The increased use of pesticides by container nurseries demands that practices for removal of these potential contaminants from runoff water be examined. Constructed wetlands may be designed to clean runoff water from agricultural production sites, including container nurseries. This study evaluated 14 constructed wetlands cells (1.2 by 4.9 m or 2.4 by 4.9 m, and 30 or 45 cm deep) that collected pesticide runoff from a 465-m2 gravel bed containerized nursery in Baxter, TN. One-half of the cells were vegetated with bulrush, Scirpus validus. The cells were loaded at three rates or flows of 0.240, 0.120, and 0.060 m3 d(-1). Herbicides-simazine (Princep) [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] and metolachlor (Pennant) [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-2-methoxy-1-methylethyl-acetamide] -were applied to the gravel portion of the container nursery at rates of 4.78 and 239 kg ha(-1), respectively, 9 July 1998, and at rates of 2.39 and 1.19 kg ha(-1), respectively, 17 May 1999. Pesticides entering the wetland and wetland cell water samples were analyzed daily to determine pesticide removal. At the slower flow rate, which corresponds to lower mass loading and greater hydraulic retention times (HRTs), a greater percentage of pesticides was removed. During the 2-yr period, cells with plants removed 82.4% metolachlor and 77.1% simazine compared with cells without plants, which removed 63.2% metolachlor and 64.3% simazine. At the lowest flow rate and mass loading, wetland cells removed 90.2% metolachlor and 83% simazine. Gravel subsurface flow constructed wetlands removed most of the pesticides in runoff water with the greatest removal occurring at lower flow rates in vegetated cells.  相似文献

Effect of formulation on the behavior of 1,3-dichloropropene in soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) has been identified as a partial replacement for methyl bromide (CH3Br) in soil fumigation. 1,3-Dichloropropene is formulated for soil fumigation as Telone II (Dow AgroSciences, Indianapolis, IN) for shank application and as an emulsifiable concentrate (EC) (Telone EC or InLine; Dow AgroSciences) for drip application. This study investigated the effect of formulation on the phase partitioning, transformation rate, and volatilization of 1,3-D isomers. Air-water partitioning coefficients (K(H)) were slightly higher for Telone II than for Telone EC, presumably due to the higher apparent water solubility of the EC formulation. Sorption of 1,3-D isomers in two soils was not affected by formulation. Formulation had no significant effect on the rate of 1,3-D transformation in water or soil. In general, differences in the rate of 1,3-D transformation and phase partitioning due to formulation as Telone II or Telone EC were very small. Thus, the effect of formulation on 1,3-D fate may be ignored in transformation and phase partition of 1,3-D in water and soil. Packed soil columns without plastic tarp indicated that with relatively shallow subsurface (10 cm) drip application of Telone EC, emission of 1,3-D isomers was more rapid and produced greater maximum instantaneous flux than deeper (30 cm) shank injection of Telone II. Both application methods resulted in the same cumulative emissions for both isomers, 45% for (E)-1,3-D and approximately 50% for (Z)-1,3-D. These results suggest that for drip application of fumigants to be effective in reducing emissions, the fumigant must be applied at sufficient depths to prevent rapid volatilization from the soil surface if the water application rate does not sufficiently restrict vapor diffusion.  相似文献

Seeds of red pepper and tomato were sowed and cultivated in a soil blended with powdery poly(l-lactide) (PLLA), and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). PBS depressed the growth of the two plants significantly even at a concentration as low as 5%, whereas PLLA up to 35% affected negligibly or even boosted the growth of the two plants. pH and number of microbial cells in the soil after 80 days of cultivation were almost the same independently whether the soil was blended with the two polymers or not. In contrast, the molecular weight of PBS decreased much faster than that of PLLA. Because succinic acid and 1,4-butane diol, from which PBS was synthesized, exhibited toxicity to both plant and animal cells to retard the germination rate of young radish seeds and to deform the morphology of HeLa cells significantly [1], the monomers and the oligomers produced from the PBS degradation should have a detrimental influence on the growth of the two plants.  相似文献

