In this study a large dataset on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content of Swiss soils was analysed to evaluate two source apportionment tools, i.e., characteristic PAH ratios/molecular markers and a linear mixing model. Population density and total organic carbon (TOC) content were identified by a multiple regression model as independently and positively influencing the PAH concentrations in Swiss background soil. Specifically, TOC was more strongly positively correlated with the sum of light PAH (naphthalene to phenanthrene) than with the sum of heavy PAH (anthracene to benzo[ghj]perylene), whereas population density was more strongly positively correlated with the sum of heavy PAH than with light PAH. In addition, the sum of the heavy PAH as well as the total sum correlated negatively with sample site altitude. It is therefore hypothesised that heavy PAH are less mobile, whereas light PAH were closer to equilibrium with TOC in the soil. Similar results were found for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). The characteristic ratios and molecular markers pointed to pyrogenic origin of PAH in Swiss background soil but did not allow for further differentiation of individual fuel contributions, even though attempts to take environmental fractionation processes into account were made. The comparison of three soil profiles identified with a linear mixing model from the pattern of 16 PAH with >300 PAH emission profiles from the literature suggested urban dust, wood combustion and binders from asphalt as PAH sources. However, also here, environmental fractionation processes probably obscured source characteristic PAH ratios and fingerprints, which thus need to be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) was evaluated in a laboratory treatability study and subsequently injected as an interim measure to treat source area groundwater impacts beneath a former dry cleaner located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (the site). Dry cleaning operations resulted in releases of tetrachloroethene (PCE) that impacted site soil at concentrations up to 2,700 mg/kg and shallow groundwater at concentrations up to 41 mg/L. To achieve a design loading rate of 0.001 kg of iron per kilogram of aquifer material, approximately 725 kg of NanoFe? (PARS Environmental) was injected over a two‐week period into a saprolite and partially weather rock aquifer. Strong reducing conditions were established with oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) values below –728 mV. pH levels remained greater than 8 standard units for a period of 12 months. Injections resulted in near elimination of PCE within one month. cis‐1,2‐Dichloroethene accumulated at high concentrations (greater than 65 mg/L) for 12 months. MAROS software (Version 2.2; AFCEE, 2006 ) was used to calculate mass reduction of PCE and total ethenes at 96 percent and 58 percent, respectively, compared to baseline conditions. Detections of acetylene confirmed the presence of the beta‐elimination pathway. Detections of ethene confirmed complete dechlorination of PCE. We investigated the effects of two river restoration projects on hydromorphology and macroinvertebrate fauna in two German lowland rivers, the Schwalm and the Gartroper Mühlenbach. The stream channels were re-meandered and the floodplain levels were lowered to better connect the streams to their floodplains. The restoration was performed 10 years ago in the Schwalm and 2 years ago in the Gartroper Mühlenbach. We compared the restored reaches to nearby anthropogenically straightened reaches. Twenty-five hydromorphological parameters were recorded on twenty transects; between nine and 23 substrate-specific macroinvertebrate samples were taken per reach. Several hydromorphological parameters, such as the number and width of channel features and the number of substrate types, were significantly higher in the restored reaches compared to nearby anthropogenically straightened reaches. Total numbers of invertebrate families, genera, and taxa were also higher in the restored reaches than in the anthropogenically straightened reaches. Biotic substrates like dead wood or macrophytes were more abundant in the restored reaches, and these substrates hosted 28 taxa not found in the straightened reaches. While diversity was high in both restored reaches, overall abundance increased only in the river that was restored 10 years ago. Using NMS-analysis, substrate-specific faunistic samples of the restored reaches were compared to those of the straightened reaches. Our results revealed different invertebrate communities on the same substrates in the recently restored river. In the 10-year-old restoration, however, the same substrates were similarly inhabited. This comparable colonization of substrates may reflect succession in the macroinvertebrate community. The results are discussed according to the re-colonization potentials of the upstream and downstream reaches and the dispersal capacity of taxa.  相似文献

Numerous scientific publications have stirred a political debate about the impact of synthetic chemicals on the endocrine system of humans and animals. In an parliamentary inquiry, the Federal Government of Germany was requested to give its opinion on currently available information, to describe the measures taken so far and to outline the challenges for the future. The government’s reply — an abridged, translated version is published here — reviews crucial aspects of the present scientific debate. The main focus is on the critical examination of the request for immediate legal action (e.g. restricting the production or use of certain substances) to reduce exposure to endocrine disruptors. Furthermore, an overview is given on national and international measures taken so far to refine the assessment of the potential hazards emanating from these chemicals, to gain more insight into the underlying biological mechanisms and to improve the basis for targeted and adequate legal action.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory suggests that divergent natural selection in heterogeneous environments can result in locally adapted plant genotypes. To understand local adaptation it is important to study the ecological factors responsible for divergent selection. At a continental scale, variation in climate can be important while at a local scale soil properties could also play a role. We designed an experiment aimed to disentangle the role of climate and (abiotic and biotic) soil properties in local adaptation of two common plant species. A grass (Holcus lanatus) and a legume (Lotus corniculatus), as well as their local soils, were reciprocally transplanted between three sites across an Atlantic-Continental gradient in Europe and grown in common gardens in either their home soil or foreign soils. Growth and reproductive traits were measured over two growing seasons. In both species, we found significant environmental and genetic effects on most of the growth and reproductive traits and a significant interaction between the two environmental effects of soil and climate. The grass species showed significant home site advantage in most of the fitness components, which indicated adaptation to climate. We found no indication that the grass was adapted to local soil conditions. The legume showed a significant home soil advantage for number of fruits only and thus a weak indication of adaptation to soil and no adaptation to climate. Our results show that the importance of climate and soil factors as drivers of local adaptation is species-dependent. This could be related to differences in interactions between plant species and soil biota.  相似文献

Overall, the deregulation of genetically engineered (GE) crops for commercial cultivation in North America has been a success story. In several cases, however, GE crops have sparked concerns and disagreements among the stakeholders and there are incidences of court lawsuits, including a recent one on glyphosate resistant (GR) alfalfa (Medicago sativa, L.). While GE crops can provide operational benefits to farmers, challenges are looming from commercialization of perennial GE crops. The unique ecology and biology of these crops and GE alfalfa in particular can facilitate adventitious presence (AP) of GE traits and it makes more visible that economic risks for conventional growers and food/feed producers have not been adequately addressed by the GE regulatory system in the United States (US). Asynchronous market approvals and the existence of a number of GE sensitive export markets create uncertainties among the exporters. Policy development in these fields may be helpful for ensuring a broader acceptance and market success of GE agriculture in general. The analysis is focusing on the US, although many diagnosed problems are also relevant to other jurisdictions—in particular if no co-existence policy is in place.  相似文献
