Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are high production volume chemicals used as flame retardants for plastics and textiles. They are currently produced in quantities exceeding 20,000 t/y. Despite this fact, the correct stereochemistry of most HBCDs is still not known. Six stereocenters are formed during bromination of cyclododecatrienes, resulting in mixtures of different stereoisomers. Considering all elements of symmetry, 16 different stereoisomers including six pairs of enantiomers as well as 4 meso forms are possible theoretically. Recently, we isolated 8 of the 16 possible stereoisomers from a technical HBCD mixture and assigned their relative configurations. Herein, we report on the isolation of 6 enantiomerically pure alpha-, beta-, and gamma-HBCDs, obtained from preparative chiral-phase liquid chromatography, and we present their absolute configurations, which were determined from X-ray diffraction analysis. The absolute configuration of (-) alpha-HBCD was found to be (1R,2R,5S,6R,9R,10S), while the one of (+) beta-HBCD is assigned to (1S,2S,5S,6R,9S,10R), whereas the one of (-) gamma-HBCD corresponds to (1S,2S,5S,6R,9R,10S). The given structural information allows the unambiguous identification of the six most important HBCD stereoisomers, which typically account for more than 95% of technical HBCDs. In addition, we compared the solid-state conformations of racemic and enantiomerically pure alpha-, beta-, and gamma-HBCDs. In all cases, vicinal dibromides adopted a synclinal (sc) conformation with torsion angles of 69+/-6 degrees. A unique structural motive was common to all examined HBCD solid-state conformations. This conserved structure was described as an extended triple turn consisting of an arrangement of three pairs of synclinal and two antiperiplanar torsion angles.  相似文献

Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are high production volume chemicals currently produced in quantities exceeding 20000ty(-1). They are used as flame retardants for plastics and textiles. HBCDs are thermally labile compounds, rapidly decomposing at temperatures above 250 degrees C to form bromine radicals, which scavenge other radicals formed during pyrolysis. But certain HBCD stereoisomers must reach the environment without decomposition, because their levels in soils, sediments, and biota are increasing worldwide. The fate of individual HBCD stereoisomers during production, product use, disposal, and transformation in the environment remains unclear. Herein we report on the thermally induced, highly selective isomerization of (+) and (-)beta-HBCD. Regio- and stereoselective migration of only two of the six bromine atoms resulted in the racemization of both beta-HBCDs. First order rate constants (k(rac)) increased from 0.005, 0.011, 0.021, to 0.055min(-1) at 130, 140, 150, and 160 degrees C, corresponding to half life times tau(1/2) of 143, 63, 29, and 14min, respectively. From the deduced kinetic model, we conclude that any thermal treatment of enantiomerically enriched beta-HBCDs in the range of 100-160 degrees C will result in a loss of most optical activity within few hours. The simultaneous inversion of two asymmetric centers occurred with perfect stereocontrol. Selectively, vicinal dibromides with the RR- and the SS-configurations migrated at these temperatures. An intramolecular reaction mechanism with a four-center transition state is postulated, based on the obtained stereoisomer pattern and the observed reaction kinetics. Crystal structure analysis revealed that all vicinal dibromides in beta-HBCDs prefer synclinal (gauche) conformations. However, an antiperiplanar (staggered) conformation is assumed to facilitate the concerted 1.2-shifts of both bromine atoms, resulting in an inversion of both neighboring carbon atoms. First experiments with other HBCD stereoisomers suggest that the presented isomerization mechanism is of relevance for those stereoisomers as well.  相似文献

Leading societies toward a more sustainable, equitably shared, and environmentally just future requires elevating and strengthening conversations on the nonmaterial and perhaps unquantifiable values of nonhuman nature to humanity. Debates among conservationists relating to the appropriateness of valuing ecosystems in terms of their human utility have eclipsed the more important and impactful task of expressing conservation concerns in terms that are meaningful to diverse stakeholders. We considered the wide global diversity of perspectives on the biosocial complex—the relationships and interactions between all living species on Earth—and argue that humanity's best chance for effective conservation is to take a pluralistic approach that engages seriously with the worldviews of all stakeholders. Many worldviews—particularly those in indigenous cultures—place a higher value on the spiritual and nonmaterial aspects than what is often represented by the discourse surrounding Western conservation policy. Alternative framings of the biosocial complex that recognize nature's intrinsic value can be powerful motivators for social change and for local-scale conservation efforts. At a national and international level, changing ethical framings of human relationships with nature have started influencing conceptions of human rights relating to the environment and of the rights of nature itself. This change has led to an increased role of the judiciary in promoting environmental sustainability and promoting justice for groups who are most often affected by environmental harms. We hope our essay will motivate the scientific community to change its own perception of what a sound and sustainable relationship between humanity and other species should be and will help citizens become active environmental subjects, connected to the ecosystems around them.  相似文献

