Dynamics in the global protected-area estate since 2004   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Nations of the world have committed to a number of goals and targets to address global environmental challenges. Protected areas have for centuries been a key strategy in conservation and play a major role in addressing current challenges. The most important tool used to track progress on protected-area commitments is the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). Periodic assessments of the world's protected-area estate show steady growth over the last 2 decades. However, the current method, which uses the latest version of the WDPA, does not show the true dynamic nature of protected areas over time and does not provide information on sites removed from the WDPA. In reality, this method can only show growth or remain stable. We used GIS tools in an approach to assess protected-area change over time based on 12 temporally distinct versions of the WDPA that quantify area added and removed from the WDPA annually from 2004 to 2016. Both the narrative of continual growth of protected area and the counter-narrative of protected area removal were overly simplistic. The former because growth was almost entirely in the marine realm and the latter because some areas removed were reprotected in later years. On average 2.5 million km2 was added to the WDPA annually and 1.1 million km2 was removed. Reasons for the inclusion and removal of protected areas in the WDPA database were in part due to data-quality issues but also to on-the-ground changes. To meet the 17% protected-area component of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 by 2020, which stood at 14.7% in 2016, either the rate of protected-area removal must decrease or the rate of protected-area designation and addition to the WDPA must increase.  相似文献

Three shell variables were deemed to be important in the selection of a shell by the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus (L.). These were the weight, volume and aperture width of a shell. Each of these variables were used in multiple regressions against crab weight for 25 Littorina littorea and 25 Thais lapillus shells chosen when both shell species were together in a tank, and for a further 25 L. littorea and 25 T. lapillus when the two shell species were separate. Principal component analysis was performed on the four groups of 25 shells selected, and multiple-regression equations were calculated using the principal components as the new variables. It was found that crabs chose a shell of suitable general dimensions rather than solely on the basis of one shell variable. The advantages of using statistical techniques developed in this paper over previous approaches to shell selection are discussed.  相似文献

Epifaunal crustaceans on turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) and five dominant macroalgae (Anadyomene stellata, Digenia simplex, Halimeda incrassata, Laurencia poitei and Penicillus lamourouxii) were quantitatively sampled bimonthly over a one-year period from September 1979 to September 1980 in a subtropical seagrass meadow in Apalachee Bay, Florida (northeastern Gulf of Mexico). These plant species exhibited a wide range of morphologies, with surface area-to-biomass ratios differing by over 2.5 times. A similar suite of crustaceans occurred on all macrophytes despite differences in shape or architecture among plant species. Relative abundances of many crustaceans, however, varied among plant hosts. Similarity analysis indicated that the epifaunal associates of T. testudinum were distinct from those of the macroalgae. Species richness was generally higher on turtlegrass than on any of the macroalgae. Abundances of total crustaceans per plant biomass or per plant surface area, on the other hand, were greater on all macroalgal species compared to the seagrass. Abundances (per plant biomass or plant surface area) of 14 of the 16 numerically dominant epifaunal species differed significantly among macrophytes. Twelve of the 16 species had greater abundance on one or more macroalgae, while only two species were more abundant on T. testudinum. Almost half of the dominant species had greatest abundances on the branching red alga L. poitei. Although abundances per plant biomass and plant surface area were greater on macroalgae relative to turtlegrass, densities (individuals per meter square of bottom) of animals associated with T. testudinum were significantly greater than those associated with macroalgae, primarily because of the greater abundance of turtlegrass in the grass bed. Both surface area-to-biomass ratios and degree of branching were poorly correlated with epifaunal abundance and number of species. Neither structural feature is an adequate predictor of faunal abundance and species richness among plant species, especially when macrophytes with very different morphologies are compared.  相似文献

