Thirty-four juvenile loggerhead sea turtles captured by trawling from the Charleston, South Carolina (USA), shipping channel
(32°42′N; −79°47′W) between May 2004 and August 2007 were tagged with satellite transmitters to assess the extent to which
they remained near the capture location given their collection along a seasonal migratory corridor. Seventy-five percent of
juveniles were classified as seasonal residents. Migrants predominantly swam north in the spring and nomads wandered south
in the summer, but predictive indicators for non-resident status were not identified. All but one juvenile generally remained
south of 34°N, within 40 km of shore, and in waters <30 m deep throughout the year. Nine of 14 loggerhead sea turtles monitored
during the winter remained exclusively over the continental shelf, three briefly occurred in oceanic habitats, and two foraged
extensively in oceanic habitats. Residents distributed >15 km from shore between spring and autumn were three times as likely
to occur in oceanic habitats in winter. Modest seasonal movements contrasted with adults tagged at similar latitudes and with
juveniles tagged further north and suggest distinct foraging groups within a regional foraging ground. 相似文献

Satellite transmitters were attached to 25 reproductively active and four inactive adult male loggerhead sea turtles (86.6–107.0 cm
SCLmin) captured from the Port Canaveral, FL, USA shipping channel to assess horizontal and vertical distributions. During
the breeding period, male loggerheads aggregated (44% of 755 turtle days) in a 117.6 km2 core area that encompassed the shipping channel. Median dive duration during the breeding period was 27 min (IQR = 15–42
min) and males spent 4% (IQR = 3–5%) of the time at the surface, with significantly shorter dives associated with reproductively
active males. Migrant and resident males dispersed concurrently, with residents shifting > 30 km east across the continental
shelf over a more protracted departure schedule than migrants. Dive duration and time spent at the surface increased through
the fall. Cluster analysis revealed the strongest association for dive duration with sea state during and after the breeding
period, with significantly longer dives during more turbulent conditions. In contrast, univariate associations with surface

Phytophagous insects commonly interact through shared host plants. These interactions, however, do not occur in accordance with traditional paradigms of competition, and competition in phytophagous insects is still being defined. It remains unclear, for example, if particular guilds of insects are superior competitors or important players in structuring insect communities. Gall-forming insects are likely candidates for such superior competitors because of their ability to manipulate host plants, but their role as competitors is understudied. We investigate the effect of invasive populations of an oak gall wasp, Neuroterus saltatorius, on a native specialist butterfly, Erynnis propertius, as mediated by their shared host plant, Quercus garryana. This gall wasp occurs at high densities in its introduced range, where we stocked enclosures with caterpillars on trees that varied in gall wasp density. Biomass production of butterflies was lower in enclosures on high-density than on low-density trees because overwintering caterpillars were smaller, and fewer of them eclosed into adults the following spring. To see if the gall wasp induced changes in foliar quality, we measured host plant quality before and after gall induction on 30 trees each at two sites. We found a positive relationship between gall wasp density and the percentage change in foliar C:N, a negative relationship between gall wasp density and the percentage change in foliar water at one site, and no relationship between the percentage change in protein-binding capacity (i.e., phenolics) and gall-wasp density. Additionally, there was a negative relationship between foliar quality and butterfly performance. Our results provide evidence for a plant-mediated impact of an invasive oak gall wasp on a native butterfly and suggest that gall wasps could act as superior competitors, especially when they occur at high densities. 相似文献

With energy crises looming, conflicts over resource extraction and production are on the rise. For communities lacking voice to participate in these conflicts, community-based organisations and local non-governmental organisations help to unite, communicate, and negotiate with other stakeholders. In this paper we compare two cases that demonstrate the roles of organisations in providing voice to citizenry impacted by environmental justice issues. We use Senecah's concept of Trinity of Voice for the purposes of evaluation. These cases provide contrasting examples of how local/regional organisations chose to either expand their organisation's mission to intervene or stick to a strict reading of their mission thus excluding involvement. In both examples we found that organisational involvement, or lack thereof, influenced how citizens were involved in decision-making with one case leading to legislation protecting property owners from industrial activities, and the other leading to a lack of effective involvement and negatively impacted citizens. 相似文献

Sperm number is often a good predictor of success in sperm competition; however, it has become increasingly clear that, for
some species, variation in probability of paternity cannot be explained by sperm number alone. Intraspecific variation in
ejaculate characteristics, such as the number of viable sperm and sperm longevity, may play an equally important role in determining
fertilization success. Here, we assess variation among ejaculates in three factors that may contribute to fertilization success
(number of sperm per ejaculate, viability, and longevity), in a population of Peron’s tree frog (Litoria peronii). We detected large variation among males in the number of sperm per ejaculate and the proportion of viable sperm within
ejaculates, which could not be explained by variation in either male size or body condition. However, the proportion of viable
sperm released by males increased over the season. Finally, we assessed sperm longevity (proportion viable sperm determined
using a dual-fluorochrome vital dye) at two different temperatures. At 23°C, on average, 75% of sperm remained viable after
2 h, but there were significant differences amongst males with the percentage of viable sperm ranging from 43% to 95%. For
sperm incubated at 4°C, ejaculates varied fivefold in sperm longevity with some males having 50% viable sperm after 5 days.
Our data suggest that ejaculate characteristics (sperm number, viability, and longevity) vary widely in Peron’s tree frog
and may therefore play an important role in determining siring success both in the presence and absence of sperm competition.
We discuss the results in relation to selection on ejaculate traits via natural and sexual selection in this and other amphibians. 相似文献

A review of recent literature in the fields of operations, supply chain, and management indicates there is on-going interest in improving new product development (NPD) performance. Three-dimensional concurrent engineering (3DCE), the simultaneous design of product, process and supply chain have been proposed as a way to improve traditional NPD outcomes, such as reduced time to market, lower costs, and improved customer acceptance. There appears to be a lesser concern associated with the environmental impacts of new products. Environmentally responsible manufacturing (ERM) on new product development focuses on reduced emissions, hazardous materials elimination, and lower product weight without sacrificing functionality. The challenges that face humanity today differ from the past because as the scale of human influence has increased, our biggest challenges have become global in nature, and formerly local problems that could be addressed by shifting populations or switching resources, now aggregate (i.e., "scale up") limiting potential management options. Adaptive management is an approach to natural resource management that emphasizes learning through management based on the philosophy that knowledge is incomplete and much of what we think we know is actually wrong. Adaptive management has explicit structure, including careful elucidation of goals, identification of alternative management objectives and hypotheses of causation, and procedures for the collection of data followed by evaluation and reiteration. It is evident that adaptive management has matured, but it has also reached a crossroads. Practitioners and scientists have developed adaptive management and structured decision making techniques, and mathematicians have developed methods to reduce the uncertainties encountered in resource management, yet there continues to be misapplication of the method and misunderstanding of its purpose. Ironically, the confusion over the term "adaptive management" may stem from the flexibility inherent in the approach, which has resulted in multiple interpretations of "adaptive management" that fall along a continuum of complexity and a priori design. Adaptive management is not a panacea for the navigation of 'wicked problems' as it does not produce easy answers, and is only appropriate in a subset of natural resource management problems where both uncertainty and controllability are high. Nonetheless, the conceptual underpinnings of adaptive management are simple; there will always be inherent uncertainty and unpredictability in the dynamics and behavior of complex social-ecological systems, but management decisions must still be made, and whenever possible, we should incorporate learning into management. 相似文献
