Ethnobotanical knowledge plays a significant role in plant diversity conservation and the curing of various ailments in remote rural areas of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). A total of 53 plant species from 27 families have been documented from the Byans valley and are used traditionally for the treatment of various diseases. Valley inhabitants have maintained a symbiotic relationship between natural resources and their cultural belief system by developing sacred forests/groves which conserve the region's plant diversity pool. Information on sacred natural sites and traditional beliefs was documented in order to understand the environmental and conservationist implications of these rules and practices. The study provides comprehensive information about eroding traditional knowledge and biodiversity conservation practices. This study could be a pilot to strengthen the conservation practices and sustainable utilization of frequently used bioresources by understanding the traditional knowledge system and conservation ethics of tribal communities in the Himalayan region. 相似文献

In recent years, the problem of fluoride in Nawa tehsil (Nagaur district) has reached at an alarming proportion. In the last
decades, the water table of the Nawa tehsil has fallen. With the lowering of the water table, the amount of fluoride has increased
in the subsoil water which is used by the villagers when drawn through hand pumps, tube wells etc. So the present study illustrates
the groundwater quality of randomly selected villages of Nawa tehsil. The highest fluoride concentration was found in Rulaniyo

The aim of the present study was to devise and validate an appropriate treatment process for disposal of hazardous barium and cyanide waste into a landfill at a Common Hazardous Waste Treatment Storage Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF). The waste was generated during the process of hardening of steel components and contains cyanide (reactive) and barium (toxic) as major contaminants. In the present study chemical fixation of the contaminants was carried out. The cyanide was treated by alkali chlorination with calcium hypochlorite and barium by precipitation with sodium sulfate as barium sulfate. The pretreated mixture was then solidified and stabilized by binding with a combination of slag cement, ordinary Portland cement and fly ash, molded into blocks (5 × 5 × 5 cm) and cured for a period of 3, 7 and 28 days. The final experiments were conducted with 18 recipe mixtures of waste + additive:binder (W:B) ratios. The W:B ratios were taken as 80:20, 70:30 and 50:50. The optimum proportions of additives and binders were finalized on the basis of the criteria of unconfined compressive strength and leachability. The leachability studies were conducted using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure. The blocks were analyzed for various physical and leachable chemical parameters at the end of each curing period. Based on the results of the analysis, two recipe mixtures, with compositions – 50% of [waste + (120 g Ca(OCl)2 + 290 g Na2SO4) kg?1 of waste] + 50% of binders, were validated for in situ stabilization into a secured landfill of CHWTSDF. 相似文献

The surface water qualities of Hussainsagar, an eutrophic urban lake in the midst of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad
(India) receiving large quantities of external inputs—both untreated municipal sewage containing industrial effluents, and
treated sewage, a large number of annually immersed idols of God and Goddess, and intense boating activities were assessed
in relation to the concentration of elements including heavy metals of the water along the necklace road of the lake. Elemental
analyses of water using ICP-MS revealed 26 elements including heavy metals—As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, Ba, Zn, Mo,
V, Co, Ag, Sr, Rb, Mg, K, Ca, Al, Si, Sb, Na, Li, and B, in the surface water of the lake. Of these, the first 15 elements
were found in elevated concentrations in the water at the outfall point of the untreated municipal sewage (site 3), which
was the main dominating source of contamination of the lake water while Cu and Sb were recorded in higher concentrations at
the outfall of treated effluent from Sewage Treatment Plant, and three elements (Ba, Si, and B) were in higher concentration
at the sites of outfall of sewage flowing from an oxygenated pond (site 4), Ca, Zn, and Sr, at the site immersed with idols
(site 1), and Pb, Ag, and Al at the center of the lake (site 5) with intense boating activities. Concentrations of most of
these elements exceeded the maximum permissible limits of national (Indian Council Medical Research) standards for drinking
water. The concentrations of most of the elemental contaminants showed significant positive correlations between them. 相似文献

