The purification of water by the electro-removal process using different metal electrodes is widely used in different spheres of science and industry. The comparative characteristics under galvanostatic conditions of zinc (Zn), brass (Cu-Zn), copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) anodes for arsenic (As) removal from water by the electro-removal process in laboratory scale experiments were determined at current densities of 1.5, 3 and 12 mA cm(-2) for 60 min, from a solution containing different concentrations of As(v) (from 70 to 130 microg L(-1)). The results at these different current densities indicated that rapid arsenic removal was achieved at higher current densities (12 mA cm(-2)), with the chemical precipitation of arsenate complexes. The removal of As was relatively efficient, with the following tendency (at 1.5 mA cm(-2)): Fe (>93%) congruent with Zn (>93%) > Cu-Zn (>73%) >Cu (>67%), these efficiencies were relatively independent of the removal rate for all the initial arsenic concentrations investigated. This behaviour is attributed to the electrochemical intrinsic properties of the most active metals, and to the chemical precipitation reactions following the electrochemical process, iron being the most attractive metal for arsenic removal for practical applications. 相似文献
Ovarian macroscopical analysis, histological validation and field sampling procedures were used to evaluate the variability
in reproductive traits of the mole crab Emerita brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935 (Decapoda: Hippidae) in two exposed sandy beaches of Uruguay with contrasting morphodynamics. All developmental
stages involved in the complex life cycle exhibited lower abundance, individual size and temporal occurrence in a harsh reflective
beach, compared with a more benign dissipative environment. In addition, this population showed more compressed events of
the reproductive cycle (e.g oogenesis, encounter of potential mate and female parental care) and recruitment period. However,
the beginning of the vitellogenesis, ovary maturity, male sexual differentiation and ending of spermatogenesis occurred at
smaller sizes under dissipative conditions. These results disagree with the recent findings of delayed sexual maturity in
dissipative beaches. We postulate that, in dissipative conditions, high food availability might allow an overlapping of reproductive
and moulting processes, and thus females may reach optimum size and sexual maturity with fewer moults than in reflective beaches.
Hence, reproductive responses must be considered not only in relation to environmental harshness, but also in the context
of life history traits and their phylogenetic and allometric constraints.

The growing complexity and global nature of wildlife poaching threaten the survival of many species worldwide and are outpacing conservation efforts. Here, we reviewed proximal and distal factors, both social and ecological, driving illegal killing or poaching of large carnivores at sites where it can potentially occur. Through this review, we developed a conceptual social–ecological system framework that ties together many of the factors influencing large carnivore poaching. Unlike most conservation action models, an important attribute of our framework is the integration of multiple factors related to both human motivations and animal vulnerability into feedbacks. We apply our framework to two case studies, tigers in Laos and wolverines in northern Sweden, to demonstrate its utility in disentangling some of the complex features of carnivore poaching that may have hindered effective responses to the current poaching crisis. Our framework offers a common platform to help guide future research on wildlife poaching feedbacks, which has hitherto been lacking, in order to effectively inform policy making and enforcement. 相似文献
The prediction of the potential hazards associated to accidental liquefied natural gas (LNG) spills has motivated a number of different studies including experimental and numerical approaches. Most of these studies focus on dispersion predictions, however there is limited information regarding source term of it: liquid spill and vaporization. There is a need of further improvements on the understanding of these phenomena and the quantification of the most important parameters that can affect them.The vaporization of cryogenic liquids is governed by the heat transfer phenomena including conduction, convection and thermal radiation mechanisms. The present work investigates the contribution of each of these heat transfer modes to the vaporization rate of cryogenic liquid nitrogen (LN2) contained in a Dewar flask using well controlled and instrumented laboratory scale experiments. LN2 vaporization rate was measured with individually controllable contributions from convective (generated by an electric fan) and thermal radiative (generated by light bulb) heat transfer in the presence of a baseline conductive heat transfer rate.In both cases of convection and radiation analysis the experimental study showed that they can play a significant role in the vaporization rate of LN2. It was observed that the radiative heat absorbed by the LN2 during the vaporization experiment represents only 50%–65% of the incident radiation that would reach the LN2 pool surface if no vapour was present. Convective heat transfer generated by the fan was shown to have had the most significant contribution to the total heat transfer. As expected, this contribution was significantly higher than the one from bulb radiation. The experimental data also showed that the liquid level in the Dewar play a key role in the resulting amount of convective heat transfer. This could be attributed to the fact that lower liquid level the side walls of the Dewar were high enough to hold a layer of vapour and limit air motion directly above the liquid surface, thus limiting the heat transfer by convection. 相似文献

