Two species of blue mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis and M. trossulus, co-occur and hybridize along the Pacific coast of North America. Using a set of polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)-based genetic
markers which diagnostically identify these species, we show that they are sympatric from the Cape Mendocino region to the
Monterey Peninsula in northern and central California, USA. Mussels with hybrid genotypes were detected in all populations
sampled in the region of sympatry, and the frequency of hybrid genotypes in individual hybrid populations ranged from 13 to
44%. Significant frequencies of first-generation backcross genotypes were detected in two individual hybrid zone populations
(Berkeley and Monterey Marina) and in the hybrid zone as a whole, indicating that the potential exists for introgression between
M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus. Despite this potential, we found no evidence of advanced introgression beyond first-generation backcrosses, suggesting that
gene flow between M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus has been quite limited. The frequency of mussels with M. trossulus and hybrid genotypes declined abruptly south of Monterey Peninsula, while the frequency of mussels with M. galloprovincialis and hybrid genotypes declined precipitously north of Cape Mendocino. These abrupt genetic discontinuities indicate that this
blue mussel hybrid zone is presently positioned between two prominent coastal features and there is little, if any, export
of alleles from the hybrid zone into bordering parental populations.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) utilizing bacteria were isolated from soils of seven sites of Mathura refinery, India. Twenty-six bacterial strains with different morphotypes were isolated. These strains were acclimatized to utilize a mixture of four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., anthracene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, each at 50 mg/L concentration as sole carbon source. Out of total isolates, 15 potent isolates were subjected to 16S rDNA sequencing and identified as a member of diverse genera, i.e., Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Alcaligenes, Lysinibacillus, Brevibacterium, Serratia, and Streptomyces. Consortium of four promising isolates (Acinetobacter, Brevibacterium, Serratia, and Streptomyces) were also investigated for bioremediation of PAH mixture. This consortium was proved to be efficient PAH degrader resulting in 40–70 % degradation of PAH within 7 days. The concentrations of O3 are increasing, which may have potential adverse effects on crop yield. This paper deals with assessing the intraspecific variability of two wheat cultivars (PBW 343 and M 533) at different growth stages using open top chambers. Mean O3 concentrations were 50.2 and 53.2 ppb, and AOT40 values were 9 and 12.1 ppm h, respectively, in 2008–2009 and 2009–2010. Reproductive stage showed higher AOT40 values (6.9 and 9.2 ppm h) compared to vegetative (2.23 and 2.9 ppm h). Critical levels of a 3-month AOT 40 of 3 ppm h led to 6 % yield reduction in two wheat cultivars for two consecutive years. Variations in photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance (gs), Fv/Fm ratio, photosynthetic pigments, primary and secondary metabolites, morphological parameters, and yield attributes were measured at vegetative and reproductive stages. Reductions in number of leaves, leaf area, total biomass, root/shoot ratio, RGR, photosynthetic pigments, protein content, and Fv/Fm ratio in PBW 343 were more than M 533 at reproductive stage. Photosynthetic rate did not vary between the cultivars, but gs was higher in PBW 343 compared to M 533 under ambient O3. Higher total phenolics and peroxidase activity were recorded in M 533 at reproductive stage conferring higher resistance at latter age. Results of O3 resistance showed that M 533 was sensitive compared to PBW 343 during vegetative stage but developed more resistance at reproductive stage. PBW 343 with larger leaf area and high gs is more sensitive than M 533 with smaller leaf area and low gs. The study suggests that the sensitivity varied with plant growth stage, and the plant showing higher sensitivity during vegetative period developed more resistance during reproductive period due to higher defense mechanism. Though the yield reductions were same in both cultivars under ambient O3, the mechanism of acquiring the resistance is different between the cultivars. 相似文献

A method was developed for sulfosulfuron [(1-(2-ethylsulfonylimidazo [1,2-a] pyridin-3-ylsulfonyl)-3-(4,6-dimethoxy pyrimidin-2yl)] and its three major metabolites by HPLC utilizing photodiode array detector. The method makes use of Lichrosphere RP-8 column and acetonitrile:water:orthophosphoric acid (80:20:0.1 v/v/v) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1 ml min(-1). Using these condition sulfosulfuron, and compounds II, III and IV were resolved with distinct Rt of 2.088, 2.216, 2.302 and 2.476 minutes, respectively. Sulfosulfuron residues were analysed in soil, wheat grain and straw samples by extracting with a mixture of acetonitrile and 2 M ammonium carbonate (100 ml, 9:1, v/v) using horizontal shaker for soil and Soxhlet apparatus for wheat grain and straw samples. The extracts were cleaned up by partitioning with dichloromethane in case of soil and hexane followed by dichloromethane for plant samples. The percent recovery ranged between 71 to 75.2 for soil and 70.8 to 74.7 for plant samples. The limit of determination of sulfosulfuron was 0.25 microg g(-1). 相似文献

