Energy saving is becoming a rising priority as a response to climate change and fossil fuel depletion in recent years. However, despite energy-related behaviour change being an important part of many environmental education initiatives, “energy literacy” among citizens remains patchy in both the USA and the UK, with evidence of strong positive attitudes but less consistent knowledge. Whilst it is clear that increasing knowledge does not automatically produce behaviour changes, potential questions must be asked about the logic of focusing solely on behaviour without simultaneously exploring and enhancing understanding of energy issues. This research, undertaken at a higher education institution with a strong focus on sustainability, illustrates the potential risks of targeting behaviour change and individual action at the expense of increasing knowledge, or encouraging collaborative and democratic endeavours. Results from an online survey indicate widespread misconceptions about energy which may reduce the effectiveness of energy-saving behaviours, alongside variable levels of motivation and engagement with energy issues. Respondents report a strong belief in the efficacy of personal changes, yet uncertainty about their capacity to influence business and government alongside a persistent faith in science to provide solutions to energy issues. The paper concludes by reflecting on the challenges arising from these findings for understanding agency and effectiveness in energy relationships.  相似文献

Abstract

The elemental compositions of the water-soluble and acid-digestible fractions of 24-hr integrated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) samples collected in Steubenville, OH, from 2000 to 2002 were determined using dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The water-soluble elemental compositions of PM2.5 samples collected at four satellite monitoring sites in the surrounding region were also determined. Fe was the most abundant but least water soluble of the elements determined at the Steubenville site, having a mean ambient concentration of 272 µg/m3 and a median fractional solubility of 6%. Fe solubility and its correlations with SO4 2? and temperature varied significantly by season, consistent with the hypothesis that secondary sulfates may help to mobilize soluble Fe under suitable summertime photochemical conditions. Significantly higher ambient concentrations were observed at Steubenville than at each of the four satellite sites for 10 of the 18 elements (Al, As, Ca, Cd, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, and Zn) determined in the water-soluble PM2.5 fraction. Concentrations of Fe, Mn, and Zn at Steubenville were substantially higher than concentrations reported recently for larger U.S. cities. Receptor modeling identified seven sources affecting the Steubenville site. An (NH4)2SO4-dominated source, likely representing secondary PM2.5 from coal-fired plants to the west and southwest of Steubenville, accounted for 42% of the PM2.5 mass, and two sources likely dominated by emissions from motor vehicles and from iron and steel facilities in the immediate Steubenville vicinity accounted for 20% and 10%, respectively. Other sources included an NH4NO3 source (15%), a crustal source (6%), a mixed nonferrous metals and industrial source (3%), and a primary coal combustion source (3%). Results suggest the importance of very different regional and local source mechanisms in contributing to PM2.5 mass at Steubenville and reinforce the need for further research to elucidate whether metals such as Fe, Mn, and Zn play a role in the PM2.5 health effects observed previously there.  相似文献

In this study the continuous treatment of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) containing synthetic wastewater at increasing concentrations up to 2600 mg L-1 in an anaerobic fixed bed reactor was achieved. As a source of microorganisms municipal sewage sludge was acclimatised to maximally 50 mg L-1 2-CP by 3 successive feedings within 1.5 months. Then, an anaerobic fixed bed reactor was inoculated with this sludge and was operated for 318 d, during which the 2-CP influent concentration was stepwise increased from 50 to 2600 mg L-1 within 265 d. At a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2.2 d the 2-CP loading rate was 2 g L-1 d-1 and the average 2-CP removal rate was 0.87 g L-1 d-1, accounting for 73% removal. This is the highest 2-CP removal rate ever reported. The negative effect of a 2-CP loading rate of 1.36 g L-1 d-1 on 2-CP removal was reversible within 2 wk when lower loading conditions (e.g. 0.76 g 2-CP L-1 d-1) were re-established. The median chloride ion release per unit 2-CP degraded was 0.24, which was reasonably close to the theoretically expected value of 0.28. In a batch assay, carried out with relatively clear reactor effluent, the highest removal rate of 2-CP was 175 mg L-1 d-1. At the time of reactor termination on day 318, the 2-CP removal rate by the biofilm in the reactor was 0.61 g L-1 d-1, corresponding to a HRT of 3.4 d and a 2-CP loading rate of 0.76 g L-1 d-1. At these very stable conditions removal of COD was 84% and of 2-CP 81%  相似文献

