The role of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) as a bioindicator for the accumulation of organohalogen compounds and other persistent organic pollutants has been established in field studies. Biometric indices for damage caused by pollutants such as the shell thickness and the shell index were determined and the egg contents were analyzed for various pollutants by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A wide range of chemically activated luciferase expression (CALUX®) bioassays were performed on subsamples of the eggs.
The following organohalogen compounds were found in the eggs of 2009: dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane, heptachlor epoxide, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin, hexachlorocyclohexane, polychlorobiphenyls and polychlorodibenzodioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans, polybromodiphenyl ethers, hexabromocyclododecane, tetrabromobisphenyl A, perfluoro compounds, and mercury. The DDT metabolite, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethene (DDE) (11,800 ng/g dry matter), was found to be the most highly concentrated egg contaminant followed by 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (3800 ng/g). After a past general drop in pollution level, most egg contaminants presently plateau at levels that may still exceed limit values in foods of animal origin (DDE) or even toxicological thresholds (polychlorobiphenyls + polychlorodibenzodioxins, polybromodiphenyl ethers, perfluorooctanesulfonate, methylmercury).
Accumulation of DDE could be shown in peregrine falcon eggs from the uplands of Southwest Germany with elevations up to 1500 m, presumably due to its global distribution and its cold condensation in higher altitudes. In contrast, the concentration of polychlorobiphenyls in falcon eggs decreases with elevation, indicating that these pollutants originate mainly from conurbations and local industrial sites.
Significant negative correlations were found between both shell index and thickness and the concentration of Hg. A deleterious effect is also evident from a no-observed-adverse-effect level of 120 ng MeHg per gram egg determined by other authors in chronic feeding studies with ibises, which resulted in decreased egg productivity and male homosexual nesting and courtship behavior. The average Hg concentration in the peregrine falcon eggs from 2009 is almost four times higher than this level. MeHg accounted for 82.5% of the Hg present in the eggs of 2009 and 2010.
The cell test DR CALUX® for screening of dioxin-like activities can be used to detect not only the 29 regulated dioxin-like substances but also many other persistent organic pollutants with dioxin-like potencies, such as mixed halogenated dioxins/biphenyls. In our case, the results of bioanalytical screening methods showed no additional effect of other compounds with dioxin-like activity.
Ninety-three out of 177 analytes sought could be detected in the eggs. Chlorinated paraffins, organotin compounds, some pesticides that are still in use, and phthalic esters with the exception of traces of diethylhexyl phthalate could be excluded. All pollutants found in the eggs belong to substance classes banned by the Stockholm and Minamata Conventions. 相似文献
It has been postulated that spatial organization of the colony, in addition to biological and social factors, influences colony life in honeybees. In this study, we examine the influence of workers’ distance from the queen on their reproductive, pheromonal and behavioural characteristics. Our results demonstrate that with increasing distance from the queen, workers increasingly develop behavioural and reproductive traits characteristic of queenlessness, which are presumably the result of significant impairment in queen pheromone transmission. Having contemplated the alternative possibilities of inadequate transmission of queen signal and voluntary escape from queen control, we concluded, based on the behavioural and physiological data, that the former is far more probable than the latter. The dose-dependent manner of the queen pheromone action and its differential influence on various worker characteristics are discussed. 相似文献
In the social bee, Bombus terrestris, the two castes differ in size and physiology, but not in any other morphological and anatomical aspects. The size differences between the castes are the result of longer instar duration in prospective queen larvae. It appears that queen larvae are programmed to have a higher molting weight at the end of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th instars. Calculation of the growth ratio, the ratio between the logarithm of molting weight at two successive instars, revealed that queen larvae have a linear growth ratio over the entire larval development as predicted by Dyar's rule. In the worker larvae, in contrast, linearity of the growth ratio breaks after the second instar, resulting in larval molting at lower weights than expected by Dyar's rule. We therefore suggest that workers' development is abnormally shortened, either by parental manipulation or by adopting a different growth plan in response to the queen's signal. 相似文献
Fifteen beaches from the Swansea Bay coastal sediment cell, South Wales, UK, were analysed via function analysis, involving
assessment of specific environmental and socio-economic indicators. These were allocated scores from field surveys and extensive
desktop studies, which included beach awards, relevant shoreline management plans, planning and conservation designations
and current legislation. Normalised scores allowed production of a conservation/development matrix, enabling beach location
