The present study reports on the mercury concentrations of the vestimentiferan worm, Lamellibrachia satsuma, (Annelida: Pogonophora) found near hydrothermal vents at a depth of 80-100 m in the northern parts of Kagoshima Bay. The vestimentiferan worms had total mercury concentrations of 238 ng/g in the anterior muscle of the body and 164 ng/g in the posterior trophosome. Methylmercury constituted only 7.6% of total mercury detected anteriorly and 16.3% posteriorly. The mean total mercury concentration in filtrated ambient seawater of the worm habitat was 1.1 ng/l. The worm should accumulate mercury in seawater by a one-step into the anterior and posterior parts as 2.2 x 10(%) and 1.5 x 10(5) times those of the filtered ambient seawater, respectively. The bioaccumulation factor of mercury by the worms with only their respiration would be actually larger than that by other marine animals through food webs. The high bioaccumulation factor of mercury in the worms suggest the following two possibilities: (i) the biological half-life of organomercury in the worm could be exceptionally long; or (ii) the lifetime of vestimentiferan worms examined in the present study could be extremely long. Various metals in one specimen of the worm were analyzed by using ICP-MS, and then gold as well as silver were detected in the worm. Gold was detected for the first time from marine animals.  相似文献

A new predictive toxicokinetics model was developed to estimate subacute toxicity (target organs, severity, etc.) of non-congeneric industrial chemicals, where the chemical structures and physico-chemical properties are only available. Thus, a physiological pharmacokinetics model, which consists of blood, liver, kidney (these were experimentally found as major toxicological targets), muscle and fat compartments , was established to simulate the chemical concentrations in organs/tissues with pharmacokinetic parameters by means of Runge-Kutta-Gill algorithm. The pliarmacokinetic parameters, i.e. absorption rate, absorption ratio, hepatic extraction ratio of metabolism and renal clearance were calculated by using separately established Quantitative Structure-Pharmacokinetics Relationship equations. The developed predictive model was then applied to simulations of 43 non-congeneric industrial chemicals. The chemical concentrations in organs/tissues after single oral administration were simulated, and their maximum concentrations (Cmax's) and area tinder the concentration-time curves (AUC's) were calculated.Fast Inverse Laplace Transform was newly applied for the purpose of simulation of 28-day repeated dose toxicity.Simulated concentrations of 28 days repeated dose were, however, found to be the same as those of simple repetitions of a single administration per day because of the short half-lives of non-congeneric industrial chemicals.A comparison of subacute toxicity data with Cmax's and AUC's in a single dose scenario suggested that the organs/tissues with relatively high concentrations of tested chemical substances were the most sensitive targets within a chemical.Chemical concentrations in liver, for instance, were correlated with the severity of hepatotoxicity among the chemicals. It was also suggested that to improve and widen the present approach, data of metabolite and reactivity of non-congeneric industrial chemicals to organs/tissues, receptors, etc. should be incorporated into the model.  相似文献

In 1999, Japanese domestic leafy vegetables were successively investigated for levels of dioxins, including 17 dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), four non-ortho co-planar PCBs (co-PCBs) and eight mono-ortho co-PCBs, all of which had been assigned toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) by WHO in 1997. The mean levels of dioxins in the edible portions were 0.07 (0.09) pg TEQ/g in spinach, 0.13 (0.14) pgTEQ/g in garland chrysanthemum, 0.01 (0.04) pg TEQ/g in mitsuba (marsh parsley) and 0.01 (0.03) pg TEQ/g in chingentsuai (Brassica Campestris var. chinesis), when non-detects were set to zero (and set to half the limit of detection). In order to understand the dioxin pollution of leafy vegetables in detail, a further investigation of dioxin levels in the tissues of spinach was conducted. As a result, the dioxin levels in the leaves were found to be higher than those in the stem and red collar, but they were much lower than those found in the primary and secondary roots, which are considerably affected by the soil, which is recognized as a sink of airborne dioxins. The dioxin levels in edible portions (leaves, stem and red collar) were obviously lower than those in non-edible portions (primary and secondary roots). In addition, from the finding that several lower-chlorinated PCDD/Fs and co-PCBs, namely 2,3,7,8-TCDD/F, 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,7,8/2,3,4,7,8-PeCDFs, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,7,8-/1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDFs, 3,3',4,4'-TCB, 2,3,3',4,4'-/2,3',4,4',5-PeCBs, and 2,3',4,4',5,5'-HxCB, were more highly represented in the dioxins in the leaves than in those in the secondary roots, it was suggested that in leafy vegetables the deposition of gaseous, presumably moderately volatile dioxins in leaf wax is another pollution pathway in addition to the adhesion of dioxin-contaminated particles including soil.  相似文献