This paper considers the current status of waste generation and waste treatment trends, and introduces a wide variety of policy instruments for waste minimization at every stage of economic activity in Korea, i.e., production, distribution, and consumption. At each stage, the Korean government has imposed a policy mix of direct regulations and economic incentives. These policy instruments have made definite contributions to a reduction of waste generation and an increase in the recycling rate. Despite these fruitful outcomes, there are still some shortcomings with respect to efficiency and equity. Among other aspects, this paper examines three representative economic incentives – the charge system, the volume-based-collection fee system, and the deposit–refund system – and identifies shortcomings in each. Some suggestions are made for the creation of better systems of economic incentives. However, many experts insist that this kind of piecemeal change in each policy instrument is not enough to achieve the ultimate goal of resource circulation and an environmentally friendly society, especially in Korea, which is a country with little land, a high population density, and a high economic growth rate. Eleven starch-polyethylene degradable plastic films were prepared from masterbatches from Archer Daniels Midland Inc. (ADM), EcoStar Inc. (SLS), and Fully Compounded Plastic Inc. The biodegradability of initial and 70°C heat-treated materials was determined using a pure-culture assay withStreptomyces badius 252,S. setonii 75Vi2, orS. viridosporus T7A or without bacterial culture (control). Films were treated with 10-foldS. setonii culture concentrates and compared with inactive enzyme controls. Changes in each films mechanical property, molecular weight distribution, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectrum (FT-IR) were determined, and results were evaluated for significant differences by analysis of variance. Cell mass accumulation on each film was quite pronounced. In pure-culture studies, biodegradation was demonstrated for ADM-7 and SLS-2 initial films and for ADM-6 heat-treated films, whereas after 3-week treatment with activeS. setonii culture concentrates (enzyme assay), reductions in mechanical properties and changes in FT-IR spectrum were illustrated by all the films except SLS-2. Thus the absence of biofilm formation on the film surface permitted enzymatic attack of the materials. Furthermore, inhibition of chemical oxidative degradation in the pure-culture assay was demonstrated for ADM-11, SLS-5, and SLS-10 initial materials and for ADM-4, ADM-7, SLS-8, and SLS-10 heat-treated films. These data suggest that biological and chemical degradation were directly affected by the reduction in oxygen tension on the plastic film surface due to cell mass accumulation. A composite model for the risk assessment is developed for the shallow-land burial of low-level radioactive waste. The composite model is composed of a source term, repository failure model, geosphere model, biosphere model, and finally, a dose-and-health-effects model. Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses are also carried out. In addition to the time-dependent annual release rate and dose rate for each nuclide, the ultimate risk in terms of cancer death rate is estimated.The results show that the highest value of the annual dose for the repository is less than the individual dose limit to the human body, and the calculated highest cancer death rate is much lower than other various risks. The highest value of the total annual dose appears at about 100 years after disposal, and at this time, dominant nuclides are Ni-63 and Cs-137.From the results of uncertainty and sensitivity analyses, it is found that the uncertainty associated with the public risk is strongly sensitive to the volume flow rate and irrigation rate of surface water and the retardation coefficient of geological structure.It is concluded that the methodology of simplified mathematical modeling for the risk assessment can be an effective tool for the decision making of the radioactive waste repository selection and the management of the repository system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Environmental response to acidic deposition results from movement of water through the ecosystem. As a part of the environmental studies for acidic deposition sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hydrologic classification based on regional baseflow properties was done. To obtain the amount of baseflow, a flow separation method was developed based on the division of streamflows into “baseflow” and “other” runoff sources. Because of the differences in the flow paths and exposure duration, the two components were assumed to be associated with distinct geo-chemical responses. Individual annual hydrographs were analyzed using 31 separation slopes to determine the amount of baseflow. A total of 1575 streamflow stations in the Northeastern U.S. were analyzed through the access of a long-term daily stream-flow data base. An interactive computer program was developed to obtain baseflow properties and other hydrologic characteristics of each station. The output from this analysis was used to perform cluster analysis to classify streamflow behaviors. The clustering output showed different regional boundaries than those currently used by the EPA for water quality studies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The problem of determining the optimal route to operate a network of hydrometric gauges within a given area is formulated and solved by an original heuristic traveling salesman algorithm. The algorithm used for solving the problem takes into account the variation of station service time, the eight-hour maximum working day, existence of more than one home base, and the budget constraint. The traveling salesman algorithm is used to solve the optima! assignment problem within a one-day time limit, locating a starting base, stations to visit, and the closest home base. The ending base for the previous day becomes the starting base for the next day, and the assignment procedure is repeated. The computation proceeds from day to day, until all the stations in the considered region are serviced. The solution obtained presents the optimal route to operate a network of hydrometric gauges. The optimization procedure has been applied to the Dauphin hydrometric field area in Manitoba.  相似文献

Seacliff State Beach, along the shoreline of northern Monterey Bay, California, has a well-documented history of repeated destruction and reconstruction of seawalls and park facilities. Seven times in 60 years the timber seawall has been destroyed by winter storm waves and subsequently rebuilt. The deficiencies of the wall, including (a) inadequate attachment of timber lagging to pilings, (b) inability of pilings or lagging to withstand repeated impact of waves and logs, and (c) inadequate height and internal drainage system have never been adequately addressed and each successive wall has essentially been identical to the previously destroyed wall.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Least squares regression and ARIMA models were developed from suspended sediment data for the Ausable River, Southern Ontario, Canada. A poor correlation between discharge and suspended sediment concentration results from the dynamics of the physical system, including seasonality, antecedent conditions, and hysteresis. Regression model results were significantly improved by the division of the data set into seasons and the addition of simple. but physically meaningful variables. Misleading improvements obtained from the regression of sediment load and discharge are discussed. ARIMA models provided accurate forecasts of sediment concentration on a real-time basis, but the rigorous data requirements limit their use in modeling suspended sediment concentrations in Canadian rivers.  相似文献
