One-year-old cherry trees were fumigated with propene and gas-phase hydrogen peroxide, singly and in combination, in controlled-environment chambers for an 8-week period during the summer season. A UV light source was included with the combined propene and hydrogen peroxide regime to provide a source of hydroxyl radicals and ozone, and thus all the constituents of a photochemical smog. Measurements were made of soluble protein concentration and of glutathione reductase activity in leaf extracts from two or three leaf classes in plants from each treatment regime at the end of each fumigation period. Significant increases in soluble protein concentration with respect to the controls were found in plants fumigated with propene and hydrogen peroxide. The occurrence and extent of these differences depended on the leaf class and on the timing of the fumigation period over the summer with respect to bud break. The activity of glutathione reductase was found to be significantly increased in mature lower leaves of plants which had been fumigated with hydrogen peroxide. This effect was independent of the timing of fumigation with respect to bud break. Enzyme activity was also increased in propene and in propene plus hydrogen peroxide treatments, but only when plants were fumigated early in the growth season.  相似文献

Variable levels of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in clams (Laternula elliptica) collected from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Clams collected in and near Winter Quarters Bay contained high levels of organochlorine compounds, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A strong gradient has been documented in Winter Quarters Bay that been linked to human activities at McMurdo Station. The activity of clam extracts as inducers of P4501A1-dependent ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity was determined using in vitro bioassays utilizing rat hepatoma H4IIE cells. The extracts which exhibited the highest induction activities were those derived from clams collected in contaminated areas. Additionally, there was an excellent linear correlation between induced EROD activity versus total PCB levels (r2=0.96). The complimentary nature of both the analytical and bioanalytical data confirms the utility of the latter assay and provides a method for estimating the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) toxic equivalents in extracts from marine biota.  相似文献

Vapor pressures of six chlorinated phenols were measured by capillary gas chromatography using a 1.0-m BP-1 bonded phase column. GC-determined vapor pressures (PGC) were correlated with known liquid-phase vapor pressures (PL) by the equation: Log PGC = 1.026 Log PL — 0.132, r2 = 0.975 (vapor pressures in pascals). This relationship was used to estimate PL for chloroguaiacols, chloroveratroles, and 4-nonylphenol from their experimental PGC.  相似文献

Historically, the function of Arctic ecosystems in terms of cycles of nutrients and carbon has led to low levels of primary production and exchanges of energy, water and greenhouse gases have led to low local and regional cooling. Sequestration of carbon from atmospheric CO2, in extensive, cold organic soils and the high albedo from low, snow-covered vegetation have had impacts on regional climate. However, many aspects of the functioning of Arctic ecosystems are sensitive to changes in climate and its impacts on biodiversity. The current Arctic climate results in slow rates of organic matter decomposition. Arctic ecosystems therefore tend to accumulate organic matter and elements despite low inputs. As a result, soil-available elements like nitrogen and phosphorus are key limitations to increases in carbon fixation and further biomass and organic matter accumulation. Climate warming is expected to increase carbon and element turnover, particularly in soils, which may lead to initial losses of elements but eventual, slow recovery. Individual species and species diversity have clear impacts on element inputs and retention in Arctic ecosystems. Effects of increased CO2 and UV-B on whole ecosystems, on the other hand, are likely to be small although effects on plant tissue chemisty, decomposition and nitrogen fixation may become important in the long-term. Cycling of carbon in trace gas form is mainly as CO2 and CH4. Most carbon loss is in the form of CO2, produced by both plants and soil biota. Carbon emissions as methane from wet and moist tundra ecosystems are about 5% of emissions as CO2 and are responsive to warming in the absence of any other changes. Winter processes and vegetation type also affect CH4 emissions as well as exchanges of energy between biosphere and atmosphere. Arctic ecosystems exhibit the largest seasonal changes in energy exchange of any terrestrial ecosystem because of the large changes in albedo from late winter, when snow reflects most incoming radiation, to summer when the ecosystem absorbs most incoming radiation. Vegetation profoundly influences the water and energy exchange of Arctic ecosystems. Albedo during the period of snow cover declines from tundra to forest tundra to deciduous forest to evergreen forest. Shrubs and trees increase snow depth which in turn increases winter soil temperatures. Future changes in vegetation driven by climate change are therefore, very likely to profoundly alter regional climate.  相似文献

