The self-organising map approach was used to assess the efficiency of chlorinated solvent removal from petrochemical wastewater in a refinery wastewater treatment plant. Chlorinated solvents and inorganic anions (11 variables) were determined in 72 wastewater samples, collected from three different purification streams. The classification of variables identified technical solvents, brine from oil desalting and runoff sulphates as pollution sources in the refinery, affecting the quality of wastewater treatment plant influent. The classification of samples revealed the formation of five clusters: the first three clusters contained samples collected from the drainage water, process water and oiled rainwater treatment streams. The fourth cluster consisted mainly of samples collected after biological treatment, and the fifth one of samples collected after an unusual event. SOM analysis showed that the biological treatment step significantly reduced concentrations of chlorinated solvents in wastewater. 相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appears to be increasingly used, in addition to standard ultrasonography for the diagnosis of abnormalities in utero. Previous studies have recently drawn attention to the technical refinement of MRI to visualize the fetal bones and muscles. Beyond commonly used T2-weighted MRI, echoplanar, thick-slab T2-weighted and dynamic sequences, and three-dimensional MRI techniques, are about to provide new imaging insights into the normal and the pathological musculoskeletal system of the fetus. Phytoremediation is the quite novel technique of cleaning polluted sites through the use of plants. Phytoremediation methods are comparatively cheap, are accepted by the public and are ecologically advantageous, compared to common technological approaches. Until today, there have been only a few examples for successful applications. One reason is that the processes occurring are complex, and a full clean up may require many years. Plants have an influence on the water balance of a site, they change redox potential and pH, and stimulate microbial activity of the soil. These indirect influences may accelerate degradation in the root zone or reduce the leaching of compounds into the groundwater. Compounds taken up into plants may be metabolised, accumulate, or volatilise into air. Based on these processes, several phytoremediation methods have been developed: Phytoextraction, rhizofiltration, phytostabilisation, rhizound phytodegradation, pump and tree, land farming, phytovolatilisation, hydraulic control and even more. Already in use are plants (and here mainly willows, poplars and grasses) for the degradation of petroleum products, aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX), chlorinated solvents, explosives and cyanides. Phytotoxicity and pollutants mass balance have rarely been documented carefully. Often, the success of the projects was not controlled, and only estimates can be made about the applicability and the potential of phytoremediation. im Variationsbereich des Verfahrens. Die sequentielle Extraktion kann folglich zur Untersuchung der Mobilisierbarkeit von
Schwermetallen auch aus Mikroproben mit variablen Probenmengen eingesetzt werden.
Mit Hilfe dieses Verfahrens wurden die Mobilisierbarkeiten von Zink, Kupfer und Blei der Schluff- und Tonfraktion von Stra?ensedimenten
mit Staubniederschl?gen an zwei urbanen Standorten mit unterschiedlicher, verkehrsbedingter Schwermetallbelastung verglichen.

We present a new mathematical programming framework that is adaptable to a variety of spatially explicit landscape problems
in environmental investment, conservation, and land-use planning, transport planning, and agriculture. As part of capturing
spatial interdependencies, the framework considers decision variables at two levels, finely spaced grid cells and landholdings.
We applied the framework to an environmental investment problem using objective functions representing biodiversity and carbon
sequestration. We also tested the model to optimize the path of a road through part of the landscape. Using the Nambucca case
study in eastern Australia, we applied a hybrid greedy randomised adaptive search procedure (GRASP) to find solutions to the

Sulfonamides (SAs) are a group of antibiotic drugs widely used in veterinary medicine. The contamination of the environment by these pharmaceuticals has raised concern in recent years. However, knowledge of their (eco)toxicity is still very basic and is restricted to just a few of these substances. Even though their toxicological analysis has been thoroughly performed and ecotoxicological data are available in the literature, a systematic analysis of their ecotoxicological potential has yet to be carried out. To fill this gap, 12 different SAs were chosen for detailed analysis with the focus on different bacteria as well as non-target organisms (algae and plants). A flexible (eco)toxicological test battery was used, including enzymes (acetylcholinesterase and glutathione reductase), luminescent marine bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), soil bacteria (Arthrobacter globiformis), limnic unicellular green algae (Scenedesmus vacuolatus) and duckweed (Lemna minor), in order to take into account both the aquatic and terrestrial compartments of the environment, as well as different trophic levels. It was found that SAs are not only toxic towards green algae (EC50 = 1.54-32.25 mg L−1) but have even stronger adverse effect on duckweed (EC50 = 0.02-4.89 mg L−1) than atrazine - herbicide (EC50 = 2.59 mg L−1). 相似文献

Carbon dioxide emissions have accelerated since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol. This discouraging development may partly
be blamed on accelerating world growth and on lags in policy instruments. However, it also raises serious question concerning
whether policies to reduce CO2 emissions are as effective as generally assumed. In recent years, a considerable number of studies have identified various
feedback mechanisms of climate policies that often erode, and occasionally reinforce, their effectiveness. These studies generally
focus on a few feedback mechanisms at a time, without capturing the entire effect. Partial accounting of policy feedbacks
is common in many climate scenarios. The IPCC, for example, only accounts for direct leakage and rebound effects. This article
attempts to map the aggregate effects of different types of climate policy feedback mechanisms in a cohesive framework. Controlling
feedback effects is essential if the policy measures are to make any difference on a global level. A general conclusion is
that aggregate policy feedback mechanisms tend to make current climate policies much less effective than is generally assumed.
In fact, various policy measures involve a definite risk of ‘backfiring’ and actually increasing CO2 emissions. This risk is particularly pronounced once effects of climate policies on the pace of innovation in climate technology
are considered. To stand any chance of controlling carbon emissions, it is imperative that feedback mechanisms are integrated
into emission scenarios, targets for emission reduction and implementation of climate policy. In many cases, this will reduce
the scope for subsidies to renewable energy sources, but increase the scope for other measures such as schemes to return carbon
dioxide to the ground and to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases from wetlands and oceans. A framework that incorporates
policy feedback effects necessitates rethinking the design of the national and regional emission targets. This leads us to
a new way of formulating emission targets that include feedback effects, the global impact target. Once the full climate policy feedback mechanisms are accounted for, there are probably only three main routes in climate
policy that stand a chance of mitigating global warming: (a) returning carbon to the ground, (b) technological leaps in zero-emission
energy technology that make it profitable to leave much carbon in the ground even in Annex II countries and (c) international
agreements that make it more profitable to leave carbon in the ground or in forests. 相似文献

The correlation of data on the elements obtained by instrumental chemical analysis of highly representative plant samples led to the establishment of a first Biological System of Elements (BSE) in 1994. Including other physiological parameters like availability of chemical elements, transport, storage, etc. it is clear, that aside from the bioinorganic aspects of coordination chemistries of given elements, features of essentiality or toxicity depend on their interference with enzymatic processes. Notably, the latter are not to be considered as purely catalytic transformations, but are instead related to the reproduction of organisms in a direct or indirect manner — as autocatalytic: a process whereby a protein containing some metal or burdened in function by its presence is indirectly involved in its own reproduction. Stoichiometric Network Analysis (SNA) explicitly deals with the general dynamics of such autocatalytic systems. Given there is a relationship between the kinds of metal or metalloid species and the key biological/biochemical transformations to be promoted using them — a relationship which is the topic of bioinorgnaic chemistry-, and that biochemistry is in effect about systems which can reproduce and thus behave autocatalytically, one can expect SNA to yield statements on the basic features of biology and biochemistry as well. 相似文献
