This paper presents the preliminary findings of a study on the resilience and recovery of organisations following the Darfield earthquake in New Zealand on 4 September 2010. Sampling included organisations proximal and distal to the fault trace, organisations located within central business districts, and organisations from seven diverse industry sectors. The research captured information on the challenges to, the impacts on, and the reflections of the organisations in the first months of recovery. Organisations in central business districts and in the hospitality sector were most likely to close, while organisations that had perishable stock and livestock were more heavily reliant on critical services. Staff well‐being, cash flow, and customer loss were major concerns for organisations across all sectors. For all organisations, the most helpful factors in mitigating the effects of the earthquake were their relationship with staff members, the design and type of buildings, and critical service continuity or swift reinstatement of services. 相似文献

Understanding prey response to predators and their utilization of sensory cues to assess local predation risk is crucial in determining how predator avoidance strategies affect population demographics. This study examined the antipredator behaviors of two ecologically similar species of Caribbean coral reef fish, Coryphopterus glaucofraenum and Gnatholepis thompsoni, and characterized their responses to different reef predators. In laboratory assays, the two species of gobies were exposed to predator visual cues (native Nassau grouper predator vs. invasive lionfish predator), damage-released chemical cues from gobies, and combinations of these, along with appropriate controls. Behavioral responses indicate that the two prey species differ in their utilization of visual and chemical cues. Visual cues from predators were decisive for both species’ responses, demonstrating their relative importance in the sensory hierarchy, whereas damage-released cues were a source of information only for C. glaucofraenum. Both prey species could distinguish between native and invasive predators and subsequently altered their antipredator responses. 相似文献

Understanding the foraging behavior and spatial distribution of top predators is crucial to gaining a complete understanding of communities. However, studies of top predators are often logistically difficult and it is important to develop appropriate methods for identifying factors influencing their spatial distribution. Sharks are top predators in many marine communities, yet no studies have quantified the habitat use of large predatory sharks or determined the factors that might influence shark spatial distributions. We used acoustic telemetry and animal-borne video cameras ("Crittercam") to test the hypothesis that tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) habitat use is determined by the availability of their prey. We also used Crittercam to conduct the first investigation of foraging behavior of tiger sharks. To test for habitat preferences of sharks, the observed proportion of time in each habitat for each individual was compared to the predicted values for that individual based on correlated random walk and track randomization methods. Although there was individual variation in habitat use, tiger sharks preferred shallow seagrass habitats, where their prey is most abundant. Despite multiple encounters with potential prey, sharks rarely engaged in prolonged high-speed chases, and did not attack prey that were vigilant. We propose that the tiger sharks' foraging tactic is one of stealth, and sharks rely upon close approaches to prey in order to be successful. This study shows that using appropriate analysis techniques and a variety of field methods it is possible to elucidate the factors influencing habitat use and gain insights into the foraging behavior of elusive top predators. 相似文献

Epidemiological data has demonstrated that environmental and/or occupational exposure to mineral particulates may result in the development of pulmonary fibrosis, bronchogenic carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma many years following exposure. It has been suggested that the genotoxic effects of fibrous particulates, such as asbestos, is due in part to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from iron associated with the particulates. However, the molecular mechanisms by which mineral particulates induce ROS that results in genotoxic damage remains unclear. The naturally occurring zeolites, erionite and mordenite share several physiochemical properties but they elicit very different biological responses, with erionite, a fibrous particulate, being highly toxic, and mordenite, a nonfibrous particulate, being relatively benign. We are using these natural zeolites as a model system to determine what physicochemical properties of these zeolites are responsible for their biological response(s) and to evaluate the parameters that influence these responses. The purpose of the present study was to determine the mutagenic potential of erionite and mordenite and to determine whether this mutagenic potential was modulated by iron. The results of this study using the Chinese hamster ovary cell line AS52 demonstrated that erionite was more cytotoxic than mordenite. However, the cytotoxicity of both zeolites was increased in the presence of physiological concentrations of ferrous chloride. Ferrous ions (5-20 microM) significantly (p<0.001) increased the cytotoxicity of mordenite, but only at the highest concentration (16 microg/cm(2)) of mordenite tested. Conversely, only the highest concentration (20 microM) of ferrous ion significantly (p<0.001) increased the cytotoxicity of erionite, but this enhanced cytotoxicity occurred over a wider concentration range (6-16 microg/cm(2)) of erionite. Mordenite was not mutagenic at any of the concentrations tested, and the mutagenic potential of mordenite was not enhanced by the addition of ferrous ion. Conversely, erionite was mutagenic in a dose-response manner at concentrations greater than 6 microg/cm(2) and the mutagenic potential of erionite was significantly enhanced by the addition of ferrous ions. These results suggest that while the cytotoxicity of mordenite and erionite may be related to the ability of these fibers to transport iron into a cell, the different coordination state of iron associated with the two fiber surfaces is critical for inducing genotoxic damage. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Preliminary results from a digital simulation model designed to test time-varying water pricing policies are presented. Stochastic inflows feeding a water supply reservoir are assumed for a hypothetical community with defined demand functions. Prices are allowed to vary as a function of reservoir level, generally rising as reservoir levels fall. Increasing, decreasing and constant rates are tested. It is concluded that varying the price to reflect the increased value of scarce supplies can greatly reduce the risk of water supply shortages. It is also concluded that varying incremental (conservational) pricing policies not only reduces the risk of shortages, but also lowers the average price to the community while rewarding the low consumption user with lower average rates. 相似文献

