The degradation of 10-30 l of a 1000 ppm aniline solution in 0.050 M Na2SO4 + H2SO4 at pH 3.0 and 40 degrees C by Electro-Fenton and peroxi-coagulation processes at constant current until 20 A has been studied using a pilot flow reactor in recirculation mode with a filter-press cell containing an anode and an oxygen diffusion cathode, both of 100 cm2 area. H2O2 is produced by the two-electron reduction of O2 at the cathode, being accumulated with a current efficiency between 60% and 80% at the first stages of electrolyses performed with a Ti/Pt anode. In the presence of 1 mM Fe2+, less H2O2 is accumulated, but it is not detected using an Fe anode. The Electro-Fenton process with 1 mM Fe2+ and a Ti/Pt or DSA anode yields an insoluble violet polymer, while the soluble total organic carbon (TOC) is gradually removed, reaching 61% degradation after 2 h at 20 A. In this treatment, pollutants are preferentially oxidized by hydroxyl radicals formed in solution from reaction of Fe2+ with H2O2. The peroxi-coagulation process with an Fe anode has higher degradation power, allowing to remove more than 95% of pollutants at 20 A, since some intermediates coagulate with the Fe(OH)3 precipitate formed. Both advanced electrochemical oxidation processes (AEOPs) show moderate energy costs, which increase with increasing electrolysis time and applied current.  相似文献

Several experiments have shown that aboveground net primary productivity increases with plant species richness. The main mechanism proposed to explain this relationship is niche complementarity, which is determined by differences in plant traits that affect resource use. We combined field and laboratory experiments using the most abundant species of the Patagonian steppe to identify which are the traits that determine niche complementarity in this ecosystem. We estimated traits that affect carbon, water, microclimate, and nitrogen dynamics. The most important traits distinguishing among species, from the standpoint of their effects on ecosystem functioning, were potential soil nitrification, rooting depth, and soil thermal amplitude. Additionally, we explored the relationship between trait diversity and aboveground net primary production (ANPP) using a manipulative field experiment. ANPP and the fraction of ANPP accounted for by trait diversity increased with number of traits. The effect of trait diversity decreased as the number of traits increased. Here, the use of traits gave us a mechanistic understanding of niche complementarity in the Patagonian steppe.  相似文献

This article reports the complete mineralization of atrazine. Atrazine has been the most widely used s-triazine herbicide. Atrazine occurs in natural waters and presents a potential danger for public health because atrazine is considered as an endocrine disruptor. The use of chemical, photochemical and photocatalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to decontaminate waters containing atrazine only allowed its conversion into the cyanuric acid as ultimate end products, since it cannot be completely degraded by hydroxyl radicals (OH) produced by these techniques. The same behavior was previously reported for anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton with Pt anode, although better performances were found using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode but without explaining the role of generated OH. Here, the oxidative action of these radicals in such electrochemical AOPs has been clarified by studying the mineralization process and decay kinetics of atrazine and cyanuric acid in separated solutions by anodic oxidation with BDD and electro-Fenton with Pt or BDD anode using an undivided cell with a carbon-felt cathode under galvanostatic conditions. Results showed that electro-Fenton with BDD anode was the more powerful treatment to degrade both compounds. Almost total mineralization, 97% total organic carbon (COT) removal, of atrazine was only feasible by this method with a faster removal of its oxidation intermediates by OH formed at the BDD surface than that formed in the bulk from Fenton reaction, although the latter process caused a more rapid decay of the herbicide. Cyanuric acid was much slowly mineralized mainly with OH produced at the BDD surface, and it was not degraded by electro-Fenton with Pt anode. These results highlight that electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) using a BDD anode are more powerful than the classical electro-Fenton process with Pt or PbO2 anodes.  相似文献

There has been a lengthy debate on whether the abundance of adult reef fishes depends on prerecruitment or postrecruitment processes; however, we still do not have the ability to predict the magnitude of local fish recruitment. Here we show that the success of the leopard grouper (Mycteroperca rosacea) recruitment in the Gulf of California, Mexico, is determined by the availability of nursery habitat, which in turn is strongly correlated to climate conditions. Observational and experimental studies showed that leopard grouper larvae recruit preferentially on shallow rocky bottoms with brown algal (Sargassum spp.) beds, and that abundance of recruits is determined by the availability of Sargassum. The biomass of Sargassum decreases linearly with an increase in the Multivariate El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Index (MEI; an index positively correlated with water temperature and negatively correlated with nutrient availability). We analyzed the relationship between the interannual variation of MEI and the recruitment of the leopard grouper using field estimates of abundance of juvenile groupers. Our results show that there is a nonlinear relationship between recruitment and the oceanographic climate, in that the density of recruits decreases exponentially with increasing MEI. The predictability of leopard grouper recruitment has important implications for fisheries management, since it could allow adaptive management without expensive stock assessment programs.  相似文献

