Modern science is global. This is particularly true of environmental science, which has been guided to a considerable extent by international environmental policy. Accordingly, one might expect the standards of scientific research around the globe to have unified over the last 30 years. Yet environmental scientists from different nations and scientific schools have demonstrably dissimilar views on key environmental issues. This is the conclusion we reached after a series of in-depth interviews with prominent American and Russian environmental scientists. The greatest difference was found in the perception of two global issues—stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change.  相似文献

The present study attempted to evaluate the carcinogenicity of natural phenolic compounds with previously demonstrated antifungal activity, using a computational structure–cytotoxicity approach, namely the quantum structure cytotoxicity relationship model. The cytotoxicity of 15 phenolic compounds with antiviral activity 96?h after treatment was studied using the AdmetSAR computational program. Per the EPA classification, four of the investigated compounds would be included in the second cytotoxicity category, four in the third category, and six showed no toxicity, rendering the studied natural phenolic compounds much less toxic to aquatic life than synthetic pesticides, the organophosphorus compounds, which mostly fall into the first and second categories of toxicity.  相似文献

Concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd in soil solutions taken in the vicinity of a sulphur mine range from 354 to 9080 μM L−1, and exceeded the concentrations measured in solutions from light acid arable soils. The content of each metal was a negative function of either the solution pH or of Ca concentration. Reclamation of S-contaminated soil by an application of 2000 tonnes of limestone per hectare did not significantly affect the solubility of trace metals, whereas equilibration of soil samples with CaCO3 in the laboratory decreased solubility of metals, especially in the soil under moist conditions. Residues from forest-industry wastewater-treatment systems are treated as waste at many pulp and paper mills. These organic substances have previously been shown to have potential for production of large quantities of biogas. There is concern, however, that the process would require expensive equipment because of the slow degradation of these substances. Pure non-fibrous sludge from forest industry showed lower specific methane production during mesophilic digestion for 19 days, 53 ± 26 Nml/g of volatile solids as compared to municipal sewage sludge, 84 ± 24 Nml/g of volatile solids. This paper explores the possibility of using anaerobic co-digestion with municipal sewage sludge to enhance the potential of methane production from secondary sludge from a pulp and paper mill. It was seen in a batch anaerobic-digestion operation of 19 days that the specific methane production remained largely the same for municipal sewage sludge when up to 50% of the volatile solids were replaced with forest-industry secondary sludge. It was also shown that the solid residue from anaerobic digestion of the forest-industry sludge should be of suitable quality to use for improving soil quality on lands that are not used for food production.  相似文献