Leaching of the strongly sorbing pesticides glyphosate and pendimethalin was evaluated in an 8-month field study focussing on preferential flow and particle-facilitated transport, both of which may enhance the leaching of such pesticides in structured soils. Glyphosate mainly sorbs to mineral sorption sites, while pendimethalin mainly sorbs to organic sorption sites. The two pesticides were applied in equal dosage to a structured, tile-drained soil, and the concentration of the pesticides was then measured in drainage water sampled flow-proportionally.The leaching pattern of glyphosate resembled that of pendimethalin, suggesting that the leaching potential of pesticides sorbed to either the inorganic or organic soil fractions is high in structured soils. Both glyphosate and pendimethalin leached from the root zone, with the average concentration in the drainage water being 3.5 and 2.7 μg L−1, respectively. Particle-facilitated transport (particles >0.24 μm) accounted for only a small proportion of the observed leaching (13-16% for glyphosate and 16-31% for pendimethalin). Drain-connected macropores located above or in the vicinity of the drains facilitated very rapid transport of pesticide to the drains. That the concentration of glyphosate and pendimethalin in the drainage water remained high (>0.1 μg L−1) for up to 7 d after a precipitation event indicates that macropores between the drains connected to underlying fractures were able to transport strongly sorbing pesticides in the dissolved phase. Lateral transport of dissolved pesticide via such discontinuities implies that strongly sorbing pesticides such as glyphosate and pendimethalin could potentially be present in high concentrations (>0.1 μg L−1) in both water originating from the drainage system and the shallow groundwater located at the depth of the drainage system.  相似文献

This research advances the understanding of the location of perceived landscape values through a statistically based approach to spatial analysis of value densities. Survey data were obtained from a sample of people living in and using the Murray River region, Australia, where declining environmental quality prompted a reevaluation of its conservation status. When densities of 12 perceived landscape values were mapped using geographic information systems (GIS), valued places clustered along the entire river bank and in associated National/State Parks and reserves. While simple density mapping revealed high value densities in various locations, it did not indicate what density of a landscape value could be regarded as a statistically significant hotspot or distinguish whether overlapping areas of high density for different values indicate identical or adjacent locations. A spatial statistic Getis–Ord Gi* was used to indicate statistically significant spatial clusters of high value densities or “hotspots”. Of 251 hotspots, 40% were for single non-use values, primarily spiritual, therapeutic or intrinsic. Four hotspots had 11 landscape values. Two, lacking economic value, were located in ecologically important river red gum forests and two, lacking wilderness value, were near the major towns of Echuca-Moama and Albury-Wodonga. Hotspots for eight values showed statistically significant associations with another value. There were high associations between learning and heritage values while economic and biological diversity values showed moderate associations with several other direct and indirect use values. This approach may improve confidence in the interpretation of spatial analysis of landscape values by enhancing understanding of value relationships.  相似文献

Average concentrations of particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 microm (PM2.5) in Steubenville, OH, have decreased by more than 10 microg/m3 since the landmark Harvard Six Cities Study associated the city's elevated PM2.5 concentrations with adverse health effects in the 1980s. Given the promulgation of a new National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for PM2.5 in 1997, a current assessment of PM2.5 in the Steubenville region is warranted. The Steubenville Comprehensive Air Monitoring Program (SCAMP) was conducted from 2000 through 2002 to provide such an assessment. The program included both an outdoor ambient air monitoring component and an indoor and personal air sampling component. This paper, which is the first in a series of four that will present results from the outdoor portion of SCAMP, provides an overview of the outdoor ambient air monitoring program and addresses statistical issues, most notably autocorrelation, that have been overlooked by many PM2.5 data analyses. The average PM2.5 concentration measured in Steubenville during SCAMP (18.4 microg/m3) was 3.4 microg/m3 above the annual PM2.5 NAAQS. On average, sulfate and organic material accounted for approximately 31% and 25%, respectively, of the total PM2.5 mass. Local sources contributed an estimated 4.6 microg/m3 to Steubenville's mean PM2.5 concentration. PM2.5 and each of its major ionic components were significantly correlated in space across all pairs of monitoring sites in the region, suggesting the influence of meteorology and long-range transport on regional PM2.5 concentrations. Statistically significant autocorrelation was observed among time series of PM2.5 and component data collected at daily and 1-in-4-day frequencies during SCAMP. Results of spatial analyses that accounted for autocorrelation were generally consistent with findings from previous studies that did not consider autocorrelation; however, these analyses also indicated that failure to account for autocorrelation can lead to incorrect conclusions about statistical significance.  相似文献