In addition to the biodegradation problems encountered in buildings, exposure of their occupants to moulds is responsible for numerous diseases: infections (invasive nosocomial aspergillosis), immediate or delayed allergies, food-borne infections and different types of irritation. In this context, the aim of our work has been to determine specific chemical tracers for fungal development on construction materials. More generally, by detecting a specific chemical fingerprint of fungal development, our objective was to propose a microbiological alert system which could control systems and/or procedures for the microbiological treatment of indoor areas.

We therefore characterized the chemical emissions from six types of construction material contaminated artificially by moulds. Chemical fingerprints were established for 19 compounds arising specifically from fungal metabolism: 2-ethylhexanoic acid methyl ester, 1-octen-3-ol, 3-heptanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 1,3-octadiene, 2-(5H)-furanone, 2-heptene, -pinene, 2-methylisoborneol, 4-heptanone, 2-methylfuran, 3-methylfuran, dimethyldisulfide, methoxybenzene, a terpenoid and three sesquiterpenes.

Determining the origin of these compounds and their specific links with a growth substrate or fungal species made it possible to judge the pertinence of choosing these compounds as tracers.

Thus the detecting specific volatile organic compounds emitted as from the second day of fungal growth demonstrated that this approach had the advantage of detecting fungal development both reliably and rapidly before any visible signs of contamination could be detected.  相似文献

The use of portable sensors to measure air quality is a promising approach for the management of urban air quality given its potential to improve public participation in environmental issues and to promote healthy behaviors. However, not all the projects that use air quality mobile sensors consider the potential effects of their use on the attitudes and behaviors of non-expert individuals. This study explores the experiences, perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions of 12 participants who used a real-time NO2 sensor over a period of 7 days in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and compares them with 16 participants who did not have access to the device but rather to documentary information. The study design is based on recombined focus groups who met at the beginning and end of a 7-day activity. The results suggest that the experience with the sensors, in comparison with the traditional information, generates greater motivation among participants. Also, that the use of the sensor seems to support a more specific awareness of the problem of air pollution. In relation to risk perception, the textual and visual information seems to generate stronger beliefs of severity among participants. In both groups, beliefs of low controllability and self-efficacy are observed. Neither using the sensor nor reading the documentary information seems to contribute positively in this sense. The results of the study aim to contribute to the design of public involvement strategies in urban air pollution.  相似文献

Here we evaluate the effects of two quantitatively very important components of the water soluble fractions of fuel oils (naphthalene and 1,2-dimethylnaphthalene, hereafter NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively) on the survival, feeding and egg production rates, and viability of eggs of the coastal copepod Paracartia (Acartia) grani. Acute toxicity responses resulted in lethal concentrations (LC50) of 2,535 and 161 μg l−1 for NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively, with no evidence of narcotic effects. Hydrocarbon-specific differences in the toxicity response indicate that sublethal effects (EC50) on feeding by C2-NAPH were likely driven by induced mortality, whereas NAPH has direct negative effects on feeding. Sublethal effects on egg production rates followed a similar detrimental pattern to the one exhibited by feeding rates, suggesting that the lower egg production rates were mediated by the decrease in feeding rates. At the exposure time tested (24 h), the 50% reduction effective concentrations (EC50) determined for sublethal effects were relatively high in comparison with hydrocarbons’ concentrations found under natural circumstances. Long exposure (4 days) of P. grani adults to the tested hydrocarbons at concentrations well below the recorded EC50, however, had no significant effects on feeding, egg production and hatching rates. The viability of the eggs was either not affected or only slightly influenced when healthy eggs were incubated under very high concentrations (up to 6,400 and 700 μg l−1 NAPH and C2-NAPH, respectively). The significance of the effects of oil spills on marine zooplankton communities is discussed in light of the results presented in this study.  相似文献