In South West England, more than two hundred years of intensive exploitation of metalliferous ore deposits, combined with the natural processes of pedogenesis from mineral-rich parent rocks, has resulted in the creation of a aignificant area of arsenic-contaminated wastes and soils. The scale of arsenic dispersion by natural and anthropogenic processes is such that 722 km2 of land contains concentrations of arsenic in excess of 110 g g–1, more than twice the maximum that might be expected in a normal soil.The general rationale for the clean-up of derelict and contaminated mining sites often includes aesthetic factors and the desirability of preventing the dispersion of contaminants beyond the site boundaries. Only in extreme cases is public health directly invoked as justification for remediation. In South West England, if arsenic constitutes a genuine threat to the public, an increased rate of site remediation would be justified. The primary purpose of this review is to establish whether or not widespread arsenic contamination (principally of soils) has any measurable effects on public health in South West England, and how this might affect current contaminated site remediation policy. The review is based on data from previous research in the region, and other relevant international studies of mining and smelting communities, and other populations exposed to elevated arsenic concentrations. The literature reviewed also includes the determination of the extent and sources of contamination, and pathways between source and man.While the contamination of potable waters in some countries has led to measurable health effects, this scenario has not yet been identified in South West England, and there is little reason to believe that significantly contaminated potable water supplies would escape detection for extended periods of time under the current monitoring regime.In relative terms (based on both globaland local data), one of the most significant links between contaminated soils and humans appears to be contaminated food stuffs. In absolute terms, such exposure is low due to the natural constraints on arsenic uptake by herbage, cereal crops and vegetables, and the food chain does not appear to have been significantly compromised in South West England. Chronic health effects are unlikely as excessive arsenic concentrations in locally grown food crops remain rare.With the problems of confounding medical and social factors, it is not surprising that studies in South West England have failed to identify chronic exposure to arsenic at very low concentrations as a significant health risk. Those studies that indicate otherwise do not stand up to close scrutiny. It appears that the number of additional deaths arising from the widespread arsenic contamination in South West England is small. The relative benefits of a costly statistical study to actually determine the number of additional deaths might be considered minimal, but one major area could benefit from further studies: the sensitivity of certain population sub-groups to environmental arsenic exposure. Of particular interest are children, for whom significant exposure to arsenic via soil ingestion may be occurring.Based on available information, there appears to be no justification for a large programme of site remediation. Resources should, however, be expended on enlightening the general public, and private and governmental organisations as regards the gap between the perceived and actual significance of arsenic contamination in South West England.To whom correspondence should be addressed.  相似文献

Summary Ecological and behavioral data from long-term field studies of known individuals in two closely related squirrel monkey species (Saimiri oerstedi and S. sciureus) were used to examine hypotheses about the source of variation in female bonding among group-living primates. Social relationships in species which live in cohesive groups are thought to depend on the nature of competition for resources. S. oerstedi and S. sciureus both live in large groups and are subject to intense predation. Direct feeding competition both between and within groups is extremely low in S. oerstedi; in this species female relationships are undifferentiated, no female dominance hierarchy is evident and females disperse from their natal group. S. sciureus also experiences very low levels of between-group competition, but within-group direct competition for resources is frequent; this species demonstrates differentiated female relationships, a female dominance hierarchy, and female philopatry. The correlated ecological and social variables found in these two congeners further minimize the minor effects of phylogenetic differences and emphasize the importance of food distribution in determining social characteristics. The widely held assumption that gene frequencies within samples of multi-aged organisms are temporally stable has rarely been tested. In order to test this assumption in the commercially exploited bivalve scallop Aequipecten (Chlamys) opercularis (L.), 12 populations were sampled from around the UK over the period 1988–1990 and each was assayed at four putative polymorphic enzyme loci. Most populations were comprised of 3 to 4 year-classes, distinguishable by annual rings laid down on the shell. Three alleles from each locus were used as discriminant-function variables. Discriminant-function analysis based on allele frequencies averaged for each inividual year-class (45 demes) revealed highly significant inter-site heterogeneity. A posteriori classification of individual year-classes based on the discriminant analysis resulted in assignment of year-classes to the correct home site in 80% of cases. If allozyme neutrality is assumed, the phenomenon of predominant local allele frequency-stability through time within populations which are genetically heterogeneous from one site to another raises the possibility that queen scallop populations may be self-recruiting. Despite a planktonic larval phase lasting up to several weeks, this possibility is not excluded by the available hydrographic data.  相似文献

Samples of the population of Yoldia limatula Say were obtained from the Bideford River, Malpeque Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada, during the summers of 1979 and 1980 by means of a dredge and a Ponar grab sampler. Size frequency analysis demonstrated that individuals in the size range 25- to 35-mm shell length were numerically dominant in May, June and July. Recruitment of juveniles in August resulted in the dominance of individuals of 5 mm and smaller which comprised 50% of the population at that time. The overall sex ratio was 48.8% males to 51.2% females. From annual lengths measured at successive winter growth bands it was determined that one-yr olds attained a shell length of between 13.8 and 17.7 mm, two-yr olds between 26.7 and 28.0 mm, three-yr olds between 33.8 and 35.2 mm, and foru-yr olds had a mean length of 38.7 mm. Y. limatula produced a croppable annual yield of between 1.19 and 2.65 g dry tissue weight m-2 with P/B ratios of 0.65 and 1.45 respectively.  相似文献
