Phytoextraction is the plant‐based removal of inorganic contaminants from the soil by root absorption and subsequent translocation to harvestable plant parts. The efficiency of this technique is limited by the phytoavailability of these contaminants in the soil and the root‐to‐shoot transport. To enhance the phytoextraction efficiency, the use of soil amendments has been widely investigated. Potential risks such as increased ecotoxicological effects and leaching of mobilized contaminants caution against the use of persistent mobilizing agents. The potential use of foliar amendments to enhance mineral absorption and/or translocation offers prospects for complementing or substituting soil amendments for enhanced phytoextraction purposes. This study presents an explorative screening to evaluate the feasibility of this approach. Helianthus annuus giganteus plants were grown in moderately contaminated dredged sediment for ten weeks, with daily foliar treatments from week six onward: (1) distilled water (control), (2) magnesium‐ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Mg‐EDTA), (3) diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), (4) nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), (5) citric acid, (6) oxalic acid, (7) calcium acetate, (8) ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN), and (9) cystein. Applied doses varied between treatments based on plant tolerance: 15 μmol per plant for cystein, 60 μmol per plant for DTPA and NH4SCN, 180 μmol per plant for Mg‐EDTA and NTA and 400 μmol per plant for the organic acids. We report the prenatal sonographic detection of a fetus with megalencephaly, polymicrogyria, postaxial polydactyly and hydrocephaly. Only 14 patients have been reported in the literature so far, all but one were diagnosed postnatally. The polymicrogyria in the frontoparietal lobe was confirmed by prenatal magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, a hypoplastic thymus as seen in a 22q11 deletion was present. Although polymicrogyria along with pre-axial polydactyly has been described in 22q11 deletion, the diagnosis of Di George syndrome was ruled out. The etiology of megalencephaly, polymicrogyria, postaxial polydactyly and hydrocephaly has not been revealed yet. Compound-specific chlorine-isotope analysis (CSIA-Cl) of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (p,p'-DDT) and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethene (p,p'-DDE) in blubber from Baltic Grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) was performed in order to investigate if a kinetic isotope effect (KIE) could be observed concomitant to environmental degradation of DDT. The delta(37)Cl of p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE were -0.69 +/- 0.21 per thousand and -2.98 +/- 0.57 per thousand (1s igma, n = 3), respectively. Both samples were enriched relative to the hypothesized initial isotope composition (-4.34 per thousand), thus indicating a composite KIE associated with the degradation mechanisms pertaining to DDT. An isotope fractionation factor for degradation of dichloromethane, from the literature, was adapted and modified for use in the calculation of DDT degradation. A subsequent simplified Rayleigh distillation model of the DDT chlorine-isotope composition yielded an estimated fraction (f) of 7 +/- 2% of released DDT presently remaining as undegraded compound in the environment. The consistency between the result of the Rayleigh model (f approximately 7%) and the use of the DDT/(DDT + DDE) ratio as a measure of DDT degradation ( approximately 10% undegraded DDT) suggests that the KIE of DDT degradation may be significant, and that the novel approach of CSIA-Cl may be a valuable tool for degradation/persistence studies of lipophilic organochlorines in the environment. 相似文献

Halogenated aliphatic compounds were evaluated for toxic and genotoxic effects in the somatic mutation and recombination test employing Drosophila melanogaster. The tested chemicals included chlorinated, brominated and iodinated; mono-, di- and tri-substituted; saturated and unsaturated alkanes: 1,2-dibromoethane, 1-bromo-2-chloroethane, 1-iodopropane, 2,3-dichloropropene, 3-bromo-1-propene, epibromohydrin, 2-iodobutane, 3-chloro-2-methylpropene, 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichlorobutane, 1-chloro-2-methylpropane, 1,3-dichloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 2-chloroethymethylether, 1-bromo-2-methylpropane and 1-chloropentane. N-methyl-N-nitrosourea served as the positive and distilled water as the negative control. The set of chemicals for the toxicological testing was selected by the use of statistical experiment design. Group of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons were generally more toxic than saturated analogues. The genotoxic effect was observed with 14 compounds in the wing spot test, while 3 substances did not show any genotoxicity by using the wing spot test at 50% lethal concentration. The highest number of wing spots was observed in genotoxicity assay with 1-bromo-2-chloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dibromoethane and 1-iodopropane. Nucleophilic superdelocalizability calculated by quantum mechanics appears to be a good parameter for prediction of both toxicity and genotoxicity effects of halogenated aliphatic compounds. 相似文献

A novel bioassay with the human adrenocortical carcinoma cell line H295R can be used to screen for endocrine disrupting chemicals that affect the expression of genes important in steroidogenesis. This assay was employed to study the effects of organic contaminants associated with the freshwater pond sediments collected in the Ostrava-Karvina region, Czech Republic. The modulation of ten major genes involved in the synthesis of steroid hormones (CYP11A, CYP11B2, CYP17, CYP19, 17betaHSD1, 17betaHSD4, CYP21, 3betaHSD2, HMGR, StAR) after exposure of H295R cells to sediment extracts was investigated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Crude sediment extracts, containing high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and moderate amounts of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) significantly stimulated expression of the CYP11B2 gene (up to 10-fold induction), and suppressed expression of 3betaHSD2 and CYP21 genes. A similar pattern was observed with the extracts after treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid to remove labile chemicals (including PAHs) leaving only persistent PCBs, OCPs and potentially PCDD/Fs. Comparison of the results with other mechanistically based bioassays (arylhydrocarbon receptor, AhR, mediated responses in H4IIE-luc cells, and estrogen receptor mediated effects in MVLN cells) revealed significant endocrine disrupting potencies of organic contaminants present in the sediments (most likely antiestrogenicity). Pronounced effects were observed particularly in sediment extracts from the Pilnok Pond which harbors an unusual intersexual population of the narrow-cawed crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus (Decapoda, Crustacea). This pilot study provided the first experimental evidence of the wider application of the H295R bioassay for screening complex environmental samples, and the results support the hypothesis of chemical-induced endocrine disruption in intersexual crayfish. 相似文献

The purpose of the research was to establish whether humic acid-like substances (HA) related to municipal refuse disposed of in a landfill can resist microbial degradation and if they contribute, in that way, to long-term stabilization of landfill refuse. Using a mixture of 0.1 M Na(4)P(2)O(7) + 0.1 M NaOH, we extracted HA from municipal refuse mixed with sewage sludge and disposed of for up to 12 months, in a 40-m(3) model landfill. In laboratory experiments under aerobic conditions, up to 50% of HA was utilized as a supplementary source of nutrients by an assemblage of soil microorganisms in only 21 days. The microbial utilization was enhanced to over 80%, and up to 98%, respectively, if HA served as the sole source of carbon or nitrogen. Remaining HA which could be re-isolated from microbial cultures were lower in carbon (<12%) and nitrogen (<2.3%). Spectroscopic analysis (UV, Vis, FTIR) indicated losses, especially in aliphatic structural units, and a relative enhancement in aromatic structures. It was postulated that for their high degree of degradability, HA indigenous to that anthropogenic environment would not play an important role in the long-term stabilization of landfill refuse. 相似文献