The widespread destruction that follows large‐scale natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, challenges the efficacy of traditional temporary housing methods in providing adequate solutions to housing needs. Recognising these housing challenges, the Congress of the United States allocated, in 2006, USD 400 million to the Department of Homeland Security to support Alternative Housing Pilot Programs, which are intended to explore the possibilities of providing permanent and affordable housing to displaced families instead of traditional temporary housing. This paper presents a new methodology and optimisation model to identify the optimal configurations of post‐shelter housing arrangements to maximise the overall net socioeconomic benefit. The model is capable of quantifying and optimising the impacts of substituting temporary housing with alternative housing on the social and economic welfare of displaced families as well as the required additional costs of doing so. An application example is presented to illustrate the use of the model and its capabilities. 相似文献
Powder mixing is often carried out in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Electrostatic charges generated on polymer powders during mixing may lead to electrostatic problems due to the poor conductivity of those powders. In this study, we investigated the electrostatic charges, surface potential, and apparent volume resistivity of sample powders using a simple mixing device utilizing the Faraday cup method. To neutralize the charged powders, we also applied an AC-type ionizer in the mixing study. A commercial polyethylene powder with a mean particle size of 585 μm was tested in this experiment. The charge-to-mass ratios at the end of 600 s of mixing were ?0.075 nC/g at 295 rpm agitation speed, ?0.21 nC/g at 495 rpm, and ?0.31 nC/g at 660 rpm, high enough to cause electrostatic agglomeration and adhesion. The electric fields based on the surface potential on the powders were several hundreds of V/cm, too small to give rise to brush discharge. The apparent volume resistivity of powders estimated by a simple measurement system is 1.0 × 1016 Ωm, in reasonable agreement with that acquired by the conventional test cell method (5.9 × 1015 Ωm). The charging level on the polymer powders was reduced with an AC-ionizer. 相似文献
Historically, landfills have been the dominant alternative for the ultimate disposal of municipal solid waste. This paper addresses the problem of siting a new landfill using an intelligent system based on fuzzy inference. The proposed system can accommodate new information on the landfill site selection by updating its knowledge base. Several factors are considered in the siting process including topography and geology, natural resources, socio-cultural aspects, and economy and safety. The system will rank sites on a scale of 0-100%, with 100% being the most appropriate one. A weighting system is used for all of the considered factors. The results from testing the system using different sites show the effectiveness of the system in the selection process. 相似文献
The aim of our study is to evaluate the impact of Bousfer desalination plant brine discharges on the Algerian west coast, on a natural population of the marine gastropod mollusc Patella rustica. The effects of a chronic exposure to such discharges are complex to understand due to the combined effects of environmental physico-chemical parameters (e.g., high salinity) and different pollutants that can modulate the physiological responses of this species to stress. In this context, we assessed the biological effects in a marine species P. rustica, by a multibiomarker approach that provided information on the health status of organisms in response to such an environmental stress. We measured biomarkers in the whole soft tissues of limpets as indicators of neurotoxicity (AChE activity), oxidative stress (CAT, SOD, GR, and GPx activities), biotransformation (GST), oxidative damage (LPO through TBARS levels), and genotoxicity (CSP 3-like activity). In parallel, hydrological parameters were measured in the Bay of Oran, at four selected sites: site H considered as a “hotspot,” located at Bousfer desalination plant; two other sites E and W, at the east and the west of H respectively; finally, site R “reference” located in Madragh, which is considered as a remote clean site. Our analyses revealed that the activities of antioxidant defense enzymes reached the highest levels in P. rustica collected from site H. The activation of antioxidant defense system in these organisms translated the alteration of their status health, reflecting a level of environmental disruption generated by the desalination plant brine discharges and the high salinity in this area. We also observed that the tissues of limpets collected from site H as well as the two other sites, E and W, had undergone molecular damage, confirmed by the high levels of CSP 3-like activity. This damage resulted from chronic exposure to environmental conditions, potentially genotoxic, due to the desalination plant discharges. The present results indicate the adverse impact of brine effluents from desalination plants on marine fauna and suggest the need for a more consistent approach to environmental management of brine discharges.