This paper explores the lessons learned by leaders in agricultural adaptation planning in order to assist other jurisdictions to develop adaptation strategies. It seeks to identify effective institutional, participatory and collaborative processes involved in designing agricultural adaptation strategies at the national and sub-national levels in Germany, Finland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Its methodology is based on review of agricultural adaptation policy documents, research initiatives, stakeholder engagement processes, and cross-sectoral collaborations as well as interviews with key informants such as leaders and actors in adaptation planning. The gathered data show that early adapters have an improved regional and national understanding of climatic impacts, and of the risks to agriculture before the initiation of the planning process. The results indicate that the interplay between bottom-up and top-down initiatives has been crucial in the development of adaptation strategies. The former has provided rich and robust participation in designing, implementing and monitoring adaptations, while the latter was important for prioritizing and legitimizing the development of strategy. It also provided access to high-level decision makers and funding. The results of the study suggest that fostering cross-sectoral collaborations—especially by focusing on broader questions such as the role of agriculture in society—has become an important part of adaptation planning. Finally, our results also stress that adaptation planning in agriculture could be enhanced by skills development and mutual learning across stakeholder groups, research and policy-makers, and through the ongoing interactive development of institutional capabilities. 相似文献

We conducted a laboratory study to assess the feasibility of a washing process with nonionic and anionic surfactants in combination with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) for the simultaneous mobilization of heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from a field-contaminated soil. Unit processes consisting of complexometric extraction and surfactant-assisted mobilization were combined with reagent regeneration and detoxification steps to generate innocuous products. Ten minutes of ultrasonic mixing of the soil with a combination of 30 mL L(-1) surfactant suspension and a sparing quantity (2 mmol) of EDTA mobilized appreciable quantities of PCBs, virtually all of the available Cd, Cu, Mn, and Pb, and lesser amounts of the Zn, Ni, and Cr but only small quantities of Al and Fe. Relative to individual reagents, combinations of surfactant (Brij 98, Triton X-301, or Triton XQS-20) with EDTA did not influence PCB extraction efficiencies perceptibly. Of the three surfactants, the Brij 98 proved to be the most efficient for three successive extractions with a single charge, mobilizing 83% of the PCBs, whereas companion extractions that used fresh reagent each time mobilized 87% of the soil PCB content. The decreased PCB mobilization with the same quantity of anionic surfactant (71 or 68%) resulted from losses during the EDTA regeneration process with zero-valent Mg. In toto, these studies demonstrate that PCB compounds and selected heavy metals can be coextracted efficiently from soil with three successive washes with the same washing suspension containing EDTA and a nonionic surfactant. 相似文献

We conducted a laboratory study to assess the efficiency of nonionic and anionic surfactants in combination with a sparing quantity of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) to simultaneously extract heavy metals (HMs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) compounds from a field-contaminated soil. A soil wash that mobilized both HMs and PCBs was combined with back-extraction with hexane to remove PCBs from the aqueous wash. The aqueous washing suspension was then regenerated by precipitation of the HMs induced by corrosion and hydrolysis of zero-valent Mg to provide a cleaned soil and innocuous extract. Finally, the washing suspension was recycled twice to mobilize more contaminants from the soil particulate fraction. After ultrasonic equilibration, EDTA in admixture with a nonionic surfactant did not appreciably change the efficiency of mobilization of most heavy metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Fe Mn, Ni, and Zn), but did increase the recovery of Cu and Pb. The release of EDTA from HM complexes was efficient for most metals (99%) but was influenced by the chemical characteristics of the surfactant. The EDTA recovery (62-65%) after three cycles of soil washing, hexane back-extraction, and Mg(0) treatment was similar for all reagent combinations. In toto, these studies demonstrate that after treatment with ultrasound, selected heavy metals can be coextracted efficiently from soil with a single washing suspension containing EDTA and a nonionic surfactant. 相似文献
