, the timing of outbreak peaks varied among different locations, showing a northward progression. 相似文献

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TeCDD) was rapidly decreased by sonication in aqueous solution. The degradation efficiency was strongly influenced by ultrasonic power and reaction temperature. An initial 2,3,7,8-TeCDD concentration of 20 ng l(-1) was completely degraded within 60 min under sonochemical conditions using a 20 kHz frequency with a 150 W ultrasound power. The activation energy is 21.9 kJ/mol in the temperature range of 10-40 degrees C, suggesting a diffusion-controlled reaction. To increase the efficiency of 2,3,7,8-TeCDD treatment, degradation system combined ultrasound with Fe(III) (2 x 10(-4)mol l(-1)) and UV irradiation. Both UV and Fe(III) induced Fenton, Fenton-like and photo-Fenton reactions, leading to additional OH radicals and rapid 2,3,7,8-TeCDD removal. 相似文献

Aqueous phenol solutions containing TiO(2) nanoparticles were irradiated with ultraviolet (UV), gamma-ray and electron beams. Organic compounds were fully removed by each type of radiation in the presence of the particles. The absorbed energy of the ionizing radiation (gamma-ray and electron beams) needed for removal was much lower than that of UV photocatalysis. Phenol was decomposed by the ionizing radiation in the absence of the nanoparticles and the addition of TiO(2) had no significant effect on phenol decomposition rate. Instead, total organic carbon (TOC) removal using the ionizing radiation was accelerated drastically by TiO(2). It is suggested that TiO(2) particles affect the intermediate compounds produced through the decomposition of phenol. The amount of removed TOC per absorbed energy were compared in the absence and the presence of TiO(2) nanoparticles. Radiolysis with the nanoparticles showed consistently high rate and high efficiency of TOC removal. 相似文献

Molting and breeding entail major energetic costs for female crustaceans. However, females of some hermit crabs perform a
molt immediately prior to copulation (prenuptial molt). The evolutionary significance of the prenuptial molt was examined
in Pagurus hermit crabs, and two hypotheses were tested: (1) prenuptial molt might enhance the success of the present clutch by cleaning
the pleopods of females and thereby preventing eggs from being dislodged from the pleopods, and (2) prenuptial molt might
function for growth and increase future fecundity at the cost of energetic expenditure on the present brood. Although these
hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, our results rejected the former hypothesis and supported the latter hypothesis. All
four Pagurus species examined showed significant negative relationships between prenuptial molting and continuity of breeding; i.e., they
showed high molting frequency after they had a long rest period from breeding. Females of P. minutus increased their size through the prenuptial molt, and showed a decreased clutch size due to the molt. The number of dislodged
eggs increased if females molted in P. minutus. These results suggest that hermit crabs undergoing a prenuptial molt might not gain any clear immediate advantage of enhanced
survival of eggs in the present clutch, and that the prenuptial molt would mainly contribute to growth. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to develop methods for converting the sea bottom sediments dredged from Ago Bay into value-added recycled products. A very safe and environmentally friendly solid-state material for bioremediation was prepared using a combination of Aspergillus oryzae and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), a porous biodegradable polymer. The novel material was capable of decomposing 200 ppm formaldehyde solutions to 0 ppm within 7 days. Degradation ability was prolonged by addition of yeast extract-peptone-dextrose medium into the composite; 200 ppm formaldehyde was decomposed to 0 ppm over eight additional decomposition cycles and 100 days. We discuss the use of the Schmidt graphical method to calculate the time required to heat a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated
capacitor in the vacuum thermal recycling process to the processing temperature of 400°C, and we evaluate the results of the
heating time calculation by comparing the calculated values with the corresponding experimental values. The thermal conductivity
and specific heat of the insulating paper and the carbonized paper in the capacitor were unknown, so we determined their values
from experimental data obtained during the vacuum thermal recycling process. The capacitor element is a multilamination of
aluminum foil and insulating paper, so we used an equation for a multilayer plane wall to calculate the value of the thermal
conductivity. For the thermal conductivity and specific heat of the insulating paper impregnated with PCBs, we used values
calculated from the mass ratios and thermal conductivities and specific heats of the individual materials. In addition, the
physical properties vary according to the treatment because of the evaporation of PCBs and the carbonization of the insulating
paper, so we modified the values of the thermal conductivity, specific heat, and density at the boiling point of the PCB and
the carbonization point of the insulating paper before performing the calculations. Our calculated heating times were almost
the same as, or were above, the experimental values, so we concluded that our method can be used as a simple calculation of

Developing Asian countries have started to apply the principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR) to electronics and
electrical equipment waste (e-waste). This policy approach aims to give electronic appliance manufacturers and importers responsibility
for the collection and recycling of discarded electronic equipment. China and Thailand have drafted regulations on the recycling
of e-waste with common characteristics such as the financial responsibility of producers and subsidies for collection. Although
the proposed system is sensible, taking into account the fact that e-waste is a market-traded commodity, there are two major
difficulties in implementing EPR in developing countries. First, it may be difficult for governments to collect funds from
producers or importers if smuggled, imitation, or small shop-assembled products have a large share in the market. Second,
the system creates incentives for collectors and recyclers to over-report the amount of collected e-waste in order to gain
extra subsidies from the fund. Other policy measures such as the enforcement of pollution control regulations on informal
recyclers, the prevention of smuggling, and the protection of intellectual property rights should accompany EPR policies. 相似文献

The effects of pesticides (a herbicide and a fungicide) on the microbial community structure and their activity were analyzed in soil from four alpine pasture grasslands in Slovakia. Specifically, the effects of the herbicide, Gesagard (prometryn active ingredient), and fungicide, Fundazol 50 WP (benomyl active ingredient), on the microbial respiration activity (CO2 production), the numbers of selective microbial physiological groups (CFU.g?1) and the structure (relative abundance) of soil microbial communities [(phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)] were analyzed under controlled laboratory conditions. All treatments including the treatments with pesticides increased (statistically significantly) the production of CO2 in all fields during 21 days of incubation and posed a statistically insignificant negative influence on the numbers of the observed physiological groups of microorganisms. The significantly negative influence was evaluated only in the numbers of two physiological groups; spores of bacteria utilizing organic nitrogen and bacteria, and their spores utilizing inorganic nitrogen. A shift in the microbial composition was evident when the PLFA patterns of samples from different sites and treatments were compared by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). According to the second component PCA 2 (15.95 %) the locations were grouped into two clusters. The first one involved the Donovaly and Dubakovo sites and the second one contained the Velka Fatra and Mala Fatra locations. The PLFA composition of the soils showed important changes after the treatment with pesticides according to PCA 1 (66.06 %). Other treatments had not had a significant effect on the soil microbial community with the exception of the population of fungi. The lower relative abundance (significant effect) of Gram-positive bacteria, actinomycetes and general group of bacteria were determined in samples treated by the herbicide Gesagard. The application of fungicide Fundazol decreased (statistically significantly) the relative abundance of actinomycetes and general group of bacteria and paradoxically increased the population of fungi. 相似文献
