A biodiversity gap analysis is a method, now usually employing geographic information systems, for identifying deficiencies in existing biodiversity protection. Key principles of gap analysis were applied to a region of southcentral Ohio (U.S.A.) known as The Edge of Appalachia as part of a detailed, large-scale (1:24,000) nature reserve design project. By combining Landsat thematic mapper imagery with ancillary data (bedrock geology, elevation, slope, aspect, and stream proximity), a rule-based model was developed to differentiate and map the natural plant communities present in the 378-km2 study area. The model was then used to generate a map depicting the most likely presettlement plant community distributions for the area. These two maps were compared against the 5273 ha owned and managed by state and local conservation organizations. For the current natural plant community distributions, regional land-protection efforts represented each plant community proportionally; however, comparison with the presettlement vegetation clearly identified serious historical losses of several plant community types. Our results suggest that future land acquisitions should emphasize those plant community types that were once more widespread in the region prior to European settlement, a time when natural processes were less compromised by human activity. Current and historical plant-community mapping results were combined and evaluated using the ownership parcel as the fundamental mapping unit. From parcel-based desirability maps a conservation plan was developed that addressed community deficiencies using a representation target of25% for each community type, as derived from the modeled presettlement landscape.  相似文献

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) systems are typically designed based on the results of a vadose‐zone pumping test (transient or steady‐state) using a pressure criterion to establish the zone of influence (ZOI). A common problem associated with pressure‐based SVE design is overestimating the ZOI of the extraction well. As a result, design strategies based upon critical pore‐ gas velocity (CPGV) have become more common. Field tests were conducted at the Savannah River Site (SRS) to determine the influence of a vapor extraction well based upon both a pressure and pore‐ gas velocity design criterion. The results from these tests show that an SVE system designed based upon a CPGV is more robust and will have shorter cleanup times due to increased flow throughout the treatment zone. Pressure‐based SVE design may be appropriate in applications where soil gas containment is the primary objective; however, in cases where the capture and removal of contaminated soil gas is the primary objective, CPGV is a better design criterion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) can be an effective and efficient means of mitigating climate change. However, the perceived equity in the distribution of financial incentives for REDD could also emerge as a critical issue in international negotiations. The design of reference levels, which provide the benchmark for crediting emissions reductions, affects the economic incentives for national participation in a REDD mechanism and thus the overall willingness to reach an agreement on REDD. This paper compares the equity impacts of five proposed reference level designs using a partial-equilibrium model. Tradeoffs among equity, environmental effectiveness and cost-efficiency indicate the proposals trigger similar aggregate emissions reductions but lead to different outcomes in efficiency and alternative measures of equity. If equity across countries is measured as the financial incentive provided relative to a country's forest carbon stock, then a REDD mechanism compensating a uniform share of at-risk carbon stocks is the most equitable. On the other hand, if equity is evaluated as the financial incentive relative to the opportunity costs of participating in REDD, then the most equitable approach would be compensating emissions reductions but withholding a part of the payments to compensate for carbon stocks, which also encourages broader country participation under our model.  相似文献

To support decision making on complex environmental issues, models are often used to explore the potential impacts of different management alternatives on the environmental system. We explored how different model outcomes affect decision making. Two topics have our particular interest, namely (1) the influence of quantification of qualitative information on decision making, and (2) the influence of reflecting uncertainty in the model outcomes on decision making. We set up a survey, in which we use a case study describing a decision making situation in strategic river management. The survey was disseminated through the Internet. From the results we conclude that the quantification of information in itself does not necessarily change preferences, although the outcomes suggest that preferences converge when based on quantified information. When confronted with uncertainty information, respondents show a preference for the alternative with the smallest chance of negative impacts. The study shows that, whereas the modelling community often strives to provide the policy process with as good, and as detailed information as is possible, their assumption that this will automatically lead to ‘better’ decision making is not self-evident.  相似文献

The Antarctic marine ecosystem changes seasonally, forming a temporal continuum of specialised niche habitats including open ocean, sea ice and meltwater environments. The ability for phytoplankton to acclimate rapidly to the changed conditions of these environments depends on the species’ physiology and photosynthetic plasticity and may ultimately determine their long-term ecological niche adaptation. This study investigated the photophysiological plasticity and rapid acclimation response of three Antarctic diatoms—Fragilariopsis cylindrus, Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata and Chaetoceros sp.—to a selected range of temperatures and salinities representative of the sea ice, meltwater and pelagic habitats in the Antarctic. Fragilariopsis cylindrus displayed physiological traits typical of adaptation to the sea ice environment. Equally, this species showed photosynthetic plasticity, acclimating to the range of environmental conditions, explaining the prevalence of this species in all Antarctic habitats. Pseudo-nitzschia subcurvata displayed a preference for the meltwater environment, but unlike F. cylindrus, photoprotective capacity was low and regulated via changes in PSII antenna size. Chaetoceros sp. had high plasticity in non-photochemical quenching, suggesting adaptation to variable light conditions experienced in the wind-mixed pelagic environment. While only capturing short-term responses, this study highlights the diversity in photoprotective capacity that exists amongst three dominant Antarctic diatom species and provides insight into links between ecological niche adaptation and species’ distribution.  相似文献

This study determined the metal levels in sediments and tissues of a common estuarine fish, Tetractenos glaber (smooth toadfish), from two metal contaminated and two reference estuaries near Sydney, Australia. Metal levels were highest in sediments and fish from contaminated estuaries. Gonads contained the highest metal levels followed by muscle, gill and liver. Metal accumulation was gender-dependant (e.g. male gonads were >20 times higher in As than females; female gills were >30 times higher than males for Pb). Cadmium, Pb and Ni levels in fish tissues reflected sediment levels, indicating sediment and/or dietary metal uptake. Levels of As, Co, Cd & Pb in gills showed similar patterns to other tissues, suggesting that metals may have been taken up by gills through contaminated water. Similar metal patterns in tissues and sediments suggest more than one uptake pathway. This study indicates that multiple factors influence metal accumulation in fish.  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition of acidic cloud water is thought to be one of the causes for the recent forest decline in industrialized areas of the world. The present paper presents results from the Mountain Acid Deposition Program (MADPro), a part of EPA's Clean Air Status and Trends Network, (CASTnet). We used automated cloud water collectors at three selected mountain sites (Whiteface Mt., NY; Whitetop Mt., VA; and Clingman's Dome, TN) to take hourly samples from non-precipitating clouds during temperate (non- freezing) seasons of each year from 1994 to 1997. Samples were promptly analyzed for pH, conductivity, and concentration of dissolved ions. Cloud liquid water content (LWC) and meteorological parameters were measured at each site. Mean cloud frequencies and LWC of clouds were higher at Whiteface Mt., NY, than in the Southern Appalachians. The four most prevalent ions found in cloud water samples were usually, in order of decreasing concentration: sulfate (SO2−4) hydrogen (H+), ammonium (NH4+), and nitrate (NO3). Within cloud events the concentration of these major ions tended to co-vary. Typically there was an inverse relationship between LWC of the cloud and ionic concentration of the cloud water. During the sampling season, the highest ionic concentrations were seen during mid-summer. Ionic concentrations of samples from the southern sites were significantly higher than samples from Whiteface Mt., but further analysis indicates that this is at least partially due to the north–south difference in the LWC of clouds. MADPro results are shown to be comparable with previous studies of cloud chemistry in North America.  相似文献