The key objective of this study was to investigate the attenuation mechanisms of seven N-nitrosamine compounds at environmental concentrations and under conditions relevant to groundwater recharge operations. The study used a combination of controlled laboratory-scale soil-column experiments and groundwater monitoring at a full-scale river-bank filtration facility. Findings of the controlled column experiments suggest that N-nitrosodimethylamine and six other N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosomethylethylamine, N-nitroso-n-propylamine, N-nitrosodi-n-butylamine, N-nitrosopiperidine, and N-nitrosopyrrolidine) are biodegradable under oxic and anoxic oxidation-reduction conditions. Half lives determined in this study for the targeted compounds varied between 1.3 and 7 days, which will ensure a removal to below detection limits (< 2 ng/L) within short travel times in groundwater recharge systems. Findings of this study suggest that complete removal of N-nitrosamines requires the presence of an adapted biocommunity, which will be established over several weeks to months.  相似文献

We have determined the congener compositions of nine commercial Aroclor products of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the sub-part-per-million level using high-resolution gas chromatography combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry according to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 1668A. These Aroclor composition data should allow improved characterization and risk assessment of PCB contamination at hazardous waste sites, particularly for dioxin-like PCB congeners. By combining the data on the concentrations of each dioxin-like congener with its World Health Organization toxicity equivalency factor, we have established dioxin toxic equivalent concentrations for each pure Aroclor product.  相似文献

Changes in boreal climate of the magnitude projected for the 21st century have always caused vegetation changes large enough to be societally important. However, the rates and patterns of vegetation change are difficult to predict. We review evidence suggesting that these vegetation changes may be gradual at the northern forest limit or where seed dispersal limits species distribution. However, forest composition may be quite resilient to climate change in the central portions of a species range until some threshold is surpassed. At this point, changes can be rapid and unexpected, often causing a switch to very different ecosystem types. Many of these triggers for change are amenable to management, suggesting that our choice of policies in the coming decades will substantially influence the ecological and societal consequences of current climatic change.  相似文献

Concerns have been expressed that emissions of volatile hydrocarbons (HCs) from bioremediation facilities containing soils contaminated with petroleum HCs may negatively impact regional air quality or human health. Little information is available regarding the emission of HCs from bioremediation sites, and few field studies have been performed during which the flux of HCs has been directly measured during bioremediation. To aid in answering questions about the impact of bioremediation facilities on the atmospheric environment, a two-part field study was conducted over summer 1996 at a remote landfarm in northern Ontario where diesel fuel-contaminated soil was undergoing bioremediation. Volatile total hydrocarbon (THC) atmospheric flux measurements were successfully taken over 18 days using a flux gradient micrometeorological technique incorporating a THC detector constructed in-house. Peak THC emissions reached 131 microg C/m2/sec shortly after implementation and tilling of the landfarm soil. The influence of soil temperature and tillage on THC emissions was examined. Off-site inhalation exposure was considered with the aid of an areal source model and results from speciated air samples collected on sorbent tubes and analyzed via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GCMS) techniques.  相似文献

This paper examines the determination of effort levels, the rental price of quotas and the number of participants in a fishery managed with a total allowable catch and individual transferable quotas. How these variables change is determined for three phases of the management process. Potential participants in the fishery are assumed to be heterogeneous in their catching capabilities so that almost all active fishers earn positive net profits from fishing activities. It is shown that these quasirents are reduced during any of the management phases considered here. The impact of free allocations of permanent quota rights on fishers’ welfare is also considered. This may increase the welfare of all fishers if the allocation is based on catch history. However, an example is provided where the welfare of some highliners is reduced when the allocation is based on effort history.  相似文献

This molecular phylogenetic analysis of 18S ribosomal RNA (18SrDNA) gene sequences from 16 species of holothuroid, suggests strong support for an alternative taxonomic scheme to replace the existing classification. When trees drawn from the 18S rDNA data were constrained to show expected relationships between the holothourid orders, they were significantly worse than the best tree under SH tests. These analyses indicated strongly that the subclass Aspidochirotacea is paraphyletic. Sequences from the order Dendrochirotida grouped with aspidochiroitid sequences, with high bootstrap support, to the exclusion of the elasipod sequence. In line with recent morphological studies the order Apodida were a basal sister group to the other three holothuroid orders examined and the Dendrochirotida was a derived holothuroid order.
