Abstract

Penicillic acid and ochratoxin A are environmentally important toxic fungal metabolites (mycotoxins) that are synergistic in combination. The effects of penicillic acid on the pancreatic enzyme, :arboxypeptidase A were investigated in vitro and in vivo. A broad range of inhibition in vitro of the enzyme by PA was demonstrated with a half‐maximal inhibitory concentration equal to 1.1 x 10‐4M PA. Inhibition of carboxypeptidase A was time and temperature dependent, and resulted in decreased conversion of parent ochratoxin A to the non‐toxic metabolite, ochratoxin alpha. Studies in vivo demonstrated a penicillic acid‐dependent inhibition of pancreatic carboxypeptidase A activity in the mouse and the chicken following multiple oral exposure. It is postulated that the mode of toxic interaction of the two mycotoxins may be due, in part, to impaired detoxification of ochratoxin A through peni‐cillic acid depletion of carboxypeptidase A activity.  相似文献

Empirical models for predicting the distribution of organisms from environmental data have often focused on principles of ecological niche theory. However, even at large scales, there is little agreement over how to represent the dimensions of a species’ niche. The performance of such models is greatly affected by the nature of species distributional and environmental data. Regional scale distribution models were developed for 30 willow species in Ontario to examine (i) the predictive ability of logistic regression analysis, and (ii) the effects of using different distributional and environmental data sets. Two original measures of model accuracy and over-prediction were employed and evaluated using independent data. Models based on unique combinations of monthly climate data predicted distributions most accurately for all species. Models based on a fixed set of variables, while generating the highest average probabilities of occurrence for certain species with limited ranges, resulted in the greatest under- and over-estimates of willow distributions. Comparisons of models demonstrated climatic patterns among willows of differing habit and habitat. The distribution of dwarf willow species, present only in the Ontario arctic, followed gradients of summer maximum temperatures. The distribution of the tree species in the southerly portions of the province followed gradients of fall and winter minimum temperatures. Regardless of distributional and environmental data input, no algorithm maximized model performance for all species. Individual species models require individual approaches; i.e., the variable selection technique, the set of environmental factors used as predictors, and the nature of species distributional data must be carefully matched to the intended application. An understanding of evolutionary processes enhances the meaningful interpretation of individual species models. Unless sampling bias and species prevalence can be accounted for, models based on collection point data are best used to guide field surveys. While inferred range data may be better suited to determine potential ecological niches, overestimation of species prevalence and environmental tolerance must be recognized. A combination of available distributional data types is recommended to best determine species niches, an important step in developing conservation strategies.  相似文献

Queen conch, Strombus gigas, is a commercially important gastropod that has been exploited throughout the Caribbean islands for thousands of years. Shell middens in the region are the physical record of a long-term fishery and their study can provide valuable information on selectivity patterns followed by fishermen and on resulting morphological shifts reflected by shells. In this study, we surveyed 27 middens located at Los Roques, Venezuela, to assess pre-Columbian and modern fisheries and measure their impact on local populations of queen conch. Pre-Columbian middens, covering a period of approximately 350 years of exploitation (1160–1540 A.D.), were mostly composed of adult shells (89%) and mean length of catch was estimated at 22.4 ± 0.2 cm (mean ± SE). A decrease in mean length of catch was observed throughout the modern fishery regime, estimated at 22.2 ± 0.3 cm in 1950–1971 and 20.0 ± 0.3 cm in 1990–1995. Higher proportions of immature individuals ranging from 48 to 67% were found in modern middens. Additionally, a decrease in mean length of mature individuals was detected throughout the modern fishery regime. The appearance of younger and smaller specimens is considered as a sign of heavy exploitation of local populations of queen conch during modern fisheries. Pre-Columbian middens in contrast, permitted to establish a relative baseline from which to compare values registered throughout modern times.  相似文献

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is located in the remote and sparsely populated mountainous region of Eastern Nepal. It has been locally managed as a decentralized Integrated Conservation and Development Project since 2006, the first of its kind in Asia. Major international donor agencies sponsor programs to empower and strengthen the capacity of local communities to manage their natural resources, while concurrently improving livelihood opportunities. We surveyed 205 randomly selected households throughout the project area to assess the factors that influence household participation roles in management and management groups, and to evaluate how benefits from program involvement were distributed among the community. Overall, the distribution of benefits was unequal: households with higher level participation roles had increased access to financial credit and capacity development trainings. Social variables such as age, level of education among head of households, the highest level education among household adults, and household size predicted participation. The region is economically homogeneous; therefore, economic factors such as remittances, off-farm income and the quantity of landholdings or livestock did not predict household participation roles. Our results demonstrate the importance of targeting and empowering disadvantaged households in decentralized conservation programs, including educating members about the relationship between participation and equitable distribution of benefits.  相似文献

Despite the use of recyclable materials increasing worldwide, waste disposal to landfill remains the most common method of waste management because it is simple and relatively inexpensive. Although landfill disposal is an effective waste management system, if not managed correctly, a number of potential detrimental environmental impacts have been identified including soil and ground water contamination, leachate generation, and gas emissions. In particular, improper post-closure treatment of landfills or deterioration of the conventional clay landfill capping were shown to result in land degradation which required remediation to secure contaminants within the landfill site.Phytoremediation is an attractive technology for landfill remediation, as it can stabilize soil and simultaneously remediate landfill leachate. In addition, landfill phytoremediation systems can potentially be combined with landfill covers (Phytocapping) for hydrological control of infiltrated rainfall. However, for the successful application of any phytoremediation system, the effective establishment of appropriate, desired vegetation is critical. This is because the typically harsh and sterile nature of landfill capping soil limits the sustainable establishment of vegetation. Therefore, the physicochemical properties of landfill capping soils often need to be improved by incorporating soil amendments. Biosolids are a common soil amendment and will often meet these demanding conditions because they contain a variety of plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, as well as a large proportion of organic matter. Such amendment will also ameliorate the physical properties of the capping soils by increasing porosity, moisture content, and soil aggregation. Contaminants which potentially originate from biosolids will also be remediated by activities congruent with the establishment of plants and bacteria.  相似文献

Am Beispiel des l?nderübergreifenden Biosph?renreservates Rh?n wurde das Konzept einer ?kosystemaren Umweltbeobachtung konkretisiert. Die Arbeiten dienten der Operationalisierung der hohen fachlichen Anforderungen des Rats von Sachverst?ndigen für Umweltfragen an eine ‘Allgemeine ?kologische Umweltbeobachtung’, die medienund sektorübergreifende sowie m?glichst weitgehend harmonisierte Datenerhebungen und eine integrierte Datenauswertung vorsieht. Es werden die Bausteine einer stufenweisen Harmonisierung der Datenerhebung und Auswertung vorgestellt. Vertiefend behandelt werden Fragen nach methodischen Ans?tzen für eine nachvollziehbare Auswahl von Beobachtungsr?umen und Messtandorten sowie für die r?umliche Verallgemeinerung von Beobachtungsergebnissen. Das Konzept der ?kosystemaren Umweltbeobachtung nutzt hierfür das Instrument der bundesweiten standort?kologischen Raumgliederung sowie geostatistische Verfahren zur r?umlichen Zusammenführung bestehender Beobachtungsprogramme und Messnetze. Ferner werden M?glichkeiten aufgezeigt, wie mit der Durchführung hydrologischer Gebietsanalysen und mit einem ?kosystemarem Wasserhaushaltsmodell auf der Grundlage verfügbarer Daten integrierende Aussagen zur Entwicklung von Wassereinzugsgebieten getroffen werden k?nnen.  相似文献