in conservation, development or conflict fields, which results appropriately identified. Conservation field beaches tended
to have a low density residential hinterland with little or no commercialisation. Conversely, beaches that leant towards the
development field had a high density residential hinterland and were highly commercialised. Evaluation showed the importance
of planning legislation in conflict areas and identified locations of development potential, where significant environmental
consequences would be unlikely. This representation could be used for evolution of conservation/development status within
coastal areas, enabling policy adjustment as necessary. It will also enable future sustainability assessment and it is suggested
that indicators could be modified to reduce environmental emphasis and provide a more uniform socio-economic consideration. 相似文献
Summary. Worker policing in honeybees predicts the
evolution of a mechanism to discriminate between queenand
worker-born eggs. Although it has been postulated that
this discrimination is based on an egg recognition
pheromone, neither the chemistry nor the glandular source
were elucidated. To verify whether egg discrimination might
be based on structural differences, we compared the ultrastructure
surface of queen-laid diploid and haploid eggs to
that of worker-laid eggs using SEM. Only small differences
between the different types of eggs were found. Thus, at
least based on the fine structure of the egg surface, queen
eggs are indistinguishable from worker-laid eggs.To explore the chemosensory hypothesis for egg discrimination,
we conducted a detailed comparative chemical
analysis of the different egg types. The coating of all egg
types was dominated by linear alkanes, but queen eggs,
diploid and haploid, differed from those of workers on two
accounts: 1. The diversity of compounds found on queenlaid
eggs was much greater than found on worker-laid eggs,
mainly due to the number of hydrocarbons. 2. Acetates of
some fatty alcohols, alkenes and especially monomethylalkanes
were characteristic to queen eggs. The origin of the
two latter substances and the acetates is still unknown.
Whether these compounds constitute the signal that enables
police workers to discriminate between queen- and workerborn
eggs remains to be investigated. 相似文献
The model of Dewanji and Kalbfleisch for the estimation of time to tumour onset from a serial-sacrifice experiment is extended to include a marker state prior to the onset of the tumour. There are two versions of the model, one where a tumour is allowed to develop without the onset of marker, the other where a tumour develops after the marker but in which the marker later becomes unobservable. 相似文献
Before using macroinvertebrates in water quality assessment in the Chusovaya River (Russia, the Urals, 50°55N, 60° E), preliminary results of three sampling methods were compared: handnet, circular shovel and a standardized artificial substrate sampler. The artificial substrate consisted of glass marbles ( 20 mm). To compare the efficiency of these sampling methods the total numbers of taxa found at each location per sampling data were considered to be 100%. The highest efficiency was reached with the artificial substrate sampler. 75–100% of the taxa at the different locations were collected with this sampler. Only 5–19% and 10–20% of the taxa at each location per sampling date were collected with the circular shovel in the sand and gravel substrate respectively, being the lowest efficiency. Intermediate results were obtained with the hand net. 23–38% of the taxa were collected with this net. Based on these results and requirements placed upon sampling methods in general, the standardized artificial substrate sampler has been considered to be an optimal sampling device for macroinvertebrates in biological monitoring. 相似文献
The mechanisms of regulating worker reproduction in bumblebees were studied by direct behavioral observations and by measuring
ovarian development and juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis rates in workers under different social conditions. Workers in
the last stage of Bombus terrestris colony development (the competition phase) had the lowest ovarian development and JH biosynthesis rates. Callows introduced
into colonies immediately after queen removal (dequeened colonies) demonstrated a significant increase in ovarian development
before, but not during, the competition phase. These findings differ from the higher ovarian development in colonies during
the competition phase predicted by the prevailing hypothesis that worker reproduction starts in response to a decrease in
queen inhibition. Reproduction of callows housed with dominant workers in small queenless groups was inhibited as in queenright
colonies. This suggests that the reduced ovarian development and JH biosynthesis rates observed in dequeened and normally
developing colonies during the competition phase also reflect inhibition by dominant workers. Thus, two distinct stages of
inhibition of reproduction seem to exist: (1) before the competition phase, when the queen slows down worker ovarian development
and prevents oviposition; (2) during the competition phase, when dominant workers inhibit ovarian development of other workers.
Between these stages there seems to be a temporal “window” of enhanced worker reproductive development. The queen's typical
switch to haploid egg production was not associated with changes in worker ovarian development or JH biosynthesis rates. These
findings suggest that regulation of worker reproduction in B. terrestris is not determined by simple changes in the queen's inhibition capacity or by the sex of offspring and that the worker's role
is more important than previously believed.
