Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) in efforts to combat climate change requires participating countries to periodically assess their forest resources on a national scale. Such a process is particularly challenging in the tropics because of technical difficulties related to large aboveground forest biomass stocks, restricted availability of affordable, appropriate remote-sensing images, and a lack of accurate forest inventory data. In this paper, we apply the Fourier-based FOTO method of canopy texture analysis to Google Earth's very-high-resolution images of the wet evergreen forests in the Western Ghats of India in order to (1) assess the predictive power of the method on aboveground biomass of tropical forests, (2) test the merits of free Google Earth images relative to their native commercial IKONOS counterparts and (3) highlight further research needs for affordable, accurate regional aboveground biomass estimations. We used the FOTO method to ordinate Fourier spectra of 1436 square canopy images (125 x 125 m) with respect to a canopy grain texture gradient (i.e., a combination of size distribution and spatial pattern of tree crowns), benchmarked against virtual canopy scenes simulated from a set of known forest structure parameters and a 3-D light interception model. We then used 15 1-ha ground plots to demonstrate that both texture gradients provided by Google Earth and IKONOS images strongly correlated with field-observed stand structure parameters such as the density of large trees, total basal area, and aboveground biomass estimated from a regional allometric model. Our results highlight the great potential of the FOTO method applied to Google Earth data for biomass retrieval because the texture-biomass relationship is only subject to 15% relative error, on average, and does not show obvious saturation trends at large biomass values. We also provide the first reliable map of tropical forest aboveground biomass predicted from free Google Earth images.  相似文献

Storm Xynthia crossed France’s western coast between 28th February and 1st March 2010. It hit the Vendée and Charente-Maritime departments hardest, as storm surge flooded up to 23,000 ha of coastal agricultural areas (i.e. polders), causing severe damage to farming operations. However, farm-level damage in the aftermath of seawater flooding is an issue that has rarely been explored in the literature. Here we investigated the effects of storm Xynthia on agriculture at the farm scale. We focused on the case study of Saint Laurent de la Prée research farm, a mixed crop–livestock system that was severely hit. All damages were described and economic losses were quantified for the years 2010 and 2011. The results show numerous consequences of the storm in terms of crop and fodder production losses, but also farm infrastructure repairs, crop restoration and animal health problems. Economic damage costs were high, reaching €71,720 in 2010 (€500/ha flooded) and €56,195 (€390/ha) in 2011 for the case study farm. The discussion highlights the farm-level impacts of seawater flooding and the crucial factors that can explain the damage caused to agriculture by storm events in coastal areas. The results are also discussed in the wider context of global warming which is expected to cause sea level rise and more frequent storm events in the future. The vulnerability of coastal agricultural areas to storms thus exposes broader issues of coastal flooding risk management and specifically the allied protection–remediation–adaptation measures. The conclusions underline the need for future research to address prospective scenarios and subsequent adaptive strategies.  相似文献

The drinking water treatment plant (WTP) in Irsch-Treves is one of the WTPs operated by the Public Utility Company of Treves (SWT) responsible for supplying the city of Treves with drinking water. This treatment plant has been responsible for the treatment of raw, soft water from the oligotrophic reservoir Riveris since 1958. The main functions of the WTP are the removal of particulate matter, manganese, iron, aluminium and organic material, especially humic substances. The removal of particulate matter such as bacteria, other microorganisms and plankton is very important to ensure a microbiologically and hygienically stable drinking water. Insufficient removal of particulate manganese may lead to manganese scaling in the supply system and, in extreme conditions, may lead to a brown-coloured drinking water. The so called Multi-Barrier-System is being used in the entire water treatment process. Under this system, great importance is given to the monitoring of the catchment area, the inflows, and the reservoirs. After a preliminary and subsequent sedimentation and biological treatment in the preliminary and in the main reservoirs respectively, the raw water is finally treated through flocculation filtration over the rapid multi-layer sand filters in the WTP Irsch. With this approach, only a rigid application of the above mentioned steps and the application of the latest recognized technology to maintain the supply system can best guarantee a constant supply of clean drinking water. Online particle count in raw water and in drinking water is one of the main quality control measures applied in the WTP Irsch. The conventional flocculation filtration is not always able to fulfil the increasing quality demands for drinking water, especially during adverse raw water quality conditions. This is the reason why more and more membrane filtration units are currently being installed in completely new plants, as substitutes in conventional plants, or for upgrade purposes. The SWT is currently planning an enlargement and upgrade of the WTP Irsch, integrating ultrafiltration, which was successfully tested in a pilot study. The upgrade of the elimination of particulate matter is one of the most important targets, after the enlargement and upgrade of the plant.  相似文献