The average initial deposits of carbaryl were observed to be 1.4 and 3.1?mg?kg?1, respectively, following four applications of the insecticide at 4.95 and 9.9?kg active ingredient per hectare. Residues of carbaryl dissipated below its limit of quantification of 50?µg?kg?1 after 7 and 10 days at single and double the application dosage, respectively. The half-life values (t 1/2) of carbaryl were worked out to be 1.3 and 0.7 days, respectively, at single and double dosages. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) for carbaryl has been fixed at 8?µg?kg?1 body weight per day. Keeping in view the residues of carbaryl observed one day after the last application, a child of 10?kg and an adult of 60?kg will have an intake of 77 and 154?µg carbaryl after consumption of 100 and 200?g grapes, in comparison to its ADI of 80 and 480?µg; thus, no health risk is to be expected. Therefore, a waiting period of 1 day has been suggested for the safe consumption of carbaryl-treated grapes to avoid any health hazards. 相似文献

Traditional Central Himalaya societies face a range of socio-economic and environmental problems. The potential of science and technology has not yet been adequately and appropriately harnessed to overcome the development constraints posed by the fragile Himalayan environment. Thus there is a need for large-scale establishment of technology resource centers. The Garhwal Unit of GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development established rural technology demonstration and training centers in three different agroecological zones between 550 and 2200 m asl and in 13–15 locations, with suitable technologies based on appropriate use and management of locally available bio-resources that ensure people participation. About 35 on-site training courses were organised for about 2329 participants. The participants were given on-site demonstrations, training and technical know-how on various technologies, to enable farmers to better understand problems faced during implementation of new technologies for sustainable management of natural resources. An action research framework and training manuals were also developed in consideration of local socio-economic condition. The documentation and analysis of research (quantitative and qualitative) and data related to cost–benefit analysis of the technologies adopted by farmers generated through this study has created wider sharing of farmer training outputs, at farm level, amongst the scientific communities and with policy planners. 相似文献

The rapid increase in population together with unplanned disposal of effluents from various industries has resulted in accumulation of various heavy metals like As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in soil ecosystem which ultimately causes DNA damage in living systems. Considering this, the present study was designed to evaluate the content of various heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Co, Hg, Mn, Ni, Zn) and genotoxicity/mutagenicity of soil samples collected from the outskirts of two industries viz. zinc coating industry (SI) and copper sulphate manufacturing industry (SII) employing Allium root anaphase aberration assay (A/RAAA) and Ames assay. The physicochemical parameters like bulk density, water holding capacity, moisture content, pH, nitrates, phosphates and potassium were also estimated. It was observed that SI sample contained Ni (6.86 mg g-1), Zn (6.53 mg g-1), Co (5.05 mg g-1) and Cr (4.49 mg g-1), while SII contained Cu (32.86 mg g-1), Ni (9.66 mg g-1), Co (6.85 mg g-1) and Zn (5.41 mg g-1). In A/RAA assay, the percentage of cells with anaphase aberrations ranged from 3.63 to 10.67 and 0.38 to 4.83% for samples SI and SII, respectively. In Ames test, sample SII was found to be lethal to Salmonella tester strains at all concentrations used, while sample SI was found to be mutagenic in TA100 strains of Salmonella typhimurium. Sample SII was found to be strongly acidic with pH 3.46. The present study focuses on the increasing heavy metal pollution in Amritsar city due to industrial discharges over lands and also infers that both bioassays Ames and A/RAAA can serve as first alert indication of pollution. 相似文献

A study was performed to investigate the effects of complete and skeleton photoperiods on gonadal stimulation in baya weaver, Ploceus philippinus. In August 2003, five groups of acclimatized birds (n = 7 each) were exposed to 6L: 13D: 1L: 4D, 6L: 6D: 1L: 11D, 11L: 13D and 13L: 11D. Birds were refractory and their exposure to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D did not evoke any response. This clearly indicates that the birds were insensitive to the stimulatory effects of these photoperiods and perceived them as short days. An attempt was made to test the responsivity by subjecting all these groups to long day exposure after 16 weeks of experiment. Under 16L: 8D, birds did not show a response during the first 4 weeks of exposure (week 16 to week 20), but thereafter there was a significant photoinduction except 11L:13D (week 24), but the rate and magnitude was different. Until the end of the experiment (32 weeks), all groups of birds had maximum testicular volume except 11L:13D. Birds pre-exposed to 6L:13D:1L:4D, 6L:6D:1L:11D, 11L:13D and 13L:11D responded to 16L:8D, which suggests that these photoperiods helped the birds in recovering their photosensitivity. The results from this experiment indicate that baya weaver interprets a light period depending when the light falls relative to its endogenous circadian system. 相似文献