We report the results of 3 surveys of visual display terminal (VDT) users who took a minibreak during which they viewed a stereoscopic image of a repeating parallel pattern showing planets. The single image stereogram method employed is called Stretch EyeTM, and we evaluated the effects of Stretch EyeTM on asthenopia. An accommodative relaxation of about 1 D was observed in participants while they were gazing at the image. The employees of 2 information technology companies were evaluated according to a visual analogue scale (VAS) for subjective symptoms of asthenopia and eyesight. The results showed that Stretch EyeTM was effective in easing visual fatigue due to VDT work and it improved eyesight under working conditions.  相似文献

Concentrations of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins in toxic dinoflagellate cells and in marine planktonic copepods were monitored during the bloom of Alexandrium tamarense in Hiroshima Bay, western Japan. Concentration of the toxins retained by copepods was a function of the ambient toxin concentration, i.e. the product of A. tamarense cell density and cellular toxicity. The toxin concentration in copepods increased with the increase of toxicants in the seawater then leveled off, but decreased significantly at higher concentrations. In the field, the maximum toxin concentration was 1.2 pmol ind-1, whereas in the laboratory, the copepod Acartia omorii accumulated a much higher concentration of PSP toxins (24 pmol ind-1). Feeding avoidance against Alexandrium tamarense and a shift to alternative food sources such as diatoms in the field might keep their toxin levels lower than their potentially maximum level. The copepod toxin levels in the field were not so high as to cause an instantaneous lethal effect on their predator fishes but may reach possibly lethal levels after a few days' continuous feeding. Overall toxin retention by copepods after 12 h feeding and 2 h starvation was only 2.5% of total ingested toxins, which suggested that a significant amount of toxins was released into the seawater. Measurements of toxin reduction and gut evacuation suggested that the toxins were removed through both fecal evacuation and metabolism (e.g. excretion, decomposition and transformation). The results, as a whole, imply that copepods can be a link for PSP toxin flux in both pelagic and benthic food webs and can also be a sink for toxins by metabolizing and removing them from the environment.Communicated by T. The decomposition of hydroperfluorocarboxylic acids [H-PFCAs; HCnF2nCOOH (= 4 and 6)] induced by heteropolyacid photocatalyst H4SiW12O40 in water was investigated, and the results are compared with the results for the corresponding perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs; CnF2n+1COOH). This is the first report on the photochemical decomposition of H-PFCAs, which are being developed as alternative surfactants to environmentally persistent and bioaccumulative PFCAs. H-PFCAs were not decomposed by irradiation with UV-Visible light (>290 nm) in the absence of H4SiW12O40. In contrast, UV-Visible light irradiation of H-PFCAs in the presence of H4SiW12O40 efficiently decomposed H-PFCAs to F and CO2. The decomposition reactions showed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the decomposition rate constants were 1.8-2.5 times higher than those for the corresponding PFCAs. The reaction mechanism can be explained by elimination of H+ from the ω-H atom of the H-PFCAs by the excited catalyst, followed by formation of perfluorodicarboxylic acids.  相似文献

We measured the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), non-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls (non-ortho PCBs) and mono-ortho polychlorinated biphenyls (mono-ortho PCBs) in blood collected from 279 Yusho patients living in Japan, 92 Yusho-suspected persons living in Japan and 127 normal controls living in Fukuoka Prefecture, and compared among the groups in terms the concentrations of these compounds. The total toxic equivalents (TEQ) concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs, non-ortho PCBs, and mono-ortho PCBs in the bloods of Yusho patients and Yusho-suspected persons were 161.4 and 51.2 pg TEQ/g lipid, respectively and were about 3.5 and 1.1 times higher than those of normal controls, respectively. Although the TEQ concentrations of PCDDs, non-ortho PCBs, and mono-ortho PCBs among Yusho patients, Yusho-suspected persons and normal controls were nearly the same, the PCDFs levels of Yusho patients were significantly higher than those of Yusho-suspected persons and about 10.3 times higher than those of normal controls. In Yusho patients, PCDFs contributed about 65% to the total TEQ concentration. Among the PCDFs congeners for Yusho patients, the concentration of 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran (PeCDF) was about 11.3 times higher than that of normal controls. These findings indicated that Yusho patients even now, more than 34 years after the outbreak of Yusho, have much higher blood levels of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF in general than do unaffected persons.  相似文献