The surface runoff from urban areas is one of the most important sources of pollutants emitted into surface waters. Suspended solids which act as a transport vehicle for many anthropogenic pollutants (e.?g. heavy metals, PAH) are a key factor in this regard. The development of efficient measures of storm water runoff treatment thus requires a further differentiation of suspended solids in a fine (clay and silt) and coarse (sand and gravel) fraction. Both fractions show distinctly different characteristics in pollutant loading, transport and retention on urban surfaces and sewer systems. The primary aim of storm water runoff treatment is the reduction of the fine particles which are always highly loaded with anthropogenic pollutants. In contrast the coarse particles are almost unpolluted especially if they have a low organic share. The widespread sedimentation tanks with surface loadings between 10 and 2?m/h are very inefficient. A significant, save and lasting reduction of the emitted load of fine particles requires a considerable reduction of the surface loads. That can be achieved with the installation of lamellar settler or the utilization of the very large volumes of flood management tanks frequently present in urban areas. Filtration plants are highly efficient but there application in urban areas is limited due to their high space demands.  相似文献

A nutrient-transfer model was developed using a mass balance approach to explain the variations in the amounts of soil phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S) found across a range of slopes and aspects in four 10-ha farmlets located in summer-moist hill-country pastures in the southern North Island of New Zealand. The farmlets were continuously grazed by sheep for a period of 12 years, during which time they received a total of 115, 187, 387, 603 and 126, 201, 405, 630 kg ha−1 of P and S, respectively, as single superphosphate (SSP). The model takes account of the effect of topography and local climate on stock behaviour, herbage accumulation and its nutrient content, pasture utilization and the uneven nutrient return through excreta.The developed P model was reliable. The predictions of the transfer model explained 95% of variation in soil P amounts (0–150 mm depth) between farmlets (n=4), 89% of variation between slope units (n=12) and 79% between slope-aspect units (n=36) across all farmlets. When S input parameters were substituted for P parameters, the model was unable to predict the measured soil S levels in any of the four farmlets. Unlike P, S is subject to losses by leaching from these soils. The differences between predicted and measured soil S amounts were used to estimate S leaching losses and pinpoint areas from where they occurred.The concept of modelling the fate of P in P and S fertilized systems and then using the calculated nutrient-transfer functions of the model to evaluate the fate of S provides invaluable information for developing strategies for improving the efficiency of S fertilizer use.  相似文献

Gasholders consist of a floating bell in a tank filled with water. Water provides a seal between the enclosed gas and ambient air. Gasholder emissions come from the contaminated water seal exposed to ambient air and the wet bell wall. The study objectives were to define parameters influencing gasholder emissions, determine the quantities of vinyl chloride (VC) emitted, generate a correlation equation between parameters of influence and mass emissions, and evaluate the efficiency of emission reduction methods. The research project was carried out on a laboratory-scale representation of a gasholder. The classic two-phase resistance model was used successfully to generate a correlation equation, which can be used to calculate the gasholder water seal emissions. A strictly empirical model was generated to estimate the wet wall emissions. Two in situ reduction methods were evaluated with the laboratory installations: floating objects and an oil layer. Both methods showed significant emission reductions, but the oil layer was the most effective. To reduce emissions even further, it is recommended that the water level of the gasholder be set to the lowest achievable level, that a windshield be placed around the water seal perimeter, and that hydrophobic paint be used on the bell wall.  相似文献

Temporal airborne bacterial genetic community structure and meteorological factors were analysed above an urban area in the northwest of France from December 2003 to April 2004 with a sampling strategy considering different time intervals (from an hour to a month). Principal component analysis (PCA) of B-ARISA (Bacterial-Automated Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis) profiles revealed a hierarchy in the temporal variability of bacterial community: daily<weekly<seasonal. Co-inertia analysis between B-ARISA data and meteorological factors demonstrated the correlation between the seasonal variability in the bacterial community and climatic conditions such as temperature and relative humidity, whereas daily and weekly variability seemed likely to be managed by other factors such as anthropogenic activities.  相似文献

Male parental care is typically thought to come at a cost to mate attraction and future mating success. However, it has also been hypothesized that paternal care may be under sexual, as well as natural, selection, such that good fathers actually attract more mates. Here we show experimentally that in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, females prefer to mate with males that provide higher levels of parental care. We manipulated male behavior using (1) different nest sizes and (2) an application of low-O2 water in the nests, and found that females consistently preferred males with elevated levels of care in dichotomous mate choice tests. This complements our earlier study in which we showed that males increase the amount and quality of care they provide in the presence of females. Our results demonstrate that male care may have evolved as a result of sexual selection rather than natural selection alone, and furthermore, that male care may not necessarily be in conflict with mate attraction.  相似文献