Across the Arctic, heavy rain-on-snow (ROS) is an "extreme" climatic event that is expected to become increasingly frequent with global warming. This has potentially large ecosystem implications through changes in snowpack properties and ground-icing, which can block the access to herbivores' winter food and thereby suppress their population growth rates. However, the supporting empirical evidence for this is still limited. We monitored late winter snowpack properties to examine the causes and consequences of ground-icing in a Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) metapopulation. In this high-arctic area, heavy ROS occurred annually, and ground-ice covered from 25% to 96% of low-altitude habitat in the sampling period (2000-2010). The extent of ground-icing increased with the annual number of days with heavy ROS (> or = 10 mm) and had a strong negative effect on reindeer population growth rates. Our results have important implications as a downscaled climate projection (2021-2050) suggests a substantial future increase in ROS and icing. The present study is the first to demonstrate empirically that warmer and wetter winter climate influences large herbivore population dynamics by generating ice-locked pastures. This may serve as an early warning of the importance of changes in winter climate and extreme weather events in arctic ecosystems.  相似文献

The 49,XXXXY syndrome is a rare sex chromosome anomaly with an approximate incidence of 1 in 85 000 male live births. The diagnosis is usually ascertained postnatally by the association of mental retardation, variable growth deficiency, Down syndrome-like facial dysmorphy, hypogenitalism and other malformations, especially involving the heart and skeleton. Prenatal diagnosis of the pentasomy 49,XXXXY is generally fortuitous and sonographic features have rarely been described in the literature. We report here on two cases of 49,XXXXY syndrome diagnosed prenatally because of sonographic abnormalities. In the first, amniocentesis was performed at 26 weeks' gestation for polyhydramnios, unilateral clubfoot and micropenis. In the second, a karyotype was carried out on chorionic villi at 13 weeks' gestation for cystic hygroma. These observations and the six previously reported cases demonstrate that cystic hygroma in first or second trimester of pregnancy may be associated with sex chromosome aneuploidy other than Turner syndrome. Moreover, they emphasize the importance of detailed sonographic examination in the second trimester, as small penis and abnormal posturing of the lower extremities are very suggestive of the 49,XXXXY syndrome. Landfills are a major anthropogenic source of the greenhouse gas methane (CH(4)). However, much of the CH(4) produced during the anaerobic degradation of organic waste is consumed by methanotrophic microorganisms during passage through the landfill-cover soil. On a section of a closed landfill near Liestal, Switzerland, we performed experiments to compare CH(4) fluxes obtained by different methods at or above the cover-soil surface with below-ground fluxes, and to link methanotrophic activity to estimates of CH(4) ingress (loading) from the waste body at selected locations. Fluxes of CH(4) into or out of the cover soil were quantified by eddy-covariance and static flux-chamber measurements. In addition, CH(4) concentrations at the soil surface were monitored using a field-portable FID detector. Near-surface CH(4) fluxes and CH(4) loading were estimated from soil-gas concentration profiles in conjunction with radon measurements, and gas push-pull tests (GPPTs) were performed to quantify rates of microbial CH(4) oxidation. Eddy-covariance measurements yielded by far the largest and probably most representative estimates of overall CH(4) emissions from the test section (daily mean up to ~91,500μmolm(-2)d(-1)), whereas flux-chamber measurements and CH(4) concentration profiles indicated that at the majority of locations the cover soil was a net sink for atmospheric CH(4) (uptake up to -380μmolm(-2)d(-1)) during the experimental period. Methane concentration profiles also indicated strong variability in CH(4) loading over short distances in the cover soil, while potential methanotrophic activity derived from GPPTs was high (v(max)~13mmolL(-1)(soil air)h(-1)) at a location with substantial CH(4) loading. Our results provide a basis to assess spatial and temporal variability of CH(4) dynamics in the complex terrain of a landfill-cover soil.  相似文献

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), and decabromodiphenyl ether (DecaBDE) are high production volume chemicals used as flame retardants in plastics for products such as electronic equipment, insulation panels, and textiles. The environmental safety of brominated flame retardants, especially their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity is a controversial topic. Here, we studied and compared the degradation of TBBPA, HBCD, and DecaBDE under anaerobic conditions in digested sewage sludge. The half-lives of TBBPA and a technical HBCD mixture were 0.59 and 0.66 d, respectively. The fact that (+/-)-alpha-HBCD exhibited an almost doubled half-life compared to (+/-)-beta-HBCD and (+/-)-gamma-HBCD is an important finding with respect to the discussion on the persistence of individual HBCD stereoisomers and the recent reports on strong relative enrichment of alpha-HBCD in biota. We found no statistically significant enantioselective degradation of alpha-, beta-, or gamma-HBCD. Half-lives of TBBPA and a technical HBCD mixture were not dependent on the presence of additional nutrients or primers. Concentrations of TBBPA and a technical HBCD mixture decreased also in sterile control samples, however, at a rate that was more than a factor of 50 smaller than in incubations under non-sterile conditions. Compared to TBBPA and a technical HBCD mixture, DecaBDE exhibited a much longer half-life of 7 x 10(2)d in the same system. Pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants decreased according to the following sequence: TBBPA congruent with(+/-)-gamma-HBCD congruent with(+/-)-beta-HBCD>(+/-)-alpha-HBCD>DecaBDE. Preliminary investigations suggest that degradation of TBBPA, HBCD, and DecaBDE occurs in full-scale anaerobic digesters, as well.  相似文献