Filtration rates and the extent of phagocytosed food particles were determined in the offshore lamellibranchs Artica islandica and Modiolus modiolus in relation to particle concentration, body size and temperature. Pure cultures of the algae Chlamydomonas sp. and Dunaliella sp. were used as food. A new method for determining filtration rates was developed by modifying the classical indirect method. The concentration of the experimental medium (100%) was kept constant to ±1%. Whenever the bivalves removed algae from the medium, additional algae were added and the filtration rate of the bivalves expressed in terms of percentage amount of algae added per unit time. The concentration of the experimental medium was measured continuously by a flow colorimeter. By keeping the concentration constant, filtration rates could be determined even in relation to different definite concentrations and over long periods of time. The amount of phagocytosed food was measured by employing the biuret-method (algae cells ingested minus algae cells in faeces). Filtration rates vary continuously. As a rule, however, during a period of 24 h, two phases of high food consumption alternate with two phases of low food consumption during which the mussels' activities are almost exclusively occupied by food digestion. Filtration rate and amount of phagocytosed algae increase with increasing body size. Specimens of A. islandica with a body length of 33 to 83 mm filter between 0.7 to 71/h (30–280 mg dry weight of algae/24 h) and phagocytose 21 to 122 mg dry weight of algae during a period of 24 h. The extent of food utilization declines from 75 to 43% with increasing body size. In M. modiolus of 40 to 88 mm body length, the corresponding values of filtration rate and amount of phagocytosed algae range between 0.5 and 2.5 l/h (20–100 mg dry weight of algae) and 17 to 90 mg dry weight of algae, respectively; the percentage of food utilization does not vary much and lies near 87%. Filtration rate and amount of phagocytosed algae follow the allometric equation y=a·x b. In this equation, y represents the filtration rate (or the amount of phagocytosed algae), a the specific capacity of a mussel of 1 g soft parts (wet weight), x the wet weight of the bivalves' soft parts, and b the specific form of relationship between body size and filtration rate (or the amount of phagocytosed algae). The values obtained for b lie within a range which indicates that the filtration rate (or the amount of phagocytosed algae) is sometimes more or less proportional to body surface area, sometimes to body weight. Temperature coefficients for the filtration rate are in Arctica islandica Q10 (4°–14°C)=2.05 and Q10 (10°–20°C)=1.23, in Modiolus modiolus Q10 (4°–14°C)=2.33 and Q10 (10°–20°C)=1.63. In A. islandica, temperature coefficients for the amount of phagocytosed algae amount to Q10 (4°–14°C)=2.15 and Q10 (10°–20°C)=1.55, in M. modiolus to Q10 (4°–14°C)=2.54 and Q10 (10°–20°C)=1.92. Upon a temperature decrease from 12° to 4°C, filtration rate and amount of phagocytosed algae are reduced to 50%. At the increasing concentrations of 10×106, 20×106 and 40×106 cells of Chlamydomonas/l offered, filtration rates of both mollusc species decrease at the ratios 3:2:1. At 12°C, pseudofaeces production occurs in both species in a suspension of 40×106, at 20°C in 60×106 cells of Chlamydomonas/l. At 12°C and 10–20×106 cells of Chlamydomonas/l, the maximum amount of algae is phagocytosed. At 40×106 cells/l, the amount of phagocytosed cells is reduced by 26% as a consequence of low filtration rates and intensive production of pseudofaeces. At 20°C and 20–50×106 cells of Chlamydomonas/l, the maximum amount of algae is sieved out and phagocytosed; the concentration of 10×106 cells/l is too low and cannot be compensated for by increased activity of the molluscs. With increasing temperatures, the amount of suspended matter, allowing higher rates of filtration and food utilization, shifts toward higher particle concentrations; but at each temperature a threshold exists, above which increase in particle density is not followed by increase in the amount of particles ingested. Based on theoretical considerations and facts known from literature, 7 different levels of food concentration are distinguishable. Experiments with Chlamydomonas sp. and Dunaliella sp. used as food, reveal the combined influence of particle concentration and particle size on filtration rate. Supplementary experiments with Mytilus edulis resulted in filtration rates similar to those obtained for M. modiolus, whereas, experiments with Cardium edule, Mya arenaria, Mya truncata and Venerupis pullastra revealed low filtration rates. These species, inhabiting waters with high seston contents, seem to be adapted to higher food concentrations, and unable to compensate for low concentrations by higher filtration activities. Adaptation to higher food concentrations makes it possible to ingest large amounts of particles even at low filtration rates. Suspension feeding bivalves are subdivided into four groups on the basis of their different food filtration behaviour.  相似文献