Scientific literature discussed various types of mixture models and models derived from maximum entropy principle using short-term wind speed data for their relative assessment. The literature on suitability of these mixture models for long-term data is rarely available. However, for correct assessment of wind power potential both wind speed and wind direction are equally important. Therefore, in this paper, both wind speed and wind direction are simultaneously analyzed using several types of mixture distribution and compared the same with conventional Weibull distribution. For wind speed and wind power density assessment, the mixture distributions such as Weibull--Weibull distribution, Gamma--Weibull distribution, Truncated Normal--Weibull distribution, Truncated Normal--Normal distribution, proposed Truncated Normal--Gamma distribution and Gamma--Gamma distribution along with MEP-distribution are compared with conventional 2-parameter Weibull distribution. Similarly, for wind direction analysis, the finite mixtures of von-Mises distribution are compared with conventional von-Mises distribution. Judgment criteria include R2, RMSE, Kolmogorov--Smirnov test and relative percentage error in wind power density. The sites selected are the three onshore locations of India, viz., Calcutta, Trivandrum, and Ahmedabad. The results show that for wind speed assessment, mixture distribution performs better than the conventional Weibull distribution for analyzing wind power density. However, location wise comparison of all mixture distribution is of prime importance. For wind direction analysis, finite mixture of two von-Mises distributions proved to be a suitable candidate for Indian climatology. 相似文献

Particulate matter (PM) is both a major driver of climate change and a source of toxicity for health. In the upper atmosphere, particulate matter modifies the earth radiation budget, cloud formation and acts as a reaction center for air pollutants. In the lower atmosphere, particulate matter changes atmospheric visibility and alters biogeochemical cycles and meteorology. Most critical effects are observed in ambient air, where particulate matter degrades human health. Here we review the sources, spatial and temporal variability, and toxicity of PM10, the particulate matter having particle sizes 10 micrometers or less in diameter, in world regions. For that we analyzed information from the world wide web and databases from government organizations after the year 2000. Findings show that PM10 is a major risk in both developed and developing countries. This risk is more severe in Asian countries compared to Europe and USA, where decreasing trends are recorded during the last two decades. Meteorological factors modify particulate matter variations at local and regional levels. PM2.5/PM10 ratio provides information of particulate matter sources under different environment conditions. Crustal matter, road traffic and combustion of fuels are major sources of particulate matter pollution. Health studies indicate that long-term exposure to particulate matter has multiple health effects in people from all age groups. Identification of possible sources and their control with regular epidemiological monitoring could decrease the impact of particulate matter pollution. 相似文献

Besides the apparent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, other important factors contributing to the renewed interest in biofuels are energy security concerns and the need of sustainable transportation fuel. Nearly 30% of the annual CO2 emissions in the U.S. come from the transportation sector and more than half of the fuel is imported. Biofuels appear to be a promising option to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and the reliance on imported oil concomitantly. The interest on (ligno) cellulosic ethanol is gaining momentum as corn-based ethanol is criticized for using agricultural outputs for fuel production. Among many lignocellulosic feedstocks, woodchips is viewed as one of the most promising feedstocks for producing liquid transportation fuels. The renewable and carbon neutral nature of the feedstocks, similar chemical and physical properties to gasoline, and the low infrastructure cost due to the availability of fuel flex vehicles and transportation networks make (ligno) cellulosic bioethanol an attractive option. An in-depth LCA of woodchips shows that harvesting and woodchips processing stage and transportation to the facility stage emit large amount of environmental pollutants compared to other life cycle stages of ethanol production. Our analysis also found that fossil fuel consumption and respiratory inorganic effects are the two most critical environmental impact categories in woodchips production. A field study was conducted to evaluate the impact of ambient ozone on mustard (Brassica campestris L. var. Kranti) plants grown under recommended and 1.5 times recommended NPK doses at a rural site of India using filtered (FCs) and non-filtered open top chambers (NFCs). Ambient mean O3 concentration varied from 41.65 to 54.2 ppb during the experiment. Plants growing in FCs showed higher photosynthetic rate at both NPK levels, but higher stomatal conductance only at recommended NPK. There were improvements in growth parameters and biomass of plants in FCs as compared to NFCs at both NPK levels with higher increments at 1.5 times recommended. Seed yield and harvest index decreased significantly only at recommended NPK in NFCs. Seed quality in terms of nutrients, protein and oil contents reduced in NFCs at recommended NPK. The application of 1.5 times recommended NPK provided protection against yield loss due to ambient O3. 相似文献
